Jellied eels, parsley sauce, pie, mash?

I’m an avid fish lover and tried it when I lived in London. The mash and the liquor were lovely, the eel was the worst fish I have ever tasted, greasy in a bad way, dense, tough and an odd earthy taste. Can not recommend it. But if eel is your thang, you may love it!

What is the most affordable & nice city to live in UK?

I buy rundown, unloved houses (often at auction) and renovate them, one at a time then put them back on the market, making a small profit. It’s adding to housing for people who can afford a move-in ready property but might struggle to buy a fixer-upper and then the £50k it takes to renovate it. I’m really not the enemy here, just a semi-retired ex salesman who wanted to spend less time in Travelodges and more time at home!

I’m a property developer in York and £400k would buy you a lovely house - a 2/3 bed off Bishy Road. 3 bed in Holgate/ Huntington and trad York semis in most areas; modern detached on Clifton Moor. I bought a 3 bed Victorian terrace off Burton Stone Lane for less than £200k last year which just needs a refresh. They are there if you look for them.

Have recently rediscovered Sunday Roasts with my partner, who is a meat eater, I am a vegetarian. There is something lovely about all the prep and variety of the meal and the veggie element can be a big treat too, lots of parcels/ wellingtons/ meat substitutes to play with. Typically roast mini potatoes/ carrots and parsnips, spiced red cabbage or pan fried hispi cabbage, peas and red wine & onion gravy. We lead very different lives and this is a little oasis in the week, just the two of us in front of a decent film. Happy to have it in our lives again!

Saint-Félicien - a double cream soft cheese. Was available in Tesco but never seems to be there now. Once tasted, never forgotten! Honourable mention : Gjetost, a toffee like Norwegian cheese with earthy, goaty, tangy undertones delivered in a sweet caramel coloured cheese. Hard to find (Waitrose stock it) and best eaten in wafer thin slivers or ribbons.

Is saying 'in the night' common in the UK (as opposed to 'at night')? A language question.

Both are used - at night would describe something continuous ‘I watch TV at night’ ‘I work at night’ where in the night is an event ‘the phone rang in the night’ ‘I heard a noise in the night’

Come to Eboracum, York. There is a coin shop on the corner of one of our most famous streets, The Shambles (often said to be the inspiration for Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley). He has an online shop, Paul Dawson but not sure what is on there. In his physical store you can buy anything from arrowheads and Egyptian tomb treasures to fossils to coins from BC onwards and I think they are authenticated.

Unless, as I outlined earlier, travel insurance costs are too prohibitive as it was for my elderly but fit Mum who wants to see her grandkids, it’s a calculated risk visiting France (where she used to live) and which has a better healthcare system than the UK!

Agreed, it’s nowhere near as comprehensive and doesn’t cover everything but it’s a good addition for free. It has enabled me to have a holiday with my Mum who had cancer ten years ago, it T2 diabetic, has hypertension etc… all reasonable enough given her age but the travel insurance she was offered was £1200 for a week for a woman who was fit as a fiddl!

People travelling in the EU don’t realise there is still a reciprocal healthcare agreement despite Brexit - just get a GHIC card through NHS website and there is the same level of care as here. Doesn’t work in the states though, you’d need private insurance for that.

If people knew the half of it, they wouldn’t darken the doors of the tracks again. The slogan ‘You bet; they die’ sums it up nicely. Same goes for horse racing with jumps; it’s mad the support for the Grand National and similar where animals die or are shot due to injury, every year. Any defenders should be asked if they would enter a pet (or themselves) a race where there is more than a 1 in 50 chance of dying.

Do what you need to do to protect your current mental health and your future happiness. Maybe get a feel from colleagues/ line manager how likely your particular role will be to be lost, generally you can get a steer if it is slimming down or everyone out. From a practical view, homelessness is the biggest threat and the rental market is brutal so it would pay to get a new flat while you can still prove income and then figure it out from there. Although your landlord has given you notice, you can still give him your shorter one month’s notice if you find somewhere else quicker, potentially moving in the quiet end Dec/ early Jan period. I’ve gone through a similar shitstorm, actually also separating from partner too, it will work out, just take deep breaths and make lists!

Stand up comedy club in London in the noughties, hosted by an incredibly unfunny guy who always used the same warm up material, including the line ‘switch your mobile off as it’s not very funny having your text messages read out on stage’. Someone at the back shouted that it wasn’t funny last week, or the week before or the week before that. Host had a complete meltdown and was screaming for the lights to go up and for the heckler to be identified. Venue didn’t comply so he went into a 5 minute rant about how difficult his job was, how he wasn’t appreciated, you try putting it together and was visibly near to tears. Audience was mortified, nobody knew where to look. Eventually he stormed off and the first act introduced themselves, he had regained composure by the interval.

The lady was absolutely charming and let me and made me a cuppa, showed me the house and we talked about the street and the area. She had been there 30 years herself and had her own, now grown-up, family there. The whole encounter was a delight, I’m glad she trusted me on instinct ❤️

When I moved into a Victorian house, the neighbour came by, looked at what why had done to the place then pointed to a place on the bedroom floor and said ‘aye, that’s where I found her!’. Explained he had a key and hadn’t seen the neighbour for a few days so let himself in and she was dead on the floor of our master bedroom. Didn’t sleep well that night but it was actually a peaceful house to live in.

Canal Street (jokingly known as Anal Treet) is the gay village in Manchester and is fun, although rather overrun by hen parties these days. Featured heavily in the Uk version of Queer as Folk. Their nearby Chinatown is great and has wonderful restaurants serving cheap authentic food. In Edinburgh visit the Botanic Gardens for something different, also take the time to climb Arthur’s Seat which has the best views over the city. Good gay scene too although haven’t been in a while - Polo Lounge a good place to start, also CCBlooms, both long established.

I did go to Turkey but didn’t like the two clinics I visited, it didn’t feel right and I have health conditions which increased the risks, plus UK dentists won’t treat you if anything goes wrong and you’ve had it done abroad. I also needed a slightly more complicated version using Zygomatic (cheekbone) implants which are harder to find. Despite thinking I was paying for the best, they made the bridge too short so couldn’t attached one implant and cut an artery in the roof of mouth which needed cauterising and stitching!

This was for an op called all-on-4, essentially a bridge supported by implants. At one point it went down to £25k but when I booked in (after I had lost 4 teeth in a month) they decided it would ‘have to be £30k as originally quoted’!

Living in a house with one parking space on the drive, house opposite has 4 cars so can’t park outside mine as it would block the street. Parked further up, legally and not blocking/ impeding anyone. Two days later there are 3 neighbours looking in the windows, taking photos, shaking heads, asking up and down the street whose it is… you’d think I had a baby and basket of puppies in there but no, it was taxed, insured, MOT’d, fully paid for and legally parked. Got the last laugh by triggering the central locking from the key fob behind my curtain, they jumped a mile!

How many of you have a car loan?

Posted by ComputerSoup@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 537 comments

YorkieN@reddit

Never had a car loan, always buy at the bottom of the depreciation curve when they are cheap but still reliable (normally around 6-7 years old) and sell when they start becoming a worry (normally 10-12 years old). This has meant depreciation of less than £1000 over three years on a 2014 Dacia Duster, less than £3000 over 5 years on a BMW 330D convertible and less than £500 over two years on a BMW Z4. All great cars for their use and combined still less than the cheapest hatchback you can buy new!
