For those who work in theatre and film in the UK, who is generally not a nice person to work with?
Posted by Sad_Ideal_2099@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1152 comments
Despite reading my fair share of positive anecdotes about him over the years and even knowing a couple people who had a good experience with working with him. Kate Beckinsale has recently brought to light that her ex partner Michael Sheen is (or at least used to be) not a very good person behind closed doors. After I shared what she said elsewhere others told me it’s well known in the UK industry that he’s total arrogant a hole. Which wouldn’t have surprised me today given the horrible things she said he allegedly did to her but two years ago it definitely would have.
On a happier note, I ran into someone last December who has been a good acquaintance of David Tennant for about 6 or so years. I said to them the only I want to know about him is that he is a decent guy, and thankfully the answer was yes. Side note: me and this person happened to be in the VIP lounge of the charity event David Tennant was participating in along with other big British celebs. David was the only one of these celebs to say hi and take pictures with the VIP guests. Which he was in no way entitled to do but did so anyway.
Competitive_Clock653@reddit
Friends with many people in the London stage/production crew scene at comedy venues who tell me that James Acaster and Nish Kumar are horrible to work for. Tantrums, demands, bad manners, clicking their fingers at people, that kind of shit. Also heard from three different unrelated people that Bruce Forsyth was a total dick off-camera.
approvedfauxmoiuser@reddit
No one wants to hear that about nish and James, they’re worshipped here.
Competitive_Clock653@reddit
It's great that they've managed to commodify their own neuroticism but it's something best enjoyed from a distance.
Candid-Engineer-6926@reddit
They both seem kind of nuts so this doesn’t surprise me
Sufficient_Soup_2504@reddit
When l was younger l had a guided tour around the BBC. Bruce was rehearsing the Generation Game and he was shouting and swearing at staff as something wasn’t right!
ClimoCustomGuitars@reddit
Brucey had 4 wives... You don't get that many divorces without being a bit difficult
ShortGirlUK@reddit
This will surprise many but Paul O’Grady definitely wasn’t as lovely off screen as he was on the TV!
approvedfauxmoiuser@reddit
Basically the same people that Reddit hates because other Redditors hate them.
gjs78@reddit
Not actually in the industry, but I used to book David Baddiel’s holidays for a short period of time, but every single interaction with him was a nightmare, as he would quibble over every last detail. Once booked a villa for him in the height of summer that was then heavily discounted for a much quieter time of year. He demanded we match the price, and then threw all his toys out the pram when I explained that we couldn’t. Another time called me directly to complain that his room hadn’t been cleaned after he’d forgotten to take the do not disturb sign of his door.
Also booked Paul Merton. He was a miserable grumpy fucker, but his wife Suki Webster was painful. She once made me try to get a posh hotel in Amsterdam to close an area of their restaurant, so they could enjoy their Christmas Day dinner in peace, as she reckon Paul wouldn’t be left alone otherwise. When I called the concierge, it took me 10 minutes to explain who he was…
Allegris_Miserere@reddit
I genuinely think David Baddiel is the single most odious person i have ever seen
approvedfauxmoiuser@reddit
More than actual sex offenders? Or is this the miserable internet thing where we act like celebrities are the worst because you want to follow the crowd.
Few_Wolf_4634@reddit
My old boss was at uni with Baddiel. He was a c u n t then too.
Hammer-Rammer@reddit
David Baddiel and Frank Skinner are both royal twats. My uncle is a retired TV production engineer veteran and he says they were both insufferable numpties. Especially Frank Skinner. Neither of them are funny. No idea how they haven't starved to death.
Rude-Possibility4682@reddit
I've met Frank Skinner a couple of times, and while he doesn't suffer idiots gladly, when I've met him, he's been an absolute gent. I think everyone has their bad days, and times when they want to be left alone.
sunlitupland5@reddit
Since getting sober I think Frank Skinner has admitted to being a bit of an arse in his younger days.
EmotionalSearch9707@reddit
He stopped the drinking pre - fame.
Hammer-Rammer@reddit
Some people are entitled nobs when they think nobody is looking or paying attention. My uncle worked with every sporting legend, commentator and presenter of the last 30-40 years. He singled out Frank Skinner as a ungrateful, entitled, unfunny nob end. many times to me. He told me about Andy Grey and Richard Keyes years before those guys got embroiled in scandals against women.
Rude-Possibility4682@reddit
Maybe your uncle was one of those fools that Frank doesn't suffer.
Hammer-Rammer@reddit
Uncle is a senior engineer who accomplished a whole lot more than Skinner ever will in his pathetic life. My uncle worked for a living. I'm sure Skinner "suffered" him the same way he'd suffer a Taxi Driver or a plumber.
Rude-Possibility4682@reddit
I'm sure there are people in the industry who say your uncle's is an awful person to work with. I'm going on about that when I met him twice, he was genuinely nice, chatty and likeable. One of those was setting up a book signing for him, so it wasn't a brief encounter. The other was helping out at a theatre backstage for one of his tours. Your info is secondhand, so I don't judge people on what others say about them, I only go off what I have witnessed
Hammer-Rammer@reddit
Uncle is a well liked union man with many friends. You don't get work in TV production if you aren't liked. It's effectively a career death sentence if you fall out with the wrong person. Yes, the information is second hand, and if you don't like it that's too bad as it's true whether you wish it or not. Journalists protect their sources all the time. It's standard practice my man.
The_Walkin_Dude1@reddit
I mean you are not coming across particularly well also.
Hammer-Rammer@reddit
I'm not really particularly concerned about that perception.
The_Walkin_Dude1@reddit
I'm sure most of the celebs that people are calling out in this thread including frank skinner are not particularly concerned about the perception they give off also.
Hammer-Rammer@reddit
Thanks for the redundant news flash.
Leatherforleisure@reddit
Does’nt suffer fools gladly is a famously coded way of saying that someone is an unpleasant gobshite.
Rude-Possibility4682@reddit
Or doesn't like unprofessional people I would say.
Difficult_Style207@reddit
He did a corporate thing i was involved in, which must be the most boring thing ever, and he was absolutely lovely to all of us.
External-Basket6701@reddit

Hammer-Rammer@reddit

gilestowler@reddit
They somehow managed to ride both the 90s comedy boom and the 90s lad culture boom to stardom despite not being funny and not being "lads." they seemed to just sit there and go "whey! Isn't football great! Because we're lads!" and the kind of twats who started trying to act like they'd led a gritty working class life after hearing Oasis for the first time lapped that shit up.
Hammer-Rammer@reddit
Totally agree. They lack any talent whatsoever. Pair of out of touch jobbers.
dbxp@reddit
Was this back in Skinner's alcoholic days?
fannyfox@reddit
He hasn’t drunk since 1986 so I doubt it.
Hammer-Rammer@reddit
I would prefer him to drink if it would mean he becomes funny, if he ever was. Maybe he should start drinking again.
Hammer-Rammer@reddit
1990-2002 period
happyhippohats@reddit
That's interesting, I've never heard anything negative about Skinner before (unlike Baddiel who seems to be widely regarded as a bit of a knob).
Regardless Skinner was certainly funny back in the day imo. Even more recently he was pretty fun to watch on Taskmaster.
VeryThicknLong@reddit
Inclined to agree. I remember Noel Gallagher was a guest on Frank Skinner’s show a long time ago, and ok, some people think Noel’s a tw@t, he genuinely is just quite honest. Anyway, Noel totally out-witted, out-paced, and left Frank cowering and quiet in the corner. Noel got more laughs out of the audience than Frank had ever got.

No one in the Netherlands knows who Paul Merton is unless they're a fan of Have I Got News For You. Source, am Dutch.
Muted_Jello_7628@reddit
I don't think many people would give him much of a second look here really. UK.
zephyrthewonderdog@reddit
Paul Merton was once hospitalised at a psychiatric hospital due to having a breakdown. He complained to one of the psychiatrists that other patients kept staring at him and following him around.
The psychiatrist asked why did he think people were staring at him. Paul replied because they had probably seen him on the television. The psychiatrist asked ‘who do you think you were on the television?’ Then wrote it in his notes.
Paul actually tells that story himself.
Barty_Crouch_Jnr@reddit
Wikipedia suggests that his time in a psychiatric hospital was before HIGNFY, so the nurse may well have been justified here.
zephyrthewonderdog@reddit
‘Whose line is it anyway?’ The show ran mid eighties if I remember correctly. It was fairly big at the time and Merton was a regular.
Barty_Crouch_Jnr@reddit
Honestly I wasn’t around back then so if he was already well known then fair enough
Much_Winter2202@reddit
Maria Bamford has a story where she's doing intake at a facility and they googled her on their phone as she was talking (a little rude) because they didn't know who she was and she was describing things like "I'm a famous touring comedian and the stress is getting to me"
Grunn84@reddit
I would only because him and my dad could be twins, I can't imagine anyone bothering Paul Merton in public, and I like Paul Merton.
Escapedtothecountry@reddit
I sat next to him in a theatre watching Noises Off with my child and on the way out I did say to him that his documentary on slapstick years ago had opened my eyes to how funny it could be, and he then talked to my child about the play and their love of The Play That Went Wrong. He wasn’t exactly fizzing but perfectly polite and didn’t give off the vibes of someone who was constantly bothered by people. (I generally don’t talk to random celebs I see about the place but this felt so relevant and my inner star struck teenage me couldn’t be sat on.)
happyhippohats@reddit
He's not really my type to be fair
limpingdba@reddit
Most people in the UK would be actively trying to avoid him if anything. He's not exactly an approachable kinda guy. Sarcastic arsehole vibes.
Environmental_Base_3@reddit
And then even wouldn't look twice when you run into him in the street. Source: I am Dutch and live in the UK!
Ok-Swan1152@reddit
I live in the UK too and yeah I would never notice him on the street.
UnderHisEye1411@reddit
Was Baddiel in blackface when he was being a knobhead to you?
I can also confirm that Paul Merton is a helmet.
Perfect-Reading-761@reddit
I met Ian Hislop in Cheltenham during the literature festival and he was a delight!
Dull-Huckleberry-122@reddit
Can absolutely second this. We were queuing in the rain for the tennis at the London Olympics - he was immediately in front of us and remarked on our ponchos - the hideous cheap plastic ones. He 'was envious' because they were having to struggle with a brolly as well as all their stuff. Ended up chatting to him for ages. Thoroughly nice bloke. And very funny.
OrangeChevron@reddit
Thank goodness! Love him
Limitedtugboat@reddit
Hislop seems to be universally loved from what I hear.
Especially around the PO scandal times, it was pointed out on HIGNFY that Private Eye had been running the story for a long while before hand.
ThunderChild247@reddit
One thing that made me respect Hislop a lot was that when the PO scandal really hit the headlines and people were crediting Private Eye for being on it early, he always acknowledged firstly the work of his journalists (taking little to no credit himself) but also pointed out that their attention to the story came from the work of the computer magazine that first carried the story.
He’s always so quick to divert praise from himself onto others.
realhumanben@reddit
Im close to someone who worked with him during a book signing event once and he was extremely demanding and unpleasant to the bookshop staff (even in front of customers). Vile man.
claudiafaceoff@reddit
As a child my family once stayed in the adjoining house to him on holiday in Cornwall and he had such an aura of hostility about him that we didn’t even dare to say hi, even the way you would with a non-famous neighbour while both sitting on adjoining patios.
gjs78@reddit
I probably booked that for him…😂
claudiafaceoff@reddit
Haha amazing! It would have been in the late 90s/early 2000s, and it was a beachfront house on Porthmeor Beach in St Ives.
Outside-Parfait-8935@reddit
Watching David Baddiel on Taskmaster was difficult. He was so incredibly annoying
dl064@reddit
In a similar way to how him being a grumpy sod doesn't actually surprise or necessarily even disappoint me, Dylan Moran was a barfly at my friend's pub in Edinburgh when he lived there, and was exactly this.
lungbong@reddit
The Newman and Baddiel tour, 3 Lions and Fantasy Football League made Baddiel very well known but I think it changed him, a friend worked with him back in The Mary Whitehouse Experience days and then much later after 3 Lions and said he was very different.
On the opposite side I once had the pleasure to work with Carol Lee Scott, better known as Grotbags. We'd booked her for an event and I was the one assigned to make sure she was in the right place at the right time and ensure she knew what was going on. She was absolutely lovely, she arrived early and got into costume early so she could meet some of the kids. She made sure everyone who wanted an autograph or photo got one, no complaints, no demands and she seemed to thoroughly enjoy herself.
Strict_Candle_4666@reddit
To be fair to David Baddiel, I don't think there us much wrong with trying to get the best deal. If he'd been rude to à fan, that would be worse.
ButterscotchBest8866@reddit
Can’t stand Baddiel
gpc88@reddit
I’d highly recommend Tom Rosenthals stand up show - spoiler - Baddiel doesn’t come out smell of roses
Ohtherewearethen@reddit
I've not been able to stand this arse after watching an episode of Baddiel and Skinner. An audience member asked a question, as they were encouraged to do, and instead of answering it, he humiliated her by saying how dreadful she looked and he wouldn't leave the house if he looked like her. Absolutely disgraceful and he can fuck all the way off.
mothsugar@reddit
I understand Frank Skinner is really highly respected in comedy circles for being an all-round good egg and actively helping new comedians out
DoctorWhofan789eywim@reddit
I've never liked Baddiel since the Jason Lee thing. The 'apology' video he made with Lee was one of the most insincere, self serving things I've ever seen. Not an iota of genuine remorse. Just 'look at me apologising in public on video aren't I a good person also please buy my book that's coincidentally out at the same time please'.
dl064@reddit
Paul Merton is an example of
dbxp@reddit
I'm surprised about Baddiel, he doesn't seem famous enough to get away with the whole Diva thing
Much_Winter2202@reddit
He does seem neurotic, though
For people with a certain kind of personality they just need to book things themselves they will never believe even a competent assistant got it right
I was an assistant for a guy once who had another FT assistant. I booked his flight fine, changed his hotel, everything was fine. He couldn't cope with it being fine and made me research the type of plane, too. (Like 737 vs 747) I had to do like a report on the plane it was crazy
m1ndwipe@reddit
It's always mid to lower tier celebs that are the worse. More famous people tend to be nicer, if nothing else because word gets around if they behave like entitled dicks.
happyhippohats@reddit
Back in the early '90s Rob Newman and David Baddiel were arguably the biggest comedy act in the country and the first to ever sell out Wembley Arena...
Arnoave@reddit
Oh he definitely thinks he is though, and that's all you really need
TheNewHobbes@reddit
The Newman and Baddiel tour was the biggest uk comedy tour ever at the time by a huge margin. They were the biggest British comedians of the 90s.
ReputationApart5983@reddit
At one point during the 90s he was very recognisable because of his chat show and having a number one single with that world cup song. He probably still thinks hes that big of a star.
EquivalentMap8477@reddit
He also did black face in the 90's to mock a black footballer and only did a half arsed apology when he did program about racism
gjs78@reddit
I wouldn’t call it being a diva, more just being a 🔔 🔚
Inside_no_9@reddit
I was once at a head stall in Camden market, and Paul Merton asked if they had any electric bongs left. They’d sold out. He was ok with it.
queen_naga@reddit
He was such a knob. For anonymity I’ll say, a friend of mine was a student who presented at a holocaust memorial event and he was so horrible to them for no reason. Total c*nt and I love s9 of taskmaster but I can’t believe they tolerated him
pusopdiro@reddit
Is booking holidays for celebrities its own job? I had just assumed they'd have individual assistants if they weren't doing it themselves (not trying to be rude, just interested)
CourtneyLush@reddit
There's all sorts of services that are tailored for high profile individuals. My SIL runs a company that does that.
behemuffin@reddit
I worked for years on touring shows, mainly comedy. I'm not going to say anything about any of the artists I've worked with, other than that most of them are fantastic, and nearly all of them have some sort of demons in their past or present - seems to be part and parcel of being a solo performer.
I will say that I've given up listening to anyone else's opinion on who is or isn't nice to work with. On the touring circuit you often follow a similar itinerary to other comedians, and you hear all sorts of stuff about them from venue staff. I lose count of the number of times I've heard, for example, that Russell Howard is a massive bellend, but Jimmy Carr couldn't be nicer, only to hear at the next venue that Jimmy was a twat, and Russell the perfect gentleman. Everyone has good days and bad, everyone has people they do and don't get on with.
Cilla Black does seem to have been universally loathed, though.
BillWilberforce@reddit
James Corden is universally loathed as well.
approvedfauxmoiuser@reddit
On the internet, he’s loved in real.
It’s a Reddit bubble.
ohdearnia@reddit
I have a family member who is a driver for actors, he said James Cordon once said "Barbara Streisand wouldn't have to put up with this shit" when something wasn't going his way.
Also Michael Sheen screamed at someone on set until she cried.
biscuit-revolution@reddit
Oh no! I have such a crush on Michael Sheen. If he is horrible then it takes all his charisma away.
gowcog@reddit
Kate Beckinsale has pretty much outed him as being utterly loathsome to her when they were married and he sure gets through wives .
GAdvance@reddit
The Barbara Streisand line is arguably the funniest thing he's ever come up with to be fair
ImpressiveStorm8914@reddit
So he finally managed to make one funny joke. Good for him.
AlecMac2001@reddit
"Barbara Streisand wouldn't have to put up with this shit" is very funny, If I was working for someone who said this I'd love it.
queen_naga@reddit
That explains why he’s hosting pointless now. I remember rylan saying that he was always nice as he started as a runner and knew they’d always be producers. Yet he’s besties with Scott mills. Who knows
Unearthingthepast@reddit
But how long has he been "besties£ with Scott Mills though, if you get my drift?
seatemperature11215@reddit
Does him and Scott Mills mean something? Because i don't get it 🤔
BillWilberforce@reddit
Scott Mills has been fired from BBC Radio 2. As the BBC had been aware for over a year that he had been arrested for sexual assault on a boy under 16. So anybody who was besties with him, is tainted.
seatemperature11215@reddit
Thank you.

Michael Sheen?

Ph0sFyre@reddit
Can confirm, spoke with him on the phone around 2015 and he was a complete entitled bellend.
yepsothisismyname@reddit
Isn't that just in the public (and perhaps quite Reddit-specific) mind? I wasn't aware that within the industry that was such a widely-held sentiment, but I don't immerse myself in these things either.
Rekyht@reddit
It’s impressive how much some third or fourth hand / totally unsourced anecdotes around him have shaped the discussion of a man that literally couldn’t be less relevant as a UK celebrity in 2026.
And yet, Reddit will bring him up as literal satan as if he is the most hated man in the UK.
castielsbitch@reddit
I never understood it. He was always so nice and grateful to the people of Barry when filming Gavin and Stacey, stopped for pictures and autographs, at the time of filming my Facebook was full of people who's met him and interacted with him. It's just typical Reddit being typical Reddit. You can guarantee James Cordon is the answer to these types of questions every time, karma farming.
ImpressiveStorm8914@reddit
Maybe at the time he was like that but it was also before he hit big in the States and that could have changed hm a lot. As popular as his chat show was, it could easily have blown his ego up and that seems to be when most of the anti-Corden stuff started from my perspective. Before then he was just the guy from Gavin And Stacey.
_1489555458biguy@reddit
He is and was universally loathed in High Wycombe for acting like a wanker.

the OG of the Cordon paradox. You wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire, but would happily piss over him if he wasn't.

At uni I pissed on the bed of a friend's friend who I had mutual dislike with. It was a mattress with no sheets so he probably didn't notice
Anyway. The first episode of Beef on Netflix reminded me of that

This is what I hoped to see. Never met him but don't need to.
My husband and I were on holiday in the Scottish Highlands one time, in a remote cottage - we had brought bows and arrows along to get some archery in. We bought James Corden's autobiography from a charity shop to use as a target and it brought us a lot of joy to fire arrows into his face.

My partner meets a lot of celebs because of her role at one of the major art galleries in London. She met Corden recently at an event and said he was really nice to work with.
seatemperature11215@reddit
Is there a particular reason for this, too? I do think many people that get to the top in their chosen profession probably share a lot of characteristics, and have to have a pretty brutal underpinning to get there.
ariadnevirginia@reddit
I assumed he'd be awful but he worked on a production I was on and he was absolutely nice and friendly with everyone.
iykyk@reddit
Every time he comes up I can’t believe I’m the only person to have had a positive Corden experience - met him when I was working security at Wimbledon in 2009 and he was great. My daughter and I met the Patton Brothers while queuing for autographs from the Chuckle Brothers (she was a small child and was a massive fan, and the live show was actually great fun). They went around the line of parents and young kids and parents waiting in the rain and chatted to and distracted them.
One of the Pattons listened very well to my daughter for about ten minutes as she told him about her story ideas in a way that only an enthusiastic eight-year-old can. "Very well" as in I could tell he was zoning out and thinking about what's for dinner sometimes, but he always managed to pull it back.
Doubt they even had to do it, TBH. It's not like getting an autograph was an official part of the ticket.

MeltingChocolateAhh@reddit
This is how I sort of look at it. And, I'm not in a line of work anything like yours.
Like, the way I see it, Jimmy Carr dodged taxes, Ant from ant and dec had an alcohol addiction, Robbie Williams loved cocaine, Amy Winehouse used to love drugs and alcohol before she died - but these don't make these people bad, they're just people who have past demons, and have paid the price for it.
This doesn't excuse pure evil that never stops from some big names out there. Some things are unforgiveable but, Jeremy Clarkson punching a reporter or Wayne Rooney assaulting someone in his angry moments? Not so bad. Don't tell me that everyone on this subreddit has never did something they have regretted or did something that they should (or maybe even have) paid for in some way and learnt a lesson the hard way.
Appropriate_Wave722@reddit
Clarkson punched a colleague (his producer) because the hotel (I stayed at the same hotel, it's nice) had closed the kitchen and could only offer a cold meat platter. Apparently he drinks at least a bottle of wine a night so this might also be relevant
Tuarangi@reddit
He punched Piers Moron as well
Puzzleheaded_Fact_65@reddit
I think we can all maybe agree with that one a bit more...
wonder181016@reddit
Oh, one more reason to hate the guy
Majestic-Marcus@reddit
It was also very shorty after his mum died, he’d had serious health scares, and was stressed from working a 70+ hour week.
And he apologised pretty much immediately.
There’s usually more to a story than man punches man.
oskarkeo@reddit
He did also racially abuse the producer and in the aftermath failed to pronounce the guys name correctly while imploring people to leave said producer alone.
He was adamant about having his beef bloody and tender and when the kitchen wouldn't allow it he made the producer bloody and tender.
totally poisoned my view of him and my willingness to watch his shows, even though I'm happy to give him credit when he acts like a non dick every once in a while.
Lots of people get divorced without racebeating someone.
Twenty_Ten@reddit
Clarkson is one of those who I view as a bit of a dick, but has quite a bit of self awareness about it, and takes responsibility for his actions, even playing up to it sometimes. Watching Clarkson's Farm, his colleagues and friends do keep him honest sometimes and he accepts it.
Wouldn't mind a pint or two with him to be fair.
gpc88@reddit
I still reckon that producer must of been dangling that as a carrot - like “one more take and we’ll hit up the hotel for a nice meal and a few beers”.
Cause he’s a bit of a moron but you don’t just punch someone unrelated over a lack of a hot meal… I mean he’s filmed all round the world, did farming (yes yes all sort of showbiz but let’s be honest there were always easier options available than what he’s taken). Just seemed so random, not defending it - it’s 100% a fireable offence, we’d all expect the same treatment…. But just weird
ariadnevirginia@reddit
I knew the sound guy on that show and Clarkson stayed drinking at a pub on location , keeping a helicopter which was supposed to take them back to the hotel waiting at astronomical costs.
When he got back to the hotel he was already drunk.

I think they’ve picked up on the fact some guy who worked with the production, provided vehicles I believe, in America or Canada has said he had an interaction with the same person and would have happily punched them. And just taken it. Which as you say isn’t what anyone else is saying. From what James May said, IIRC, it was actually over lack of hot food for the whole crew after a very long day. So the comment about the talent seems to be off as well.
WeDoingThisAgainRWe@reddit
If we’re talking relevant I’d suggest being told he potentially had tongue cancer a few days before, going through a divorce at the time and it not being long after his mother died would be pretty relevant.
Despite which he reported himself and has always said it was his fault entirely. So it seems he does at least know he was out of order and hasn’t tried to turn it onto the producer.
souldawg@reddit
Worked with Clarkson, and if he's not the worst. Hammond is far more vile IRL. With Clarkson most of it is a persona, unless you don't do the work and are corrected multiple times without acting on the feedback - then he can be a proper c***. Hammond acts nice, but then learns what he can about you and makes very personal snips to hurt you, some of his friends, after it happened to me, told me it's normal and that they refer to him as a snake in the grass - lying in wait until he sees a vulnerable moment to pounce.
MirrorTotal893@reddit

Alcohol doesn't excuse bad behaviour
PiotrGreenholz01@reddit
Lol, who told you that??
Appropriate_Wave722@reddit
not at all. In fact if a drunk person punches a sober acquaintance, then it adds weight to the argument that "the drunk person was in the wrong."
reggieko13@reddit
Driving under influence does make him scum
stiggley@reddit
He could have been like other drunk/alcoholic celebs & journalists and employ a driver rather than driving under the influence.
MeltingChocolateAhh@reddit
That is a bad thing, yes, I don't condone in it. Does it make him a bad person forever? Maybe. What if he did do it, but regrets doing it now? Like I said, some things are completely unforgiveable (depending who you ask).
reggieko13@reddit
Doesn’t make him a bad person forever but also can’t believe only time done it
jokennate@reddit
Yeah I'm pretty reluctant to wave that one away as some sort of learning experience.
Pyriel@reddit
Piers Morgan isn't a reporter. He's scum.
One of the best things Clarkson ever did was belt him one.
MeltingChocolateAhh@reddit
If you read up the replies on this thread, someone else said assault is bad. It shows it depends who you ask.
In my eyes, it's never right to hit anybody like that. But, he paid the price for it.
Pyriel@reddit
He paid the price for punching a producer (I'm not defending that one)
Morganx27@reddit
Well he didn't, really. He continued to have a successful career and a new car show.
MeltingChocolateAhh@reddit
He did get ~~fired~~ dropped by the BBC, and had to apologise, and pay out £100k. It doesn't really need a whole career change, does it? Do you expect him to go to prison? Is he really a danger to society for a one-off incident?
It was wrong in every way. But, let's be rational.
Morganx27@reddit
Continuing to be a multimillionaire with multiple successful TV shows isn't really "paying the price". If I hit someone at work, I'd expect to have to do a lot more than give them some of the change from under my sofa cushions.
MeltingChocolateAhh@reddit
Right ok, let's just throw Jeremy into the gulag. Wow. What more do you want? It's a punch on the lip, not murder. He got dropped (not fired, understand the difference), and he had to pay £100k which would break me if I had to pay that in a settlement. He lost to the law. What more should have happened to him that wouldn't happen to anybody else?
Morganx27@reddit
I'm not suggesting he needs to be thrown in prison for the rest of his life. On the relative scale compared to his net worth though, that's the equivalent of me being told to give someone all the change that's in my pocket.
The price he paid was, at best, a bit of an inconvenience for a few months before he was offered a new TV show. If it'd been the other way round, if Jeremy's boorish idiocy led to the producer throwing the first punch, that guy would struggle to find any more work in the industry. But if it's talent punching crew, "Hey, it's a shame you lost your cushy, highly paid job. Do you want another?".
The rest of us manage to control ourselves at work. If we could hit people, be ordered to pay about 1% of our net worth and get a new, equally highly paid job a few months later there'd be busted lips up the length and breadth of the country.
gpc88@reddit
You’d probably just be fired… they (the person you hit) might sue you but financially what have they lost out on?? It’s probably affray not assault - they could press charges but your employer can only fire you…

Still blows my mind that marina Hyde was an item with him.

Clarkson was pretty racist too, the "slope on the bridge" and "eeny meany" rhyme are a couple he got away with on TV
Majestic-Marcus@reddit
He’s a shock jock. Not a racist. There’s a difference.
Tuarangi@reddit
Calling an Asian man a "slope" and using the N word is not a "shock jock" just an old timey racist not moving into the modern era.

Cilla Black was very up herself and very dismissive of people she worked with. Had no interest in being polite to the people around her.
Jimmy Carr is a twat. Can be very rude and doesn't want to listen to anyone else's opinion.
Russell Howard isn't the worst, but is another one who is very up himself.
James Corden, on the other hand, is on another level. A genuine bully. Very unpleasant, moody, angry etc.
But all of these are (were) talented and paid a lot for what they do, so that understandably breeds a level of contempt.

I work in an industry that has frequent professional contact with plenty of famouses and the same kind of conflicting rumours are always flying around.
All I know for certain is that it comes down to how professionally you treat them. If you’ve prepared in advance, communicated with their people, met the requirements, you’re putting yourself in good stead by not pissing them off on contact. If you’re actually professional and discrete instead of fawning over them, they tend to appreciate that a lot.
I try to imagine it from their side. Rushing, fussing, constant demands on your attention, all day, for weeks or months on end, you don’t need more fuss you need people to just do their damn jobs. That’s why I’m good at this stuff :)

So when I worked for a major UK airline, this story was a regular when It came to Cilla Black. Yes - she was an absolute piece of shit. On one flight she gave the crew Hell because she was traveling with Cliff Richard and he got upgraded to first class, and she didn’t. He was upgraded because he did a lot of work for the airline’s charity. She behaved like an absolute spoiled toddler, claiming to be a “star”. Also, on James Corden, I can confirm that he’s an absolute cunt.

Where she famously didn't want to live, but happy to be a "professional scouser" when it suited
Paradroid808@reddit
I grew up not a million miles from where she lived and apparently even the bin men used to complain how horrible she was.
gilestowler@reddit
I've never met her and never met anyone who has met her, so my idea of her is wholly drawn from the impression I get - I want to make that clear before someone gets mad and says that I'm making up an entire personality for her - but the impression I get is that she developed the kind of snobbery that comes from moving up through the classes and having some insecurity about it. She'd play "Our Cilla" and put on the accent on TV but apparently she spoke in a posh accent away from the cameras. I think that's why she looked down on people - deepseated insecurity about her background and her own lack of talent. It's a bit of a Hyacinth Bucket kind of thing, but more unpleasant. My mum had a bit of this - she grew up in a working class family that moved from Bootle to Brixton and she married my dad who was very middle class, and she became a massive snob, put on a fake posh accent, and looked down on everyone, and I always thought it came from insecurities. Cilla obviously pulled herself up a lot further than a middle class semi detached house in Croydon, of course, so her attitude was probably amplified. I'd say this is why people like bin men, and all the people from the area she lived in pre-fame, dislike her, because her insecurities, and being reminded where she came from, made her extra unpleasant to them.
happyhippohats@reddit
I also grew up not a million miles from where she lived.
It was the other end of the country though so we probably had different bin men.

She used to come into the local butchers my friend worked in as a Saturday job, they hated her, her car used to pull up and park on the double yellows each time and she would barge to the front of the queue wanting to be served straight away and get obnoxious if she wasn’t. My friend got so get up with this one day he went out the back, dropped his trousers and pants and rubbed her meat all around his balls and arse before packing it up and giving it to her 😅

I never liked her and didn’t watch her much, one day at the parents she was doing some studio show with the general public and her mask slipped and she just said some really nasty stuff to some poor contestant. Really? That surprises me, but I have no reason why. Was it in the way she treated people generally?
ShortGirlUK@reddit
I interacted with Cilla a few times when I worked in TV production. You’d always have to make sure there was Champagne in her dressing room.
The first time she really pissed me off because i held the door open for her at the ITV Studios. She didn’t even look at me, let alone say smile or say thank you.
Then a few years later she came onto another chat show i was working on- she was promoting a pantomime she was in. I went to her dressing room to ‘brief’ her, go through the questions etc.. I was prepared for her being vile, but she was actually very lovely. She listened to me and never gave the impression she couldn’t be bothered, which a lot of talent usually do. During my briefing I’d always remind guests to not swear and I’d always joke and say, “if you do, I’ll get the sack!” And she laughed and said something like, “oh I wouldn’t want that, you’re very good at this job.’ And that was very sweet. I forgave her for ignoring me when I held the door open for her haha.
She passed about a week before my Mum passed back in 2015. I was very emotional anyway as my mum was on end of life care, but I had a little cry over Cilla, bless her.

Especially with touring acts the stress is probably different every day. Like did the airline lose your bag vs did everything go smoothly. Also jet lag etc.
And sometimes staff are not appropriate. They'll ask people for things, or try to "joke" with them and get noticed by saying something snarky instead of just being polite and businesslike.
Afraid_Firefighter63@reddit
It's funny you mention Jimmy Carr, because he's the only performer I've witnessed personally stopping by backstage to check in with his touring crew and ask how their day has been. I've respected him a bit more ever since.
Vequihellin@reddit
Back when she was hosting Blind Date, I remember being really uncomfortable with the way she spoke to or about people on set. She'd make 'funny' comments about contestants that the 'studio audience' would laugh along to and I remember thinking her comments were nasty, not funny. She'd say 'funny' things about people's skin or hair or make unkind comments about their appearance. I just remember really disliking it. I'm not even remotely surprised that she was a bitch behind closed doors.

None of it fazed him- laughed and smiled with everybody, took all the pictures people wanted and remained a gent the entire time. I wouldn’t blame the man for saying ‘I just wanted to grab a coffee, leave me alone’, but there wasn’t a single hint of thT
Snoo_5552@reddit
I met both of them in the same night once. Tennant - surprisingly tall, very engaging. Sheen - much less interested, standoffish. So I’d say that’s about right!

Jason Manford is a gentleman.
Alfie Boe is a bit standoffish but warms up when you get to know him. Says he should be pure opera, voice is too good for commercial stuff.
Dawn French is an arse
jokennate@reddit
You know, I hadn't really though about it until a certain James Acaster routine, but he really is worldwide famous. Like in the past you could definitely walk past a junky little souvenir shop in plenty of European cities and they'd have those cut-out eye masks and the British people would be like Queen Elizabeth, maybe then-Prince Charles, Tony Blair, and Rowan Atkinson.
dani-dee@reddit
I used a Mr Bean photo in a comment on a predominantly American Facebook group and they all started talking about how much they loved Mr Bean.. blew my mind that Mr Bean made it to the US!
rockandrollmark@reddit
I believe it’s the most syndicated television programme in the world and Atkinson has put a lot of work in to make this happen. That in turn has made him a lot of money, so I don’t really think he’s in a position to be upset about being recognisable.
AskingBoatsToSwim@reddit
I don’t think anybody really realises how weird life is after you’re so well known that you aren’t left alone anywhere you go, ever again.

I heard he blocked Mr Bean from being shown in Italy as he loves the place and it means he can be anonymous there.
Competitive-Eagle657@reddit
He delayed it for a few years, supposedly, but Mr Bean is huge in Italy, they are big slapstick fans generally.
Weewoes@reddit

cragglerock93@reddit
I still love the Graham Norton Show red chair anecdote where a woman came on and said she was walking the coastal path in Cornwall or Devon (I forget which) and happened upon Dawn French taking the bins out or something and she asked French for a picture, whose response was 'get lost' lmao.
blackleydynamo@reddit
I think sometimes in the UK we don't realise how massive Mr Bean became around the world. To me Atkinson is Blackadder, never found Bean that funny, but because it's slapstick it travels incredibly well and he's huge in some really random corners of the world.
I'm sure the money's nice, and keeps him in very fancy cars, but it must wear thin not being able to have a quiet beer in a hotel in Djibouti or Vanuatu without some random demanding a selfie.
Weewoes@reddit
No language barrier too, kids and adults alike can enjoy it together. Then there is the cartoon. I watched him as a pastor in some movie called keeping mum decades ago and now its the first thing I think of when I see his name or face, I only have a vague memory of it but it was odd for sure.

I worked behind a bar at a northern theatre for a few years. So whoever was in the cast would be in for drinks at some point during the run and I always think people should be judged on how they treat hospitality staff. . Prunella Scales was absolutely lovely. Sheila Hancock was rude and arrogant
chubwhump@reddit
I once served a drink to Prunella Scales who was attending a concert hosted by my school. Star Trek documentaries are surprisingly light-hearted about the fact he didn't get on with the cast at all until the very end of the show. Absolute him and them scenario.
Top-Cat-a@reddit
I don't think Patrick Stewart is a method actor but he possibly wanted to establish the fact there is some distance between the Captain and the rest of the crew. Star Trek is to some extent the escapades of the Royal Navy in space, and the Captain of a Royal Navy vessel was most definitely somewhat aloof from the rest of the officers and crew.
I did hear that he lightened up as the show went on. It explains why Season 1 of TNG is a bit stiff and it gets better in Seasons 2/3 onwards as Patrick Stewart gets with the program
Top-Cat-a@reddit
I'm really surprised you mentioned Tom Cruise as my impression is he works hard at his public persona and the only time I've heard him being rightfully angry is at someone breaching Covid protection measures during filming of one of the Mission:Impossible moves.
I only thought he was an ass in private (as his ex-wives and girlfriends attest)
Reign_World@reddit
Sir, he is literally the head of a cult called Scientology. There is no literally no good public persona about him?
Top-Cat-a@reddit
Normally he's not only the star of the movies he's in but also funding them. As a result he expects his employees to perform. There's nothing about being a diva here, just an employer who expects results.
I'm not going to defend his personal life which I've already said is a shitshow, nor I am going to defend Scientology. However, members of the general public who've interacted with him have generally made favourable comments. His public persona is important to him as he is the most high profile representative of Scientology and its important for his career, so I believe he works hard to maintain a good public reputation.
mom0007@reddit
Since the cult teaches communication and interaction, it's not surprising that he is good at keeping his public persona but, just listening to a few people who escaped scientology and had many interactions with him the private persona is awful. Some have said he isn't aware of all the work and rules around caring for him and his family, but he is best friends with David Miscavage, which says a lot.
The treatment of Nicole Kidman at the end of their marriage was awful, and Katie Holme literally had to have a whole escape plan.
Reign_World@reddit
You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, with all due respect. He once complained about his coworker being taller than him for about 3 weeks straight.
aehii@reddit
The problem I have with these celebrity tell alls is the interpretation, i used to work at the same company as my brother and we went out once on a job (fixing atm machines). One time a guy was there, getting in the way a bit inside the room, asking questions, but it was so bland and nothing, nothing dramatic or noteworthy at all, and with every thing the guy said my brother didn't react, just umms and yeah yeahs. Then the next day my brother tells about this guy, and he makes it into so much more than it was, he wasn't lieing, he just interpreted it completely differently to me. What was innocuous and nothing became bigger, framed as though the guy was doubting my brother knowing what he was doing.
I'm sure it's insulting or just 'yeah whatever don't believe me then' for me to suggest that what you describe as 'aggressively complained' I can believe as joking around, at most passive aggressively as Cruise is a high energy guy. I can't follow the logic of anyone, less an extremely professional hard working actor at the highest status behaving so immaturely that sounds unhinged. But heh I wasn't there.
With all these tell alls, I can imagine celebrities being fed up being stopped for the 13th time that day and 158th time that week and being moody about it. But to people telling it, they're 'pieces of shit' and 'nasty pieces of work'.
Top-Cat-a@reddit
Virtually every single actor is taller than Tom Cruise, so I hightly doubt he would throw a hissy fit about his fellow actors being taller. In most of the movies he appears in he selects who he appears with so if he was that insecure he could just elect to appear with dwarves.
Adjusting for actors height differences on movie sets has been commonplace since the dawn of celluloid.
your-a-bellend@reddit
“If he was that insecure he could just elect to appear with dwarf” Haha come on mate, everyone in the world other than you know he is that insecure. He wouldn’t let Nicole Kidman wear shoes with heels because she would be taller than him.

No one has a good word to say about Michael Sheen. Neil Gaiman massively slagged him off for being a diva (and praised David Tennant for being down to earth).
David Tennant’s wife Georgia is a nightmare. Used to phone production offices of his films and scream at them for every tiny thing, things that had nothing to do with her, and that was before they were even married. She threw a massive tantrum when DT filmed “Mad to be Normal” and cussed out the producers just because they tweeted behind the scenes photos, they banned her from the set because she was so abusive, and in retaliation she exploited a contract clause which meant they couldn’t show the film at any film festivals except ones DT personally approved, which killed the film.

My_Finger_Smells_Why@reddit

I could see the arrogance oozing from him when he did that no holds barred interview on “The Assembly”. He didn’t answer a single question without spinning it. He’d make an excellent politician…not good at his job, just good at spinning crap in interviews and never answering the question.
Tennant was also a bit evasive in his session, but the one that truly shocked me was Danny Dyer. I had never liked him because of his mock hard man routine, but he was the only one of the three who was 100% open with the panel. He answered every question. He went from zero to hero during his time being grilled.

Related anecdote:
Chris Barrie once came into the restaurant I was working at with his family and they were in my section as a barman (we had separate waiters and bar staff serving the tables).
Just before they were due to settle up we had a total power outage and were unable to print off the bill. They were forced to hang around for about 2 hours while we waited for it to be sorted and while most of my tables were getting increasingly irate about it his table was absolutely lovely and didn't make a fuss at all. I recommended some cocktails (on the house) and brought some ice cream for the kids and we had a good chat while they waited. Lovely bloke.
Peter Jones from Dragon's Den was also a regular there (in the bar not the restaurant) and while he didn't really talk to me much he was a generous tipper and never rude.

coppersocks@reddit
No, he’s a professional skateboarder.
BarSalt970@reddit
My mum once met Tony Hawks and at a conference and said that I, her then teenage son, was a huge huge fan. He signed the autograph saying he was Tony Hawks, not Tony Hawk. I was embarrassed for her.

Absolutely the worst celebrity I've ever met. Was incredibly curt (we were at a stage door, traditionally where actors sign autographs) so after my friend got her autograph, I was ready to go - was totally turned off interacting with him (as he was at the time). Does a lot for charity, blah, blah, blah but my one interaction was a real downer and for a while, I even judged my friend for being a fan.
vonsnape@reddit
can confirm. was a massive fan, meeting them was crushingly disappointing. never watched another show they did again.

Ive also heard the opposite about Eddie, it seems to really depend on when you meet them and what sort of mood theyre in. I've heard other stories where theyve been really stand offish.

A mate of mine knew Michael Barrymore at the height of his fame in the late 90s. He said he used to call him up at all hours of the night while intoxicated to ask my friend to go over and have dinner with him. When my friend refused, he’d just hear him crying on the other side of the phone.
ihitrocksbottom@reddit
How did your mate know him?
ihitrocksbottom@reddit
This was so long ago but I'll mention it anyway. I used to work at a theatre in the early 00s. Some of the techies were telling me about the comedians that had performed there. I remember them saying Lee Evans was lovely but that Lenny Henry and Russell Kane were dicks.
good-night_moon@reddit
Not theatre, however, my husband worked in various music venues around the UK. Matt Berry, Ozzy, Wolf Alice, and Janelle Monae were wonderful to the crew. Apparently Matt Berry has the same cadence in person which my husband found hilarious during soundcheck. Ozzy was just an all around great guy to his crew and him which were bham based. Janelle Monae was helping set up the show even down to merch and was a big sweetheart. Some not so nice were Catfish and the Bottle men (lead singer), Taylor Momsen and Solange..basically divas with attitudes.
StrictlyInsider@reddit
I worked on Strictly for years.
I’m aware Gregg Wallace was a nightmare for some of the crew but he was before my time on it.
Of the ones I’ve encountered, Laura Whitmore wasn’t the nicest, nor was Naga Munchetty. Alexandra Burke was a little standoffish when she was on too.
But that’s going back a bit now. In more recent series the celebs have all been OK to work with (I know a few of them have scandals after being on the show but based on my time working with them on the show itself they were OK.) but some of the pros can be a bit grumpy. Namely Nadiya, Johannes, Michelle.

What were the other X Factor judges like? I'll always remember when Louis inappropriately touched Mel B live on telly, that was very creepy and good on her for calling him out on it
StrictlyInsider@reddit
Simon- interestingly he was fine- poor punctuality but fine.
Mel- I enjoyed working with her that series, she was fun. I liked her honesty.
Cheryl- there were two stints of Cheryl. She was lovely and bubbly in her first one but more closed off in her second one.
Nicole- a bit annoying and OTT, I don’t think she’d be able to name a single crew member but she wasn’t actively unpleasant.
Sharon- A bit of a chaos machine. You were always expecting the unexpected with her.
_98_98_@reddit
Thanks for sharing. I always see how nice Simon is in real life. Maybe Cheryl was closed off that series due to the cheating troubles in her marriage at the time. Nicole is a very strange lady. Dannii seemed lovely, apparently she was badly bullied by Sharon on the X Factor
StrictlyInsider@reddit
I forgot about Dannii!! She was a sweetheart.
And then a lot of the other judges were just one or two series wonders.

I was sat near him at the theatre, he had an aisle seat and wore sunglasses for the entire performance - like we couldn't notice him. Refused to interact with anybody (not sure anybody was actually interested in talking to him)
Saw Simon Pegg at a different show, wearing celeb disguise - sunglasses baseball cap, big coat, trying to look incognito, he looked very nervous. He was whisked away by the theatre manager to a VIP area.
Arrived slightly late for a show - alongside Stephen Fry and partner. Saw him at the interval, chatting, signing autographs and posing for selfies. Didn't speak to him but he seemed delightful.
ozplissken@reddit
Simon Pegg is super fancy and hangs out with the likes of Tom Cruise now, he's not for the likes of us!
Away_Arachnid_3641@reddit
It was before he got super fancy - Cornetto era. Don’t blame him not mingling - nobody likes the smell of povos 😂
ComprehensiveAd8815@reddit
Fry is a sweetheart with an immensely broad career and appeal and basks the warm glow of people, he shines. Pegg is brilliant but because of his career path has attracted a very very odd fan base, people who don’t understand privacy, spatial awareness or hygiene. I can imagine it being horrible for him, he isn’t being paid for care in the community social outreach and meet n greets with autistic swamp creatures.
I’ve seen Lindsay do that at a theatre too, he also did it at the after party for a show He WAS IN!!!!!
Sutton foster did not put up with his shenanigans!
ozplissken@reddit
Yup. Robert Lindsay once punched my ex father in-law in the face because my father in law in a clumsy attempt to be funny said to Lindsay''s brother "so what does it feel like to be a non entity?" When Lindsay found out he went crazy and thumped the ex father in law who was part of the production team on the play Lindsay doing at the time in the 80's right in the face.
Escapedtothecountry@reddit
That‘s a pretty horrible thing to say to be fair, although a punch is never acceptable.

ComprehensiveAd8815@reddit
I’m an actor myself, most folk are absolutely lovely, grasping backstabbed aside 🤣😜 but there are a lot of people with demons and they handle their insecurities badly but there is a whole echelon of twattery, a whole strata of bellendery that Lindsay lives on
ozplissken@reddit
Oh you're 100% right regarding the demon angle. This industry attracts broken people like you wouldn't believe, and I should know! İf you're fucked in the head and demand attention constantly, head to the "entertainment" industry!
unnaturaldoings@reddit
I'm actually friends with him and I can't tell you enough how lovely he actually is. He's got a dark sense of humour and generally (in my dealings with him) has just been warm, witty and wonderful. I guess after his lengthy career, he'd like to enjoy some anonymity, and that is no excuse for being rude. But he's always been lovely to be around. Same as his wife. Let my kid run amok in his house playing with his dogs, always came to support me.
I know everyone has their different stories, but I can only say as i find and he's been so wonderful and supportive to me. I only hope those times when he wasn't lovely it was because he was having a crappy time and wasn't being his usual lovely self.

Not a shocker this, but David Starkey really is as awful as you would expect. He is short, and various things have to be adjusted for that but you cannot mention it. He had to be given a cushion for his chair so he was at the right height for the table he was sitting at, but it had to be done without mentioning height... Also he had a flunky just to hand him pre-unwrapped cough sweets. On another day of filming he just didn't turn up, no note, no apology, no explanation, and the production wasted thousands of pounds. I have never come across any other tv historian who behaves anything like this.
1980heron@reddit
Michael Sheen always seems a bit too public with his 'good works'. Never gives 50p to a charity without posting on social media.
Ambitious_Jelly3473@reddit
Not TV or theatre specifically but I worked security at many, many festivals and concerts over the years.
Many of the more loathsome individuals we met came from the likes of X Factor/Pop Idol or were younger "stars" of the soaps, many of whom came across as far too big for their boots.
We had to close a stage at V Festival after a certain X Factor reject started throwing things at the crowd, then complained when they retaliated. Can't remember her name, but she was vile and entitled.
Jon Bon Jovi was a bit of a weapon with his list of instructions but didn't actually meet him face to face. Things like don't look at him. Don't acknowledge. Step 6 feet to the side if he's walking towards you. Never sure how much of it was him versus his management but it didn't endear him. Not that he likely cares.
On the flip side, Keith Flint was awesome. Shook hands with everyone he could, thanked us all and left us drinks backstage. Had a lovely 10 minute chat with Bono backstage at Wembley. Always thought he was a dick but turns out he was genuinely lovely.
Similarly, Prince Harry was great as well. Met him in a very casual moment, when he was in scruffs and not long back from Afghanistan. His CPO's were much less friendly but he was great.
Familiar_Radish_6273@reddit
I'm glad Bono was nice. I have to say I think a lot of the hate he gets is unjustified. When you look at what is going on in the world, he's done nothing wrong compared with 90% of famous people.

Bruce Forsyth.
Back in the days of The Generation Game my uncle appeared on it with his mother-in-law. They were doing the early intro banter and Alan, my uncle, made a light, unscripted joke at Bruce’s expense and it got a good laugh. Bruce went with it for the cameras but at the first break in filming he pushed Alan against a wall, leant in really close with a pointed finger and said something like “I do the fucking jokes around here sonny.” then stormed off. Also, Bruce never once met up with the contestants if the camera wasn’t on, no visit to the green room, no congrats or thanks after the show. Complete arsehole IMO.

I was neither a fan or disliked him before I was told this. He was just someone that was there on TV, on a Saturday night so you watched the show (this was the 70s after all). As I got older I thought he was smarmy and me calling him this is what led to my uncle telling me the story. Never liked him since and when I saw a clip of a documentary he did, it only confirmed it.

If he hadn't been so entertaining, ranting about random shit for hours on end at after-show parties, I might have got a better degree. Imagine WILTY, only with him vs Mel and Sue (they'd graduated but came to perform regularly), age 19-21, at 4am after a lot of booze.
Rob Webb was a decent bloke too.

I not David Mitchell but did meet Robert Webb at a book signing for his autobiography. Mentioned I was a big Peep Show fan and he made a noise and face that indicated he didn’t like people doing that.
MoominMai@reddit
Yeah, I guess maybe his tolerance is completely worn out after possibly thousands of times of hearing that when I guess he has done other stuff like Smoking Room, Back and his own comedy show with David would probably have been closer to his heart especially as more recent as well. That said though, PS was an utterly unique and iconic show that’s really stood the test of time and something that to this day I watch at least a few times a year! So I’m surprised that he can’t see that but then I guess maybe it’s a different perspective for the artist compared to the audience.
WolfColaCo2020@reddit

hubby was in charge of security for the BAFTAs show one year. He class me up to ask ‘who the hell is Tommy Steele’. I reply by instinct; ‘National treasure’. Hubby is an Aussie so had no idea who he was, simply says OK and puts phone down. I carry on with evening, slightly bemused.
When he came home he told me that Tommy Steele was delightful, hanging out at the stage door with his team and joking with them. That was the event that he had the fire alarms going off because Liza Minnelli was smoking in her dressing room and was completely apologetic but wouldn’t stop. He thought she was eccentric but funny too.
He’s dealt with many VVIPs over the years and has a very long list if those that he dreads having to interact with.
When he finally met David Attenborough all he could stutter out was ‘really admire your work’. Hubby is NEVEr lost for word.
Special mention to Archbishop Desmond Tutu who he called adorable
Escapedtothecountry@reddit
Whereas I’ve read many times the story of how disliked Tommy Steele was by crews, and how on at least one occasion they all weed in the water that was then used as the rain pouring down on him in Singin’ In The Rain (a production I saw as a child).

This won’t be what you wanted to hear, but my wife worked on a Pierce Brosnan Bond film - even though it’s been over 20 years, she still gets all misty eyed whenever he’s mentioned. Apparently he’s the most wonderfully charming and pleasant person and - per my wife - the best looking human she has ever seen.
SixCardRoulette@reddit
Roger Moore was also apparently just an all-round good guy, never nasty to fans and the crew, protective of the women on set in a particularly unpleasant era for sexism (and, indeed, voluntarily stopped doing Bond because he felt he was too old to be playing love scenes with actresses in their 20s without it "becoming disgusting" due to the age gap and implied power dynamic).
And then there's this, from Mark Haynes, which just makes me tear up every time:
"As a seven-year-old in about 1983, in the days before First Class Lounges at airports, I was with my grandad in Nice Airport and saw Roger Moore sitting at the departure gate, reading a paper. I told my granddad I'd just seen James Bond and asked if we could go over so I could get his autograph. My grandad had no idea who James Bond or Roger Moore were, so we walked over and he popped me in front of Roger Moore, with the words "my grandson says you're famous. Can you sign this?"
As charming as you'd expect, Roger asks my name and duly signs the back of my plane ticket, a fulsome note full of best wishes. I'm ecstatic, but as we head back to our seats, I glance down at the signature. It's hard to decipher it but it definitely doesn't say 'James Bond'. My grandad looks at it, half figures out it says 'Roger Moore' - I have absolutely no idea who that is, and my hearts sinks. I tell my grandad he's signed it wrong, that he's put someone else's name - so my grandad heads back to Roger Moore, holding the ticket which he's only just signed.
I remember staying by our seats and my grandad saying "he says you've signed the wrong name. He says your name is James Bond." Roger Moore's face crinkled up with realisation and he beckoned me over. When I was by his knee, he leant over, looked from side to side, raised an eyebrow and in a hushed voice said to me, "I have to sign my name as 'Roger Moore' because otherwise...Blofeld might find out I was here." He asked me not to tell anyone that I'd just seen James Bond, and he thanked me for keeping his secret. I went back to our seats, my nerves absolutely jangling with delight. My grandad asked me if he'd signed 'James Bond.' No, I said. I'd got it wrong. I was working with James Bond now.
Many, many years later, I was working as a scriptwriter on a recording that involved UNICEF, and Roger Moore was doing a piece to camera as an ambassador. He was completely lovely and while the cameramen were setting up, I told him in passing the story of when I met him in Nice Airport. He was happy to hear it, and he had a chuckle and said "Well, I don't remember but I'm glad you got to meet James Bond." So that was lovely.
And then he did something so brilliant. After the filming, he walked past me in the corridor, heading out to his car - but as he got level, he paused, looked both ways, raised an eyebrow and in a hushed voice said, "Of course I remember our meeting in Nice. But I didn't say anything in there, because those cameramen - any one of them could be working for Blofeld."

That made me smile.

QuantitySharp2662@reddit
I wanted to hear that actually.
Pierce Brosnan is a legend. A good actor, handsome man, and a decent fellow.
God bless ye for sharing 🙏
yearsofpractice@reddit
Agree regards the good actor thing. One thing I really like about him is that he can genuinely act comedy in the way that people like Clooney / DeCaprio etc can’t - he’s Cary Grant-ish in that way… stupid handsome but can do funny.

The commenter had accidentally bumped into him, but he apologised and said "entirely my fault".

I was an extra in a movie and PB was on set. Can confirm he's a lovely chat. Sat with all of us for lunch. Happy to sign an autograph for my girlfriend (now wife) and a few pics (on a camera with film in it - was a while ago).
neatcleaver@reddit
I feel like you can tell what he's like because of how he feels about his wife as well
He's massively famous and no doubt very well off and could probably find himself a 20 year old model like many celebs do but he's so absolutely infatuated with his wife after being together for over 30 years and he speaks so highly of her it's so cute
It's really frustrating because people like to be people and make snarky comments about her, how he could do better bla bla just horrible people
He's just massively in love with her and that says it all about what kind of person he is to me, and with how fiercely he defends her against these morons (even though he shouldn't bloody have to!!!)
ribenarockstar@reddit
He's a total wife guy! Which is very attractive and speaks well of him as a person

“Funny as well, because everyone always says our 22 year old son is the spitting image of him! What are the chances.”

My dad confirms this, he worked in film and tv and never stops going on about what a great guy Pierce is. Used to spend all his downtime socialising with the crew.
yearsofpractice@reddit
Precisely what my wife said too regards his socialising with the crew. Admittedly, she also tells me - while looking me 5’9” frame up and down - tall as well as handsome!
gjs78@reddit
My wife’s friend has worked for EON for years and knows Pierce Brosnan personally. He came to her son’s christening and was just the nicest guy you could want to meet. Both my wife and I had a bit of a crush on him afterwards…

Bodger, from bodger and badger. Brilliantly funny man terrible alcoholic. Gave me a £20 tip for looking after him at a gig in about 2005.
deckchair1992@reddit
Every time I hear about bodger I get reminded of this review of his performance at Glastonbury
So every year I come on these forums and there are always people bigging up Bodger and Badger, but did anybody actually see them this year?
1) Bodger looks like an aging 90s raver, complete with head to toe sweat
2) Rather than coming on stage with a puppet badger, he arrived with a severed hand!?!
3) He referred to all the children as "geezer" in a rather aggressive tone
4) He explained to 5 year old children the effects of taking magic mushrooms
5) He shouted "shut you face" at one small child
6) At one point he put his fingers in a child's mouth
7) He used the popular culture reference of Cole Porter to an audience with average age 7
8) He accidentally swore, then blamed the badger who swore back at him
9) Finally, he ended his set by telling the children to be careful around Bob Dylan as he is often found conning children backstage!
Seriously, this man was smacked off his tits!!!! Please somebody else say they saw this, otherwise I might think I have imagined this!
James20985@reddit
He was very very drunk, his rider was two bottles of bells whiskey (yes the rubbish stuff) where he had consumed one before going on stage, his audience was 18+ uni students when I saw him and the jokes were age appropriate, I did feel very sorry for him but he was pleasant to deal with.

Ok, a weird one, but I met Mani from Stone Roses whilst playing Sunday League football.
There was a bar called The Stone Roses Bar in our town, and the night before he’d done an appearance at a Madchester club night in a different bar/club.
Apparently when he learnt of the Stone Roses Bar he decided he needed to show his support, but was going to leave town before it opened, so went to their pub teams match instead.
I wasn’t playing for Stone Roses, but the opposition instead. At the time I was a defender, and didn’t mind ‘letting the other guys know I was there’. About 20 minutes in, I went in hard on their winger sending him sliding off the pitch right at Manis feet, can clearly remember him referring to the number 4 as a Meaty Bastard to his mate - I was wearing number 4. Also referred to me as a big bastard when I went up for a header in the 2nd half as well.
He hung out with the 2 teams after the match when we all went to the pub afterwards. Was the nicest bloke who bought everyone’s first drink and chatted to everyone. We had a 5 minutes chat where I was described as a dirty ‘c-word’ and someone he’d want to play football with, but never against.
SammiWG@reddit
He seemed to be the glue that held the stone roses together (as together as they ever were) the other three weren't particularly close but they all loved Mani.
Arnoave@reddit
Goldie (the DJ) came and did a "guest lecture" at my music tech degree when I was at uni. Considering the amount we paid a year in tuition, it was a bit shit to have this old has-been on stage for 3 hours rambling on about how cool he was and telling anecdotes from his tours etc. Don't get me wrong, in a pub setting, great speaker, bags of charisma, but a "lecture" this certainly was not.
Anyway, the arsehole bit, we were all standing outside the lecture hall afterwards, generally having a fag or getting ready for the next class or whatever, and suddenly the front doors both swing open (whereas he would have normally used the stage doors on the other side of the building) and he had a running roadblock around him of large men in black suits and shades literally ploughing through any of the students unlucky enough to be in the way.
A couple of lads who had actually heard of him (this was about a decade after anything of his would have been in the charts, I had to google him the night before) tried to go "nice one Goldie!" and get a fist bump or something, but they were unceremoniously shoved to one side by the big men while Goldie stared ahead with his shades on (in October).
Cheap-Vegetable-4317@reddit
I worked at Tower Records as a teen and Goldie, at his most famous then - ie not really that famous - came and did an in-store meet and greet. He was hands down the most unpleasant celebrity anyone could remember.
Best celeb was Barry Manilow. He got one of the biggest crowds ever, stayed late so none of them would be disappointed and was so charming to so many people who, frankly, should have had restraining orders. He had a lot of stalkers and he shook their hand and said nice things about the portrait of him they had drawn in their own blood. He was also delightful to staff. He behaved as if he was a young, polite, unsigned hopeful whom we had kindly allowed to come in and play a song for us.
Everyone liked Alice Cooper, who I did not meet sadly. He famously went to the pub with the shop staff afterwards which got thumbs up all round.
SammiWG@reddit
Apparently Barry Manilow has had the same touring crew for years, they won't work with anyone because of how well they're treated working with him.
Arnoave@reddit
Alice Cooper is genuinely my favourite celebrity I think. My dad took me to one of his gigs when I was 11 at my own insistence because I'd heard his music through a friend at school, who probably got it from his parents or something.
Highlyironicacid31@reddit
Alice Cooper spat blood on me. Don’t worry, It was intentional, I was front row at a gig lol.

Family member is an actor, not a famous one but you've seen him in various movies and TV shows and possibly in the theatre too. He says a lot of people he works with are occasionally irritating, but the two who stand out as deeply unpleasant are James Nesbitt and Dominic West. Brother can find good things to say about most people but not those two. To balance it out he says Anna Chancellor is a delight and Michael Gambon was a lovely man.

Ben Miller is also absolutely delightful. I used to phone him from time to time to set up meetings with him and my boss, early in my career when I worked as an Executive Assistant. I live in the same village as his parents. When he comes home to visit his Mum makes him and his whole family go to church. Apparently you can tell that he doesn't want to be there, he's just being a good son. He drives everyone back up north in his Range Rover. His brother who is absolutely not famous but has a few quid flies in by helicopter.
Twenty five years ago we politely kicked him out of the pub for my Dad's 50th birthday party. Alexander and his friend had come in for a quiet pint, when we arrived with decorations food etc and started setting up. When my Mum noticed him she went over and explained that the pub was about to be filled with 100 people and invited them to stay and join in. Alexander was very polite thanked my Mum for the invite, finished his pint and left.

Know someone who works for Waitrose in a very posh area. Richard E. Grant is very dismissive and rude to staff, on a regular basis, Ozzy Osbourne came in once, but was so wasted he kept himself to himself. My dad helped renovate Pauline Quirk's family pub, he used to sleep over, apparently she was really nice. He knew Johnny Rotten around the time he became a punk, he was an absolute knob

dowhileuntil787@reddit
I was at the RHLSTP podcast recording with Richard E Grant. It was very funny, but he did have an odd charming but also vaguely threatening vibe... Mysteriously, the episode was kiboshed by Grant's team and (apparently) he has ghosted Richard Herring ever since, with no explanation.

niffydroid@reddit
I bet the feeling with him is the day of the week. He looked after his wife with dementia and also basically brought up his daughter in law kids. So there must be some kind qualities to him
YQB123@reddit
All the more reason why he should be kind then.
There's no need to treat anyone like shit no matter what you're going through.
unbelievablydull82@reddit
I'm sure there is. I grew up in the same area as him in the 80s and 90s, and also came from a working class Irish family. It was rough, definitely not easy, and there are people of my generation and above who are very similar in behaviour to Rotten.
Tuarangi@reddit
John Lydon has become a bit of a corporate slut these days and lied about several things in his autobiography, the "outed Saville and was banned by the BBC" is an obvious falsehood but also trying to take credit for album artwork that he definitely didn't do. Not surprised he was a knob back then either
MixGroundbreaking622@reddit
To be fair there is an interview from the 70s where Lyndon aludes to the Saville accusations. Doesn't directly accuse him, just says something along the lines of "everyone knows he's up to all sorts of stuff but you can't talk about it"
Tuarangi@reddit
That's specifically what I was referencing, you can watch it online, he literally says nothing of substance
Talk about making a film where he "kills" celebrities
In the 70s seediness could be being gay, he never says anything like Savile is abusing kids or corpses or anything, just a vague suggestion of something that could be anything
He lied about being banned from the BBC too

Johnny Rotten doesn't know come across very well in Viv Albertine's autobiography 🤢
unbelievablydull82@reddit
He once popped into a secondary school leaving party by cousin was throwing and bought everyone drinks, so he must have some decent qualities. Having said that, my dad was saying that Rotten and his mates were trying to goad my dad and his mates into a fight in a pub in Chelsea, which was a bad idea, seeing as my dad and his mates are all Irish builders. The police turned up and started hitting Rotten and his mates, as they were sick of being called out to fights they had started

Robin Ince is one of the most genuinely kind people I've ever met and it's full of fun stories.

Ian McKellen is a really really lovely chap and very cheeky. I never worked with him but used to frequent a spot near the theatre in Cambridge. He'd often say something funny then he'd sneak out the door chuckling as the people suddenly realised who he was.
grokebomb@reddit
Someone I studied with wrote her thesis about James Whale and contacted Ian McKellen as he played him. He invited her to his house, spent a couple of hours talking with her and then gave her a paintbrush he had that originally belonged to James Whale.
Bocadillodeldia@reddit
Took me a minute there to realise you didn’t mean James Whale of Radio Show fame. Couldn’t remember the film about his life, never mind starring Ian McKellan
arfski@reddit
This sent me down a path of finding out that James Whale (of The James Whale Radio Show) who was regular viewing for me when returning home from a night out (or Prisoner Cell Block H depending on how late/off my tits) had died last year. On the other side, Gods and Monsters was a cracking good film about James Whale the director that Sir Ian is in!
Falloffingolfin@reddit
Ian McKellen tapped me on the shoulder once to ask my opinion in something he was discussing with his friend. His friend turned out to be Stephen Fry. There are many stories of people approaching celebrities, but my friend has the opposite that Peter capaldi approached him because he had an Aberdeen strip on in London.
Speedy_Dragon46@reddit
I ran in to him briefly at a train station. He was in a hurry but he stopped when he heard me exclaim loudly to my husband “omg it’s Gandalf!”, gave me a hug and wished us a pleasant evening. Lovely, lovely man.
Almost_human-ish@reddit
I played chess with him once in a bar above an art centre in London once about 20 odd years ago.
I was a little bit drunk and coked up (addiction issues), but trying my damnedest to be respectful and polite, didn't him long to utterly defeat me obviously .
From what I remember he was absolutely lovely and friendly and when I left he took hold of my hand for a moment, gave me a concerned look and said something like "oh please do take care of yourself" then smiled and said goodbye.
I wish I could have met him when I was not such a mess, if only to tell him his words mattered to me, and a small step in my journey to sobriety.

MrsD12345@reddit
Oddly, I had completely the opposite experience. He had met my dad a few times, and was introduced to us family the once. About a year later mum and I passed him on Oxford street and he immediately stopped us to say hello and pass his regards to dad. Debbie on the other hand gave mum a dirty look and walked off leaving him chatting to us.

I’ve met Paul and Debbie twice and they were absolutely lovely both times. So I’ve also had the opposite experience. happyhippohats@reddit
Why are your ages relevant to this anecdote?
men_in_the_rigging@reddit
Maybe he fancies himself as a page 3 pin-up.
Electronic_Fun8306@reddit
because of the age gap and they being cousins, people usually dont believe me; even though him being a twat is completely believable and i'd no reason to sully his name based on watching him on TV alone. Close but not quite.
happyhippohats@reddit
But we only know about the age gap because you brought it up...
Electronic_Fun8306@reddit
yeah i dont know why i specified, in this context. and it was his cousin not mine.
Electronic_Fun8306@reddit
in fact ive told people going along with anti-paul daniels sentiment my anecdote and because they didnt quite believe it based on my mate of my age being his cousin, deciding that it didnt add up and start defending him, for some reason.

Tuarangi@reddit
YewTree started in 2012, Daniels died in 2016 and was never charged, all the main arrests started late 2012 / early 2013 so he did pretty well to hide it if he was
Victorius_Meldrus@reddit
I suspect there was a significant burden of proof in regards to Yewtree arrests. Especially when the suspects were so relatively high profile. Just look at the absolute shambles that the (completely innocent, obvs) Cliff Richard situation turned into.
Plus, if anyone was going to have a penchant for making his accusers/victims disappear, it'd be Daniels.

I recall one night where she spent several minutes chatting to and calming down a young neurodivergent theatre fan who was overwhelmed at getting to meet her and couple of times she had Brian May (her husband) with her and was never annoyed by people freaking out over him rather than her amazing performance! I’ve never heard anyone say a bad word about her.

My friends daughter was in a play with Alan Rickman for a run in London, was invited to see it and met him. He was just wonderful. Funny, charming, sarcastic and welcoming. As if I didnt already love him.

In my several interactions with Nick Frost, though outside of work-related circumstances, he was been very pleasant and accommodating of people asking for photos etc even when people should have really left him alone to spend time with his kids.
Not Film & TV related but from the sporting world, my dad once took me over to interrupt the Notts Forest team during a team meal to ask for autographs at some point during the 80's whilst in Spain. I was in full Liverpool kit at the time and though some of the players took exception to that fact their renowned for being grumpy manager Brian Clough was anything but and was incredibly welcoming to us. It could have been the Sangria speaking of course.
I've met Jürgen Klopp on a few occasions now and he is genuinely one of the nicest people I've ever met; warm, friendly and generous with his time despite rooms full of people all demanding his attention, all at once.

I've heard bad things about Ian McDairmid and Trevor Eve, both from trusted sources. McDairmid apparently was a total arse and just created a really bad atmosphere on the show he was starring in. Trevor Eve had an ego so big he kept doing retakes until he thought he looked good enough in the scene.

Please tell me Greg Davies and Alex Horne are lovely. I mean I know Alex is, I just want to double check on Greg.
ScatmanRon@reddit
I went to school with Alex, he is truly a lovely man.
I shared a dressing room with Greg last year while we were doing a play and he was doing a one off gig. We thought he'd be a prick because we got a note from his people the day before that we weren't allowed to speak to him and we were confined to the furthest corner of the dressing room.
Greg was fine on the night. Gave us a bit of chat and thanked us for the goodies we'd left for him. Nice guy.

Greg Davies kicks sick puppies. And Alex Horne just laughs and pretends it's funny
queen_naga@reddit
Nah they have an authentic dynamic that has naturally developed over years and is way more nuanced than that if you watch any interview with them or watch the show as religiously as I do.
As much as I love dynamics like Lee Mack and David Mitchell on WILTY it’s entirely fabricated and scripted and they both lean into these opposing personas despite both being middle class and nothing like their supposed personas.
Alex and Greg evolved a dynamic by not knowing each other and basing it on their real chemistry.
ozplissken@reddit
You lie sir!

Damian Lewis - bumped into him at the interval at an Almeida show. We were both running late for the 2nd half. The heavy doors closed in front of me while I was carrying 2 large glasses of wine. He was a good few feet ahead but came back to open the doors. Felt cool walking back into the theatre chatting about our thoughts on the first half. Top bloke.
Brian Cox - may have been having an off day. I went for a pint after a show he'd just acted in on the west end. Bumped into him at the entrance of the pub. Congratulated him on a fine performance. He then told me that he wasn't Brian Cox but "he gets that a lot". Weak....I got to know his daughter several years later though and she's pretty funny.

No, she said he was an asshole to her when she was pregnant and unceremoniously fired her after she gave birth.

There was no heated argument
Stop making stuff up. He was accused of bullying her. As in, he went out of his way to be cruel and verbally abusive

I didn't mean to imply that at all, I intended to clarify that there were no allegations of any sexual impropriety towards her or Charisma Carpenter, which was implied in the comment I responded to.
I wasn't defending his actions or minimising what he did. I just think it's important to be clear on what the allegations actually are.
Divine_fashionva@reddit
That’s fair enough, I’m just confused where you got the she was hot headed thing from?
She was a 14 year old girl who has always been described as the opposite, she was bullied pretty much her her childhood on and off set

Very unpleasant to female actors (especially Charisma Carpenter); did something to the late Michelle Trachtenberg (aged 14-15) which resulted in his never being allowed to be alone with her again
happyhippohats@reddit
They weren't allowed to left alone together because they were both hot headed and would often get into heated arguments. This was taken completely out of context in clickbait headlines at the time.
He may be a bit of a dick to work with but he hasn't been accused of anything beyond that.

She was not hot headed? Why make that up?
He was accused of bullying her. He quite literally reduced her to tears multiple times and was described as gleefully cruel

For real though, he was really nice and authentic.
I’m in the music industry so I often meet well-known/semi famous people and most of them are just like everyone else, have good days and bad days.
Jeremy was one of the only people I’ve met where I’ve come away from the encounter wanting to be more like them. He just exuded a natural peace, authenticity and empathy that I’ve tried to emulate myself:

I was flying back from Italy once and there was a (very) delayed flight at the adjacent gate going to London. The people were asking the BA staff for updates and getting nowhere.
All of a sudden a voice bellowed from the back of the crowd. It was so powerful and distinctive that everyone went quiet. Didn't obviously help the delays but it did get them clearer answers.
The voice was Scar from the Lion King, I mean Jeremy Irons.
Didn't have any airs and graces just sat amongst the crowd waiting and chatting to folk.

Craig Charles did a gig at the SU I worked at in the mid 90s, part of his stand up tour. Was a really great down to earth guy, had drinks and a smoke with us after the show. Really humble and thanked us all for the work we did setting it up.
SimpleExpress2323@reddit
Anecdotal;
My Grandad was friends with one of the cast of Hi De Hi, and said friend invited my Grandparents to an awards show as they had some freebie tickets.
We are talking early 80s, full sit down dinner, free bar, dinner jackets, the works. Not televised.
David Jason was there at another table and was apparently so up his own arse it was excruciating. Oh and a massive racist, as some of the waiting staff were black and South Asian - he knew all the common slurs of the time. My Grandad loved Indians and Indian culture after serving there in the war and was deeply upset by it.

met Jeremy Clarkson when I was in my teens, I lived in the same village his parents lived in, he was outside the local shop in a gallardo and I took my phone out to take a picture and gestured to him to ask if I could, he was parked up reading a newspaper and covered his face with it. haven’t watched anything with him in it since. 10 seconds out of his day would have made a massive difference, and would have been something I’d spoken about a million times since.

Strangers arent entitled to a photo with a celeb, any time, any where, off the clock, 24/7. I imagine it gets a bit exhausting, especially if you don’t feel or look your best. People only take these photos so they have bragging rights. I’m not sticking up for JC in particular, as I’ve heard he is particularly nasty (from some on who I know worked on the grand tour), but it isn’t your right.
Interesting-One7810@reddit
oh I completely get that, but celebrities are literally rich because of their fans, if they don’t like that sort of attention they shouldn’t pursue a career as a celebrity. 10 seconds out of his day would have made my year. so just no longer a fan.
Far-Squash4072@reddit
Celebrities are rich because of their performances in the media. That doesn’t entitle you to a blurry selfie.

new_usernametaken@reddit
A company I worked for did some work on his house, probably 20+ years ago. Everyone that worked on that project said he was a really odd guy. A few of the stories that I can remember, are that he would wake up at about 9, walk out onto his balcony that faced his back garden and patio area, in a just very loosely tied dressing gown whilst people were working directly under the balcony and on the patio area. He also had quite a few naked paintings of himself and his wife in various 'suggestive' positions, dotted around his house.
Supposedly, (although in hindsight, I'm pretty certain this was Chinese wispers or people just outright lying for clout as people like to do on building sites, because so many people denied this ever happened, whereas the other 2 things i previously mentioned were confirmed by everyone that worked there) he asked 2 or 3 of the guys on separate occasions if they'd be interested in staying on after workings house for some 'entertainment' with him and his wife.

Reminds me of Henry Cavill - he would come onto set with a rewritten script if he didn’t like the pages he’d been sent for the scene. This was Witcher Season 2. He justified his rewrites by saying he was an exec so had the right to. He would then threaten to say every line of the original script in a racist accent (yes, genuinely!) unless his version was approved. Season 3’s contract included a clause where he was no longer allowed to tamper with the script. He was generally so much of a nightmare (had ‘covid’ for two weeks to film his Black Adam cameo) that he was fired. He didn’t quit. He was also never recast as Superman - he was trying to will it into existence by announcing it on socials in the hope that James Gunn would see the type and put him back in the role. Hence why he had to awkwardly retcon that a little while after. Netflix no longer want to work with him. He was also a bit of a misogynist, and according to a friend who worked closely with him, his relationship and child are a sham!

Perfect casting for Logan Roy. I think Jesse Armstrong learned this from working with Armando Iannucci. He also preferred to cast actors who had a bit of the character already in them. There's a couple more like that on Succession. But yeah I'm not surprised at all, given his public pronouncements in recent years.

I’m not going to talk shit about anyone because that would be unprofessional, though I will say that nine times out of ten, the “stars” (for want of a better term) themselves are perfectly fine and even grateful of a bit of normal conversation, it tends to be the people around them who are the arseholes.

I used to manage a rock venue, and generally it went that the bigger the artist, the higher chance of them being nice or at least professional. Most of the truly dickish types were one-shot acts that never followed up a big hit or whatever.
That's not to say there weren't some people with awkward requirements, or personnel on tour with them that were arseholes. But, mostly, those that were getting on with a decent career were acting like professionals.
I imagine it will be about the same in film and TV (have worked mostly in live / sports which is different): you might get the odd bad day, but mostly professionals will be professional about their work.

The worst person I ever worked with (this isn't a celebrity, just in general) was the sweetest, nicest person imaginable when she wanted to be. But in reality she was pretty horrible. On the other hand, I had a manager who at first meeting seemed demanding and a bit abrupt but she was actually a really good person who just didn't have a warm manner. Jim Davidson is a truly awful man. I had a colleague say he had made the box office lady cry at her old venue, which is what caused them to say they would never programme another of his shows again. I don't think they were the only venue that refused to have him back.
AllieMick55@reddit
I replied to a question he asked on what was then Twitter years ago, he replied back with a funny comment, then proceeded to DM me to chat me up
Virtual-Eye-2998@reddit
A friend was a hotel receptionist when she was 17, Davidson came down to the reception desk and complained very loudly (i.e. loudly enough to try and embarrass a teenager)that the wank TV wasn't working. Dirty sod.

I don't believe any of these comments, no way in a million years is Stratham a prick at work, not having it. At all. Or Steve Coogan.
Lychee_Only@reddit
I met Stephen Graham years ago in a nightclub in Leeds when he was filming The Damned Utd. It was stupid oclock on a sunday night & I was leaving as he was coming in on his own. He was in trackies and looked so out of place. I’d only just moved to Leeds from Northern Ireland and the last movie I’d watched was This Is England about 6 months prior so I was a big fan.
I stopped him to say hello and we were chatting on the stairs of the club for a few minutes before he asked if I wanted a bevvy. So we went to the bar and he bought me a bottle of beer and were just chatting for 20 mins. Telling me what he shooting, chatting about The Arctic Monkeys and stuff. He’d just finished filming for the day and wanted to get out for a bit. The club was called The Space. Had a bit of a rep in Leeds but it was usually the last place open to get a drink.
Anyway, I’ll not have a bad word said about Stephen Graham, an absolute fucking gent.

Not anything to do with not being nice, and I want to be very clear on that, but I had someone tell me that George Clooney made a pass at a male colleague of theirs. It seemed almost well known in some circles, but then he got married, so...
kushqt420@reddit
Isn't he linked to harry styles now too?
Cheap-Vegetable-4317@reddit
Someone told me x famous person made a pass isn't really strong enough evidence to even suggest it happened, never mind whether he's gay or bi.
ResplendentBear@reddit
This whole thread is a bit like that though isn't it?
Cheap-Vegetable-4317@reddit
Most of this thread is just, I sold this person a beer once and they were polite / not polite. There's quite a bit of difference between that and debating their sexuality.
Elegant-Mission-4470@reddit
I think people tend to forget that bisexuality exists when discussing celebrities. Not commenting on Clooney one way or the other, but people tend to assume that a celeb being interested in the same gender means they're lying about being interested in others.
Saotik@reddit
Fixed that for you. Bisexual people are often forgotten by both straight and queer groups.
PinkyOutYo@reddit
Or if they remember we think we exist, they declare we can't be because we're in a relationship with one gender. Do I need to be having an orgy 24/7 or be poly to be considered bisexual?
Thankfully, I'm in a heterosexual, monogamous marriage with someone who loves coming to Pride, gladly had no problem with using a bi flag I had lying around before we had curtain rails, and came home distraught once after having to defend why his wife is "gay" and no-one getting it.
Saotik@reddit
You sound like my wife! I'm proud to be an ally.

Those who remember her, Mollie Sugden was horrible. I was told - as an unsurprising fact that the late Peter Sallis was the opposite and couldn’t be nicer. Sir Michael Palin is apparently a sweetie and a joy.

As an American, it's interesting reading a lot of these names I haven't heard in years. I grew up watching Are You Being Served and Last of the Summer Wine. I believe I remember reading that John Inman was very friendly too.

Gwyneth Paltrow was once cast in an advert I was involved in making. She was a horrible person. She shouted at her assistants. Wouldn’t even look at the crew. Even her body guard complained to us about her. Behind her back, people referred to her as ‘the gwynch’.
Cheap-Vegetable-4317@reddit
One of my first jobs ever was assisting the stylist on a magazine shoot with Gwyneth. It was very early in her career, probably 1997, and she was still best friends with Winona Ryder who was the only person she said anything nice about the whole two days.
She was on time, I'll give her that, and she put on clothes and posed until the photographer said he was done. This is not a given. But she was the archetypal mean girl.

Bosch_Spice@reddit
I’ve heard similar shortly after the show ended. What did you hear?
spy-on-me@reddit
There does seem to be quite a divide in the cast. Nicola Coughlan, Dylan Llewellyn and Louisa Harland seem close but don’t have much to do with Saoirse-Monica Jackson and Jamie-Lee O'Donnell who are best mates. Doesn’t mean anyone’s an arsehole though.

I heard of a couple of incidents of Jaime-Lee being physically violent.

East-point-5@reddit
Jamie-Lee and Saoirse-Monica are actual Derry girls - Nicola and Louisa are from Dublin so that might make a difference? Dylan seemed quite shy on Race Across the World with his mum.

Yeah I've worked with loads of people who are nice enough and friendly but we don't have a friendship outside of work and haven't kept in touch once we no longer worked together - doesn't mean I thought any of them were assholes, we just didn't become close friends! I feel like people often assume that actors are always besties with people they've been on a show or film with, and that if they're not there must have been some drama, but there's no more reason they should be/remain good friends with their co-stars than any one in any other job should be besties with all their colleagues!

Prince Edward when he "worked" in the theatre was regarded as a snobby git. I've worked in Swansea Grand Theatre and Liverpool Philharmonic and Playhouse. I know a disabled (now deceased) American actress who interviewed Michael Sheen for a small free paper and she said he was lovely
A thing you have to understand about the entertainment industry is there's always tension
One, it's competitive. So every actor (or most of them) want to earn Michael Sheen level money. However not all of them are that good, or have pretty standard symmetrical facial looks that way which is part of what makes him easy to book for a variety of roles.
Two, actors often only hang out with basically their own competition although in my experience comics are worse about this. A lot of them don't like have a friend who's a flight attendant or teacher or something and they are still semi in touch with reality.
Three, it's a disorienting industry. I worked at a talent agency in LA. A client angrily called at exactly 9 AM and demanded to know why I wasn't in the office. "Someone is supposed to be in the office during business hours!" I had to explain that it was Sunday. Most actors don't work that much as actors; they have day jobs like bartender or retail or even event security guard where people are maybe not nice or get confrontational with them. It's a disorienting job and they don't have a normal schedule that keeps them grounded in some cases.
Four, the crew gets far less recognition. It's very hierarchical because the director has to keep everything moving so people feel they get yelled at or their opinions aren't taken very nicely or seriously. However, the director is under pressure to get it done very well, on time and on budget, from producers. Actors are sometimes producers.
Five, on sets there can be moments where like a crane isn't working. So producers will chat to main actors to keep them calm and keep them up. I was on a set in LA in maybe 2013 in a very minor way (think PA or background extra level minor, like very bottom of the chain). One shot for a show on FOX was taking forever and even though producers were trying to manage the main actors they were still getting upset.
Eventually the director was like, "look it's NOT you. We're not mad or anything and it's not your performances we have to get this crane fixed." It was an equipment problem but the actors were worried it was them. That had like a morning call time for most actors and extras, and we didn't get done until about 2AM. This was a problem for the non union extras because some of them had taken the bus and now didn't have a way home (NU extra is sporadic minimum wage work). They were all running around trying to find rides.
So like, these sets have a lot going on and there's a lot of different interests competing and a lot of emotions going on.
I have not heard anything bad about Michael Sheen. A lot of actors who have bad rumors ("he's racist!") don't seem that bad to me. I heard that about one actor and he was very gracious and chatted with and did selfies with Black extras on the show. A principal actor could get an extra fired for approaching them, so if he's as racist as the rumor says why was he being nice instead of doing something to hurt them? Like some of these rumors I don't know how they got started and they seem to contradict what I've seen.
Julia Roberts seems nasty. I was at some awards thing as a cater waitress when I first moved to LA. She was supposed to present an award for this charity but used her speech to complain that the parking attendant asked for her ID. That was probably some student who was just doing their job. It was a very fancy club in a very fancy beach area so they probably are meant to ask any non-member. Anyway, Amy Smart and Julia Louis Dreyfus were also there and they were totally appropriate and JLD seemed genuinely lovely. So like, one it depends on the day as with anyone. Two, I don't even know why some people who seem awful have great PR. Three, I have not heard anything bad about Michael Sheen. Four, I think sometimes people who have an axe to grind will start horrible rumors "so and so is racist and uses this slur and that slur" and then you meet them and they seem fine with people of all races.
It's a messy industry, I wouldn't overthink it and also just understand a lot of lying is going on and there's a lot of friction.

Mark Rylance. Friends of mine worked at the Globe and apparently he was a self important diva. Shouting at Globe staff if he saw them while rehearsing, when they where just doing what they where told/their jobs and just generally being holier than thou.
A shame as I love him as an actor!

Had Hugh Dennis for our corporate awards ceremony a few years back and he was very chill. Came around to chat and take selfies with people on top of what he had actually been booked to do.
petantic@reddit
What a prick!
stevebucky_1234@reddit
I really believe Hugh Dennis and Dara O'Briein must be utter gentleman. In general, every celebrity has a social battery and a right to refuse selfies and introductions, whether at an event or in public, probably feels neverending . It's kind behavior on their part to oblige. (not a celeb, firm believer in boundaries, as I work with clients one to one!)
AssistanceNo1377@reddit
Can confirm from experience that Dara O'Briein is a gent - was super happy to talk to us in the pub after an event and was friendly and interested in us as people rather than it all being about him :)
behemuffin@reddit
He drinks in one of the pubs in my father-out-law's village and seems like a very nice, normal bloke.
efitchuk@reddit
He was a customer where I worked and he was always very nice to me and my staff
VeryThicknLong@reddit
Did he go for the happy ending?
efitchuk@reddit
Not in a bank🤣

I assume you mean 'obligated' unless you're suggesting nobody wanted him to but he did it anyway lol

I was on Wipeout and Bob Monkhouse was host. After I won we stood waving for the camera then stood chatting for a few minutes about the Northern club scene. Charming man and very funny.

Alison Hammond. Not everyone knows this but she actually pushed that man into the water at the Albert Dock.
Cantbearsed1992@reddit
I can’t stand her, she’s on flipping everything-why??
Extension-Truth@reddit
I should caveat my response was jokey/trolling, she’s seems nice but you never know! She was on that Last one laughing

This will surprise many but Paul O’Grady definitely wasn’t as lovely off screen as he was on the TV!
pineappleshampoo@reddit
Do you mean David Tennant wasn’t ’required’ to take photos with guests? It sounds like he was entitled to do so.
Sad_Ideal_2099@reddit (OP)
He was not supposed too, no

I worked at a local large music venue for a bit so interacted with a few celebrities 1. Evanescence (Not Amy Lee but the band) lovely. Stood and chatted to one while I was in the laundry area 2. Mike Kerr of Royal Blood - Shy but polite. I came across him lost while doing some checks and took him back to the backstage area. We just chatted about the venue for a bit. 3. Oli Sykes - Again, pleasant guy, just a normal man when off stage. 4. Michael McIntyre - My staff told me he apparently approached them for local slang. 5. Killing Joke - Assholes, rude to me, argued with me over backstage passes. Infamous line “do you know who I am?” No, at the time I didn’t and I didn’t want to let a man I barely could recognise into the backstage area who was shouting in my face. 6. Dan Smith of Bastille - Not at work. I was stood watching Rag N Bone man at the side of the stage. He came up next to me, with a hat on so I didn’t recognise him. He asked if he was ok to stand there so we chatted. I then told him how much I was looking forward to see his band. Not realising it was him! He was lovely.
Probably many more I can’t remember the specifics of. Oh one of the members of NDubz nearly knocked me over on a e scooter and swore at me :)

Don't work in showbiz but I did meet the comedian Jethro, at Ferneham Hall a few years ago before he died. He was in the bar, mingling with the audience, drinking a pint before he was about to go on stage to do his act. Came across as a genuinely friendly bloke and seemed to have time for everyone. I doubt many stand up acts do that these days.
RIP Jethro. Train still don't stop Camborne Wednesdays!

I wasn’t aware of Michael Sheen being a bit of a cunt- sorry to hear this as I like him. I love Kate Beckinsale and follow her on insta and she’s been posting stuff recently that I thought maybe could relate to him amongst others …..
Hammer-Rammer@reddit
Eh? Michael Sheen is fine. Some peoples version of the devil is just someone who stands up for themselves. Not sure I buy it from your family to be honest.
beatlesbible@reddit
I know a couple of people working in the theatre in south Wales who have said the same about Michael Sheen. Apparently he's absolutely awful to work with, and the nice guy persona is all a front.
bunksy93@reddit
Don't work in the industry but years ago when I worked in a sweet shop by the coast.. Ben Miller came in with his kids to get ice creams and he was an absolute gentleman so I'm hoping he'd be the same to worth with.
Wh4tEverTheWeather@reddit
Oh no, Micheal Sheen is taking over from Richard Osman's house of games too
Puzzleheaded_Turn887@reddit
Yeah, strange choice I thought.

David Jason - I was on a shoot with him and he was horrible. He might have just been having a bad week,
Paul McKenna - Would not stop telling everyone that he owned a Farrari.
