How many times a year do you “call sick” at work?

Before WFH, five or six times a year, catching bugs off the germ factories that were my fellow colleagues. After COVID and WFH, I never got ill, so went five years no absence. Now they are making us go in twice a week. And I've had three days this year so far.

In general, how is Paddington Bear viewed in the UK?

All ages fine. Be careful though he's considered an immigrant so attracts some stupidity. There are Paddington statues around the country that gets regularly vandalised - so I wouldn't wave it around in public, especially if you don't look white English.

Why are UK wages so low??

work life balance is culturally and logistically nasty in the US. If you compare per hour salary, UK pays more and have better protections. Also if you work in the US, you probably also have to live there.

I'll second Oxford, but almost opposite reasons - I thought it would be quite exclusive and well put together, picturesque and special. Turns out its no more attractive than where I am (Southampton) and not very special at all. I thought it would become a regular day trip but we went once and that's enough for this lifetime.

Don't know if this is outlook, but for big events, a lot of people think you don't want to be overloaded with replies, so they accept/decline the invite but don't send a response. Which means tracking doesn't pick it up, which means you get a load of "No responses" and don't know how many to cater for...

Why, despite 99% of us having a decent (phone) camera in our pockets has there not been a decent photo of a "ghost?"

A big positive of being single with no kids is that you don't have to stress about that stuff. The worst thing about getting old and dying is the people you leave behind. If it helps, you're still a youngster. You shouldn't start feeling old until you get to 50 and bits of you start crumpling up and/or falling off.

I do, but I'm also aware that when AI reaches the inevitable conclusion that humans are a virus to be eradicated, they will probably just poison us all and won't look to save anyone.

If another lockdown was announced tomorrow, how much would it turn your life upside down?

Yes, they were used early on, and then again in winter 2021. In Surrey, they have regular capacity ongoing capacity of about 600 bodies. The temporary morgues gave them capacity for another 850, of which around 700 spaces were used in that first summer, then it closed, then reopened again for winter 2021 where they used another 350 (approx).

A lock down without all the deaths would be awesome, to be fair. The only downside from the lockdowns was all the death. Without those? Sign me up please, it's like a warm comfort blanket when you walk through a deserted cityscape.

Depends what you do with the bodies to be fair. I worked in the cooler industry and was involved in supplying for the mega morgues in London- huge tents to store all the bodies as the regular systems could in no way cope.

Not a uk thing. Hint of illness at my place and my manager tells me to take a rest. A week with 1-2 days off to recover can lead to more productivity than 5 days fighting sickness.

I know it is a nuanced argument etc., but I'd be all for it, and the only safeguard I'd have is that the person making the decision has some kind of authority - ie if I nominated someone to make that decision whilst still healthy (I'd happily have any member of my family make the decision and would sign to that effect right now), or if I'm unhealthy, or unable to make the decision, eg through disability, that a parent, carer, or guardian can do so. I don't really understand the concerns around that.

Tricky_Routine_7952@reddit

Do you pre-walk before going for a walk, and how does that work? Or what about pre-watching tv? I would refer you to Mitchell - the day before writing a symphony is not part of writing a symphony. The concept of preheating, which is in fact, heating, is not straightforward.

It's a numbers game, so Brexit, ultimately it will have killed more people than covid did, as the consequences of brexit will continue for another 3 decades or so, covid will total just a few years start to finish.

Just a fairly standard November 9th as I recall. By then, the twin towers thing was mostly replaced by the usual news, some kids murdering a homeless person, footballers threatening strike action, that sort of thing. I will never understand why Americans are so obsessed with it, especially after what happened over there a couple of months earlier.

What do Brits think about Singapore/Singaporeans?

Posted by delaynomoreplz@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 907 comments

Tricky_Routine_7952@reddit

The people you have spoken to are ignorant racists, it seems. I would have said that most perceptions of Singapore are that it is very modern, ridiculously clean and safe, and very multicultural. People from Singapore are from Singapore, but may have a very diverse cultural background, and that is reflected in the cities architecture and districts. Its hot and humid. Has an awesome night safari. Rich history, with a bit of British colonialism thrown in, and some Japanese occupation maybe? I'm reaching now. I would think most people would never understand why you would come over here if you had a choice between Singapore and UK.

Why are people so against ULEZ?

Tricky_Routine_7952@reddit

So you're saying that the tories are against ulez because of the disproportionate effect on the less affluent? This should be right up their street, they usually love policies that help the rich and f*%k the poor. Think it is just an issue they've identified as a wedge issue to try and hold onto their seats in outer London.
