Would Opening a Convenience Store in 2026 Be a Terrible Idea?

Just be aware the margins are paper thin, 20pc on average, 5pc for alcohol, nothing really on cigs. It is why ones with the post offices go for much higher prices as you also get a wage with those as a post master. The reason this is important is shrinkage. One bottle of Wine stolen can wipe out your profits for alcohol for the day. So your area is really important, not to sound harsh, there is a reason lots are going behind glass in council estates. Then there are just twats who may come in and wreck your store, happened to one near me, he shut it down as insurance wouldn’t cover and he couldn’t afford a restock. A lot of your profitability is made by joining a symbol group that give you a kick back for buying certain products and spending a certain amount.

Going to be brutal. I work with someone who is 55 doing an apprenceship scheme, if you want a change of careers that is your best bet. Unless you have personal funding, redo your education in a sector you want to work in and apply at that level. Or, apply to jobs you want with zero experience, but know you are up against 10 to 100 people who have probably done it before and hope you have Wolf of Wallstreet sales skills.

You can always change careers, sometimes it is harder to enter some careers then others. /r/ukjobs might be a better bet, but without knowing health issues, education, or even what you want to do... How do we have a clue?

Joke - Masterbate Serious Answer - You can do anything by yourself, I used to travel a lot with work as well, where you are forced to do sit in a hotel room, but you can do Cinema, Theatre, Sports... You also can get some great last minute deals. Then hobbies, look at what you like, you will find really like minded people that do the same thing. Might take a bit of confidence to strike up the conversation, but you make friends that way. I have a few in different continitents where they know my situation and when I am in town we check in.
