What happened to /r/unitedkingdom?

I used to browse that subreddit and actually read somewhat interesting developments that were happening in this country, find articles that were maybe obscure compared to your usual news cycle and generally it just seemed like “Apple News” but in a Reddit format. Nowadays it feels like more or less rehashing the exact same subjects everyday with a different title and the rhetoric. It is no longer focused on general news articles or anything in the realm of wholesome or useful, it’s just an ever ragebaiting, negative cesspit.. I don’t watch television so having all your news in one place and not having to rely on 5 different subreddits to get an image of what’s going on, was quite useful but that place hurts my brain.

Even when it's people doing the posting rather than bots, they just copy-paste known topics and/or low-effort "jokes" that are guaranteed to get a massed response. Even the more esoteric subs like r/solarpunk are mostly dominated by people arguing about various political systems rather than posting anything interesting, with a non-negligible number of pro-China trolls adding to the noise.

It is left wing on most topics, definitely centre left. The only topic that you’d say is right wing, which isn’t really a right wing policy anymore (I’d say it’s everything other than far left these days) is immigration (anti immigration also used to be a far left policy to protect workers). Economically, benefits, healthcare, workers rights etc are predominantly left wing views on here - the one that isn’t is a wealth tax but that’s more due to lack of efficacy than the principle - I suspect most people, myself included, who are against one would be all for one if the data showed it was an effective tax and economic growth driver. Immigration has the problem where you have full blown racists who are against it but also everyone else who just recognise that the number and demographic of immigration just isn’t good for the nation. When it was largely people from Europe, the balkans or the Caribbean who were either culturally very similar or willing to integrate, and not coming in at high six figure or low seven figure numbers every year, then there was a much weaker argument for being against it. When it’s large numbers coming from Islamic countries, whose culture and religion is not compatible with ours and have no desire to integrate into our frankly superior culture (far less homophobic, sexist, incestual and violent) then you have to either prefer the cultures of places like Pakistan or be insane to think it’s a good thing.

Unless subreddits take steps to limit or ban them, any of these spaces on Reddit get taken over by the accounts of tabloid newspapers using them to farm clicks to their articles and mine reactions to use as reports of ‘public opinion.’ A quick glance at that sub shows that pretty much all of the content is just the UK tabloid accounts posting their own ‘articles’ so there’s really no value in the sub as a whole unless you’re a bot that’s been programmed to propagate the ongoing manufactured culture wars.

UK subs like ukpolitics, greenandpleasant, and many others are pretty bad for this kind thing. They are controlled by people with agendas to push agendas. The big problem in Reddit atm all over the world is the profusion of new subs popping up, particularly variations of ask”x” and politics and news related ones that are fairly obviously a coordinated operation to raise the salience of divisive political and cultural issues. Askbrits in the UK is mostly 20 contentious topics about race, immigration, sexuality, religion every day, primarily immigration in the UK. I noticed the other day a post on ask Japan though that they noticed a coordinated increase in questions about these topics coming primarily from fairly new accounts some of which were clearly bots, and others that were non Japanese speaking bad actors. There are people out there who really want to keep us at each other’s throats as much as possible.

Yes - I’ve been posting on internet forums since about 2006, and given I’m in my early 30s I would say that’s a little unusual given most people my age under 35 probably just jumped straight to social media. I fell into them naturally through my hobby of gaming and looking online, and always though they were the best means of debate and discussion on the internet, you can only really ever argue with the points made. I then of course gravitated towards Reddit as Reddit has likely killed all internet forums as we know it (X is an absolutely dump fire now and I only have an account for accessing football news stories where it does well). It seems like so much stuff on Reddit is second guessing whether you are training AI models and really stupid questions being asked, particularly in the ‘Ask’ sites as you mentioned. I see lots of content posted on Facebook & TikTok which is so blatantly AI yet the comments are no one pointing it out. Unsure whether people just dont care or dont notice - probably a bit of both.

I agree, it's being manipulated by 1. asking politically aggressing questions that push people specifically to engage/ respond- using bots and advertising companies (some working through politics) who are collecting data on how to get people to pay attention to content, and to peddle advertising in those conversations 2. the algorithm, which is now aggressively pushing specific content from subreddits based on how often you open up the comments section. if you open a conversation, youll get dumped with a lot of stuff specific to that topic. you will assume that's all the world thinks about as it absolutely fills your feed

The mods of rWorldPolitics a few years ago decided to effectively stop moderating completely. No enforcing the subs rules, no removing of racist / sexist / etc comments or posts. Just complete anarchy (in the guise of free speech). To test this, people started posting erotic images of anime characters. rAnime_Titties took offence to this attempted usurpation, and decided to become a surprisingly well put together political subreddit.

The mods are very authoritarian over there. It's starting to creep in to rConservative, or rWorldNews territory. Any 'divisive' subject (e.g. immigration, trans) is locked down to only those who met a mysterious criteria known only to the mods. If your opinion doesn't align with theirs, you're not allowed to voice it. They also have a system whereby if other users report your comments for any reason enough times (something like three times in three months), the mods will permaban you without warning. the moderators of that subreddit ruined the subreddit. I'm glad we're all in agreement. Totally bewildering moderation choices, absolutely unnecessary, far harsher than the rest of Reddit, obviously biased in whatever unscrupulous way any individual moderator was biased. Threads with 500 comments, all of which are deleted - just a total disregard for the time and emotional effort those 500 people put into their comments. I swerve the subreddit completely. Posting in it is a bad idea anyway because exposing yourself to their moderators makes you many times more likely to be permabanned from this website.

It’s not just the uk subreddits, any main country sub, and many large city ones somehow end up completely astroturfed, full of bots and people who all have suspiciously similar views about specific topics. Turns out if you want to get a lot of clicks and engagement then being divisive and letting racists argue in the comments is the way to do it. Those with decent moderation last a bit longer & r/London is actually doing okay, afaik. Though certain topics do attract a lot of attention from outside the sub, unsurprisingly. There are more mod tools now for those who want to use them to help with this stuff, but yeah some of the big subs are too far gone.

Everything I find useful about Reddit is 5yrs old. The content here is now universally rage bait or political propaganda. Even niche subs are just memes with zero value to end users. There’s a tribalistic protection of brands and ideas with competing interests at odds in the next sub over. I think it’s the end of Reddit soon for its former use as a place to find advice and knowledge.

Its a sub for UK related stuff which is primarily news articles. It will cover a very wide range and normally will focus on what is the themes that are most prominent at the time. This does tend to skew things a bit. The mods aren't editors and as long as they don't break the rules then they can be posted. Best thing to do is if you find something that interests you then post it on there.

Of all the subs I read often that one is the worst for the bubble There are times I am on the prevailing opinion's side of the debate and the most low energy comment agreeing with it will attract a disproportionate number of up votes. And times when I am on the other side, which leads to any comment that isn't in line with the popular view getting down voted to insanity It's fine, that's how Reddit works, but it does stifle anything like actual discussion

Authoritarianism needs a crises to keep you angry and/or scared. A lot of the people pushing certain political topics or view points right now are deliberately stirring up hate and anger within us commoners. I’ve noticed the UK subs are often worse unfortunately. Even on YouTube and Facebook. Lots of angry people forcing us all to listen to their every grievance.
