Have people in the United States ever met and interacted with extended family members outside of uncles and cousins?

Posted by Cookieman_2023@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 154 comments

TalkingRose@reddit

I somewhat had the opportunity while growing up but I was absolutely uninterested in the affair. I have never been big on large gatherings of people. Even the family gatherings that just counted what we would consider to be close family and maybe like one layer out were still much bigger than I was any kind of happy or comfortable with. As an adult, while I am sure it has made assorted family members sad, I have reasonably dropped off the family map.

As someone who spent multiple years working for Walmart, I can assure you they treat their employees like garbage. Many of the benefits available are *only* available if you work above a certain amount of hours. Which the bulk of their basic employees do not. At least at a local supermarket you are not just a cog in the wheel that they can pitch out the door anytime they want & just grab a fresh one. You exist as a person to them.

Do you eat pasta with tuna?

I had tuna noodle cassarole growing up (using egg noodles, not spaghetti) but as the recipe I know used cream of mushroom soup, which had dairy, to which I am allergic, I no longer consume it. Macaroni & cheese with tuna & peas on the other hand? Staple of my life. (Thankfully, after nearly 2 decades of *not* getting my mac & cheese, finally found a good dairy free brand)

Does everyone have a middle name in the USA? Do all women take their husband’s surname?

My maiden name had a vowel near the end that no one ever expected, so my life was littered with constantly correcting the spelling to people. *Really* looked forward to ditching that issue when I got married. ......the love of my life, other half of my soul who I would be devastated to be without - has a last name with a *different* vowel than people would expect. *deep sigh* STILL constantly correcting people's spelling of my last name. I just cannot win with that.....

The first (& amusedly only) time we heard our eldest cuss as a kid, he was....4? I think. He had been eating yogurt in his high chair, wanted down, wandered off....then returned about 5 min later, drags a stool over to stand on so he can peer over the edge & into his yogurt cup.... "Damn" Whole body droop. His cup was empty. Funniest part was then he just....put the stool away & slumped off to cuddle his puppy plush. Silly lad could have asked for more. Lol

I just had to card someone at work a few hours ago and discovered that they were born all of about two and a half months before I graduated high school. They then followed up this random, unknown to them bombshell by revealing that they went to the same *school* that I did. (I know that twist of conversation sounds kind of illogical but it was actually functional at the time.) My mind is like....but...that was not *drinkable age* ago.....? What? .......I graduated in 2000.

Than I am glad it improved since I was in school, as at that point we lost at least one car of teens a year. Was only 1 kid one year, but the very next there was 3 in the one car & 2 in the one that slammed into them. Passenger in one of them survived for about a week if I recall correctly. It was tragic but also considered an angry normal. No one *wanted* it that way but the schools/whatever office decided snow days kept.....not calling snow days. So off into the ice & snow they went...

Pros - Far less deaths of children & especially teens in transit to & from schools in accidents caused by icy/sleet covered roads. Cons - I am sure, depending on who & where one is, the cons list would change drastically. Everything from tourism needing to *entirely* shift gears to societal life patterns changing. People get grouchy about change, irrespective of it being good or bad.

Plus side, ranching bison is keeping them alive & around! They are tasty as well. I have heard of venison farms & spoken to a few people who more personally knew of them but never seen one myself yet.

It is sad, in some ways, to think of bison as "exotic livestock". They are *native* to this continent! So are the other two but at least bison are a cattle-adjacent. Lol

Do you usually lock your doors when leaving the house?

Posted by Moist_Wallaby8635@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 2182 comments

TalkingRose@reddit

Growing up, I lived in the country and I don't think we really locked the doors when we were leaving for only like 10 minutes? The front door was always locked but that was because we never used it. We only used the door that went out into the garage. These days, I live in more large town/small city kind of location and the doors are constantly locked. Irrespective of being home or out- the doors are always locked.

Did you write with pencils in school?

Posted by palep_hoot@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 853 comments

TalkingRose@reddit

When I was in school, which admittently was over 20 years ago, yes. Number two pencils was the pencil that one had to purchase with your school supplies every year. It stayed pencils through the entirety of my schooling all the way to my graduation. In my college year, which was 2 years later it was still predominantly pencils but there were one or two classes that encouraged the usage of pens instead. That's it though.

On the retail end of reality, while overtime is not generally a concern (I can hear corporate already panicking 🙄) one *can* get fired for some of the most ridiculous shit. Which boils down to believing one person over the other, bad management, etc but it still happens. Makes me glad my current store is union. To fire someone, they had to have broken actual rules & have actual proof they can give the union people. Or they will fight it tooth & claw. Where I work, I really cannot call off. We do not have the staffing. Partly due to lack of hours, which is corporate's call, not ours. Sick? Road covered in ice? Well, the last one I could stay home for but my drive is over 1/2 hour. If I lived in same town, I would been expected to be there anyways. Sick though you are expected to still come in if you are not bad enough to be in the hospital.........we are a *pharmacy* people! Argh!!! (They walked back covid protections so fast post-pandemic I got whiplash) After working for this company for 9 years, I have clawed my way to 3 weeks vacation.....and get argued with every year trying to use it. Obviously, I should just use little drips across the year, never actually getting a true break, all so they do not have the inconvenience of me actually using it....Store manager argues she does not really use *hers* so I do not actually *need* to use mine. Not all of us in shitty spots are loud but we definitely hurt. From what I can see in my life experiences, the shittier jobs that way tend to be lower down the ladder. I am happy for you that you can have such a rest from your job. :)

My store manager & I (neither of us give 2 farts about the SB) got into a discussion earlier, having recalled that we think it is coming up...took a couple back & forths before we could agree we both thought it was in February... She was kind of wanting to order more things in for it but neither of us could recall *when* in February it was. She thought after Valentine's, I thought before.... We had to flag in a coworker who actually cares about football to ask. Found out it was tomorrow. We were just "huh. Guess we have what we have" *shrug* Coworker's over there, laughing at us.

Is "ya'll" a regional thing or is that used everywhere in the US?

Posted by FastBreakPhenom@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 900 comments

TalkingRose@reddit

"You all" is the shortest translation. Indicative of a group of people, higher than 2, less than everyone present, also sometimes anyone associated with the person you are talking to in that specific context. Like....talking to someone who drives trucks for a living, asking them something about most/all truckers such as " do y'all do x thing?"

Is it considered rude to snap your fingers to someone to get their attention?

Posted by BankaiBroke@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 835 comments

TalkingRose@reddit

In America, (to add to what others say) snapping fingers at someone for their attention is rather akin to treating them like a dog. Largely as that is how many people here get their dog's attention, for good or ill. So snapping at people is viewed as a warped mix of you treating them like a hound you are calling to heel & a servant you expected to already be there. Impatient & rude. Cultural differences are wild, aren't they?

Older Millenials that want to indentfiy as GenX

Why does no one ever seem to remember that when they started chucking around "millennial" it was for people born IN THE NEW MILLINIUM?! It started at 2000. When it really started being talked about as a label, anyone born IN 2000 was referenced as a "millennial". Not BEFORE. Gen X USED to include 1981. The 80's as a whole. ....given how much said Gen gets forgotten/ignored, it should not surprise me that society just....shifted it for no reason.

Are thank you cards no longer a thing…?

Posted by c234567@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 526 comments

TalkingRose@reddit

See? This is why they died! When I think of thank you cards, I am beset by memories of my bio father, sitting with a flippin clipboard, every christmas, so he can record each present, from each person, so that each child could then write a thank you LETTER (notes were not going enough, there needed to be, at MINIMUM 2 paragraphs & if it was that short, they better sound good) for each item received. There was a type of tone we were to hit, appropriate things to say.....after writing it, we had to then submit them to him to check - then had to rewrite any he found "not good enough". There was nothing about "gratitude" learned from these exercises. I learned resentment I had mastered the fine art of bullshitting my way through these by like, 9. Incidentally, was super helpful in high school when you had to make a long paper out of very little info - already knew how to make filler words adults approved of....🙄
