What has gradually disappeared in America that no one noticed?

Mine was pretty affordable. Granted I bought it pre-Covid so considering prices now I got a good deal. MPGs do suck compared to a Prius but they are pretty good for a 400 hp, 5600 lb brick. Considering my last vehicle was lighter, had a smaller engine with half the horsepower, and only got 2 mpgs better around town and the same highway, that's not a bad trade off.

What matters is gross C02 no matter where it comes from or how it's divvied up. Per capita means nothing in regards to the environmental impact. So China trending upwards in CO2 production with HSR while the US keeps chugging along with pickups and moving downwards, it looks like China needs to shape up. If the world is gonna end the way they say it is. Or this is all just a way to twist things to make America look bad no matter what we do. Par for Reddit. 🤷‍♂️

*is improving. You keep ignoring the part where US C02 production is going down because that's inconvenient for you. And let's be honest, if *I* were to switch to a sedan, it would have a V8 (probably the same one in my truck, Mopar or no car, baby!) so it would literally have no impact.

And as China urbanizes, their numbers go up. As US modernizes, our numbers go down. In the grand scheme of things switching from a truck to a sedan will have virtually no impact. So I don't stress about it.

I do think it's kind of wasteful that there are some houses with 40 years of cars sitting out in the yard rotting away instead of being recycled, or fixed and used. Otherwise, not really. Cruise ships produce a million cars worth of emissions a day. China dumps more than double the C02 in the air than the US per year, and has actually increased since 2016 (US decreased). Once they get their shit together, I'll worry about my pickup truck.

Not quite the same, but I handled a 7.5" Pietta replica Remington cap and ball. That bitch was front heavy. I much preferred the other Pietta replicas I handled, one a 5" Colt Navy in .36 and a 5" Dance Brothers (basically a Confederate simplified Colt clone) in .45.

How do atheist Americans feel about the line "one nation under God" in your pledge of allegiance?

I grew up atheist. Only time I got any slack for it was...first or second grade? I barely remember. I told my mom I was uncomfortable saying it because I didn't believe in God, and she told me I didn't have to say it if I didn't want to. So the next day I didn't say it. Another kid called me out, and he got so upset that I was atheist he started a fist fight. The teacher pulled us apart before there was any real damage dealt. Never was a problem again though.

Americans who follow premier league teams, how did you pick one?

Posted by AjustifiedTri@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 187 comments

OnlyStandard@reddit

A local morning radio show came up with rules for picking a sports team. I can try to find them later, but I'll try to lay them out as I recall them. 1. If you were born in a city with a sports team, that is your team. No exceptions. 2. If you are born in a city without a sports team, then you pick the team closest from the city closest to yours. If there are two, pick one, you can't do both. 3. If you are in an area without a major sports team and there isn't one nearby, you take on your dad's team. 4. If you are in an area without a major sports team, there isn't one nearby, and your dad doesn't have a team...pick whoever you want. So following these guidelines I was in the "pick whoever you want" category, but that didn't help, so I flexed the rules a little and picked the team my dad's family emigrated from. So I am a Wolverhampton supporter.

Thought you all would enjoy an interaction I had with my neighbor.

Heh, kinda reminds me of the bachelor party I attended in Oklahoma. Just to give you an idea of my perspective, i'm from suburban California, only got into guns and shooting out of my own curiosity. No one else in my family does it, and I have no shooting buddies, so I don't go often. Anyway, a friend was marrying a local guy, who invited me to his bachelor party. Drinking beer and shooting guns on his grandparents' property. Sounds like a great time, I'm in! A couple hours into the day, an older dude that looked like a stereotype rolled up. Way overweight, no shirt, just overalls, thick accent, beater truck. I assumed he was a neighbor. My first instinct was, "Ah shit. Party's over. Someone's complaining." Dude looked at this large handful of 20-30 year old dudes and said, "Y'all having a party, huh?" A few "yeps" and "yes sir's" emitted from the group. Then, I shit you not, he pulled a shotgun from behind his back (where was he keeping that thing?) and said, "You boys mind if I pop off a few rounds?" I thought to myself, "Toto, we're not in California anymore."

I was at a comedy club in NYC and got picked on by the MC. "Where are you from?" "Sacramento, CA." "Oh I have never been. I've been to many other places in California but never Sacramento. What would you say Sacramento is best known for?" "Probably one of the best features is its close to a lot of places. Within a couple hours you can go to Lake Tahoe, or the Bay Area, or the beach..." "So what you're saying is, it's close to all the other things you'd rather be doing than be in Sacramento."

Can you explain an ignorant European why some americans keep living in areas that are very prone to violent earthquakes/tornadoes/floods?

Posted by Tychus_Balrog@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 121 comments

OnlyStandard@reddit

I'm moving from an area with a very low chance of disasters to an area with a somewhat higher chance of disasters. Cost of living is the reason. I'm willing to put up with (and in my trade, benefit from) some crazier weather if it means I can buy a house for my family. The risk of dying from a natural disaster is still significantly lower compared to the risk of driving a vehicle every day in either city. In the case of tornadoes in the new city, some careful planning on specific areas that are hit less, buying a house with a storm shelter, and keeping an eye on the weather is all the precaution you really need.

Get off the internet (especially Reddit) and go talk to your neighbors. Most people are center-left to center-right and are amiable enough to approach the middle. Most people are reasonable enough to see a from the center-opposite side. It's loud losers that are tone-deaf racists or left of Marx that are controlling the discourse. They're loud cause they're in the minority. Focus on American values and coming together, not division.

I found California does not have the monopoly of gorgeous scenery. There's beauty to be had across all of the US. It really is wonderful country. I know what you mean about perpetual catching up mode. I started making real money in 2013, and my annual went up every year since. And every year since, housing in CA went up right along with it. I'm done chasing it. Fortunately garbage weather works in my favor since I'm in HVAC. 😁

What's with the obsession of lifted vehicles, specifically F-150s?

Posted by Lisanro@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 39 comments

OnlyStandard@reddit

Usually lifts are for extra clearance for larger tires for offroading. I don't have a "lift" on my truck because my tires aren't big enough to require it, but I do have what's called a "level" where the front is lifted just enough to match the height if the rear. I did it the same time I upgraded the shocks. Some dudes do some massive lifts and big wide wheels with rubber band tires. This is more for show, and signaling to other truck bros that they are truck bros.

Daihatsu Hijet deck van - Yeah I'm sure you really need that F150 for all those Groceries you're hauling and that one thing you tow a year.

I manage an HVAC service department of about 13 techs and have one female employee directly under me, and my answer would be yes. We have customers on the schedule and it puts an additional strain on the rest of our team when someone calls out. Granted, I imagine she would probably just call in sick; I'm a male so I think she would be uncomfortable telling me outright. But then I've had guys try to call out because their "allergies are really bad" or they're "just not feeling it" and from what I've been told by the women in my life, this would be a more legitimate reason than those, so points for trying at least.

The same reason anyone decides for themselves why they need any other type of firearm, I suppose. They are not really any more scary than any other type of firearm. Statistically, they are used extremely rarely in crimes or homicides. I have one. It's a relatively light, accurate rifle. Contrary to popular opinion, the round is plenty capable in terms of defense or hunting (depending on what you are hunting, of course). Since it's so popular, finding ammo or repair parts is easy. The appeal to me specifically is that they are very modular. Don't like the grip, stock, trigger, or sights? A screwdriver and a few minutes, and you can swap it out for a completely different one. Mine was bought in parts and pieced together over time, so there is no rifle quite like mine. It fits me quite nicely.
