I’ve always found the fastest way to kill such nonsense is to use the young uns lingo. Kids want to rebel when told no - so we flip or & embrace it until the fad passes. Was same a couple years ago with skibidy toilet crap… We’ve embraced it in our house, I got 6/7 teeshirts & Gen Alpha phrase Ts off Temu. No cap. Did the school pickup in it, pretty much killed it dead in the water 🤣🤣 The 5yo still finds the whole 6/7 thing amusing - but doesn’t say it a dozen times a day, while the 9&11yos think it’s cringe now 🤣🤣

I feel incredibly old because I keep seeing this mentioned but have never heard it "in the wild" or seen it on video even. Don't even get it. I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's probably just as funny as the shit people my age found funny as kids in the 90s though. As in, zero fucking sense, but that's kind of the point.  At one point in 1998/99 (can't remember exactly) me and a few mates drove teachers mental because we found mentioning cress hilarious for a good few months. Kudos to anyone who can work out why.

Genuinely think they solely caused the precipitous decline in the popularity of cress. It was ubiquitous in the 90s - salads, sandwiches, a random clump with any lunch until the absurdity of eating cress was cast into the light by Lee and Herring. The irony is, despite tasting of fuck all, it's actually really nutrient-dense

This is how I feel when newsreaders say “he/she was heard to use the N word.” Nope. Bollocks to you. Just say it. Don’t make me responsible for saying it in my mind. You’re quoting someone, not using it in a derogatory sense. Just own it. You’re supposed to be reporting what was said impartially.
View on Reddit #75016458

turtleship_2006@reddit

They (supposedly) do it to get passed filters and stuff. Even if it's officially allowed and the whole video doesn't get taken down, there are loads of examples of big platforms shadow banning creators for talking about certain topics, limiting reach etc.

Yeah all of this censoring on platforms that allow you to say the word needs to stop. Don’t get me started on the word grape. I find it’s disrespectful to victims to censor words like that, they had to go through it, you can read the word. It isn’t supposed to be comfortable.
View on Reddit #74843093

Anklehateisin@reddit

2026 is the year of the big grape.
View on Reddit #74861414

WolfAvonian@reddit

The thing with this is that I can appreciate that people are using platforms that will potentially take down their videos for using the actual words, but there's still better ways to do it. You can describe or imply something without using the exact words and unalived and grape just sound spectacularly immature and insincere. Just spend 10 seconds to think of a way to adapt your writing instead of trivialising serious matters with these dumb childish solutions or find another platform instead. Even bleeping most of the word out doesn't make it sound goofy like these words Otherwise it's clearly just about the "content" and not about taking whatever you're discussing seriously.

Language evolves. No need to cry about it. 10 years from now children will be speaking an entirely different form of colloquialism which will continue to evolve. But getting so angry at young people for expressing themselves in the way that feels most authentic to them seems strange.
View on Reddit #74831709

dlrowrevo@reddit

Can’t agree more with this. Quite surprised to see so many people shitting on MLE. It’s totally fair to dislike an accent but to describe those speaking MLE as uneducated and embarrassing is quite bizarre, especially as it is, literally, multi-cultural English. Like you say, language evolves. That’s the best thing about it. You can watch words take on completely new meanings and hear how words are used differently depending on where you are in the country. Language is really interesting and I’m surprised so many people are so… aggressive towards it……..

Yeah, I've worked for various businesses over the years. The number of times there has been a "refresh" of company branding/values (usually because new owners or a few new staff come in) it gets used. I have visions of a load of consultants sitting in a room and it comes up on a PowerPoint presentation. It then gets added to everyone's "toolkit". It's like how "from the ground up", "esoteric", "hollistic", "reach out", "rollout", "challenges/challenging", "lean", "agile", "no need to reinvent the wheel"....all started getting added to corporate comms.

It does not, but I left it on as it improves Reddit's readability. I can still see the word as I type it in the box, then it's gone as soon as I hit save. All I see from your comment is ‘’. (I checked in a private browser window to make sure you didn't just write ‘’.)

You got downvotes because everyone hates it, but I get it. The first time I saw it, it was kinda funny. It was a low tier meme where someone goes "how old were you when you found out (something or other)" and the reply was "I was today years old". And once that'd circulated, people started using it constantly and it became overused and extremely cringeworthy and tiring

I think they're referring to that fact that it doesn't mean lying/contradicting, but doing those things with the specific intention to make the other person wonder if they're going mad. People often don't use it this way, but this is where the term originated, since it came from the eponymous film.

View on Reddit #74826721

Noon_Specialist@reddit

If it's a meaningless word, why are you offended by it? Wherever you are on the political spectrum, it's used to identify political correctness. What connotations come with that is where people's views diverge. The left sees it as progressive, inclusive, and generating awareness, whereas the centre and the right see it as oversensitivity and pushing agendas/beliefs. It's responses like yours that make me think it's a very effective word as it clearly holds enough weight to start conversation. Isn't conversation something we need more of now that politics are becoming evermore extreme?
View on Reddit #74828142

pajamakitten@reddit

It does not start a conversation, it ends it. It is used to dismiss real issues by people who do not want a discussion about the issue at hand, they just want people to agree with them and for it to be acceptable to be discriminatory again.

Staycations aren't about being a tourist in your own town, they're more take time off work and chill at home. It's a 1980s term which was used predominantly in the LGBTQ community. RuPaul's Drag Race happened in stone 2010, which exposed everybody else to these phrases (there's a few more, including "It's giving....", which is also in these comments).

It's often used to describe something that is like something but it also describes a feeling or mood. View on Reddit #74820048

Controversial but I find it funny when people get upset at ‘literally’, personally I think it marks the evolution of English. It’s an intensifier/hyperbole/filler term. It’s a new use of language, although I do find some types overuse it.
View on Reddit #74822483

First_Report6445@reddit

So what word is used for "literally"? Language is for communication.
View on Reddit #74845318

pajamakitten@reddit

And if you cannot tell if it is being used to mean literally or figuratively then that might say something about you.
View on Reddit #74855248

If that were the case, then it would be meaningless, and thus add nothing to the sentence. Language is about communication, not just simplistic noises.
View on Reddit #74864748

geejaytee@reddit

I agree with most of that except the new use of language - it's beginning to predominate, but the figurative sense originally arose in the 18th century.

View on Reddit #74847936

blackcurrantcat@reddit

I agree, and they’re not always wrong when they use it and it can be funny but not everything that is what they imagined it would be is “literally” literal. It doesn’t mean a lot or exactly what someone thought. Like “that necklace is really wintery” “that is literally so true”.

That's not the meaning people want to get across though. If someone says "I literally exploded with joy" they're saying how joyful they are, not clarifying it's a figure of speech. "Totally" or "completely" would be a belter alternative.

I think this might be the first time I am seeing anyone on Reddit bring this up and I cannot agree any more. I have thought this all through 2024 and 2025. It hasn't suddenly become over-developed or massively improved in the last few years. Someone has just hopped on the bandwagon, and now all of the big tech firms are using it as a buzzword to add 10% more value to their product. For people using AI to write emails out has not been impossible. There were chat bots that were exactly the same as ChatGPT before, but then it was rebranded and had lots of money pumped into it for it to just be seen. People claiming that AI can be used to alter video footage and falsify events or what people are saying... This is not new tech. This has been around for a while, but people have only just hopped on the bandwagon. And, if you can't tell AI apart from true media, that's a you problem. There are distinct, telltale signs and I think when people start to cotton onto what they are, AI being used to alter media will lose traction. Sorry, I couldn't agree with you more. And, people talking about AI as if it's revolutionised the world in the last two years drives me crazy.

I agree with most of this, but: >people talking about AI as if it's revolutionised the world in the last two years Well, the application of AI to business processes and people's workflows has changed things lots - and the ease of accessing it is only going to keep changing things (for the moment anyway).
View on Reddit #74841629

MeltingChocolateAhh@reddit

People's workflows? Ok, for example, using ChatGPT to write out my email. That's been around for many, many years and I don't know how people have only just caught on to it. This isn't new technology. Yorue right that in the last couple of years, it has made life easier but like I say, this is nothing new
View on Reddit #74849744

edfosho1@reddit

So what if it isn't new technology? It's got to the point that tons more people are using it - that's the drastic change. I know the tech has been around for ages, but it's now that it's put in our faces and people are discovering how useful it can be.

Reading anything on social media that’s been posted by the younger generation, hurts my brain. They just talk in buzzwords now.
View on Reddit #74819872

beernon@reddit

Younger generations are developing a sort of ADHD-adjacent disorder from their addiction to short form video platforms, as well as a general lack of exposure to the world in the traditional sense. I’m watching it in my little brother and it’s depressing, it’s a slow crisis brewing in the background. We’ve created and really finessed the “junk food” model of media and it’s rotting us from the inside.

View on Reddit #74851497

Kelsiersdaggers@reddit

Call it whatever you like, I can only judge on the impact apps lol Facebook reels and YouTube shorts have had on older people I know. They lack the critical thinking skills to question what’s real and not, get whipped up into a frenzy over clearly fake social media posts about immigrants or trans people, can’t discern what is AI and what isn’t. The teenagers say silly things they heard online. News flash, we all did that. I’m not arguing this short form video content isn’t damaging I’m arguing the older people who taught us not to believe everything we seen on tv didn’t apply that lesson to their social media feed. But sure, old people bashing.

Dear _ShredBundy, I write today in hope I find you well. Things back at home are normal and mundane. I wanted to share that I, too, long for the communique standards of yesteryear, in which one was freer to express oneself with the fullest regard and respect for that our mother tongue, the King’s English. Festooned as they are with nonsequitors and base cant the likes of which one might hear in a den of iniquity, it is a wonder indeed they manage to navigate polite society. Warmest Regards, Funfun151

Me neither, my friend who is nearing 40 used it the other day really loudly in public to describe a man she liked 😳 She did something similar last year with another word she’d recently discovered and I made her explain what it meant. I used to work on a helpline where people called in for information on employment rights. They'd tell you their story, often full of this word. There was a short spell when my colleague and I kept a tally for a laugh. In one call I heard it 20+ times - I forget the exact number. The funny thing is, what they're explaining isn't obvious at all. In one call, a guy said he'd received an accidental bonus of £10,000 when he knew he was supposed to get £1,000. Payroll brought it up with him a week later, saying he needs to pay £9K back. "They said they wanted it back, but obviously I'd already spent most of it". How is that obvious? It's the opposite of what any sensible person would choose to do!

I would like it very much if people stopped beginning written sentences with, “So,…” It doesn’t bother me in spoken English, it’s a sort of hesitation indicator; however, it annoys me whenever I see it written and brings about antagonistic feelings, even if the overall sentiment of the post is perfectly reasonable. For example, a post stating, “So, this year I really hope we do more to protect our oceans” would for the briefest moment have me thinking about buying more single use plastics. For the record I don’t act on those impulses, I just suppress and hope someone creates a post like this where I can let it out.

I spend 0% of my time with kids, so 100% of my encounters with 6-7 have been older people saying how annoying it is. Ergo, all of the annoyance I feel towards 6-7 is actually created by people saying it's annoying.

Xslop. Getting bored of the word slop being tagged onto the end of anything to signify it being bad. CapeSlop (superhero movies) ShonenSlop (manga/anime) HetSlop (NGL, no idea what this one means, and the poster was hyper aggressive so I was too scared to ask). But yeah. Already sick of it.
