Doesn't mean that they have been blacklisted, many of them don't even have beef with amd
Seems like amd didn't have much expectations for the product and didn't make a huge marketing push for it
Gn's basis for the blacklisting was that amd didn't answer their questions about "drivers", and they used the 9950x3d2 launch as a powder keg to exaggerate the blacklisting situation probably for clicks
"They didn't blacklist reviewers, they just didn't provide some of them with early access to information, a review sample or answers to their questions"
AMD is a company with >30,000 employees and $35 billion revenue and not some small garage startup. Them "forgetting" a good chunk of reviewes with a new product launch is an even worse show of embarrassingly high incompetence.
They can't simply buy it because their livelyhood depends on them getting a review out with everyone else and not weeks later when all discussion has already died down.
"They can't simply buy it because their livelyhood depends on them getting a review out with everyone else and not weeks later when all discussion has already died down."
Have some self dignity, my man. I'm sure your super heroes can manage to buy the processor and give us an unbiased review, all for our sake, because that's just the type of person they are.
Did they forgot to sample LTT etc? Actively block Hardwareluxx from getting a sample from retailers? Don't think this has anything to do with AMD "forgetting" about reviewers, rather AMD didn't want particularly many reviews out on release since it was an underwhelming release.
Man, GN's Steve really seems to have gone off the reservation the last few years. What a shame. From reliable, data-driven analysis to cynical, negativity-laden rant factory.
what? I consider his new approach as the more correct one, there is not so much hw to test so why not deep into stuff that might affect us in a bad way. It is not like the other hw outlets disappear just because GN Steve do "some" journalistic work. Pretty sure that people that see what is happing in the world adopt the viewpoint u appropriate as "negativity-laden rant factory"...
He's going off the deep end. In this video response HW Steve provided more context than GN Steve did in his. GN focused on himself and retaliation for his "jorno work", HW focused on the situation in general. In his video on NAND GN omitted some details which were rather important to the conversation. Which erodes trust.
By doing these rant videos filled with jokes and callbacks instead of doing more level headed pieces he undermines his own work.
Kinda explain why GN pivot to be sensationalist. His channel would pretty much die if the excitement about PC dies out. What other way to "rekindle" that excitement than enciting rage
Another detail from the video that is actually interesting is how AMD had explicitly forbidden retailers from providing CPUs to reviewers despite there being ample supply and retailers apparently having had that stock for a long time.
So even if AMD hadn't sampled them, they also blocked reviewers from buying/getting their own early.
And he follows up commenting how AMD sort of poisoned the well as it seems as certain reviewers got preferential treatment, as if they were to provide a positive review (something one commenter in this thread has already claimed further down). Which Steve saw as a major problem/dilemma had he known about this beforehand.
D'uh!
Which Steve saw as a major problem/dilemma had he known about this beforehand.
Which Steve? I assume the HUB one as it's this video. Bruh, seriously!? These people sure do like to act like ostriches, don't they.
I don't get why gn thinks that amd not answering his questions unrelated to new product launches would imply a blacklist. Like does he really think that he is entitled to a "vip hotline" with these companies and that they should help whenever he has a new idea for a video?
My impression is that their prior relationship was one where AMD would answer such questions about things like driver support for products. Since it changed after GN's video about AMD's political activities, it seems reasonable to think the two are related.
I'm surprised regarding all of the hatred towards Gamers Nexus. Did anyone here watch the GN video on why they think they are being blacklisted? I think it's appropriate for journalists to call out shady behaviors from corporations.
What an odd video. It almost feels like he's apologizing for getting a sample while others didn't, like making sure people knows he didn't sell out to be included
At this point i'd say just blacklist GN. When you jump straight to the most maximally malicious assumption on any action why should anyone work with you?
It's really disappointing how reliant they are on drama within the industry and how eager they are to attribute mistakes to malice. I stopped watching them after how hard they fumbled their CS2 benchmarks and how hard they pushed back at meeting the standards they hold others to.
It is exhausting to see them assume everything in bad faith when they handled their own mistakes in bad faith.
This is the video but here's a comment I made last year to summarize:
GN isn't perfect, like when they benchmarked CS2 while keeping the framerate cap on making the entire video pointless. And then to add insult to injury, when their audience told them that they made a critical mistake they didn't pull the video, they didn't make it obvious it was misleading, they didn't update their clickbait thumbnail with a warning. They prefixed the video with "[Outdated - New Tests]" and this hilariously defensive statement from the description "This testing is accurate and representative to the performance when sticking to the in-game menu".
Well, Hub have been pretty pro AMD for the longest time, from the moment Ryzen came out on the market, even though zen2 was not the top dog in games Hub had their test bench being an Ryzen one. So I doubt AMD would ignore their biggest and longest standing "partner" even if they drop other PR partners.
I am not saying that HUB is an outlet that never criticises AMD but they are not stepping on AMD toes like others do.
GNs "Reviews“ have been by far the most "pro AMD" simply by their methodology.
They test AMD CPUs in an overclocked state with the ideal RAM while using the same non ideal configuration for Intel CPUs.
I dont agree, I consider them about on the same level of pro:iness as Hub, but what sets GN apart is that Steve use harsh language to really show to emphasise the importance of what they think is wrong. And they dig deep into issues, and when they have correspondence between a company/part they have issues with they show it. While other outlets are more "respectful" with the company/part they have issues with.
My brain is like lacking the words right now to put down on paper/in a comment, but I hope this is making my view on the issues. Hub is not as antagonistic towards the companies as say GN is, the issue companies have towards outlets like GN.
As you write this are you aware we've dedicated not one, but two videos exposing just how absolute trash AMD's marketing team is? You'll also struggle to find more negative coverage of AMD's latest Zen 5 processors as you will from us in our day one coverage and the follow up content. Do you need links to brush up on all this info?
Yes I watch your channel pretty avidly, since very early days, but criticising the PR of a company is not really the same as what GN does. They are very antagonistic towards these companies openly to really show their audience the importance of what ever the issue might be.
Even using strong language to emphasise the importance of the issues, wrong doings of the companies and Steve’s personal view on the matter at hand.
Such behaviour is not looked fondly on by companies, even I have been in a position where I had to cut partners off because of their criticism were seen as very severe by the top-brass compared to criticism given by other partners because of shared history and most important of all not the same tone of their criticism.
calling zen5 for zen5% is nothing in the big picture of things or how one says it.
HUB calls AMD out a lot in their GPU bs. The Nvidia - $50 nonsense and not supporting prior generations of cards with FSR is literally killing AMD's ability to gain market share. These are just stupid business decisions imo and everyone can see it but AMD.
Never mind backwards compatibility, even the 9000 series users need optiscaler is most games to get fsr4.
Crimson Desert which was an AMD partner didn't have FSR 4...
It's really hard to give AMD any cred on the GPU department. Sure Nvidia is generally more expensive. But at least upscaling is guaranteed. I can't think of any game where FSR exists and DLSS doesn't.
Fine. give link to one video from them that is biased towards AMD. And i dont mean a video where they crown the 9800x3d as the best gaming cpu or shit like that. im talking actual unfair bias. Lets see how "pro AMD" they really are.
Clickbait youtube title - like his own conclusion, A LOT of reviewers didn't get review samples, calling it a blacklist is genuinely just disingenuous.
You can put the focus all on Steve not getting a sample but when TechPowerUp which is my goto place for non-bs chef kiss reviews didn't get one, then like i don't know what you to tell you.
From the GN video, my impression was that Steve (u/Lelldorianx in case he cares to respond) thinks he's blacklisted more because of the lack of answers to even basic product questions (is the Z1 still supported?) rather than just not getting the 9950X3D2 sample.
Every channel is bias these days. I dont feel bad for them not getting review samples. Buy them like the rest of us and do a review and quit complaining.
Wait so now HUB joins the YT drama content like Gamers nexus does too? I guess the views are really going down huh, considering the current market conditions.
Jumpy-Dinner-5001@reddit
It’s hardly a new thing for GN. That’s their general level of "journalism" and accuracy.
But for some reason people will do anything to protect GN. Maybe, this is enough of a wake-up call.
dakjelle@reddit
But for some reason people will do anything to protect companies that couldn't care less about them.
Maybe they should just shut up and go buy some more Linus merchandise so he can afford his private jet.
Jumpy-Dinner-5001@reddit
You mean like GN?
Berufius@reddit
It's kind of sad. They have decent and deep tech reviews, but the constant focus on drama and the victim mentality makes me avoid them now.
SirActionhaHAA@reddit
tldr of the situation
Chris204@reddit
"They didn't blacklist reviewers, they just didn't provide some of them with early access to information, a review sample or answers to their questions"
Huh, like what do you think blackliting means?
DonStimpo@reddit
Like 2 English speaking Tech YouTubers got a review unit. So if it really was a blacklist. Its a long long list.
Chris204@reddit
Sure, that doesn't really make it any better though...
MonoShadow@reddit
Yeah, it's a bad situation. It does throw "AMD blacklisted us for uncovering their ties to US govt" into question though.
outbackdaan@reddit
Have you ever considered he could have just been forgotten? Ignored?
And what is stopping him from buying the processor and doing his review?

AMD's marketing team has been bad for ages. And its not even that team that contacts reviewers.
It's people way down the chain that contact reviewers.
And if there is NDA involved, you don't just give any info.
There might have been no guideline for the reps without giving CPUs.
