Dispatch for my company is idiots

To an extent. A few years ago when I bought a reefer trailer, I leased on with a small company out of Green Bay that has contract Freight going back and forth to pennsylvania. When I get tired of dealing with brokers, I jump on one of those accounts for a few months. If you go out and buy a trailer and get your own authority, however, it is extremely difficult to get direct contracts. Very few businesses want to deal with a single truck and trailer. The vast majority of them would rather use Brokers to book a couple dozen loads per day than deal with a couple dozen different carriers. Then there are the companies that want a trailer pool on their contracts. If you go owner op, maybe hit up Landstar for your first 6 months to learn how the game works, and learn the lanes, then look for a smaller company that will let you self dispatch from DAT, or run their contract freight. Landstar is an owner operator training company, no different than going with Werner for company driving. You don't want to stay with them any longer than you need to, but just like company driving you need some experience as owner op before the better companies will look at you, even leasing on your own equipment.
