Hope so. Seems a lovely bloke. Like most British metal icons. There's a great Andy Edwards podcast just with Bryan where he talks about a young obsessive Lars Ulrich coming to stay with him before Metallica got big

Are GCSE’s as serious for your life as the teachers say they are?

They're a significant first step into adult life. I was sick of school at 16, & I f***ed up my O levels, then my A levels, then dropped out of a one year course, then signed on & it took me years to even vaguely sort my life out - I think I became acclimatised to failure & to the inevitability of letting myself down. So basically don't let yourself get used to that. Keep moving forward & pushing yourself. Acclimatise to pushing yourself & achieving goals.

Is it necessary for a teenager to avoid dressing head to toe in athletic clothes like a whole set?

It's important not to display any sign of individual identity unless you get noticed. Mass-produced light grey sportswear will help camouflage you against London's timid drabness.

Crockett & Jones really do exemplify the Terry Pratchett 'value of good boots' thing. My oldest pair I bought in 2004 & they still look good & are very comfortable. My other pairs are around 10 years old & look almost new.

I once had to sit & listen to a barber telling me how once a year he'd meet up in Thailand with his friends from all over the Europe and they'd sit around with Thai women on their laps who - & I quote - "were 21 but looked 12..." I don't think they were 21. This was about 30 years ago. I hope the old, fat fuck is long dead.

Egypt. Everyone had their hand out for baksheesh. I think Egyptians have noticed Western tourists don't give a fuck about them, & are only there for the pre-Islamic stuff out in the desert.

Is the British tendency towards modesty and self-deprecation damaging?

Posted by Relaxing_Cat@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 20 comments

PiotrGreenholz01@reddit

I think you have a point. There's a risk it can become an internalised tall poppy syndrome & hold people back. Modesty is fine. Self-deprecation - which I'm guilty of - can be infuriating. And, if you're working class, I think it is debilitating because the system isn't going to help you much. You have to have solid self--belief to rise. Even the performative self-deprecation that is often socially & culturally appreciated can undermine that

His son Archie was a very talented actor who starred in So Awkward, a CBBC comedy. I watched it with my kid & it was a real bonding experience for us , laughing at the same stuff. It was a shock when he suddenly died.

PiotrGreenholz01@reddit

There are plenty of areas that aren't at all posh. But there are some insanely big houses hidden behind big hedges. Also great leafy avenues. It's also a strangely boring town considering the wealth there.

I once ate an entire yellow sticker cheesecake for 4 that was reduced to 60p from £5. I wolfed it down as its final minutes of safe eating ticked by. I would probably have felt less ill if I'd eaten some of it beyond its best before date, or just eaten half, but you've got to get your money's worth.

What was takeaway coffee culture like in the 1980s-2000s?

Posted by Visual_Mirror_963@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 115 comments

PiotrGreenholz01@reddit

I can just about remember big takeout coffees from sandwich places in London in the early 2000s, but they were impractical & crap & nothing like what we have now. So, yeah, not really a culture of takeaway coffee in any meaningful way. Just sugary brown liquid to wash down the crappy bread roll with.

PiotrGreenholz01@reddit

I'm 55 & don't feel old. I've realised I still buy books as if I'm preparing for life. I'll never read all of them. I just can't get it into my head that, with my particular health issue, it could be all over in a couple of years. I still don't feel old though.

I went to coffee places in Soho & in Manchester in the early 90s, before Friends arrived. The idea was already seeping over from the US. A couple of big sofas, big cups, chocolate powder on 'frothy coffee'. The coffee wasn't particularly good.

What decision in your 30s had the biggest positive impact on your life?

PiotrGreenholz01@reddit

I had about 3 separate year long bouts of taking them in my early 30s, and by about 37, I'd moved beyond the miserable depression of teenage years & 20s. So I haven't been on them for over 10 years or so. But I feel there was Before Antidepressants & After Antidepressants, and I'm still holding it together with the knowledge of how dark things can be.
