Were you hit as a child by your parents/carers?

hi! another 33 year old woman checking in to say the same. i got headbutted by my father when i was 7 for chewing my peas in an annoying way. its given me attachment issues and made me scared of most men and perhaps wrongly, i think they are all capable of violence. confusingly, i now get on well with my dad. he is a kind man and will help anybody. i have no doubt he loves me a lot and he hasnt hit me since i was probably 9 or 10. i think he would say he regrets it. I will never forget it though and would never treat a child the same way. sending hugs to you both šŸ’˜ its a strange relief to read similar stories.

yeah i can appreciate that, but my gripe is more with ellie brennan (travel or newsreader girl idk?), she will literally laugh so loud and jarring over literally everything scott says. i get its supposed to be an energetic and uplifting show but i cant be listening to that at 7am āŒ

i’m 31F and listen to BBC Radio 2 all day long at work (i’m often working alone). I think its great and would say its quite in tune with British culture. (I actually despise the breakfast show with Scott Mills because I dont find it remotely funny, but will listen from 10am onwards)

i cant stand the scott mills show, im only 31 but it sounds really annoying and as you put it ā€œnoisyā€. i dont mind everyone else’s shows but will turn the breakfast show off every time!

OP, you could have written that for me! the exact same thing here, exactly i’m female and so was my best friend. i said i couldnt go to the wedding abroad so she deleted every picture of me from instagram and never iniated conversation again. after a year of trying, i gave up. incredibly weird behaviour imo!

thank you :) i got a job in a hospital and i’m still there. the job is directly related to my degree. having a job really stopped my psychic addiction because i simply didn’t have time to call them. prior to this job, many years ago i worked in a bar and it was actually great for my mental health. i made friends, its flexible and can be so busy that your mind is completely distracted from bad thoughts. theres also scope to rise up in hospitality and become a manager/area manager, etc. maybe something you could consider? good luck with everything! i trust everything will work out for you in the end.

when i graduated uni, all my friends i had lived with for 3 years moved away all over the country. at the same time, my relationship ended, he had cheated on me and moved in with another girl. simultaneously, my beloved nan was declining with a new diagnosis of dementia and on top of this, i was unemployed, in my overdraft and was so anxious i was spending up to Ā£300/day calling psychics - asking them whether my ex missed me. i felt so lonely and a huge failure. (i was so skint that i got trapped in a car park because i couldnt afford the Ā£6 to get out. i had to call natwest to loan me an emergency Ā£20 which i had 24 hours to pay back) if it wasn’t for my amazing parents, it would have been so much worse. they looked after me, charged me no rent and supported me while i found a job. 9 years later: i have a good job which i love, savings, no overdraft, new friends and way less anxiety! i also LOL at myself for being heartbroken over that guy - he’s absolutely not my type anymore!

Help me settle a debate with my wife, who’s more famous : Olivia Attwood or Bradley Dack?

Have you financed yourself as an adult?

32F. Work full time and have done since graduating. Before uni, I also worked a minimum wage job from age 16. Have always financed myself with no help from the government. However, I am so incredibly lucky because my parents have always supported me emotionally and have provided a safe home for me and have never asked for rent. We come from a working class background and now that I earn a decent wage with a decent amount of savings, I treat them to things. Having supportive parents is the biggest key to success.

How long did it take for you to get a job after graduating?

its exposure therapy! just get a casual, part time job in a shop, petrol station, mcdonalds, etc. your social anxiety will get better - trust me, its what i did! and yes youre 21, you should be more independent from your parents. if nothing changes you’ll be in the same situation 1 years down the line. (i also definitely recommend enrolling in a college though!)

Does everybody in the UK live in debt nowadays?

Posted by VastYogurtcloset8009@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 210 comments

Weary_Rule_6729@reddit

i have no debt except mortgage. i drive a £37k car but only because it is a salary sacrifice car and i do a lot of miles, so needed a new reliable car. none of my friends are crazy in debt tbh but i do think my neighbours must be! - shes a hairdresser 3 days a week, he works in insurance - 2 kids - holidays to dubai and tenerife 2 or 3x a year - drive an audi a3 and audi q3 - she has designer bags all the time (loewe, gucci, LV, you name it) - recent wedding abroad that must have cost at least £25k! i earn more than them but would struggle to pay for all of that. i imagine its credit cards - i dare not get one!

How do I know I’m ready to move out?

Posted by No_Raccoon4556@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 178 comments

Weary_Rule_6729@reddit

going against the grain here, but the importance of moving out before 30 is very much a western (read: UK and USA) idea and probably based on people’s expectations they had of themselves in the 80s, 90s, 00s. i think if you moved away for uni for 3 years then you have experienced some kind of independence anyway (no idea if you have but just saying). basically do whatever makes you happy. its so amazing that you have lovely, supportive parents and they wont be around forever. if youre happy to stay there, then stay there for a bit longer. dont be pressured into following other people’s ideals.
