Are convenience store workers allowed to put shoplifters into a headlock?

Posted by Shot-Ad5867@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 31 comments

SureWhatever02@reddit

You can use reasonable force to attempt to prevent a crime and to defend yourselves and others. If you have given them an opportunity to return taken items and they have been physically aggressive towards you, then yes, absolutely you can put them in a headlock. The key factor is to make sure its abundantly clear that they made the first aggressive move.

There's one in the tunnel near the train station here in Middlesbrough. I thought it was just a boro thing. I guess they must be more common than I thought.

There were usually 3 or 4 different kinds of cereal in the breakfast cupboard so they regularly all ended up in the same bowl 🤣 Frosties, Weetos, Rice Krispies, Whatever. The only thing that didn't even go in was Weetabix, because it's gross.

What’s your hobby and what’s your advice for others on how get started in it?

I play D and D and other roleplaying games at least twice a week. As for how to get started, try to find a local games club or games shop. Most of these will have a beginner friendly group who will teach you the basics. Try googling "D and D Adventurer's league near (your town or city) as this is the official Wizards of the coast program for new players.

Why So Much Jimmy Carr?

SureWhatever02@reddit

Goes in cycles. There's always some comedian who seems to be on every bloody thing. Alan Carr, Rob Beckett, Romesh Ranganathan, Tom Allen to name a few have had overexposure to the point of frustration with seeing them everywhere in the past few years.

I once had to show an elderly gentleman how to open Microsoft Word. He didn't realise you had to double click to open it. After that, he cracked on surprisingly well by typing up his document with no problem. He needed me to show him how to save it and how to send it in an Email when he'd finished.

That's an extra hour and a half onto your work day basically. That's 13.5 hours working or doing work related stuff. Leaves you with 10.5 hours in your day. Now take off 8 hours for sleep, another hour for the necessary life stuff (Food, showering, bathroom breaks etc). That leaves only 90 minutes in your day for yourself. That doesn't seem good to me.

What do you do when you see a horse (ridden or being walked) in the road?

Posted by originallyale@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 645 comments

SureWhatever02@reddit

You slow right down to not spook the horse, only speeding up again when you're well clear. I don't drive myself but this is always what my Dad and brother do when passing horses.

Who is the best and worst live performer you have ever seen?

Posted by Early_Enthusiasm_787@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1305 comments

SureWhatever02@reddit

Most of the bands I've seen have been excellent with The Searchers probably being the best. Worst is much more obvious: A local band called Screaming Lights. They were terrible and got rightly booed. The singer didn't like that much and challenged the entire crowd to a fight. Luckily for him, his band mates dragged him away before he got too badly beaten.

I'm from Middlesbrough but have spent significant time in other North Yorkshire towns such as Richmond and Catterick. Generally I say I'm from "Boro" though.

Is Fools and Horses widely known in the UK?

It's often considered to be the greatest British sitcom ever. Yeah it's very well known. Most people over 20 have probably seen at least one episode at some point.

Do you butter both sides of a sandwich?

Posted by Sakulsas@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 774 comments

Buttering the sides that are going to be facing inwards is normal, leaving the outer sides clear. Buttering the outer sides that your hand is going to be touching as you eat would be crazy.

A further question to those of you who wear slippers around the house…?

Posted by Tanto207064@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 447 comments

SureWhatever02@reddit

Sock on to prevent sweaty feet from touching the slipper and making it gross over time. Socks can absorb it and be washed clean. Slippers can't be cleaned (as far as I know at least). I occasionally spray a quick blast of deodorant in to try and freshen them up a bit.

My second cousin Gareth. He's currently in prison for holding up a taxi with a sawn off shotgun. Latest in a long line of violent offences he's committed. Don't think he's been out of prison for longer than a month since he was 18.

Not particularly no. I do have a cool scroll with my family's one and a bunch of info about the name though. My brother got it when he was down in Cornwall for work.

Gone "home" only to snap back to reality and realise I was outside my old house, 3 miles away in a completely different village to where I actually lived at that time. Good job I was only at the garden gate and didn't try to go inside. That would have been very awkward.

What’s one thing you’re really glad you didn’t scrimp on?

Posted by Dawi118@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 209 comments

Shoes. I spent decades wearing cheap crap that had to be replaced every few months. I finally forked over some decent money for a pair of sketchers and they have lasted over a year so far. Need replacing soon but buying 1 quality pair compared to at least 4 shit ones has definitely been worthwhile.

What's the origin of your football clubs nickname?
