Landcruiser 250, fastest selling car in America

**MISLEADING:** The writers are measuring cars with low inventories such as higher end vehicles with a small market share... and then calling it "fastest selling car an America". **What a farce.**

We bought 2 used Prius when they were about 3 years old and both had about 100,000 miles. 2011 Prius Four: Bought 2014, now has 215,000 with one repair, AC. Still delivers 48MPG. Looks very nice in and out. This has leather interior. 2012 Prius v Five (the larger wagon-back). Bought in 2015, now has 211,000 with one repair, water pump. Delivers 38 to 36 MPG (less than EPA but we installed Michelin Pilot Sport on this one for nicer handling and these are a little stickier tires). Looks fantastic in and out. This has Softex interior and it looks absolutely like new.

Car lots, are they sketchy?

SyntheticOne@reddit

Yes, call ahead if you can; they will check is the car is still on the lot (assuming you're interested in a particular car they are advertising). Yes, get prequalified at a credit union or your bank. The lender will check your credit score, current debt payments, work history and income. They will calculate reasonable ratios to keep you solvent. This happens outside the stress of a car lot office and give you time to think it through. Also, the terms should be better than typical dealership offers. Contact a good mobile mechanic to perform a pre-purchase inspection BEFORE you sign the papers, but AFTER you think you have struck a deal. Get the Carfax BEFORE striking a deal. Even if the dealer provides a Carfax, consider paying for one on your own to make sure the dealership Carfax is correct. If you can, bring a KNOWLEDGEABLE helper who has been through the process. Dealerships are experts. Most or honest but some are not... all of them have skills that you do not, so extra support can be helpful. Good luck.

I would, but would arrive well prepared. Get the VIN, get a free carfax from the dealer, look over the car carefully, understand value before looking at the car, if financing have that secure ahead of time and hire a mobile mechanic to closely examine the goods. We have a five mile strip in our city that is lined with 50 or more used car lots. Most specialize in selling rebuilt title cars. Some specialize in selling rebuilt cars with clean titles.

Yes. But not nearly as sketchy as most places of "worship". There over 10,000 distinct religions and many offshoots such as the over 30,000 Christian sects. So likely about 100,000 religions in total, with new ones forming every hour. They all have one thing in common: They all aver that they are the "one true religion".

How about an EV? No transmission to break. No oil to change. Not even a starter motor! Also, no gas tank, no spark plugs, no alternator, no engine, no radiator, no drive shaft, no exhaust system, and NO EMMISSIONS!!! What EVs do provide includes cost per mile in an EV is about 1/5th the cost of gas per mile, quiet, stellar acceleration and 1-pedal driving driving.

Most EVs. Better performance, fewer parts to break, less maintenance and you will save on cost per mile EV vs gas car... with electric costing 1/5th the cost of fossil fuel. Hint: many EV buyers find better value in buying a used EV to save on intitial 2 years of depreciation.

IF you can plug in at home, then consider an EV. Most people drive less than 40 miles a day on average and a standard 120V. wall outlet can add over 50 miles of range during a 12 hour overnight charge. You can purchase a used 2022 to 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 with under 50K miles for less than $20,000. In our area, our cost per mile is 1/5th to 1/8th the cost of gas per mile. And, zero emmissions.

I think that some people need to wake up to the fact that ultra highend EVs can do things that V12 cars cannot do, such as put out zero pollutants to help save the Earth while you're out having fun. That and the fact that such an EV can blow the doors off the old gas guzzlers. Mi dos pesos.

EV is clearly the answer IF you can plug in at home to a 120V wall outlet. Our EV has an EPA combined range of 303 miles (mild temperatures. The 303 is derived from about 250 miles range at 70 mph and about 350 mile range at 40 mph. We general drive less than 40 miles a day and so plugging in at 120V an overnight 12 hour charge session would gain about 55 miles of range. Our cost per mile has been 1/6th the cost of gas per mile and of late, more like 1/8th the cost of gas per mile... and, no more trips to the gas station lines. Cost? You can find a good used higher end EV under $20K and a good used lower end EV (Chevy Bolt, Nissan Leaf) under $12K. Beg, borrow or steal enough money to get into an EV. Far less mantenance and far more satisfying.

EVs. I think the notion of an electric vehicle sparks something in my imagination that brings some sort of satisfying feeling. We now own one and it does not disappoint. I still love certain automotive creatures that have a great sense of design, practicality, speed and handling, outstanding reliability and affordability; all of these take exceptional design to stand out. In my own history of ownership, cars the make the cut have been 1965 Sunbeam Alpine, 1965 Citroen DS19, 1966 Mercedes-Benz 230SL, 1982 Mercedes-Benz 320SEC, 1982 Saab Turbo sedan, 1988 Saab CD Turbo, 1990 Lexus LS400, 2006 Scion xB, 2012 Prius v Five, and last 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL.

Should I go Hybrid vs all-gas for a long term vehicle?

Posted by Flintlock1990@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 44 comments

SyntheticOne@reddit

It's 30 mpg combined for the non-hybrid and 40 mpg combined for the hybrid. Will this 25% savings on gas pay for the extra cost of the hybrid? I would not worry at all about the durability of the hybrid battery; most hybrids will be junked with the original hybrid battery pack.

Circa 1965 Citroen DS. There were two trim levels DS19 which I owned and DS21 which French President Charles de Gaulle owned (he bought them by the dozen). My lower DS19 trim version had: Hydropneumatic suspension allowing changing of tires without a jack, four speed manual transmission with lever mounted at the top of the steering column and automatic clutching, sofa like seating front an rear, spare tire mounted under the hood ahead of the radiator to be used as a crumple device in a crash and it got about 30 mpg. De Gaulle's DS21 trim actually saved his and his wife's life when they were ambushed by machine-gun toting assassins who shot the Citroen several dozen times but did not incapacitate the car allowing de Gaulle to escape.

RUN, waddle, or pole vault the hell away from there. The reason that fantastic, high end, wonderful condition cars are on the market real cheap is the owners of these cars dread the next $10,000 repair job. Corolla, Civic, Scion and a few others come in cheap and they are reliable unless abused.

EV. Our 2022 Ioniq 5 SEL RWD has a 303 mile EPA combined range. We charge ours from a standard 120V wall outlet at about 1/5th the cost of gas per mile. These can be found used with low mileage for under $20,000 and with existing Hyundai warranty. With your use of 2 hours a day you would need either a L2 (240V) home charger or a nearby DC fast charger. Or rely on a charger at work if provided. It is such a joy to eliminate gas station visits.

"Oefening baart kunst". For most mortals, "practice makes perfect" is often the answer to discomforts. Find a large empty parking lot on a weekend and practice driving, reversing, parking. Then graduate to a low traffic neighborhood or industrial park, stop for coffee or tea, then do it again. Then go out to celebrate over a nice dinner. Veel succes!

About a 1,000 miles. A few times now. I likely would not do it for a private party sale as established dealerships are usually more reliable at holding the car after paying a deposit then flying in. I look at it as an adventure/mini-vacation during the flight out and the drive back.

Consider for a moment that rare instance when you parents are right and you are wrong. What parents care most about are their kids. A newer car such as you Camry is much safer than most used cars... all those Toyota Safety Sense features can save your life and giving that up is very hard for parents to walk away from. My advice is to follow their lead, keep the Camry (and be very grateful for that), and learn household economics in all the other ways to learn that does not involve your well-being.

Negotiating used prices?

SyntheticOne@reddit

The answer lies in the good old "Supply and Demand". If dealership management is overstocked on a particular model they will cede to bring things back in balance. But, as another entry says, cost-out buying new vs used including offered financing terms, the depreciation hit (typically less with a Toyota), the insurance cost, the sales tax. Once you see the full picture, you'll know the answer that works for you.

Get a used Ioniq 5 EV for under $20,000 Why? 1. Where we are the cost per mile of range when charging at home L1 (120V standard wall outlet) is 1/5th the current cost of gas per mile in a comparable car. 2. When we charge overnight we regain 3.64 miles per hour of charge and so in 15 hours we gain 58 miles of range. If at the end of the week you're running low, then a quick visit to a DC charger can be done in just a few minutes. 3. Superb safety electronics may keep you alive by avoiding accidents. 4. Decent Highway Driver Assist allows the car to do the driving, reducing fatigue. 5. Not much to maintain. 6. Rip-roaring fun to drive. 7. While saving the planet. 8. And never having to stop for gas. 9. What more do you need? [Here are 35 Hi5 under $20,000 with clean title....](https://www.cars.com/shopping/results/?list_price_min=0&list_price_max=20000&makes%5B%5D=hyundai&models%5B%5D=hyundai-ioniq_5&clean_title=true&zip=79912&maximum_distance=9999&sort=list_price) I suggest looking for an SEL or Limited trim. If you buy an SE trim look for ones with the larger 72 kWh battery. The SEL and Limited all have the larger battery.

For the same budget, consider a Toyota Venza Limited (the best trim, or XLE) model years 2021-2023 with about the same mileage. The Venza is "Lexus like", Toyota reliability, gets better gas mileage since it's a hybrid (about 40 MPG), has better interior room and it looks better.

Consider a 3 year old EV with AWD for under $25,000US. If you can charge at home these heavily depreciated cars can be absolute winners. Our cost per mile is about 1/6th the cost of gas per mile in a comparable car. Since our daily use is under 60 miles, we charge using a standard 120V wall outlet.
