Scam, they won't phone police because they are trying to extort you. They may try and scare you though if there anything like the travellers who do the flagging scam.
cgknight1@reddit
Ignore it - if they are travellers, there is no chance at all they will go to the police - they are just trying it on.
So you did check for ID?
Firm_Doughnut_1@reddit
Those travellers don't even let the females go to school after a certain very young age either
CakeHead-Gaming@reddit
"females". Can't you just say women? Girls?
Firm_Doughnut_1@reddit
I could have done, but does it really matter?
Elegant-Mission-4470@reddit
The word is frequently used to purposefully dehumanise women and girls. I'm sure you didn't mean it that way, but avoiding dehumanising language is the better call.
Pogeos@reddit
it's a scientifically correct term, how can it be dehumanising?
aimee94@reddit
I actually find it useful, it gives us advance notice about whether a 'male' is a weirdo.
-captaindiabetes-@reddit
It's not a grammatically correct term
Pogeos@reddit
in what way?
from the dictionary:
female
2 of 2
noun
1
a
: a female person : a woman or a girl
b
: an individual of the sex that is typically capable of bearing young or producing eggs
-captaindiabetes-@reddit
FEMALE | English meaning - Cambridge Dictionary
-adult-swim-@reddit
You know that link shows it as a noun as well?
-captaindiabetes-@reddit
Yea, did you keep reading, or stop right there?
Frescadeedle@reddit
there you go! nearly there! warmer, warmer..... look closer
anabsentfriend@reddit
One is a correct term when referring to anatomy and biology. One is the correct term when referring to a person.
Indecisive-Gamer@reddit
Both are fine.
schnauzap@reddit
Addressing women as females removes the description of them as a living, breathing person with thoughts and feelings. If women constantly referred to men as the 'males' as if they're just things, you'd have the same opinion.
Indecisive-Gamer@reddit
No, there isn't a single man who would care about being called 'a male'. It also doesn't do what you say at all. Nothing about male or female implies lacking thoughts or feelings.
Elegant-Mission-4470@reddit
Many animals and plants are female. Human females are women and girls. Reducing women and girls to merely "females" (unspecified) is dehumanising.
TheBenjisaur@reddit
Look I get a few weird incels started saying females sarcastically lately, and thats annoying.
But its not dehumanising language, it was perfectly correct before and still is.
You can't go around demanding we rapidly change all the words because someone managed to say it in a nasty way.
Euphmism treadmills are bad enough as it is.
Stop giving power to weirdos, what happens when they start saying women in a weird way, are you then going to go around demanding people say ladies instead?
Even worse trying this creates a whole new problem where the friction from changing all the words around creates mass discord from the pressure required to try and enforce the change and now everyone just hates each other a little more.
aimee94@reddit
Or you could just say 'women' instead of 'females' to accommodate other people's feelings instead of making it about yourself 🤷♀️
PolishBicycle@reddit
So science books are dehumanising to women?
7thtimeinheaven@reddit
Yeah dude. It's weird and kind of degrading. Use terms like girls women and ladies in the future.
Indecisive-Gamer@reddit
Caring about this is 100% weirder.
dr_jock123@reddit
Odd_Ingenuity2883@reddit
Yes. Female is an adjective, not a noun. A female what?
DazzleBMoney@reddit
I feel like this sort of pedantry distracts from the actual valid point here
dr_jock123@reddit
Such is modern life
Pineapple-Muncher@reddit
He's a ferengi
AdamMc66@reddit
That’s a hell of a Star Trek reference.
Witty_Lime4596@reddit
But women or girls would be incorrect.
They stop both, which are females.
wigglycal@reddit
Talking about kids in school, the word would always be girls. Adults aren't in school
Witty_Lime4596@reddit
Fair point, in just the UK it would be children.
The US also has travellers, you graduate from highschool at 18 which is an adult.
Witty_Lime4596@reddit
Fair point.
Skeptischer@reddit
How would women or girls be incorrect?
Witty_Lime4596@reddit
The same way you say "male family members"
Female is a singular word that encompasses girls and women.
Witty_Lime4596@reddit
I meant as a singular word.
As in "they don't let girls" wouldn't include women and "they don't let women" wouldn't include girls.
Female is the correct term for both women and girls.
Yes, you could write, they don't let girls or women.
Jonn_Jonzz_Manhunter@reddit
Depends on the travellers, my travelling family let girls go to school for as long as they want to, my 2nd cousin is hoping to go to university in a couple years
LaurenNotABot@reddit
The op is just assuming too ..
Honest_Presence_9619@reddit
You realise 99% of Gypsies and Travellers are completely law abiding right? I bet you think none of them pay Council Tax, either. Don't be a bigot.
Greggs-the-bakers@reddit
Flip that percentage and ill believe you. There's a reason stereotypes exist and a reason that stereotype is shared across all of Europe. A lot of the time they turn up and steal everything that's not bolted down. Everyone I know has a negative encounter or knows someone who has had a negative encounter with them.
Sure not all of them are like this but when you have this being the general opinion of a group of people across an entire continent? Yeah there's some truth to that pal.
chaozules@reddit
Literally! When I worked security on private sites for instance a rail freight yard, we had a whole procedure if we spotted a traveller convoy looking for some where to break into and settle down.
We had to have double the amount of guards, double the patrols and make sure all gates are always locked because they broke into a nearby site stole all the copper wiring and then extorted the land owner and made him pay them a couple grand because he was trying to sell the building and couldn't if they destroyed it.
ManicTonic22@reddit
Stereotypes exist because of bigotry
chaozules@reddit
Man, its so weird how alot of us have had bad experiences with the 1% what a coincidence!
Thesladenator@reddit
I mean the ones that broke into a local park near us damaging the fence, littered everywhere, had a dog that attacked someone and then they stole some local goats (that were retrieved).
They certainly weren't law abiding.
Potential-Wheel-5899@reddit
What a load of absolute horseshit, as a group they illegally trespas on public land, churn it up with caravans and motorbikes, and leaves all their rubbish and shit.
ElusiveCrab@reddit
My luck must be truly terrible then to only ever have encountered that 1%
daneview@reddit
I know right, probably crossed paths with travellers 30-40 times in my life and weird how I only seem to meet that 1% as well
jordansrowles@reddit
Site by me was keeping modern day slaves
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Netwing
And then these lot around the corner that stabbed people
https://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/local-news/faces-five-men-found-guilty-33323448
I used to serve these guys, I was at their local mcdonalds
Fit-Mistake-4390@reddit
I don’t disagree with you but this text exchange clearly indicates that they are trying to extort the OP for money
daneview@reddit
I completely disagree with them.
Some are im sure, but 99%... the general pop wpuldnt get close to 99%, and i think we all know travellers well enough to say their criminality is higher than your standard community
christianjwaite@reddit
https://www.crimeandjustice.org.uk/criminalisation-travelling-community#:~:text=Despite%20only%20making%20up%20an,criminal%20justice%20and%20prison%20system.
This is a pro traveller statistic arguing that criminalisation of the traveller community is to blame. But there’s your answer, it’s 50 times higher. I’m not debating why that is, if we take this at face value it’s because they’re discriminated against by the establishment.
“Despite only making up an estimated 0.1 per cent of the UK population, 5 per cent of people in prison identify as RGT”
Level_Engineer@reddit
99%.... Ya
antch1102@reddit
You pay council tax for occupying a car park or someone else's land illegally? Well, the more you know...
AdSuccessful1544@reddit
99% my arse
LegitimatePowder@reddit
I think you've been misled. 99% are law abiding???? Sure.
bluejeansseltzer@reddit
What they mean is that the police and CPS haven’t bothered with successfully prosecuting those that are suspected of having committed crimes and thus are, in the eyes of the court system, until proven guilty, “law-abiding”.
LegitimatePowder@reddit
Spot on!
Codders94@reddit
I grew up with a fair number of travellers, and socialised with them and their extended families for years, nearly all of those I knew were up to something dodgy. To varying degrees.
Obviously that doesn’t represent the travelling community as a whole, it’s probably more representative of the company I used to keep.
Grandmas, mums and wives were mostly lovely. Husband and the boys used to get up to all sorts.
KeyJunket1175@reddit
Where do you get those statistics from? I have a very different experience with them and would love to be proven otherwise.
Roxygen1@reddit
I've read in Traveller Times, the magazine written by travellers, for travellers, that 61-81% of traveller women are victims of domestic violence.
So then it follows that 61-81% of traveller men are committing domestic violence, let alone any other crimes.
Forward_War_6624@reddit
99% ??? You’re taking the piss mate. SOME might pay tax but I’ve never met one who’s law abiding
shsusiisnsl@reddit
99%?
thebyrned@reddit
Oh and this 'friend' they know who happens to do tattoo removal. Trying to scam him out of £400. Pure scum
opopkl@reddit
That does seem cheap for tattoo removal.
Bloatville@reddit
Yes I noticed OP seems careful not to clarify that part.
Leoni_@reddit
As a traveller yes we wouldn’t waste time on the police, if this was my bairn I’d be straight round to spark you out myself. Inking a child is akin to molestation, where are the nooses now
Intelligent-Ad3515@reddit
Typical gypsys. Don’t know the full story yet going straight to violence.
Leoni_@reddit
Typical bigotry, never walked a mile in shoes but assume I’m violent. Mild mannered travellers … we exist
8bleach9@reddit
Your profile pic is akin to molestation, Christ almighty...
Fun-Check3638@reddit
Funny how they have got a 'friend' that can do it for cheap?
Scared_Cricket3265@reddit
Say you have sent the £400 put may take a couple of hours to go through. 😉
ThatBurningDog@reddit
As hilarious and satisfying it may be, you'd want to be careful of that being viewed as an admission of guilt. A statement like that could be deliberately misconstrued, especially in written text where sarcasm isn't obvious.
devandroid99@reddit
Knackers aren't taking anyone to court.
KillerHoggle@reddit
No need to use slurs.
MarlaDurden144@reddit
Yes, this would be funny, but don’t do this OP - because it may be taken as proof you intend to pay, if (however unlikely it may be) she takes you to small claims court.
It definitely sounds like a shakedown, I got my first tattoo on my 17th birthday, and whilst my parents were upset (dad way more than mum) neither of them threatened the tattoo parlour.
Any-Tomato-2915@reddit
Lol 😆
katiernd@reddit
Hilarious. Please do this OP
CrispyPotatoPuff@reddit
Every tattoo studio I've been to, requires me to sign a form and they check ID. Where is the form, with address, description and confirmation that an ID check was completed?
ChocolateSnowflake@reddit
OP definitely an unlicensed artist.
lazenbooby@reddit
This was my first thought, surely the bare minimum these days is a waiver declaring you're over 18 that gets signed AND an ID check from the artist.
Moist_Scheme8194@reddit
A friend of mine takes photocopies of IDs for this very reason. People are dicks.
ChocolateSnowflake@reddit
This is a scam but considering you haven’t checked ID or contact details, you didn’t take a deposit or confirm a way to take payment (credit card hold), have no CCTV and have made no mention of having insurance with legal cover, makes me think you’re an unlicensed tattoo artist.
Rich-Peak-3902@reddit
Not the main point, but for futher evidence against this series of events: a school would not be furious, a school would be concerned. It would be a safeguarding concern, and treated with seriously and calmly. Further, she wouldn't "have to have this removed before her school goes nuts", no school is going to insist the child have laser tattoo removal. The whole thing is just another part of the guilt-tripping story.
katiernd@reddit
I work in CS and guarantee school would've immediately made a referral to children's services to speak to mum about how a 16 year old managed to get a fake id and a tattoo. Where was mum in all this? Should've been keeping a closer eye on her
Inner-Pool7006@reddit
Keep close eye on a 16 year old is a ridiculous statement
BlackBikerchick@reddit
For a parent?
Badknees24@reddit
They can legally have sex at 16. They are more than capable of leaving the house for a day. What do you expect parents to do, follow them?
Jonn_Jonzz_Manhunter@reddit
No, but you have 16 years to teach your kids to make good, informed decisions before that point
So maybe just do that?
Killcycle1989@reddit
Easier said then done.
You can teach them all you want but once they become teenagers and socialise with others away from you, they'll want to do what their friends are doing.
EviWool@reddit
It is pretty difficult but parents are held legally responsible for their behaviour eg if they commit a theft
runrunrudolf@reddit
Not me with my legit parlour tattoo at 14 that my mum was happy for me to get reading this 👀 (yes it's crap and I regret it 2 decades later).
ChocolateSnowflake@reddit
I was 12 😅 I was crap and don’t regret it, it’s a hilarious story in hindsight.
fickle_tartan@reddit
I don't really regret mine, and my mum definitely was not happy for me to get it, but my school definitely didn't give a single fuck about my wrist tattoo I got at 15.
katiernd@reddit
Not a problem! If mum approved that's yours and hers decision. School may raise it to CS, but if mum has approved what can they do? It's only illegal if no parental consent (I believe? Don't quote me on that one)
JeffLynnesBeard@reddit
No, parental consent cannot be given for tattoos in the U.K. - the law is very clear that you actually have be 18 to be tattooed.
West-Season-2713@reddit
Yep. Piercings are a matter of individual studio policy though, aside from intimate piercings, I believe.
RYSEofCthulhu@reddit
I guess our schools were just bad 😅
BrightEyeCameDown@reddit
And/or dad
shebasmum49@reddit
"A family friend" is going to do the laser removal at a reduced price. Hmmm, I call BS
katiernd@reddit
I mean obviously, but in this story we only know mum is involved and no mention of dad, hence why I referred to mum in this instance
EFTRSx1@reddit
Doubt it.
I was 16 when I managed to get my first tattoo in a tattoo parlour, the school did absolutely fuck all when they found out.
I also find it annoying how people always blame the parents. Parents can only do so much. For instance my mother had no idea until after it had happened, as far as she was concerned I was studying for exams with friends, which was a regular occurence, and she had no implication to indicate otherwise.
BlackBikerchick@reddit
Mind you it's obviously she's had multiple tats.
Squirrel_Worth@reddit
This. The school have some concerns with appearance but more with safeguarding. There was a child at my school who got a tattoo abroad but mum was happy with it so not a lot they could do.
Velveteen_Rabbit1986@reddit
I used to work in social care many moons ago and a 12 year old boy got tattooed by someone in a very visible place, and his mum could not get anybody to remove it until he was 18. Whether that's still the case I'm not sure. I suppose the difficulty OP has is there is no cctv of him checking the ID so if it came down to a police investigation it could be "he said she said".
Nandor1262@reddit
Depends on the school. Some schools have policies on paticular haircut let alone tattoos. That said in this case I think you’re spot on.
Seafood_udon9021@reddit
If the tattoo is on the girl’s stomach, the school wouldn’t ever see it
Rich-Peak-3902@reddit
P.E. would be the go-to; staff are trained to notice unusual marks and report them.
soap_bag@reddit
Yeah like the good old days when the teacher stood there and made sure we all got in the shower. If you tried to avoid it you got detention where you had to shower for an hour. Not sure if that was an idle threat.
oldharmony@reddit
We had to open our towels in front of her to show we didn’t have our under wear on as we got it don’t to a fine art of just wetting shoulders and legs. She got onto it and this is what we had to do. Ohhh the good ole days!!! Imagine that nowadays!!? Teacher would probs go to prison!
pervertsage@reddit
Our PE teacher was more interested in making sure we were wearing briefs instead of boxers with a visual check, FFS. That was the late 90s.
"You need the support, lad"
LaurenNotABot@reddit
Bullshit . They don’t watch the kids get changed
Squirrel_Worth@reddit
My PE teacher was never in the changing rooms, would occasionally open the door and tell us to hurry up if we were talking, I always got changed in the back section by the showers so wasn’t visible to the door, so can guarantee no teacher ever saw my body under a polo or trousers.
crispy-flavin-bites@reddit
The stomach tattoo is the previous one done by her friend
Rich-Peak-3902@reddit
I'm not saying the school won't disapprove (they absolutely will), I'm saying they won't force a child to undergo a medical procedure to conform to their policy.
EviWool@reddit
They will probably insists she covers it for school
jolittletime@reddit
School would not even know about a stomach tattoo unless she was flashing it around. Do you keep records of IDs? Like a photocopy or anything? As if not, you should start!
riverend180@reddit
Is this allowed? Seems a massive data breach risk.
Locksmithbloke@reddit
The Data Protection Act has been law for at least a decade now. Anyone running a tattoo studio should know this! They should be taking photocopies of ID with some details blanked, probably, and signed by the person who checked the DoB etc. (Not a lawyer, nor a tattoo artist)
crispy-flavin-bites@reddit
The stomach tattoo is the previous one done by her friend
Bloatville@reddit
Especially for a stomach tattoo 🙄
It's not even visible unless they've got them in a very odd uniform.
GainsAndPastries@reddit
100%, this screams scam
HintOfMalice@reddit
I can totally imagine a school going nuts. I don't really understand where this certainty that they would be chiefly concerned comes from. Its certainly a nice thought, but it's quite contrasting with how I remember my school from little over 5 years ago.
BeneficialEvening559@reddit
Here’s a clean message you can send him—straightforward, no panic, just what to do:
Action plan bro: 1. Do NOT send any money This looks like pressure for cash. Paying won’t end it, it’ll just make them come back for more. 2. Save everything right now Screenshots of all messages, their number/profile, booking chats, and anything about the ID. Don’t lose anything. 3. Write down what happened While it’s fresh—what the ID looked like, what she said, time/date, how she acted. This helps if anything ever comes up. 4. Send one message (optional), then stop replying Something like:
After that, no more replies.
Log it with Action Fraud or local police. It covers you and shows you’re not hiding anything. 6. Don’t stress about threats If they were serious, they’d go straight to police—not ask for £800 on WhatsApp. “Pay or I report you” is basically Blackmail. 7. Only take it seriously if it becomes official Police contact or a proper legal letter = deal with it then. Until that, it’s just pressure
TopAngle7630@reddit
I assume you check ID? In which case you haven't done anything wrong. Tell her where to go. I would suggest in future, keep records of ID, so if this happens again you have nothing to fear from just taking this to the police. I would suggest a visit to r/legaladviceuk
MidnightMost8041@reddit
Hi OP, I think I can help you out here. I run an established supplier of tattoo removal equipment based in Nigeria. Please send me £50 by western union tonight and I will send you all the equipment required to remedy the troublesome situation you find yourself in. Kind regards
😉
According-Celery-318@reddit
Sounds very much like you are straight up being conned out of £400 by the Mum and daughter. Her 'friend' has a laser tattoo removal laser machine - how convenient!
If you never received payment there's no record of you doing the work, so maybe you could just claim 'what tattoo'?!
FakeNordicAlien@reddit
You can either take a chance and ignore it, and hope they’re bluffing, or you can get advice from a solicitor. I would suggest the latter. Take one of those free consultations if you need, it’s probably better than nothing.
I would also suggest doing a bit more research into running your business safely. You don’t seem to have a reliable way of taking payment that prevents you from getting scammed, you don’t have CCTV that would help keep both you and your clients safer, and you haven’t said whether you actually checked her ID or not, only that you don’t have CCTV of you doing it. One way or another, these things are going to come and bite you in the ass. It may or may not be today, with this client, but it will happen.
vinyljunkie1245@reddit
I would have thought there would be some kind of record of the id taken along with usual business records like customer's names and addresses, just to protect the in case of things like this or if the business is inspected.
Weliveinadictatoship@reddit
I had to go through more checks to get a piercing that you only needed to be 16 for than this, I'd fully expect a legit tattoo shop to want a scan of my ID and a data protection page in whatever i sign
phatboi23@reddit
yup, they're asking for so much shit.
tattooists i know have a deposit before, payment on the day.
they have paperwork and copies to show they have ID.
also CCTV is standard and cheap.
doesn't (probably shouldn't due to some tattoo placements lol) need to be covering where people are getting tattooed but definitely where customers are and you do ID checks etc.
BastardsCryinInnit@reddit
So. Much. This.
space_absurdity@reddit
They are trying it on. Ignore it. Any parent that was truly concerned would be going straight to the authorities/legal route to get an enforcable outcome. Them immediately offering to go halves on 'laser' is a cheap way to get you to part with cash.
Ignore.
grafeisen203@reddit
Because doing so in the UK imposes a significant burden of GDPR compliance which is unfeasible for many small businesses.
RayaQueen@reddit
Agreed EXCEPT.. GDPR relates only to digital records. A paper photocopy would not be covered.
£50-100 for a nice little printer. Photocopy every ID. Keep in a filling cabinet.
...
And yes OP, this has got scam written all over it.
GettingTherapissed@reddit
GDPR absolutely applies to paper files - they need to be kept in a locked container. The law is very clear on that.
RayaQueen@reddit
I mean I think that's what I said. But it seems pretty clear from all the comments that either I've somewhat misinterpreted or something changed.
To answer why do I think this.. I got that info from a gdpr training. But it was a long time ago possibly even before the live date of the law. But it was definitely being trained that way specifically.
But I'm glad I said it now because that's very useful information!
TedBaendy@reddit
Doesn't apply to paper records? That's... where did you even get that info?
oktimeforplanz@reddit
I would love to know why you think GDPR doesn't apply to paper-based information.
Kamikaze-X@reddit
Photocopiers take digital copies regardless.
mankytoes@reddit
I love the misplaced confidence here.
KarenFromAccounts@reddit
GDPR absolutely does apply to paper records
BellendicusMax@reddit
GDPR applies to paper documents.
romoladesloups@reddit
I thought it was a legal requirement to keep a record of age checks?
Bugsmoke@reddit
They’re asking for £400 because they just so happen to have a family friend who can remove it for £800. Clear às day that they’re trying it on.
No_Height_2408@reddit
Even if you paid the £400 they would obviously be coming back to blackmail some more.
Diplomatic_Gunboats@reddit
The consequences of not being able to prove you checked their age include ending up convicted of a crime and whatever punishments results from that.
The 'burden' of GDPR compliance is minimal for Tattooists. Take a digital picture of ID that matches the age on the consent form - which includes how their data will be kept and for how long etc, store both as long as necessary (probably at most 3 years). Delete after that date.
At the moment OP has a form with a (potentially) fake age and no way of proving they did any age verification (if they even did any) and would be crucified. They need to speak to a solicitor whose advice would likely be, do not respond, report to the police, accept that if it turns out she is under 16, they also may face charges.
grafeisen203@reddit
They also have to have processes in place to respond to deletion requests, they have a burden of proof that records retained are necessary for operation, they have to be stored securely and they are responsible for preventing unauthorized access to hardware they are stored on.
Hedgehogosaur@reddit
Save digital copy on computer. Computer has password protection. Image saved with date in title. Delete after 3 years.
St2Crank@reddit
Which all apply to their current client details that they’ve stored anyway.
Diplomatic_Gunboats@reddit
Which are, frankly, trivial. These are solved problems.
OSUBrit@reddit
It really doesn’t. People love scaremongering over it. Partly because there are whole cottage industries set up to bleed small businesses dry for data protection compliance services which are hugely expensive and overblown.
bababoobiedodo@reddit
Wouldn't it just need to be stored under lock and key then shredded once the relevant time has passed?
Feersum_endjjinn@reddit
100% scam. Completely ignore these messages. "Family friend who will do it cheap'" lol. As for the future anyone comes in your shop you think are travellers dont have anything to do with them. Just say you make all bookings via emails and sort out the designs there, and say youre booked up for ages. Nothing but trouble they are.
Jar770@reddit
You're being scammed.
Houseoflevi12@reddit
Scamming travellers I know a mate who can remove it but you need to pay half lemme guess and a free tattoo 😂😂
Robertinho678@reddit
They're definitely trying to scam you. Ignore them, do not engage, and see if you can put measures in place to be better protected legally in cases like these.
NecronomiconUK@reddit
Clearly a scam but owing to the fact that it seems you didn't take a record of ID, you have no CCTV and you don't have any proper payment system you've definitely been targeted by people who know what they're doing because you're so venerable.
You either ignore or report it to the police, only viable options. It'll be their word against yours.
AlwaysPlantin@reddit
Tell them when you receive payment for the tattoo in the first place you'll consider it. Not a chance they're going to the police lol
StrongAlarm7772@reddit
Call the bluff, it's so easy for literally anybody who knows about the tattoo to send a text like that.
If you send back a diplomatic response inviting them to come in together to discuss the issue then you might quickly get a sense of what's really happening.
sd-rw@reddit
Surely this is for r/legaladviceuk
BeneficialEvening559@reddit
Sounds like extortion to me, if the CCTV doesn’t work at all just let it go to court and say she gave you a fake ID, they can’t act against ‘he said, she said’ if it is an extortion attempt it’ll never see a courtroom as they know they’re wrong.
Purple_Wedding_3929@reddit
Sounds like they could be trying to scam you?
Able_Wishbone_4138@reddit
If OP didn’t check ID then they have broken the law. I’m suspect they didn’t and have worded OP to not incriminate themselves. The mother is calling out you didn’t check. If they did and took evidence then nothing to worry about.
Which is it OP?
JohnLef@reddit
My friend will remove it for £800. Haha. Tell them the foxtrot oscar.
RHMoaner@reddit
How convenient they’ve a family friend who does tattoo removals at mates rates.
aquapuppy@reddit
It’s just the girl pretending to be her parent
Angelf1shing@reddit
Sounds like a scam, but if you have a record (don’t have to be cctv but you surely have records) of her showing appropriate ID then you can ignore her attempt at blackmail or report it to the police yourself.
Acrobatic_Suit8546@reddit
They are trying to rinse you of 400quid
ashleyjc@reddit
My tattoo studio photocopied my ID (with my consent).
boldstrategy@reddit
Main question, why in this planet did you do the work without payment?
Alexboogeloo@reddit
If she didn’t pay, it didn’t happen
bubblyweb6465@reddit
I’d call her bluff , say you have cctv and the Id seemed genuine and the fact she already had tattoos you concluded no risk , say you’ll be reporting it to police and submitting the cctv footage of you checking the fake ID say that - your aware carrying a fake ID is also a crime …. Travellers trying it on hard for a mere £400
Learning-EFWH8045@reddit
They are trying to scam you. You weren't paid now they are trying to fleece you for £400. I would get advice from the police department that deals with scams.
EgoCity@reddit
The fact she already has a tattoo could probably work in your favour. I would contact the police and say she had an ID and a tattoo already. So any sane person wouldn’t assume she was lying.
If she has a fake ID that’s on her, also the child services may get involved and get on her parents ass which tbh it’s clear they need to be reported.
Cover your ass, if you report it at least you are acting concerned and making the first move, paying her anything would be admitting guilt
RelativelyRidiculous@reddit
Smells like a scam to me.
Muted_Astronomer8183@reddit
Tell her you do laser and are happy to do it all in one go. They’ll soon forget it. They’ve scammed you out if a free tattoo now want to scam you out of £400
caeseron@reddit

Bloatville@reddit

spiderham42@reddit

KittyHalfEyes@reddit
I thought this is a serious shit.
Then i saw “family friend” 🤣😂🤣🤣
Bethzeb2@reddit (OP)

mimic@reddit
Invite them to both return so you can discuss it and then when they show up call the filth and have them arrested for non-payment. Obviously this is a scam to get out of paying you.
fuckaracist@reddit
They're trying to scam you. There is no laser removal friend.
jimbobsqrpants@reddit
Don't your friends have lasers for removing tattoos?
neilmac1210@reddit
My pet shark does.
MidgarDreaming@reddit
It's common scam tactics to say "my mate will do it for £££" let's go halves and you transfer me the money today.
Tell them to jog on and that you won't entertain conversation any further.
ames_lwr@reddit
Did you check their ID or not?
KittyHalfEyes@reddit
I thinks its a scam.
You can take letters from other customers that you check ID. And you can use that as proof you check id,
mariah_a@reddit
They mean it’s probable that you’re getting conned.
Get a tattoo, then intimidate the artist into sending them a bunch of money for a fake “removal” (no quote or invoice I’m sure because it’s a “friend of a friend”) through these nebulous threats. Voila, free tattoo + profit.
Sheeverton@reddit
Basically you were naïve enough to let them go without paying so now they are trying to extract another £400 from you because they think they might.
BastardsCryinInnit@reddit
So this is extortion.
If you don't feel comfortable just ignoring it (i.e they might come to your shop and cause aggro), then report it to the police now, you can do it online.
Start that papertrail now.
romoladesloups@reddit
I recommend this if, and only if, they checked the id and kept a record
Darwen85@reddit
Reply that you have taken the matter to the police as it is very serious and that a full investigation must be done to make sure nothing like this ever happens again.
Obviously you won't have but it takes away their threat and if they are travellers they won't want police within a million miles of them so will drop it and walk away.
Greggs-the-bakers@reddit
Ironic though considering the police probably wouldn't even do anything.
EviWool@reddit
Betcha mum is trying to shake you down. And I would bet that she has done it before.
Ex_astris-scientia@reddit
There are a lot of comments but I’d ask for proof she was under 18, as the ones I’ve read suggest they’re “trying it all on” seem most likely.
Mumlife8628@reddit
Sounds scammy, id invest in cctv over your counter, it's un usual not to
Butttt since there's no financial trace you did the tattoo I'd just deny it lol
Grantthetick@reddit
It's obviously a scam mate. But also how do you tattoo a traveller without payment up front. Ignore the message and get on with your life.
Remote-Pool7787@reddit
Ignore it, block it- it’s a scam. There’s an app they use that makes it look like they’ve gone a transfer but the money never lands in your account
batteryforlife@reddit
This. No payment = no proof they got the tattoo from you. Block and ignore.
Bibb5ter@reddit
Why would you do a tattoo without payment first? Or let them leave without confirmation of payment?
GeekHabits@reddit
You show them the consent form and the copy of her ID you asked for before you did her tattoo.
Chickenkorma666@reddit
Tell her you sent the money (don't actually send money) but that it takes 2 days to clear
No_Height_2408@reddit

helpmaboabjings@reddit

snotglitter@reddit
'it's in their nature' is a wild statement to make about a whole ethnic group
breathboi@reddit
Brits love to claim that we're more enlightened than those racist Americans right up until there's a vague mention of travellers/Roma
Vic_Serotonin@reddit
Why can't we just, sometimes, call a spade a spade when it's fucking spade without bullshit like this?
Greggs-the-bakers@reddit
Yeah, But the fact that everyone i know either has had negative interactions with them, or know someone who has kinda makes the stereotype at least a little true. It's well known that most of the time when they appear in an area, burglaries increase and they nick everything that isn't nailed down, they then leave a mess and piss off to the next place to repeat it.
People hate them because it's justified in a lot of cases. Sure not all of them are like that but enough of them are.
Ricemandem@reddit
Tough one really. There's obviously some pretty horrible prejudice against travellers. However, both of the two interactions I have had with them have involved them stealing my property 😅
helpmaboabjings@reddit
Well...it's up to them to break the stigma and actually behave
Kitchen-Customer4370@reddit

Most likely a scam however by not checking ID you’re asking for a problem and is very poor business practice and you’re liable for a fine up to £1000. It can also have repercussions on your business if you’re legitimate and not a Facebook tattoo artist

Bretthart82@reddit

KarlArmstrong9221@reddit
Probably puts the kid up to it in the hole of rinsing someone out of £400. Tell them to do F off and be better parents.
FloofyRaptor@reddit
They are scammers, ignore them.
If by some tiny chance they do report it, they never paid, so committed theft and showed a fake ID.
There's absolutely nothing to do unless someone actually official contacts you, they are trying to trick you into sending them money in a panic. And of course they magically know some who can do it for "cheap".
The school isn't going to force anyone to have laser tattoo removal, and it takes several sessions so she's going to be "out of school" for a while.
Probably the best thing to do is get CCTV at the front of the store so you have cover, and on the forms have a space just to write what type of id was checked if you don't already. And whatever method they claimed they were going to pay you with, don't accept that in the future.
boredmoonface@reddit
She scammed you once already and now she’s trying to scam you again.
FireWhiskey5000@reddit
For this specific situation either take legal advice or ignore it. It sounds dodgy AF. No school is going to go nuts because a 16yr old has a tattoo (they’re not going to ignore it but they’re not going to fly off the handle at the parents) and the fact their “mate” does tattoo removal sounds very dodgy.
That all being said I would take this as a learning experience. No offence but it sounds like your business is a bit dodgy yourself. You don’t appear to have a safe and reliable method for people to take money, CCTV (for you and your clients safety) seems a bit lax and it’s not clear if you actually did check their ID or not (you will know the tattoo legalities better than I, but I would assume some level of “Think 25” scheme would be in place”). You might just want to use this as an opportunity to make some improvements to keep yourself and your clients comfortable and safe.
Agitated-Honeydew-41@reddit
Ignore it, but keep your shop lights on and CCTV in clear operation outside in case your window gets smashed in!
Ivan_Dobsky_MD@reddit
If you did check the ID, then report this to the police. They’re trying to blackmail you.
TheNinjaPixie@reddit
Post in legaluk or maybe tell her you will be contacting the police yourself to get the facts and to report the blackmail.
JeffSergeant@reddit
Even if they didn't check the ID its still blackmail
Ivan_Dobsky_MD@reddit

LaurenNotABot@reddit
Missing the point but how would her school have seen her stomach?
This whole thing makes no sense
Legomatica69@reddit
Sorry to be blunt, but do you normally allow clients to leave without paying? Essentially that is what happened, and you have been 'stolen' from. The 'family friend' story is likely a convenient cover up to take advantage of you again.
That being said, be careful how you respond. If your customer is a traveller, they likely have the backing and endless support of a large like minded community built on trust and respect. Which is usually an admirable thing, but I wouldnt like to be on the wrong side of the travellers I know 😬
-Rhymenocerous-@reddit
Do not respond to this person, other than "my legal representation will be in touch with you shortly"
Get legal representation. Everything you say to this person from this point on will be used / twisted against you.
There are safegaurding concerns here as the client is <18yrs. Dont engage and get someone who can help you properly.
That text from the mother is quite damning for her defence.
gbrittonphotography@reddit
People in this comment section need to learn not to let the 99% of bad travellers ruin it for the 1% who mean well.
MattyLePew@reddit
Did you check ID though?
It’s a huge detail that you seem to avoid answering. Checking ID in your industry is a must (I’m sure I don’t have to say this).
If you genuinely didn’t check ID, I’d suggest you evaluate whether or not you would rather pay money to make it disappear, or if you’d argue your case.
Either way, I’d also be asking them to send ID of the tattooed customer to validate their story and verify that the customer is under age.
The fact that they haven’t paid you (I’d argue) is irrelevant when it comes to the complaint being made.
phatboi23@reddit
yup, this is what screams sketchy from the start.
also no CCTV in a tattoo shop? really?!
N9242Oh@reddit

phatboi23@reddit
yeah, i have a feeling they're not actually a proper tattooist, or at LEAST know they didn't check ID.
MattyLePew@reddit
There are so many reasons to have CCTV in any kind of a publicly used areas, especially things where you’re interacting with people so closely.
Seems wild to me and I agree, sketchy af.
phatboi23@reddit
yup, it's so cheap to do a basic CCTV setup.
hell 2 places in my town i helped fit their CCTV as they wanted to be sure of placement and not buying crap.

actuallyanangel@reddit
Regardless of the fact this sounds scammy (which it does), you need to change whatever set up you've got going on dude.

Dinomumma420101113@reddit
If there’s no evidence of her in your premises who is to prove that you did the tattoo? Ask for an invoice from the mother of the “friend of a family”…. Sounds like they are trying to scam you

boltropewildcat@reddit

PuzzleheadedAside781@reddit
GDPR applies to all data, not just data held electronically.
AndromedaSwalen@reddit
Ex-tattooist here. Whether you asked to see ID or not (in case you didn't, make sure you always do going ahead. I used to photocopy it and attach it to the part of the form I kept for my reference, had to be passport or driving licence, no bus cards, student uni cards etc, only legal gov photo ID) the burden of proof may be on her to prove you didn't otherwise it is your word against hers on that.
But, the whole "I know a friend" is always a red flag. Oh don't they always just know a person? 😂 It reads very scammy particularly if you did not receive payment in the first place and she already had other tattoos that you have no idea if they were done by a different artist or a friend. Our piercer used to do aesthetics too, botox and filler. One time, some travellers came in, one wanted botox then later claimed she got a massive infection. Piercer was obviously mortified and asked her to come in to see her because "weirdly" they refused to seek any direct medical help and just insisted a full refund. They came in, big oversized sunglasses, when piercer asked to see the damage so she could advise if it was just inflamed or to tell her to see a doctor, she very quickly dropped the glasses then raised them again and there was nothing there. No inflammation, no infection. Turned out this pair were doing the rounds, getting free cosmetic work done then demanding a refund and additional compensation so as to not "take it further". Some people are chancers and sounds like you just met some of them. Might even be that the mother in this situation is just the lass you tattooed.
Ask them to come to the shop to talk it over. Tell them you are securing legal advice and may need to get the police involved. Gauge the reaction. As a mother though, if my son was tattooed underaged, I would go direct to the shop and speak to the artist face to face. There's something about having that anonymity of hiding behind a faceless text that sort of flags this as even more scammy.
_bitch_puddin@reddit
Just curious - you dont take a photo copy of IDs? Any tattoo or piercing I've gotten they took my ID made a copy
DangerousDisplay7664@reddit

I presume you have liability coverage with business insurance.
If it was me I would give them a ring and discuss. Including how can I avoid things getting to this stage in future.
The other thing is I suspect they have history locally so I would quietly ask the surrounding tattoo shops if they have issues with similar being vague(ish).
You could also call her bluff and ring the local school and ask some questions.
seriousrikk@reddit
No payment received? No CCTV…
“No, sorry, don’t know what you are talking about. I didn’t tattoo this individual. “
cutepsycho1704@reddit

pickledperceptions@reddit
If they signed a consent form they should include their DOB. You should also countersign saying you checked ID. And dated. If you actually did that and it didn't appear fake as fuck then you have the paperwork to prove that you've not faulted.
Also do they have any deposit logged or payment recieved? If your at all concerned this is real. You can ask them to come in, pay for the tattoo itself so they can proove their transaction and then explain what paperwork you habe showingnits not your fault
Jamesp1233@reddit

Id speak with my business insurer.
You do have business insurance I assume?
MMSTINGRAY@reddit
The fact you weren't paid means I'd treat this as a scam. Like "I got a free tattoo off this mug, what else can I get". You pay and they might still blackmail you and, I'm not a lawyer, but I think that you agreeing to pay for damages could be used to suggest some admission of guilt. If she did show you ID then you know you did nothing wrong and know that she is either over 18 or had a fake ID, in which case what else could you have done. If you didn't...well you know you should have and chalk this a lesson. It is illegal to tattoo anyone under 18. Always check ID.
Basically I feel like you're either already going to be reported no matter what you do or they are just trying to get money out of you.
When you say there is no CCTV of you check her ID do you mean you didn't and the CCTV shows you didn't? Or do you mean there is no evidence either way, in which case it's your word vs theirs if it even went as far as court.
Try asking in r/LegalAdviceUK

In the immediate term:

In the broader sense, stop running your own business. You potentially tattooed a child, have no way to verify you checked ID and believed a very obvious lie to not get payment. Was Pastoral deputy headteacher for 30 years. The school part is bs. Most we'd do is raise a safeguarding concern with social services. I had a lad rock up with a neck tattoo and we made him wear a large plaster covering it, not insist he had it lazered off. I too think it's a scam.
