If you only had £2000 to spend on a car, what would you buy?

Have a look at a VW Up. They're economical, easy to repair, and parts are easy to come by too. Just check for rust around the fuel cap it it's pre-2017 as these didn't have rear arch liners as standard, and you'll be laughing.

What's your daily water usage? Welsh Water reckons on 100L per person per day

Can I swap Energy Tarifs before cap increase & delay the start date to after cap increase?

Posted by BbumblingIdioms@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 12 comments

daniscross@reddit

This doesn't make much sense... The price cap is what's set by Ofgem, and it limits the maximum amount suppliers can charge (per unit). If you take out a fixed contract now, whatever the unit rates are (for gas and electric) will be what you pay for the 12 months, irrespective of what the price cap is in July.

Should I use car insurance or pay privately?

>Your premiums will rise, not as drastically as if it was your fault and you lost your NCBs, but it'll still go up. I see this a lot, and wonder if it's either a myth or not as common as it used to be? I had someone driving an Ocado van shunt me while I was stopped in traffic. Absolutely minimal damage to my vehicle, but enough that he has to report it to his employer, so I felt compelled to report it to my insurers in case he suddenly changed his mind and developed an injury or tried to make a claim against me for whatever reason. That was two years ago, and I add this no fault accident when searching for insurers at renewal time. I also remove it, just for curiosity. It makes no difference to the cost in the top 10 or so results.

Have a look at a VW Up. Cheap to buy and run, and very reliable, even with high mileage. Get one pre-2017 and tax is only £20 per year. Just make sure you check around the filler cap for rust if you like the look of an earlier one. The earlier models don't have rear arch liners, so moisture and debris get kicked up into the rear panel and can cause rust. Other than that, cheap to buy, insure, tax, and maintain.

Has anyone actually landed a permanent 4-day week job in the UK? How did you find it?

Posted by Fit_Strawberry_6518@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 157 comments

The distinction is there are roles which pay normal full-time wage despite only working four days per week, and without condensing all the hours into those days.

I have had three gas leaks (the joys of owning a shit house) in the past couple of years, and they've never repaired it there and then. They do a pressure test, tell you where the leak is, then cap the supply. But given them their dues, they always attend within 45 minutes regardless of the time of day. Fortunately, I have home emergency cover through my bank account, so all leaks were dealt with for free later on.

Can someone please explain the reasoning behind this?

Most watches (Garmin etc) provide live tracking, so you can share this with contacts automatically if that gives you more confidence. You'll have to run with your phone for it to work, but worth taking it anyway in case of an emergency. Strava provides a similar service (beacon) if you can't afford a watch.

Where do all the daffodils come from?

Posted by Inevitable-Debt4312@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 42 comments

daniscross@reddit

This was on James O'Brien's Mystery Hour recently. It turns out the Romans actually brought daffodils over from the Iberian Peninsula nearly 2,000 years ago. They're basically immortal. They can live for over a century without any help from us. Most of the "random" patches you see on road verges were actually part of big council projects after the war to cheer everyone up. Because they are so hardy, they just naturalised and kept spreading. Now they look like a permanent part of the landscape, but they are mostly just 1950s landscaping that refused to die.

In the middle between Oxford and Aylesbury (Oxford/Buckinghamshire border). Literally every garage (six) is booked up for three weeks in the nearest town, and three I've tried that a further away are booking in for 1 May at the earliest! I don't even have a unique car either, just a boring ol' VW Up!

I don't understand what you're getting at? We pay EA an annual affiliation fee. This provides insurance through Marsh that provides public liability insurance and non-members are also covered. This is for club training sessions, social events, and committee meetings. The same as if they were affiliated athletes.

Chromebooks are designed to be efficient for online use, with enough storage for everyday users. Most mid-range models come with at least 128GB of storage, and some up to 1TB. You also get 15GB of free online storage with a standard account, and 2TB of Gemini Pro free for a year. There's a reason Chromebooks are so popular, they offer a balance of affordability and functionality. Your reaction is a bit over the top.

Nobody has a crystal ball to know what's going to happen in a week, a month, or even in October when your fixed deal expires. You might as well stay on it as there's no better options at the moment (all fixed tariffs are going up) and see what happens between now and October.

Mozillion is absolute rubbish when it comes to support. They feel like a right amateur outfit once they actually bother to respond. When you consider the massive WiFi Calling outages a few months back and the fact that roaming for calls and texts was non-existent all last summer, I would steer well clear. You are much better off with 1p Mobile.

What do you think of the new Chinese Electric Cars growing in the UK? Would you ever own one?

Posted by laservole@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 651 comments

I would always go with more established brands as they have spent decades building reliable service and parts networks. Some newer Chinese brands seem to struggle with parts availability. I've seen horror stories of simple repairs leaving a car off the road for months because manufacturers prioritise parts for new production over supporting existing customers.
