Daniel Owen - Is 8GB of VRAM actually that bad in 2026?

Posted by Antonis_32@reddit | hardware | View on Reddit | 97 comments

cloud_t@reddit

Thanks for the TLDW! I want to add that this is a sad state of things, where people with less money for more than an 8GB card will often intersect with not knowing how to tweak optimised settings for their gpu. This is why it's good that we have entities like Digital Foundry (namely Alex and his great PC-focused videos) with their own generic optimised setting recommendations.

[Hardware Canucks] The New Razer Blade 16 has a Hidden Problem. (Performance regressions & lousy thermals versus 2025 model)

This is true, but also an unfortunate coincidence that slim gaming laptops are a doomed concept. Throwing an oversized (and overpriced) GPU die inside an even smaller than usual thermal envelope, to try and compensate, will still eventually soak the casing (and faster than a larger laptop). Yes, a metal casing helps but that heat is going often to your hands, which is not enjoyable at a point.

Only because we still live in a society where, for some reason, people struggle for fame, power and recognition. When people have other, better sources of personal joy and inequality is based on the merits of DOING GOOD FOR ALL HUMANITY AND NATURE, maybe we no longer need patents and royalties and attribution and we can universally accept that our merits are not only ours, but of everything around us that got us where we are. Maybe then we will also understand our true purpose in the world is not just fucking nietzing it around.

Depends on price. Can you find a 3070Ti at the same price? And even if you could, we must take account inflation since the 3070Ti came a good 5y ago.

To be fair to both of you and myself, these days, node tech info is kind of opaque due to market influence. The stock price is heavily affected by these perceptions. Intel started this trend IIRC with their ways to spin their 13, 12 and 10nm tech as comparable to what TSMC was doing at the time (8 and 6, right?), but then everyone started noticing how that impacted stock price and went along. A really shitty practice IMHO, and makes these arguments on nodes and their impact really confusing.

Slightly, yes. But it's like 3-12% depending on jump. The best guideline we have was when Intel was doing Tic-toc on CPUs (one year arch change, another node change) - we could compare the same architecture/design on different nodes. Of course it may be slightly different for GPUs, but my take is it affects even less because these days, GPU architecture actually deprioritizes focus on raster perf (in favor of tensor/ml/media performance and mahbe memory bandwidth).

Intel is gaining a lot of terrain on software and drivers, last I heard. It also plays kinda well with Intel CPUs, but then again that may be seen as a disadvantage.

It has less than half the count of transistors than the GB203 (5080), and about the same amount of transistors the 5060 Ti. The math ads up. It's all about having the latest tech. But supposedly the larger die size allows it better cooling than a 5060 Ti for the same amount of electricity going in (I think).

Apple had the right strategy, in theory, to get into a market that was somewhat stable years before by Oculus and HTC, even Google and partners. Problem is they expected the same use cases with novel hardware that had everything to NOT have the same use cases, and they came in without a single (or even remotely close to) killer app. ...and developers had 0 incentive to produce one with the absurdities of getting the hardware for them, let alone get them to potential buyers of their app.

Replying late but I see your point. The holy grail has always been installing Linux on a mac device, but as you probably know, Apple has been making it harder with proprietary, closed, unavailable drivers and now even a super locked in bootloader and boot chain overall. There has been progress with (the previously known as) Asahi Linux and some models are now pretty much fully compatible. But of course it's still a finicky process. But getting Linux on any computer working with all hw 100% perfect is usually finicky.

Yeah I mostly got your point but that has not been my experience. I have regularly neglected 2 or even 3 major version updates on my m1 (in use since 2020) and have never had an issue. People before me (context: I'm a late mac adopter circa 2018 with a touchbar model) given I mostly use them work-issued) and ih my field (IT) have also even neglected 4 versions and did fine. Granted, we nostly do web and cross-platform or Android development (read: not Apple-centric dev which would likely require specific Xcode). For those tasks, VScode, Jetbrains stuff (think Intellij, Android Studio) etc are not a problem. And most other tooling also keeps working and keeps releasing with compatibility for 2-4 versions before current one.

I remember that macOs will go for a good 4-6y longer on security updates after they freeze upgrades for particular units. Also, last I recall there hasn't still been an Apple Silicon device that stopped getting new iterations of macOs, which leads me to believe they will have much larger support for M-series chips there. Which also tracks due to ARM being so much more fucking efficient.

This is very true. The VIDAA OS update a few months ago made changing input a nightmare which forces you to see the home screen - an 80% screen ad. Not only that, but you now require at least 2 more button presses for changing to any input, and particularly to change to one of the cast options (music, screen share etc) requires a good 10 clicks.

Personally, and from the outside indeed (Portugal to be clear), I think Argentina's problem is backpedaling. Like many countries which have cyclic governments, they simply do not have long-term application of their policies and instead double down expenditure with no wait for long-term results. They effectively spend money to block money that was spent trying to achieve something. A great example are subsidies and social policy expenditure: education, health, housing, nutrition, social rehabilitation - these things take decades to have a positive effect and they only work if you keep the most important commodity (people and infrastructure) in the place that invested on them. But when one government that rules for a handful of years is then replaced by another which makes it all go to waste, and does so by lining the pockets of those that abuse the commodity (the private sector and external companies).

I'm sorry if I am talking about 12h workdays in a topic about how 12h workdays are supposed to "help" the economy. I'm sorry for asking the billion pesos question of "how could people working more hours for the same salary, or work more hours over a week or month or year, have any effect on GDP/HDI/poverty, when many countries are thriving with 8h workdays or less, sometimes even working 4-day weeks?" I am so sorry. Did I say sorry?
