What do you think about the upcoming homeschooling proposed bill?

Posted by ZydrateAnatomic@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 90 comments

Refrigernator@reddit

YES. This is what disturbs me most. The bill is mostly common sense and I’m not against the broad idea, but the fact that they can pretty much enforce entrance to a home whether you like it or not is highly concerning. Government overreach if you ask me.

I’m probably completely wrong, but I feel like a personal assistant who is capable with the use of AI will become invaluable. AI is great for a lot of things but I’m not convinced that any sensible business owner would rely on it without any human involvement. I certainly wouldn’t.

This is probably a super dumb question, but what specifically did you cut out? Because obviously there will be some sugar, at least natural sugars in at least some foods you eat right? Is it just sweets, chocolate etc or do you literally try to avoid anything at all that might contain sugar?

Incorrect. JW “Public Witnessing” is the opposite. They’re told to stand a reasonable distance away from the literature cart so that passersby can feel comfortable to take some without interaction, and only to chat of someone seems to indicate they’d like to. I’m sure there are rogue ones who ignore this, but they shouldn’t. Door to door is still their main method.

Pretty awful to be honest. In your situation I’d recommend getting an air to air heat pump installed instead. It’s essentially air conditioning, so fully electric and very efficient heating with the bonus of cooling too. And if you happen to be in the southeast I’d be happy to give you a quote. 😁

Should new builds come with AC?

Posted by ElektroSam@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 363 comments

“AC” is an air to air heat pump, and if they’re correctly sized they can be as efficient, sometimes slightly more efficient than an air to water heat pump, but works great for both heating  and cooling.

Why do UK supermarket fridges break down every time it’s 30°C?

Posted by Consistent_Desk6225@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 121 comments

Refrigernator@reddit

The big thing people are missing is efficiency. For a refrigeration system to be efficient, you want the low side pressures (dictated by the desired temperature of the product.) and the high side pressure (dictated largely by load, and the ambient temperatures) to be as close as possible so that the compressors don’t have to work as hard. So designing them to run at 45°c ambient means they’ll cope on the hottest days, but be needlessly inefficient most of the year round.  This I think is the biggest factor, we design the systems to work efficiently for most of the time, not to cope with the extremes.  With that being said, they are also poorly maintained due to an industry that seems to be in a never ending race to the bottom. There just isn’t the budget to do things properly.

Refrigernator@reddit

No this isn’t true. I’m a refrigeration engineer, currently not working in the supermarket sector but I used to, did 5 years. Pretty much all supermarkets have condensers located outside to reject the heat. You have the fridges on the shop floor, a compressor pack of some kind in a plant room and a condenser on the roof somewhere.  The big exception to this is in a lot of Waitrose stores where the fridges are all integral (all components including compressor are part of the shop floor fridge itself) but the heat is rejected into a circuit of water and glycol via a plate heat exchanger, it’s then pumped outside to a big fan coil unit essentially that rejects the heat to the air.

In this case and many others it’s definitely a scam but this comparison is silly. A neurosurgeon doesn’t pay for his own tools, training, vehicle, insurance, certification, time spent quoting etc.  There are scammers out there don’t get me wrong, but most trades don’t take home anywhere near what they charge.

Neither is unavoidable. This perception of tradespeople will change with time. It’s true that a lot of older tradesman have destroyed their bodies, but they worked the majority of their career in a time with much less regard for health and safety. These days we  (mostly) all wear the correct PPE, we don’t try to lift things by ourselves, avoid kneeling where possible etc. I believe the tradesmen who are currently in their 20s and 30s will be in much better shape by the end of outlet careers than your average 45-60 year old tradesman today.

My daughter is 4, she sleeps through most nights (baring the occasional bed wetting!) but what we discovered is that she is distracted incredibly easily by anything that she can see. Turns out she needs total darkness so that she can’t see anything to play with, and white noise or a story playing in the background.  Also a very solid routine of teeth brushing, picking pyjamas and a bedtime story :”starting (almost) the exact same time every night before bed.

On Autotrader, slap bang in the middle of my current budget and needs apparently.  What I don’t understand is that in the £5000-6000 range, every car seems to be battered, stolen, imported or stink like dogs and have no service history. And yet for my equally battered but low mileage and well serviced car I can only get around £1700?? What is going on at the moment? The second hand car market is a joke!
