St. Patrick's Day - should we cancel the parade(s)?

Simple, it's optics... how it looks. St. Patrick's Day and Cinco de Mayo in the US are celebrations to share the culture of immigrants. These celebrations though certainly have an American twist. Cinco de Mayo is not even celebrated in Mexico outside of Puebla... but it is celebrated in the US because of immigrants from the state of Puebla. It's inclusive. It is a way to share history and culture with fellow Americans. To wave a flag of another nation in protest of America is divisive. You are basically showing allegiance to your home country over America, while enjoying the freedoms and better opportunities provided by America. If you are an American citizen, then the flag that belongs to you is the American flag, not the Mexican flag...that's part of becoming a citizen, leaving that other country behind.

In celebration of Irish American culture, not protest. On May 5th, we'll be listening to mariachi bands, eating tacos, drinking cheap beer and shooting tequila too... all in celebration, not protesting.

That is a celebration of culture, not a protest. For one day, everyone is "Irish", wearing green or getting pinched, drinking green beer, eating soda bread, etc. And this celebration is really more of an American culture thing... Saint Patrick's day in Ireland was always more subdued and a religious holiday until recently. Kinda like Cinco de Mayo... one day celebration that is celebrated very differently in America vs. Mexico. It is a day in America to celebrate Mexican culture. You proposing to cancel that too? If you can't see the difference between Irish flags on St. Patrick's Day ( or Mexican flags on Cinco de Mayo) vs Mexican flags being flown in protest of the American government, then I can't help you.

"Lmao bro waving a flag does not pledge allegiance to that country, that’s such an American mindset." Well, what country are we in dumbass? "The flag represents your culture and heritage, has quite literally nothing to do with the actual country or government." No, you culture and heritage can be represented by your language, your food, your art, religion, etc. You can have your culture without flying the flag of another country in ours. If flying that flag is not a pledge of allegiance then why have I seen signs that say "I will die for these colors"? Sounds like a pledge of allegiance to me. "Only in America do you care so much about the flag and put so much weight into it". Again, what country are you in? If you realize that about America, wouldn't it make more sense to be respectful of our culture and heritage to gain support of your protest?

It is not your right to pledge allegiance to another country yet expect to live and prosper here. I don't agree with everything the administration is doing here, but I also don't agree with the waving of the Mexican flag. I assume that you left Mexico for a better life here. If you want to pledge allegiance to Mexico and fly that flag, then go back.

Can the 2nd amendment folks just leave their guns at home for just one day when while visiting the Texas State Fair? Is it really that hard to do?

No, that is not at all what I said. Paxton’s current opinion seems to be that they, the State Fair of Texas, being a private entity can not ban licensed carriers from the fair or post 30.06 signs and because they contract with the city of Dallas, then the city is liable for those signs. The court thus far has ruled that the city of Dallas did not post and is not liable. That is all that has been ruled. His previous opinion was that the private entity could post signs banning firearms and the financial penalty from the state per day would not apply as they were not a governmental body. But the previous opinion also stated that there would be no penalty to a licensed carrier either, as long as the carrier was not prohibited from carrying by any other statute. AG opinions are not binding, so now we will have to see how it plays out in court. The court ruling in favor of Dallas not being responsible for the State Fair of Texas having a policy to ban handguns does not surprise me. But the real question is if the ban is actually enforceable, and that will remain in question until someone is denied access, ticketed, or arrested for carrying at the State Fair. State Fair policy does not equal enforceable law by the city / state. The property is still publicly owned and unless it is an area off limits by statute, like the Cotton Bowl during a football game, it may not be legally enforceable. The issue will not be solved for the fair this year.

Maybe, maybe not. Depends on how the suit was written. Even in Paxton’s previous opinion that he has since reversed, the opinion was that as a private entity, they can post signs banning firearms and not be fined by the state like the city or other governmental bodies for posting an illegal sign. However, on the flip side of that, it doesn’t change the ownership of the property and the signs are unenforceable, meaning even if the police were to arrest or ticket a licensed carrier it would be thrown out in court… could perhaps even open the city up to a lawsuit. That second part is being overlooked, but it was also in the opinion from the AG. Once someone is actually denied access, ticketed, or arrested by DPD the question before the court changes.

You are correct, those locations are restricted and outlined by law. Fair Park does not meet any of the restrictions that were outlined by legislators in the law.

As am I, but the State Fair ban is not logical. They are banning licensed, concealed carriers in reaction to a shooting last year by an unlicensed person. There is not any evidence of issues involving license holders in previous years. The shooter last year was unlicensed and should not have had a firearm at the fair. Licensed carriers are law abiding by and large, so the only people this ban affects are the law abiding which were not the problem. I do think the law needs to be challenged as it is ambiguous… Fair Park is publicly owned and does not meet the requirements by law to ban firearms by the government. They are leasing it to a private party, but it is still publicly owned. The legislature needs to address if a private entity who is leasing public lands can ban firearms from that public land.

During colonial times, training was 6 days per year. Many “ammosexuals” go to a range and practice shooting more than that. Also remember, a large portion of the gun community happen to be veterans.

The wording “well regulated” as used at the time the amendment was written meant to be in good working order, well supplied… that is why it is the right of the people to keep and bear arms, as the people made up the militia and used their personally owned firearms.

The shooter last year was not licensed. They only allowed licensed carriers last year. They had metal detectors last year and they don’t know how he got the gun in. Oklahoma state fair does not allow firearms of any kind, had metal detectors last year and had a shooting last year. They don’t know how the shooter got the weapon into the fair grounds. Here’s a hint though…. Not everyone at the fair buys a ticket, and passes through the metal detectors at a gate.

You sure about that? That whole process means you have submitted fingerprints and is a much thorough background investigation than the instant check when purchasing a firearm. A Class A or Class B misdemeanor is grounds for rejection of a license in Texas, but does not stop someone from being able to purchase a firearm.

You must not know that the background check for a concealed carry license is much more thorough than the NICS background check to purchase a firearm. Class A and B misdemeanors can result in disqualification for a concealed carry license, but they are not barriers to purchasing a firearm. Banning concealed carry licensees is not going to stop gun crime. Concealed carry licensees by and large are a very law abiding group. The Oklahoma State Fair does not allow firearms… they also had a shooting last year. 17 year old kid, they don’t know how he got the gun into the fair grounds. Do you think that everyone that is at the fair enters through the gate with a ticket?

Being licensed means that you have been background checked and have been fingerprinted. I would trust a licensed carrier over an unlicensed one…

And how many of those things are committed by concealed carry license holders? Concealed carry license holders are by and large a law abiding group. They are background checked and fingerprinted to obtain the license. This ban does not make the fair any safer… it only affects law abiding citizens who will abide by the request. The criminals will still try to sneak their weapons into the fair grounds. The guy that did the shooting last year was not licensed.

Most of the guns used in mass shootings have been obtained "legally", meaning background checks were passed. When a person is kicked out of the military due to mental issues, yet they can get a license to be a security guard and pass a background check, the system has failed. That would be the place to start in my opinion.
