I have to go shop but not sure how I feel going to actual stores. Might just have to shop online. Not even sure if my question is insensitive. :(

Look at the odds this way. 600 people died in “mass”shootings last year in the US. 46,000 died in automobile accidents. That means you are over 75 times more likely to die driving to or from the malls than by a gunman. Another example of the media making you paranoid the prevalence of such an event.

I don't know if it's true but I recall reading somewhere that more people die driving to skiydiving "drop zones" then die in actual skydives gone wrong. Either way, life is simply random. The one and only time I went skydiving, I had a tandem partner who was supposedly on his final jump after doing something like 6000 of them. The jump was delayed by 24 hours because my buddy bailed and caused the reservation to expire. Turns out that, if we had been there, we might have watched a solo jumper die when his gear deployed but tore and eventually failed. It was his 31st jump. At the end of the day, life is random. The cold, hard reality is that unless you go looking for trouble or you hang out in high-crime areas (or both), you'll almost certainly pass through life without coming close to being shot. But, you may be terribly unlucky (or lucky). I went to Iraq 10 years ago for a vacation. Nobody attacked our group. When I was 7, I found my brother's handguns and picked them up. (No trigger pulling, mind you, but you can see how this could've turned tragic.) I took a class at Virginia Tech that was a massacre site six years later. Life is random. When somebody waves a magic wand and makes guns disappear, I'm sure we'll all know. Until then, I'll keep living my life despite the shooting. I hope others will too.

Over 20,000 people died in gun murders last year and over 25,000 people committed suicide by guns. Plus, there were close to a 1,000 people who died in random gun safety incidents. One story I’m reminded of is a mom being accidentally shot by a 2 year old as she was on a work zoom call.. this only happens in America. And these numbers are warzone numbers lol. Nobody is exaggerating anything. Children are being trained for active shooter incidents.. none of this is normal except if this was a warzone.

I have a statistic. The chances of a mass shooting happening at the Allen outlet mall were 1:1 last weekend. The media doesn’t have to do anything if you or someone you knee were there you might hear about it. Great way to not be a victim is to make sure people are not apathetic and vote in racist gun nuts.

Odds are one way of looking at managing personal risk, [but a terrible way of excusing the problem. ](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/04/26/what-the-data-says-about-gun-deaths-in-the-u-s/) Let’s look at this another way, but use the 2021 stats (706) because I couldn’t find your 600 for 2022. The UK, which has a broadly similar gathering culture (and probably more in-person social overall) than the US had [35 total murders by firearm in 2021.](https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-7654/) In totality. In Australia, there were *zero* mass shootings in 2021… 2022… 2023… and there are barely any since 1990, and those that [are listed mostly aren’t random acts of violence](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_massacres_in_Australia). Gun murders and gun violence generally is so low [it’s not even broken out in their official crime stats. ](https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/people/crime-and-justice/recorded-crime-victims/latest-release) Looking to the North, Canada, we’re actually much closer to the US, and while more polite, Canadians have a lot in common with the US demographically and culturally. In 2021, firearms do get used in a lot of crime, in Canada, but people don’t tend to get shot as much as they do in the US. [297 for 2021. ](https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/85-005-x/2022001/article/00002-eng.htm) So back to the US… in addition to the 706 Mads shooting victims in 2021, [there were 20,252 gun murders alone](https://injuryfacts.nsc.org/home-and-community/safety-topics/guns/) (suicides is a higher number still). The countries I cited above are, culturally, quite similar to the US. We all like movies, malls, live sports, cars, and all that shit. There’s minor differences, but an alien couldn’t tell the difference. What’s the difference?

They are culturally homogenous with more morality and respect for people than the U.S.

I think you're both right. It's a real problem that needs to be fixed and at the same time it's quite unlikely to affect you personally. Should we be doing something politically to make it stop? Yes. Should we be living in fear for our lives, probably not.

Totally agree.

Depends on whether you're looking at this from a Frequentist or Bayesian statistical standpoint. There is evidence to suggest that copycat shootings are a real phenomenon and can occur when the media coverage of a high-profile shooting inspires others to carry out similar attacks. So from a Bayesian perspective, using recent shootings as a prior could be useful in predicting the likelihood of future copycat shootings occurring. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayesian_inference https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayes'_theorem

I haven’t been to a mall in years. Since before covid. And after COVID i was used to not going so I just never went back. There’s nothing I need there I can’t get somewhere else. I don’t feel like it’s an insensitive questions. People are going through some shit right now. Everyone reacts how they react. For some, malls aren’t an option right now. No need to feel bad asking. I’m sorry you’re struggling right now. You’re not alone.

I'm trying to not attend malls as well but the only thing that draws me back is the feeling I need to try on certain clothing before purchasing. Besides that they've really lost their appeal.

There are plenty of facets to address from the weapons, the individuals behind them, the culture we live in and the influences on all them. Look for the helpers, if you were on Keith Self and Chip Roy’s call tonight you already know they aren’t it.

To be honest, the closest mall to me is Town East Mall and it hasn't felt safe for years. But I prefer to online shop anyway. Do what makes YOU feel safe. I would think there may be a larger police presence at some of the malls at the moment though.

Has Town East really gotten that bad? It’s been maybe twelve years since I’ve been there. I remember it being kind of run down but nothing bad. The area was noticeably depressed from when I would go there as a kid in the late-eighties and early-nineties.

Yeah I do. Odds of you being shot are very low. Doesn't excuse what happened.

Yes you won’t get hit by lightning killed by a shark or a mass shooting. It’s a possibility of course but statistically too low to be concerned with. If you drive on 635 or US 75 you engage in infinitely more hazardous behavior that is far more likely to result in your demise, and you do this without fear

I felt apprehensive walking into Walmart yesterday. We parked far out, and I was constantly scanning the parking lot. Not a good feeling.

I went to the park to play tennis on Monday and was hyper vigilant of my surroundings the entire time. I went to go have lunch at a restaurant today and when I got in there it was busy but with the anxiety of not knowing what could happen, I took my order to go and ate in my car. I needed to pick up essentials at target and there was hardly any people in there. I think it’s still too soon for me. Allen wasn’t the only bad news in TX this weekend. There was the lady who stole the machine gun in Converse at a shooting range and she couldn’t be found. Then there was the man in Forney who was shot to death by his neighbor as he was leaving his house because the neighbor didn’t want to have Mexicans living in his neighborhood. I’m still processing everything myself and can’t imagine feeling safe going to the mall but everyone is different.

Just be aware of your surroundings. That means knowing what's going on around you where the exits are and where potential escape points are. Being aware and being afraid aren't the same thing.
View on Reddit #1736914

The people who were murdered didn't do so because they weren't aware enough.

Your odds of being injured or dying in a mass shooting are low. No need to lock yourself up in your home.

Yeah. I feel like the odds (while not zero) are pretty low that it happens at the exact moment i happen to be there. Am i downplaying what occurs? No, i just think ill be lucky

My boyfriend and I went to a park. A neighborhood park, but one that was bustling with kids, soccer players, and picnickers. I still didn't feel completely at ease and couldn't help but scan my surroundings every so often. I think it'll be a while before I feel completely safe going to any populated public place.
