If the government instigates the proposed social media ban, everyone would have to prove their age to be allowed to access Reddit. Would you submit your ID to access Reddit or will you give up social media rather than submit to ID checks?

The purpose of verification is to keep children from seeing things they shouldn't. You're going to have to explain why a government that doesn't want to get your internet activity would set up a system so that a subsequent government run by their political opponents can do it, and why that subsequent government wouldn't be able to just set that up themselves. Please try to think things through bud.

I don't think there's an appreciable difference, except that I've never cooked beans in a saucepan in such a way that I didn't have to scrape stuck, burnt beans off the bottom of it afterwards.

Is there a reason for the difference in pronouncing “armchair”?

I can't really watch most of my favourite shows past a certain time at night, because there's no audio setting or volume level that is quiet enough in the loud parts and loud enough during dialogue.

I didn't say abuse is only hitting a child on the street. That's an argument you're assigning to me because it's easier than arguing against what I'm actually saying. Those indicators are far more nuanced and can only be judged by an adult either with training in safeguarding children, or by an adult who knows that child and their situation. Preferably both. The child was being taken to school, where the teachers will see everything OP saw, and they have more information from seeing that child every day. OP, by calling the school, is not giving the school any extra information that the teachers don't already have. They aren't contributing to the safeguarding of that child, they're just sticking their oar in.

Would you reach out and report this? If so how?

Posted by Excellent-Run-7924@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 246 comments

WritesCrapForStrap@reddit

Yeah that's true if you see a child being abused, not if you see a child dressed scruffily while having scrawny legs. If the teachers and other adults have eyes they can see the same thing, and they have far more information than some random stranger who's made a 5 second judgement.

How do people in the UK view Sweden as a country and culture?

Posted by Solvikar@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 551 comments

WritesCrapForStrap@reddit

Yeah, technology and culture go hand in hand. The cultural change brought on by telegraph, telephone, radio, cars, flights, trains, the internet, etc is clearly technologically driven. A thousand years ago, your life followed basically the same way as your parents and your grandparents. That's not true today because of technology acceleration.

Would you reach out and report this? If so how?

WritesCrapForStrap@reddit

That's technological acceleration though. The 150 years between 900 and 1050 had far, far less progress in any arena than the 150 years between 1850 and 2000. The same can be said for 0-150 compared to 900-1050.

Ah yes, why would the cyclist use the red coloured path left of the road behind the kerb and grass - which is a *cycle path* next to the 70mph road when you can be on the 70mph road...

Posted by Classic_Peasant@reddit | miltonkeynes | View on Reddit | 188 comments

WritesCrapForStrap@reddit

A lot of cyclists in here who seem to think the redways that I've personally seen are literally fine are actually deathtraps that must kill hundreds every year from metre wide metre deep potholes and tree roots as high as a man stood tall in some places. But going 20 mph on a dual carriageway is... safe?

‘Walk on the left’. Is this a thing in UK?

Posted by IsisPantofel27@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1493 comments

WritesCrapForStrap@reddit

No, it's not a thing. In this country, we walk in the middle of the path directly towards each other, then do a little dance contest a few metres out. The winner of the dance contest gets to decide which side they're walking on.

There is exactly one type of tea, and it's called "tea". You put milk and sugar in it, unless you hate yourself. All other drinks that call themselves tea are "froofy tea", and are misusing the word.

It's just an ID you have on your phone, and they're requiring it for proving your right to work when you get a new job. The crazies have heard "digital ID" and they think that means they'll need it to log onto websites or whatever, and when you tell them they're wrong they start shouting about how we're sliding into autocracy.

If you're a newspaper and you want to drive traffic to your website, one of the ways you do that is by promoting your articles on Reddit. Reddit isn't user driven anymore. With a marketing budget it is trivial to buy enough upvotes for visibility on the major subs.

You were wrong, and you're bending yourself in every direction to convince yourself that you weren't. The context of our conversation is that you asked what Judeo-Christian views have heavily influenced your morality. The golden rule is a Judeo-Christian view, it's literally in the bible, and the culture you grew up in taught you that view because that culture's moral teachings are based on Christianity. You didn't "entirely agree" with it before. Now you don't agree at all that we should treat people how we wish to be treated? Strange how you didn't say that before. Almost as if you're changing what you say your views are to suit your argument. Listen, I really don't care about anything you say from here, because it's pretty clear to me you'll say anything if it means you can convince yourself that you are perfect and correct all the time. It's a complete waste of time and energy for me, which is probably your main tactic for "winning" arguments anyway, so I won't bother.
