My 27M son has given up on life and I don't know what to do. Has any parent been in the same situation?

Not enough information to get a proper indication but this is very common with people with undiagnosed ADHD (even if they don't have much of the hyperactive side). It can make them very impulsive (starting a new business abroad), and burning out is very common in a world designed around neurotypical people. Unfortunately, it's very easy to hide. Even from yourself. I did well at school. I was terrible at studying and homework but I worked things out well enough to be good at exams. My brain is thinking many things at once, I can get very distracted and forgetful, even for important things. It makes sleep very difficult too. I can concentrate on things I enjoy, but if I don't want to do it, it's very difficult to convince myself to do so. Boredom feels like torture. I thought all of this was normal, and everyone feels it to some extent. Apparently not. I am older than your son, I spoke to the doctor a couple of years ago. I thought I was asking for anti depressants, but instead I got an ADHD diagnosis and stimulant medication. Made life easier (but not easy). If any of that resonates with your son, might be worth looking into.

No, toilet paper is designed to be absorbent so it'll suck up whatever germs are on the seat and leave it there for you to sit on. Better to wipe the seat and flush them.

Brother has no GCSEs and kicked out of college, what should I do?

Posted by antiglow@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 233 comments

Stratix@reddit

I agree with this commenter, neurodivergence is seriously worth considering. Your brother's experience is very typical of people with ADHD (sometimes with, sometimes without Autism). Scrolling through the other comments and I can see many of them suggest tough love. Tough love does not work well with things like ADHD. You can't shame them into fixing their executive dysfunction, and it's more likely to bring lasting trauma. 2 years ago, I found out I have ADHD. I'm in my late thirties. My brain's reward functions don't work properly. I was lucky enough to be academic, so I managed to get through school with decent grades even though I did the bare minimum homework and almost no study. Doing things that I can't find interest in can feel like absolute torture. I started medication recently and it's been lifechanging. I wish I had had it during school, I would have done so much better. Your brother is never going to be academical, he doesn't find it interesting enough. It was good of your family to set him up with something that requires the minimum of that sort of study, and I'm almost certain with a diagnosis and the right meds he'd find it a lot easier.

Which book(s) were you required to read in secondary school?

Lord of the Flies. I enjoyed the uneasy feeling the book gave me, but it always felt so... wrong. I just couldn't see that happening in real life, I felt like people would work together better and not descend into tribalism so quickly.

What could we do to improves the lives of young brits?

Financial education, taxes, credit cards, mortgages, debt, investments, stocks, shares, gains, losses etc etc. (Side note I think this could be fantastically demonstrated with class wide activities involving monopoly money. I'd do it myself if I didn't have to spend my life earning a living.) Political education. What left and right wing really mean. What both want. Tactics used, propaganda etc. Social media comprehension education. Identifying bias, fake news, bots, scams, etc. Understanding that every kid doesn't fit in the same bucket. When I was growing up we were all held to the same standards. That sounds fair but some kids had ADHD, others autism, others both, others trauma etc. They could learn, they had value to give with the right support. Instead they ended up in detention and in the lower sets over and over because they couldn't behave right. More systems to get people out of poverty. My heart breaks thinking back on the poor kids at my schools. We didn't understand. They got bullied like hell. Life would have sucked.

If you won £100 million, how would you distribute it amongst friends and family, if at all?

Posted by PaddedValls@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1626 comments

Stratix@reddit

The money would be going in a diverse investment portfolio, anyone getting anything, including me, would be getting it out of the income and part of the capital growth, nothing else. I would want to help family, but I'd likely need to get a trusted legal and financial team to ensure that it was done carefully. I wouldn't want to be part of the decisions, just the guidelines. The team can assess situations themselves.

Why do you think a Universal Basic Income (UBI) is sustainable?

Posted by quarky_uk@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 273 comments

Stratix@reddit

There's plenty of wealth in the country. It's just badly distributed. There would be an awful lot more wealth if poor kids could afford to get educated properly, and brilliant people weren't stuck in dead end jobs they hated.

What makes UK comedy so good is that the ego is left at the door, and the joke comes above all else. On panel shows you'll notice no one cares about the score, they care about the laughs. For this reason many jokes come easier, such as the ones you've mentioned.

As far as I'm concerned the best and cheapest option is get cheap carbonated water and then use it to dilute low calorie squash. Think this would tick all your boxes. Robinson's tends to be pretty good for it.

If you could implement one law in the UK what would it be?

It would limit the size of political party donations and prevent politicians from earning a second income while in office. Perhaps not as fun as some of the others mentioned here but might reduce some of the corruption in politics (if only a little).

Why and what was it like having only 3-4 channels in the UK up until the late 1990's?

Posted by ImplementNo7036@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1071 comments

Stratix@reddit

4 channels was tough but it was all we knew (apart from the rich kids that had Sky, I loved Cartoon Network). My mum would get the TV guide and I'd plan the programs I wanted to watch. The TV itself wouldn't give any info on the shows or what was up next. I think that information MIGHT have been on Teletext, but I can't remember that well. I felt like some of the programs then were higher quality but to be honest my standards were probably lower. The day we got free sat was incredible. Me and my friends watched the music channels all the time. The first one was so bad it didn't even say the name of the song at the start or the artist for the first few weeks. We didn't seem to care.

What do you think of tradesmen in the UK?

Posted by powliftstrong@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 892 comments

Stratix@reddit

I think the problem is many people have been burned by tradesmen in one of their most important and vulnerable places - inside their homes. If I can find a trustworthy tradesman who comes when he says he does, doesn't lose my spare keys, tidies up after himself, does a good job and charges a fair price (which I'm willing to increase if the other requests are met) then I'll hang on to them like gold dust.

Posted by Small_Brane@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 886 comments

This statement shouldn't be taken at face value. My assumption is that your friend doesn't like clubbing and is hoping to dissuade the rest of the friend group so they don't have to deal with it. Maybe they struggle with the cost, or previous bad experiences, or alcoholism, or overstimulation, or insecurities. There could be many reasons.

Look up the 'FIRE' (Financial Independence Retire Early) concept. There's ways to calculate sensible amounts depending on your living expenses. In most cases it's a fair amount more than £500k.
