Yes. I said as much in my post above when I mentioned the thing about talking avoiding confusion. We already agree on our preferred way and why, you don’t need to prove it to me.  But it’s too late. The “Xennial” with a Z crowd is here. They are not gonna agree. Better to accept both ways than argue back and forth with no attainable outcome.

I agree. That’s why I choose to say it that way. I’m just saying we should ratify both pronunciations, accept them both moving forward, and stop having this argument all the time on this sub.

It is, can, and ought to be both/either. I say ecks-ennial because we say the X in Gen X and that’s clarifying, especially in conversation when otherwise people would hear a Z. It also avoids confusion in relation to Gen Z or Zilllennials. To me these are both clear and sufficient reasons. But hey lots of X words sans hyphen get the Z treatment so it makes sense that option would be normal to many folks.  Tomato Tomato. Let’s all be friends.

G standing for graphics is irrelevant. Acronyms don’t work that way, they stand on their own. Look no further than scuba, laser, awol, or jpeg. G in English has two ways of being pronounced, with sufficient precedent for either being applied to “gif”. Gin and gift are the go-to examples.  Either way is linguistically absolutely fine and SEW chose the soft G. Say it however you want but the other side isn’t wrong.

When did he claim to be a linguistics expert? People who invent things get to name them. Pronouncing a new word that has two potential, legitimate options isn’t a “skill” it’s a choice.

Ice Cream Cones cereal memory unlocked. I always wanted them, but don't think I ever got to try them. Bummed the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cereal isn't on this list. It was basically chex with marshmallows.

It’s arbitrary. I don’t think being a “such and such” kid = “nostalgic teen years.” I get nostalgic about both 80s stuff and 90s stuff. I think people are allowed to claim being an 80s and 90s kid alike, depending on when they have formative memories either way. It can be both/and.

Lifesavers Holes. Would anyone here even remember them? They lasted ~1 year, from 1990-1992ish.

I'm not sad at all, just calling out bad logic. Acronyms are not pronounced based on their constituent words. You don't say "scubba" for scuba, "lass-ear" for laser, or "jay-feg" for jpeg. Instead, we pronounce acronyms as their own word. "Gif" became controversial because English abounds with g words that have both soft and hard pronunciations, and words like "gift" and "gin" both stand as precedents for our little interchange format. So if you want to say gif with a hard g, that's fine by me! I'm not anti hard g. Just don't insist on made up rules to support what amounts to a preference and then clown people for saying it a different, totally reasonable, way.

I think "zennial" sounds dumber because it needlessly buries the origin of the word when spoken and unnecessarily opens the door for confusion with "Zillenials" and other Gen Z related terms. "X" makes it clear.

There are definitely two developed schools of thought on it, and there have been a number of posts about it. Not sure it's a rift? I just get mad when people say the other way is definitely "wrong". Based on what? It's all preferences. I say the X, personally.

No, not "definitely". Both pronunciations are recognized. As a portmanteau of "Gen-X" and "Millennial" it makes more sense to me to say the "X".
