Has bad branding ever turned you off from software, FOSS or not?

I'll start: while looking at app theming I came across WallRizz, renamed from WallWiz. I haven't tried it, and looking at it documentation it seems well made, but I cringe at the name and the AI-generated penguin logo. It shares the art style of all the other AI slop, its basically italian brainrot but 2D. WallWiz sounds way better, rizz sounds like it was specially designed for gen alpha (little kids). If there are apps of even similar quality, why would I use this one?
p0358@reddit
There was some desktop firewall whose name I can’t remember. Had to ditch it due to its abhorrent unreadable dark mode UI, and they didn’t care whatsoever for light mode or improving it; and I wasn’t alone in that. Not sure if it counts
Shap6@reddit
it can be hard to recommend GIMP to people without also immediately explaining that it's an acronym
NeatTransition5@reddit
Indeed. What an unfortunate name for an, otherwise, great product.
Pedka2@reddit
honestly, i've never had this issue. it's just a word.
Shap6@reddit
It’s a word that means a very different thing in the context most people would be familiar with
Pedka2@reddit
it may be a hot take, but it sounds nice phonetically. there are many languages besides english. it's a made up word with a made up meaning, like all words.
tripanossoma_cruzes@reddit
post modernism is ruining all the kids these days
Sp33d0J03@reddit
Are you 14?
pervertsage@reddit
That's a weird hill to die on. I salute your bravery but it'd be exhausting having to explain yourself all the time.
Shap6@reddit
right, but those words mean things. obviously all language is made up but that doesnt really mean you should just name things whatever just because
Pedka2@reddit
told ya it's a hot take. i'm being philosophical here. it's just limiting yourself by arbitrary rules.
edparadox@reddit
"most" LMAO.
Textbook r/usdefaultism.
Scoutron@reddit
Buddy you’re on an American website, what exactly do you expect
Shap6@reddit
why do you think thats US defaultism?
Newmillstream@reddit
In a professional context, the few times I have had to bring it up, I just say "GNU Image Manipulation Program" if I don’t know the person is already familiar. It minimizes misunderstandings that way.
eras@reddit
Can you not think of any word that would be bad for a project, just for the reason that it's a word?
Pedka2@reddit
docs would be a bad name for a spreadsheet app, because it would be misleading. but if the word is far semantically, then yeah i can't.
LvS@reddit
How about "Exterminate the Blacks" for an app that sets the light theme on all apps you have installed?
"Gas chamber" for an app that does performance tuning?
"Lynch n*ggers" for an extension that gets rid of cookie banners?
"Child reapist" for a tool that gets rid of zombie processes?
It's very easy to come up with dogwhistles that fit well enough semantically, so I could go on like this for a while.
Far-9947@reddit
Funny enough, I found out about the meaning of the word Gimp through Gimp haters. It's like they hyperfocus on anything bad they can find about it to use in an argument.
I have never heard a person say the word GIMP in real life. And I don't think most people even know about the bondage suit meaning. Crazy enough, the first time I heard the word used in mainstream media was in season 4 of the TV show "The Boys".
Pedka2@reddit
i thought that was the only meaning of this word before the GIMP haters taught me the other one. they are so far apart that adding a third one for the software makes no difference.
Far-9947@reddit
A third one?
Pedka2@reddit
supposedly gimp means a disabled person (slur) and the bdsm thing. so third would be GIMP the program
Far-9947@reddit
Oh okay. I was confused for a second. I was aware of that definition, but didn't know if that's what you were referring to.
gpsxsirus@reddit
I had this exact experience at work one time when I was explaining to a coworker that Adobe products weren't available for my OS and that I wasn't familiar with GIMP. (I'm a web dev and a designer threw a "can't you do it" at me when I needed some images adjusted so my project could go live that night.)
mrtruthiness@reddit
... and yet, predictably, forks like "glimpse" which start out as rebranding forks never last more than a year before they fail ...
SweetBabyAlaska@reddit
There's the trust aspect and the constant amount of work to stay updated and it's barely ever worth it. You suck it up and own your program named scrotum
I_AM_GODDAMN_BATMAN@reddit
I'm not from an English speaking country, so I didn't know what a gimp is for a long time. I only knew GIMP as a software. After I knew what it is, I already didn't care of the name.
duva_@reddit
I don't know how many years passed after I started using git before I watched a Monty Python sketch with Graham Chapman calling someone "stupid git"
DavidBittner@reddit
FTFY lol
Anaptyso@reddit
I'm surprised not to see Pop!_OS mentioned here. It's a really nice OS (although in a bit of a limbo at the moment), but that name is just awful.
KHTD2004@reddit
Yeah as specially in German, where „popos“ means „asses“
TWB0109@reddit
Popos can mean "poops" in Spanish lol.
I call it popos.
duva_@reddit
In Spanish I personally think of Mr Popo (equally funny in German, which happens to be my third language)
Mars_Bear2552@reddit
u/bluecat101
duva_@reddit
????
Mars_Bear2552@reddit
the one they call "popo"
duva_@reddit
It's like webOS in Spanish, which is akin to saying "bollocks"
henfiber@reddit
popos also means "ass" in Greek (singular)
johnnyfireyfox@reddit
Branding doesn't make me not to use software but name can make searching difficult. Like Matrix or Element, some common name.
Anaptyso@reddit
Reminds me of the British rock band The The.
borkyborkus@reddit
Reminds me of the people that took the time to write the exclamation point in P!ATD.
thomas_m_k@reddit
I avoided it for a long time just because of the name. I completely agree with everything you said.
McDonaldsWitchcraft@reddit
Is it? What makes it awful? It's simple and recognizable.
Anaptyso@reddit
The exclamation mark and underscore in the middle of the name seems a bit odd to me. A bit like it's the name of a children's TV programme rather than an OS.
I don't want to criticise it too much though, because I've used it and thought it was really good.
mystirc@reddit
It just has a playful tone signifying that it is for beginners.
psyblade42@reddit
Depends on wether you you count Hyprland's "made my Nazis" vibe branding.
TheTwelveYearOld@reddit (OP)
I know Hyprland had lots of drama, but you need to explain.
psyblade42@reddit
E.g. https://jakelazaroff.com/words/dhh-is-way-worse-than-i-thought/
deadlygaming11@reddit
Sometimes, yeah. SteamOS, basically just a Valve twist on Arch, is a "gaming" distro. There's no such thing as a gaming distro. An OS is an OS.
mkwlink@reddit
I think you're confusing CachyOS and SteamOS.
deadlygaming11@reddit
No. Im talking about SteamOS. The branding for it is always very much centred about being gaming focused.
Thats from the Steam Machine page
ImaginedUtopia@reddit
Valve doesn't really advertise SteamOS as gaming distro tho and all the advertising of SteamOS I've seen was more aimed at people that don't use Linux so Valve repeatedly saying that "it does run games just like Windows would!!!" makes sense and is a valuable piece of information to get across
deadlygaming11@reddit
Thats directly from the Steam Machine page
Temaktor@reddit
Not sure if thats included in your definition of branding but if a projects Website is awful or extremely old its a red flag for me...
I fully Understand that Webdesign and Desktop or Mobile Application Development are very different and a website is rarely a high priority so I don't expect anything advanced or beautiful... I'm perfectly fine if its obviously created with a website hosters click your site together Tool or whatever, what turns me off are Sites that are difficult to navigate or look like they haven't been maintained / updated for very long, just makes me question how active the project still is or how sane the community is xD
fliperama_@reddit
The whole anime stuff surrounding some projects
Cswizzy@reddit
This! I automatically tone out anything with this. Might make me a bad person but it's so cringe.
TheTwelveYearOld@reddit (OP)
Can you name examples?
windsostrange@reddit
Krita is the first one that pops into my mind.
Amazing product. Completely unnecessary mascot/splash screen. It will limit the popularity of this product forever outside of bedrooms, so I actually hope it's a ploy to get business users to pay/upgrade.
fliperama_@reddit
Yes, Hyprland (did you forget to switch accounts? Lol) and the "checking if you're not a bot" thing
TheTwelveYearOld@reddit (OP)
That software is Anubis, meant to stop AI crawlers: https://github.com/TecharoHQ/anubis
Why are anime catgirls blocking my access to the Linux kernel?: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44962529
watermelonspanker@reddit
But that's still applicable, right?
If OP doesn't want anime cat girls on his system, the fact that it's in some application or module and not directly in the kernel isn't really germane, is it?
kombiwombi@reddit
Sometimes that's a tactic to make corporate users pay.
TheTwelveYearOld@reddit (OP)
Its dumb that you have to add a setting to Hyprland to turn off the anime girl wallpapers. Highly opinionated and socially awkward in many places including the US.
CameramanNick@reddit
Gimp?
Git?
Even something like GNU. Oh, it's a recursive acronym, that's clever, despite the fact that GNU to all practical purposes absolutely is Unix, and Wine absolutely is an emulator.
None of this is helping.
duva_@reddit
Mmm no, GNU is a reimplementation of a bunch of utilities and wine is a compatibility layer, i.e. an implementation of the Windows APIs
CameramanNick@reddit
Yes, I know, but the point is that all the nitpicking and general smartassery over that kind of stuff makes Linux look inaccessible and elitist. That doesn't help.
duva_@reddit
I mean I kinda agree with that overall sentiment, however it might seem like you are saying that being able to differentiate between concepts is elitist.
CameramanNick@reddit
Well, no, but making it part of the title of the program in order to demonstrate... something... is a bit..
...you know?
Call it something meaningful that doesn't actively seek to trick the reader.
duva_@reddit
Sorry, no, I don't see it. No one is being tricked. I think you chose a bad example for your pet peeve.
GNU and in particular Stallman are elitist and purist af, but I don't see that in a somewhat facetious name, tbh.
2rad0@reddit
FOr real, the IR in gcc is clled 'gimple'
-thelastbyte@reddit
Fedora. I can't go around telling people who don't know what Linux is that I love computers so much that I became a Fedora person.
There are implications.
WillD2007@reddit
I think the solution to this particular problem is to remember that normal people don't go around talking about there current OS choice, and that's why they think it's weird rather then the unfortunate image that a fedora brings up...
I use Fedora btw.
docentmark@reddit
Can you please explain what unfortunate image? Or what behaviour is the wearing of a hat associated with?
mrtruthiness@reddit
https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Fedora
watermelonspanker@reddit
Are you telling me that Harrison Ford should not be wearing a Fedora?
mrtruthiness@reddit
I'm just answering the guy's question with a link to urbandictionary.
But ...:
Harrison Ford doesn't wear a Fedora. Some of the characters he plays do wear a Fedora. And, of course, Indiana Jones was set in the 40's ... when people wore Fedoras (e.g. like Humphrey Bogart's character (Rick Blaine) in Casablanca).
It's interesting to note that in the late 1800's virtually every man in the US wore hats outside. Even by the early 1940's around 90% of men wore hats outside. This was the era of Indiana Jones and Casablanca. This dropped dramatically in the 1960's. More people driving cars, fewer people walking ... fewer hats.
docentmark@reddit
Oh, it’s some UD shit that Redditors are gullible enough to believe.
WillD2007@reddit

kombiwombi@reddit
The Red Hat branding has had a hard time of it ever since a politician adopted red hats as their brand.
StochasticCalc@reddit
It certainly makes things hard to find when software packages and libraries have random names unrelated to their functionality. Shit like:
"You should try the glorpr crate! It's a rust implementation of the gloopy library from python! They're blazingly fast methods to extract info from Office 2007 documents."
freedomlinux@reddit
I'm a bit lenient towards strange names because they can make it easier to get good search results.
On the opposite end, "It's a rust implementation of the gloopy library from python! They're blazingly fast methods to extract info from Office 2007 documents, we call it ... Office Document Import"
Zzyzx2021@reddit
Some people actually like those random names. For instance, "guacamole" (Apache toolkit)
Pugs-r-cool@reddit
My profile picture is the logo for Sudo, anyone complaining about bad branding turning them off of a project better not use it.
thephotoman@reddit
Sometimes. But The GIMP has an awful name, and I still use it anyway.
In American English, “gimp” is a rude way to refer to a disabled person. The fact that the project is American-based and created by the Free Software Foundation is clearly indicative of major cultural problems at the FSF—ones likely induced by Richard Stallman’s own bizarre social views.
And yet, there are still people who insist that this complaint is done in bad faith. But when I have this scene play out (content warning: it’s the rape scene from Pulp Fiction, starting around “Bring out the Gimp”) as my first association with the word “gimp” and get called a bad actor for suggesting that this is a bad thing, it tells me that the free software movement is incapable of professionalism. It tells me that the FSF is still in the hands of deeply immature people who think that being rude is funny.
The only good news is that the FSF can’t function without Richard Stallman, so they’ll soon stop functioning as perhaps the worst advocates for their own ideas.
CMYK-Student@reddit
Not to take away from your main point, but I don't think GIMP was created by the Free Software Foundation - and while people have contributed to both, it's definitely not maintained by the foundation now. The current maintainers and many active developers of GIMP are European in fact. So the name issue isn't the FSF's fault. :) I wasn't able to make it to this year's developer Wilber Week, but I understand there was an in-depth discussion about the name.
docentmark@reddit
The G always stood for GNU, so it had to with the approval of the eponymous project.
CMYK-Student@reddit
Not always - it was originally "General", so "General Image Manipulation Program". I think they got permission to change it to "GNU" later on.
teh_maxh@reddit
They should really just call it GNU IMP now.
SweetBabyAlaska@reddit
And make the mascot a cute imp
LvS@reddit
GIMP's file format is
.xcfwhich is short for EXperimental Computing Facility, the place where it was invented. Here's an archive page from 1997 where creating it is advertised for CS199 credit.
NightZT@reddit
I'm not a native so I didn't know about that. What are the bizarre social views of Richard Stallman?
thephotoman@reddit
He’s had multiple occasions where he’s defended child predators. He says he’s changed, but also don’t ask him about Marvin Minsky (who was a pedo).
mrtruthiness@reddit
Going to Epstein's Island doesn't necessarily make one a pedo. Other than that, what evidence do you have the Minsky was a pedo?
fellipec@reddit
The roadkill cat from Irfanview
modified_tiger@reddit
I support enterprise clients who use it. It's hilarious to see that cat.
antii79@reddit
Everything beginning with "K" in KDE makes me kringe.
PercussionGuy33@reddit
This is the number one reason I avoid that DE.
duva_@reddit
The stupidest, but to each their own, I guess
Chaotic-Entropy@reddit
As a user of Fedora Kool Desktop Environment... I can't really afford to judge.
duva_@reddit
Now it's K desktop environment lol
TheTwelveYearOld@reddit (OP)
Nah its always just KDE, no one ever says the whole name.
alexmex90@reddit
KDE is the name of the organization, the UI they develop is nowadays officially named Plasma.
TheTwelveYearOld@reddit (OP)
KDE still refers to the DE itself a lot of the time.
dkech@reddit
Oh, Jesus, I had to look that up. I never knew that it was thought as "Kool" at the very beginning! But it seems quite quickly cringe-averse people made it simply K Desktop Environment (before that was also dropped in favour of just KDE over a decade ago...).
asking4afriend40631@reddit
WhatsApp. I hate, hate, hate that stupid name and for that reason alone refuse to use it (ugh, except where absolutely required for some family, and even then i feel gross). It's such an awful name, i hate puns and things like puns, and I hate stupid jokes, and this is all that. (Not claiming any superiority here, just irrational personnel preferences. )
mystirc@reddit
Same here, but since WhatsApp is so popular I no longer think that it is weird. When I was still a kid, I used to think what the hell kinda name is WhatsApp, its just stupid lol.
artistino@reddit
because of its popularity, in dutch it's not uncommon to hear someone say they "will app you" or "send you an app" when they obviously mean message and i don't need that kind of irritation in my life.
FlashOfAction@reddit
Tbh most Foss projects have bad branding. I don't care about it too much. What matters is if it does what it needs to do
Wide_Yoghurt_4064@reddit
Yes. If your UI or branding is ugly it puts me off.
Example is Immich’s old logo/font choice.
No reason for it to bother me and I acknowledge that. Marketing has beaten me.
froop@reddit
Ubuntu's default color scheme/wallpaper/layout are just awful. It's been awful for like 20 years now. I'm convinced half the appeal of Mint is not having to personalize it out of the box, and Plasma is just fantastic.
SmartCustard9944@reddit
In my opinion orange and purple look amazing together. I really enjoy Ubuntu's UI.
benhaube@reddit
Right!? Who ever thought that orange is a great color for your UI? lol Even worse is having that dash on the left side of the screen.
In general, I can't stand the GNOME desktop environment. I use Fedora, and while I think their "Vanilla" GNOME implementation is a LOT better than the Ubuntu implementation, I still prefer the KDE Plasma Edition. I wouldn't use Kubuntu because there are many other reasons not to use Ubuntu beside their GNOME implementation.
vazark@reddit
Exactly UI is a feature. So many devs live in TUI land and completely ignore it
OrganicNectarine@reddit
Thankfully even TUI apps are becoming pretty fancy these days too
TWB0109@reddit
Yeah, stuff like Impala, Bluetui and clipse are pretty cool.
kalzEOS@reddit
Yeah, I'll never fucking touch this program. Even my 12 year old hates these new "words", he complains about them all the time. Lmao.
Xatraxalian@reddit
Yes. I would never use Ubuntu or Pop!_OS (wtf) because I find the names to be stupid.
GNOME's left foot logo that looks like a scared spermatozoid also puts me off. (You know the "oh, sh..... something is wrong" droplets around a characters head in a comic, I assume. That's what GNOME's logo makes me think of.)
I HATE names such as "The GIMP". That's just idiotic. Unfortunately there's no alternative.
kudlitan@reddit
I also hate the mouse in XFCE
Dialectic-Compiler@reddit
No matter how hard I try, I just can't stand EndeavourOS or Gentoo's logo's.
Zzyzx2021@reddit
You don't like Gentoo's current logo? Would you have preffered Larry The Cow?
Dialectic-Compiler@reddit
It just doesn't grab me. I think I'd have went with a stylized gentoo penguin borrowing from the aesthetics of futurism (the artistic movement) to convey a sense of motion, fitting with the gentoo being chosen for its fast swimming speed as a nod to Gentoo's utility in constructing an optimized system.
TheWholeSandwich@reddit
Yes. Branding is important for real. It says something about the software and its creators that normally might take a while to figure out. Do they care about details? Did they think ahead or did they just slap this together?
And while we're on the subject, I also think you CAN judge a book by its cover. That's literally what the cover is for. To help you judge the book. If they did a poor job of it, why would I think they did a good job on the rest of the book?
daemonpenguin@reddit
I don't think a project's name or logo has been a deciding factor for me. It's not like I need to say the name or look at the logo, ever really.
However, I have noticed that projects which are poorly named often suffer from poor user interfaces or designs. I suspect it's because people who are disconnected from what other people will find attractive in a name also are not good at predicting another person's workflow. (They lack "theory of mind", if I remember the term correctly.)
So a badly named project is often a warning sign for me that the user experience is going to suffer.
mrtruthiness@reddit
Like how xdg-app (with no logo) was the name before it was changed to flatpak (with a box-like logo)?
daemonpenguin@reddit
Right, Flatpak has terrible syntax and poor user experience until it has a graphical front end and even then it needs some add-ons to be decent.
Or git. Cool concept, terrible command line syntax.
qui3t_n3rd@reddit
The GNU Image Manipulation Program has had that issue since time immemorial
linuxjohn1982@reddit
I used NESticle, and was a huge fan of it... so no.
HappyAngrySquid@reddit
I think I understand the gist of your question, and if so, my answer is slightly off topic, but the brand of Oracle is an instant “no” from me.
FireflyThePony@reddit
sudo's logo looks terrible
FryBoyter@reddit
No, because I realize that it's difficult to find a good project name.
What would be important to me as a user is that it should be relatively easy to perform searches using a search engine.
Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Take Matrix, for example. That's why I prefer a bad, unique project name.
ang-p@reddit
The word "Rizz" was enough... no need to even consider the penguin; I'm gone.
needtoknowbasisonly@reddit
GIMP, Pidgin, and the whole Gnu (Guh-Nu) schtick... their names and icons are a huge turn off. I also can't stand the VLC traffic cone.
But, I appreciate the huge effort that goes into FOSS development, and even more the projects that do a great job with their branding and aesthetics. Massive respect to them.
MadamPardone@reddit
I've been using Fedora distro lately and I absolutely cannot stand the name. Just the idea of saying "yea, I'm on Fedora 43" makes me uncomfortable.
Dont_tase_me_bruh694@reddit
90% of foss programs have dumb names imo. The icon being and accurate succinct representation of what the tool does, paired with a description of the same criteria is what I look for when browsing.
indvs3@reddit
I'm not pretending to speak for all FOSS users, but I for one tend to avoid branding for the most part. I'm not a coder, but I've worked in IT long enough to have learned to understand what code does. The best "sales pitch" imho is functionality.
kombiwombi@reddit
I have worked in free software all.my life, some the shareware era. Branding and marketing are critical: they don't take much additional work, and they bring a lot more usage and contributors to your project.
This isn't the same as having the product direction set by marketing.
And yeah, functionality matters. As marketing people say "you have to meet the 'brand promise'".
For a small project not being repellent to marketing is sufficient. So explaining what the product does. Giving people a easy runway to trying it, making the joy of using the product apparent throughout.
parrot-beak-soup@reddit
I try not to let marketing, advertising, or branding turn me off. After all, it's just the wealthy's graffiti.
Peruvian_Skies@reddit
That's an interesting wau to look at it. I always saw it as "an attempt to bullshit", as bullshit doesn't care what's true or not (unlike lies, which care about what's true and try to obfuscate it) but tjat only applies to direct markering. Your view includes branding and I think it's better.
parrot-beak-soup@reddit
I actually saw that phrase written as graffiti lol
WinnowedFlower@reddit
I use GNOME for the logo, actually
Marth-Koopa@reddit
I couldn't ever use Fedora because of neckbeards and the m'lady meme
TheTwelveYearOld@reddit (OP)

DurandalJoyeuse@reddit
I remember when in the self hosted sub people lost their minds because of a ROM/iso manager named Crackd Pipe. The name got so much backlash it was renamed I think to Game Vault
WillD2007@reddit
Crackd Pipe is genius I love that
emi89ro@reddit
Not naming specifically, but the "hype marketing" before ghostty was made public was very obnoxious and is why I'll probably never use it.
Also, kinda niche, but Coq has had issues from it's name.
TheTwelveYearOld@reddit (OP)
Tbf Ghostty was overhyped by its tester, the dev didn't mean to market it the way it did.
Alenicia@reddit
I think the only real app that I actively avoid that I can think of is OpenOffice. >_<
I just prefer to use LibreOffice because there's so much baggage around OpenOffice that I'd prefer not to really contribute towards that.
johncate73@reddit
OpenOffice is basically abandonware, which is reason enough.
nouskeys@reddit
Any VPN's branding, basically.
KarnuRarnu@reddit
Do you mean marketing? I think their branding is very normal usually. "NameVPN" with a generic business-blue logo or stuff like that.
nouskeys@reddit
No, are you kidding.
crazyyfag@reddit
I kind of get a weird reaction to using KDE sometimes because everything is named Kardashian style. Like you didn’t have to flex so hard with Konsole… lol
That said, the actual de/software is amazing
ahappywaterheater@reddit
eXoDos looks like they have used AI generated picture for their Linux page. I couldn’t be sure if it was or not. Their software is amazing though!
edparadox@reddit
Not for FOSS projects.
1369ic@reddit
I'm a die-hard Void user, but the logo is bad. Honestly, I can't think of a better one, but it'd be better off with just a V in a nice font. Great distro, though.
pfp-disciple@reddit
Y' know, I've been using Void for about a year, and I can't think of their logo without looking it up. Not even a clue - no color, pattern, nor anything comes to mind.
Weird
1369ic@reddit
Yeah, but kind of in line with the distro. When people ask me why I like it, I usually mention that it's a no-drama distro. No breakage on the machine drama, no user-base drama or haters, etc. I only mention the logo sometimes because branding used to be part of what I did, and it really ain't great. Nothing's perfect.
sublime_369@reddit
I haven't but this example is pretty heinous. At a cursory glance the branding does a great disservice to the product.
bp019337@reddit
As long as it doesn't get in the way of functionality and isn't in your face gross (by my standards) then have at it.
I mean how many of us has been saved by Remi? Whilst I would never call his branding bad, it does make it a bit difficult at times to explain to a stick up the arse security officer that Remi repo is a legit source for PHP!
Jonrrrs@reddit
The shiny "glass design" flagshiped by apple and followed by many others instantly turns me off.

C5-O@reddit
Yeah, tho that's more just "Being a bigot" than "bad branding" I think
georgehank2nd@reddit
Branding? When I got into FLOSS in the late 80s, projects didn't do branding. Well, most stuff was text files anyway, since the web didn't even exist yet. I still don't give enough of a fuck to be potentially turned off by branding.
McDonaldsWitchcraft@reddit
Anything that makes it recognizable can be branding, including the name. Unless it's called something like "text editor program".
eatmynasty@reddit
I won’t use GIMP because of the name
matt-x1@reddit
I don't care about branding that much and an ugly logo is fine too me. However, AI generated images send the signal that the project team is ignoring ethical and moral standards. To my knowledge there is no AI company that paid compensation to every creator of works used for training data and who also minimises environmental impact of datacenters, therfore using AI = amoral. I do not want to support such projects in any way.

visualglitch91@reddit
SchildiChat
ImaginedUtopia@reddit
If we exclude video games then not really. I was never able to get into using TeamSpeak but that's more because of the UI/UX feeling severely outdated (that was 10 years ago) rather than the branding.
