Is it OK to refer to women as girls in the UK?

Posted by Fun-Injury9266@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 869 comments

OriginalStockingfan@reddit

If she’s a woman your in a relationship with, fine to call her your girl, assuming you know she’s OK with it. If you a friends group of women, fine to call yourself the girls or go on a girls night out. A group of men would do similar but as the boy etc. If you’re referring to women in a sexual way, no. IMO and legally a woman is of age and can give consent, a girl is not an adult and cannot consent. Here context is important. So you might call your partner a girl in a sexual way, assuming she’s of age. You should never use the term to infer a woman is underage and therefore sexually attractive, or that a girl is some how a young woman and therefore fair game sexually. I know there will be all sorts of arguments put forward on both sides and it’s going to take time to change language use. Maybe we need to stop worrying and just enforce moral/legal/social norms that sex underage by adult men is never acceptable (USA and Epstein friends I point at your leaders and you) . I think Epstein has clarified a need here to treat girls and women by the legal definition and give them the protection they all deserve.

If you're going away on a Summer holiday, shut water off?

Posted by whatsreallygoingon88@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 199 comments

OriginalStockingfan@reddit

I’d leave it on. It feeds the boiler circuit too. Whilst I set the boiler to holiday mode it comes back on for hot water the day I come back. Low pressure on the boiler circuit can mess up the boiler. In 35+ years of owning houses, I’ve never had a water leak when away. As you’re not using taps etc there’s little reason for things to break.

How are average full-time workers affording to rent?

Posted by zeexzi@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 229 comments

OriginalStockingfan@reddit

I can only afford it because my wife is well paid. If we were both on my average salary, we’d have to severly cut back to afford the payments. It’s got to end soon, the ever increasing cost rises are hurting the poor and the middle income to reward the rich. That can not be sustained at this rate.

How old do you have to be to know that cash transactions are a thing?

OriginalStockingfan@reddit

I’m old enough to have worked on the first epos projects. Then we had real trouble getting people to understand there was a non-cash alternative. Now, I’ve used cash once this year so far. Teaching my kids about it raised some concerns eyebrows as they asked why it was important if I never used it…

Is There An Authority I Can Speak To About Fire Hazards In Our Apartment Building?

Posted by DisMyLik18thAccount@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 20 comments

OriginalStockingfan@reddit

I wasn’t being ridiculous, just commenting from my professional experience. But thanks for the comments otherwise. Until very recently it has been very easy for a landlord to stop a lease in the UK. I didn’t realise the US(?) was so well protected.

OriginalStockingfan@reddit

Ok, be careful here. You want and need to be safe but causing trouble for the landlord could get your lease terminated. Of course it’ll be for some other reason! In the uk complain to the council. They’re woefully underfunded so send as much evidence as you can. The fire service should also take an interest if you can find the right person. You can always call into the local fire station and have a quiet chat. Truth is, the residents leave the junk in the halls. The residents pay the landlord. The landlord cares only for money and a conviction. Good luck.

Never heard the Rowse honey thing. It’s passed as real (filtered and blended) honey by the UK Food standards agency. Not corn syrup as the conspiracy theories online suggest. Would be interested to know more on that one. I avoid Adobe. Pricing is too much compared to the competitors and I don’t like signing away my art for thier AI

It’s a public road. Whilst it’s annoying (I’ve been there) there’s not much you can do. He’s an idiot, you suffer the consequences. I negotiated with my boss to work early and leave early, thereby getting back before most other people. Would not solve 5-car man, but I did get a space more often.

Maybe tell her politely that she’s using up valuable bookings and if she wants to use your services there will be a minimum call out, non-refundable,non-transferable. If she gets upset about it, tell her why you’re doing it and that you can’t do her garden without it.

Unless anyone from these cities comments here’s my slightly educated and possibly biased opinion 1. Colchester Uni - Colchester is East Coast (not your classic beach location) reasonable size and an Army town. 2. Exeter Uni - Small city about 30 mins from classic British sea side but gravel beaches. Has a reputation as a Uni of being upper class students but quite liberal otherwise. Got a great riverside. 3. Nottingham Uni - big cosmopolitan city with large ethnic diversity, your head scarf won’t look out of place here. Lots of night life but far from the sea or anything other than the forests of Robin Hood 4. Brighton Sussex Uni - very liberal city on the sea front. A little run down maybe but a nice town. The heart of the LGBTQ++ community outside london last time I heard. There is a website for students to check out the reputation of each Uni in the UK which gives feedback on the Uni and staff as well as the city. Google it. Hope that helps.

Do you think drivers are more entitled in UK after pandemic?

I don’t blame the pandemic though. People re generally more inclined to to be short tempered. I blame a biased media and the effects of in-social media. Driving just puts us in a stressful situation where it bubbles over.

Yeah, but I think of speed in kmh but obey limits in mph. I measure all weights now in kg, but milk in litres. I’d be happy to change beer over as well, no big deal there. It’s only speed limits and people hanging onto old times that are holding me back.
