What should I do for my DOT physical

Posted by wydreum@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 20 comments

I actually make more money doing drop and hook no touch than flatbed or food service. Made total of $11k + $6k for a month

Fuuuuck no. I know some people can team up with strangers, but I’m definitely not one of them. You’re right though, there are husband wife teams out there that kill it.

Agh yeah man I had a similar thing with a suspension on my record, got a speeding ticket one state away from my home state, paid the ticket, that somehow didn’t get communicated to my home state and my license got suspended. Didn’t even know for months, my girlfriend at the time found out about it looking something unrelated up for me. Long story short, after tons and tons of calls and other bullshit, my home state reversed the suspension but it STILL SHOWS ON MY RECORD. And there is fuck all I can do about it. It got in the way of me moving onto a couple companies before the one I found now. Talk about bullshit.

Ah that’s a pain. Yeah after 3 years most things don’t matter from what I’ve noticed (unless it’s something crazy big). It sucks because we’re all at the mercy of the insurance companies. You could be the best driver in the world, but if there’s something on your record that insurance companies get hung up on, most companies don’t want to bother.

That’s great, man. Sorry for my pessimism, I didn’t know your gig was that rough, and I probably shouldn’t have assumed. JB Hunt will most definitely be better than what you have going on now, but I hope you don’t fall into a trap of thinking they’re incredible since your first job was so bad. I’ve learned that there’s always room to shoot for better until you find yourself in a spot you’re truly comfortable in. I can tell you from my experience, cuz I’m still new in the big picture (a little over a year), it DOES get much, much better. I’m just a year in and am doing way better for myself than I was doing before I got my CDL. If I could suggest one thing — protect your driving record like it’s a precious baby or something. Not saying you should be all super paranoid and shit while driving, but just be vigilant about doing the speed limit, following road signs, etc. The cleaner you keep your record (in your personal vehicle, too), the easier it is to land better gigs. Less bullshit you have to worry about later. Once you hit a year, if you want, PM me and I can get you a referral to Crete. They start at .64, .67 for reefer. LTL gigs, like Saia and XPO, can be very, very lucrative — especially Saia. I talk to those guys at the gas station near here frequently and they make bank, love their jobs. You’re gonna do well, man. You seem to have a good attitude about just taking all the bullshit on the chin and powering forward til you get where you need to be.

And like others have said, it does get better. I know it was already mentioned but a lot of these newbie friendly companies build their business model around taking care of newbies. But dude, if you’re getting paid 500 or so net going 6-700 miles a day, that’s criminal. I made double that doing half that driving at Schneider, Target dedicated account.

I feel you man. You don’t have to dox yourself and say who it is, but that company is fucked. If you’re still FRESH fresh and want to get your experience elsewhere, there are some starters that aren’t bad at all. SWIFT and Schneider get made fun of quite a bit but they are easy rides for the first year. Man, as soon as you get six months, go on truckersreport and enter your information in the section where it says they can help with jobs. Your phone will be ringing off the hook, it’s kind of insane. I did it a couple months ago and immediately found something better. Just remember, every company of every variety will hit you up, so just do your due diligence and research before moving on.

Jesus Christ man, there are so many posts like this here. It’s not that fucking bad, man. I’m sorry, but I have no idea what kind of work you were doing before trucking that makes this so miserable for you, but if that’s the case, try something else. It’s so dramatic and absurd. Grow a pair and advocate for yourself if you feel you’re being taken advantage of. It really seems like a lot of new drivers caught wind of this six-figures-for-doing-damn-near-nothing dream and when any sort of bullshit pops up at work, as it does with any job, it’s theatrics and “tell me it’s gonna be okay” posts. You’re gonna be fine, man. If you don’t like trucking, if you’re that miserable, find something else. Nothing against you personally, but seeing this time and time again is pretty annoying, man. Idk, getting my CDL changed my life dramatically for the better, but then again I’ve worked shit jobs for shit pay for shit bosses because it’s what I had to do at the time. This, in comparison, is a fucking dream.

Man, go to Schneider. Folks in this sub like to shit on them, but I started with them and wouldn’t change a thing. Pay could be better, but in my opinion what’s important in the beginning is experience. If you get on a dedicated account, you’re golden. I was treated very well.

With all the ways you can lose your CDL how do you protect yourself when off duty?

I’m on day two of quitting. Us being drivers is more of a reason to quit, just sitting and smoking all day is fucked for our health. I’ll be your accountability partner if you want.

Good GOD this comment section is a fucking circus. First of all, you did nothing wrong here. You saw something that bothered you, you did what you could, and you asked for advice. I personally believe that you may be reading into it a bit much, but that’s just me. Your responses to the comments have been civil and mature, and I commend you for that. Good job. If it does really get under your skin after having discussed it, give TAT a call and let them know what you see — maybe they know something about it. Who knows! I am not pro MAGA, nor am I pro anything in our current political landscape. If you think the state of things today is boiled down to simply “MAGA did it,” then you’re delusional and need to grow up. After reading the comments, the only unnecessary hostility I see is from a few individuals strawmanning a MAGA culprit based on absolutely no evidence and getting angry about it. You guys need to talk to somebody before you have a heart attack, jesus. Anyway, have a good day, drivers. Please be nice to each other for Christ’s sake.

I could use some advice.

You know, that’s not the first time I’ve read something about their equipment. I’m completely naive to pneumatic tankers as well so although I’m not so stupid that I don’t know when something looks flat out dangerous, I’m not educated in them enough to know when something more nuanced isn’t right. Your last point is why I think I’m gonna give it a shot and see how it goes. It wouldn’t be the end of the world — if it sucks, I’ll find something else.

This is a poor argument. You’re essentially saying that it’s not fair as a truck driver to be critical of people spreading garbage and making a mess somewhere because truckers are known to be nasty themselves, which doesn’t make sense.

Help how bad???

My first year with a CDL. How’s it looking? I’m home weekends and 1 to 2 ten hour resets at home throughout the week. Oh I still have 2 pay weeks left.
