How is Budlite going now?

Since the outrage almost 3 months ago, have they regained their users? Did you stop drinking it out of protest and stay on a new brand?

They used to be the number 1 selling beer - down 24% in sales. It's a very Republican company but I guess that beer can thing was a really big deal to some people.

They managed to piss everyone off. The right is angry they supported a trans person, and the left is angry they tried to walk it back instead of just supporting the minority they threw in front of a national audience.

What happened to target?
View on Reddit #3516795

Hugo_5t1gl1tz@reddit

The right jumped on target for selling pride themed stuff. And by jumped on, I mean threatened to kill target employees and such, so they backed down a bit on the displays
View on Reddit #3517278

Fire_And_Blood_7@reddit

It wasn’t the pride theme stuff. Targets been selling pride stuff for years. It was that they were selling trans / sexualized pride clothing to kids. And the company/owner making the line is an open devil worshipper. I don’t really care about any of it, but just pointing out that it wasn’t *just* “pride themed stuff” that caused it. The devil worshipping shit is funny tbh.

You mean kids with abusive parents. Kids aren't chemically stable enough to be trans. Anyone disagreeing is a groomer.

One of the designers who they licensed a couple things from has other designs they sell on Etsy or whatever that are more sexualized and a few that suggest maybe Satanism? Which isn't devil worship - they don't believe in the devil, let alone worship it. None of that stuff was being sold in Target. One swimsuit some folks made a fuss over was, I guess, described as "tuck-friendly" which mostly meant it offered a bit more coverage in the crotch area than most women's suits. That seemed to bother some of the people bothered because some kids wear adult sizes and they might buy that.
View on Reddit #3533046

I saw a few things that were questionable last time I went shopping, not just a rainbow on a shirt. Again, idrc but I can understand those people’s view point.

I’m not actually asking for you to take pictures, I’m just talking in the abstract, but I’d love to see some examples, because whether it was with my own two eyes, or whether it was pics posted by the people having a melt down over it, I’ve yet to see any kids clothes in target that was even remotely sexualized. And so when somebody made you aware that there existed in the world a trans person that was marketing beer to their small group of Internet followers, you're saying that in that moment you were faced with the choice between being forced to agree with their "lie", or disagree with them? Could you help me understand that a little better? If you remained blissfully unaware that this person existed, as I wish I could have been, what would be worse about your life?
View on Reddit #3517645

mustang-and-a-truck@reddit

It has not affected my life other than that I worry that this dysphoria, which folks are trying to normalize, is targeted at my kids. Not the beer, obviously, but the whole movement. It is a falsehood that breaks from reality, and it will, and clearly had damaged society. One cannot change a biological fact simply because they wish it to be true. A man who dresses as a woman is still a man. If we accept truth as subjective to our feelings, then reality is obscured. And if reality is obscured, and truth has no meaning, how can we ever tackle real issues, objective issues?
View on Reddit #3521333

>is targeted at my kids. No one is targeting your kids, man. You are the one that brought Mulvaney into their household. >One cannot change a biological fact I'm sure you've heard this a thousand times so I doubt it will sink in this time, but the people that are talking about gender identity aren't talking about genitals. I hope for your children's sake they do not grow up needing your support and understanding if they turn out to be different.
View on Reddit #3521584

mustang-and-a-truck@reddit

you think it isn't happening. It is all over my kid's school. It is happening. It is a lie that is being perpetuated. And if my kids turn out to be different, they will be loved and supported. But accepting a lie as a fact is not support. It's delusion.
View on Reddit #3539396

fastolfe00@reddit

> And if my kids turn out to be different, they will be loved and supported. But accepting a lie as a fact is not support. It's delusion. If you believe your kids believe their genitals are the opposite of what they are, that is a delusion and you should help them seek help. When your children say "gosh I feel like I identify more with {opposite gender here} than the one that it seems like my genitals are supposed to match with", you do not get to tell your child that they are delusional about their own feelings. You are not in their head. You are not experiencing what they are experiencing. What they are experiencing is about *gender identity*, not *what their genitals look like*. This is not about biology\*. Maybe some day you'll understand that. \* There is actually evidence that things like homosexuality and gender identity are established *before the child is born*, ie., *it's not simply a choice, or a phase, it's **who they are**.*

> I guess that beer can thing was a really big deal to some people Speaking even as a liberal who despises most right-wing culture war stuff, from what I hear it's a lot more than just a beer can with a trans person on it. To start with, I suspect many "mainstream" beers in the US are struggling right now, as local breweries and various smaller brands are growing in popularity due to higher quality (again I can't speak from experience because I don't drink beer, but this is what I've been told by those who do). Enter the Bud Light campaign, in which not only do they take a position that is wildly unpopular among their primary demographic of low-income right-wingers--trans people are cool, actually--but also the whole broader theme of the marketing campaign is that Bud Light "doesn't want to be the trashy beer of frat boys" any more and wants to be seen as a higher-class quality brand. This not only offends the "frat boy" types because it portrays them as trashy and unwanted ("if you don't want my business, I won't give it to you"), but it also fails to appear to the urban liberal types they're wanting it to because, well, it's still cheap shitty beer no matter what the ad says. So they gave up their core demographic and gained pretty much nothing for it. In summary: right wing boycotts are unjustified "culture war" bullshit 95% of the time but this one might be in the other 5%.

Not really any specific event. > games are generally on the left side of the spectrum Ehhhhhhhhh gamers also produce more anti-women, anti-racial minority, and anti-sexual minority hate than the entire rest of the country combined so I don't know if I'd agree with that even if "gamers" as a whole are probably more blue than red in a party-line vote due to age demographics. > one of their own got cancelled Who?

I myself haven’t played COD in yeaaaaaars there are just better shooters out and COD is just so watered down though ( try out hell let loose if your into FPS) To your second point I totally agree on second thought, I mean Activision themselves just settled what like 30 something sexual assaults or something? But I mean if you look at the last election and you only asked “gamers” I say Biden winning 75% of that vote, super arbitrary number from some dumbass on Reddit lol but I bet I ain’t far off. 3rd point, dudes name is Nickmercs I do believe, to much to type on Reddit just search his name on YouTube and you’ll get everything you need to know lol

That's all well and good but you can't announce you no longer want Republicans to buy your beer because you're going to be the LGBTQ brand going forward then get angry at those Republicans for not buying your beer when the LGBTQ clientele doesn't materialize. This gets a lot of media attention because it's political but that's just marketing 101.
View on Reddit #3515674

BostonBakedBees@reddit

AB said they dont want Republicans to buy their beer?
View on Reddit #3515769

-Handsome-Jim-@reddit

Not AB. A marketing executive at Bud Light said something along the lines of their customer base was too conservative and "fratty". They wanted younger, more LGBTQ friendly customers.
View on Reddit #3515838

BostonBakedBees@reddit

Oh, I looked it up because you used the term fratty. No she wasn't talking about their customer base. She said AB marketing was fratty humor and out of touch. So I imagine she means the dog humping a guy bud light commercial kind of stuff and women in bikinis cut outs everywhere. And she didn't say ONE thing about conservative. Not sure where you are getting your "news" but that's definitely not what she said. NOT even close. “I’m a businesswoman, I had a really clear job to do when I took over Bud Light, and it was ‘This brand is in decline, it’s been in a decline for a really long time, and if we do not attract young drinkers to come and drink this brand there will be no future for Bud Light,‘” Is including all kinds of people in their ads anti-GOP? It seems so. If they didn't care about 18 year olds showing their tits in ads or bestiality jokes in their commercials, it just being homophobic.
View on Reddit #3516188

-Handsome-Jim-@reddit

I don't know why you're being so confrontational about this but at no point did I say I was giving you a direct quote. So, fratty and out-of-touch as opposed to fratty and conservative. Whatever. The point is she wanted to move in a different direction away from their target customers. Again, that's all well and good but you can't announce you don't want your target customers anymore because you're pursuing a different customer then when you're new preferred customers never materialize expect the old one to remain loyal. In this case that original customers were mostly Republicans. All kinds of people have been included in Bud ads for decades without it being a problem. It turns out a company announcing they want to move away causes people to, well, move away. Calling that homophobic is just you being childish.
View on Reddit #3517325

fastolfe00@reddit

>The point is she wanted to move in a different direction away from their target customers. Trying to attract new customers is not the same thing as trying to reject your existing customers. If the act of inclusion makes you want to leave the group, that's not them being exclusive of you, that's you being exclusive. Like it wasn't too long ago that there was a big advertising push to try and get more women buying beer. I don't recall there being a big conservative boycott because they were trying to drive away men. But they let one trans person try and market to their Internet followers, and everyone loses their shit and suddenly Bud Light is trying to eliminate conservative customers?
View on Reddit #3518043

-Handsome-Jim-@reddit

But they did reject their existing customers. That's the whole point. It turns out Bud Light drinkers don't like effectively being called fratty and out of touch. I think the obvious problem with yours and the other's guys arguments here is Bud Light has kind of been big with their LGBTQ support since it's become en vogue. This was hardly the first LGBTQ campaign. It's just the first one to coincide with them calling their existing customers fratty and out of touch.
View on Reddit #3518695

fastolfe00@reddit

>It turns out Bud Light drinkers don't like effectively being called fratty and out of touch. That never happened. You just invented this. She was talking about the Bud Light brand and its past marketing not targeting people they wanted to sell beer to. Inclusion only feels exclusive to people that don't like who is being included. That's on you, not the people that want to include other people. This culture war garbage needs to end.
View on Reddit #3518966

-Handsome-Jim-@reddit

But it's marketing to a specific customer base. Bud Light is (or at least was up until this) effectively a lifestyle brand. Their commercials didn't really advertise quality beer so much as the kind of people who drink Bud Light drinking it and having a good time.

People who like that beer will probably go back to it when the hubbub dies down. Some people are still ragey about it because now it’s Pride Month. Bud Light is still the second most purchased beer in America so it’s not like they are in a death spiral. They’ll be fine. Especially now the summer started and people are likely to have more beer around than normal. I didn’t stop drinking it ‘out of protest’ and I don’t know anyone who did. I don’t really drink beer in the first place (I’m a wine and spirits kind of gal). If I do drink beer, I don’t drink shitty cheap beer like Bud Light (sorry Bud Light but you know you nasty). I opt for smaller breweries with unique flavors and things like ciders.

As much as I support the LGBTQ community and don’t think they deserve any of the hate they’ve been getting, from a business perspective Anheuser-Busch did a disservice to their shareholders. A public company’s primary objective is to maximize shareholder wealth, not destroy it. I understand doing things for social and ethical reasons to put the company in a better place in terms of reputation, but not weighing the financial risks or other possible consequences of such actions to any possible rewards is poor decision making and incredibly irresponsible. If there’s one thing I think everyone in business and finance should learn from this, never make a public political statement, whether it be in marketing, or on a company or an executive’s social media accounts, unless it directly pertains to your business. For example if you own an oil company, it’s within reason to protest carbon taxes, or if you’re the ceo of a marijuana company it’s reasonable to push for federal legalization. Again I don’t condone the hate the LGBTQ community has been getting, but this was a bad decision on AB’s part.

The town I live in had a pride parade last weekend and there were multiple peoples tits out and pasties everywhere leather sex clothing just walking around the park where dozens of children were playing lol that’s what I don’t want , like in what shape way or form is that ok and not sexual in any way? Have your parades, be the true you, date who you wanna date blah blah blah I really don’t mind… but why the need to just whip your tits out in public spaces while my children are just trying to swing or play at the local splash park is beyond me and needs to quit. City council is now discussing not having the parade again next year, but I’m sure they will cave under pressure.

For 99% of people I’ve talked to who expressed issues with trans people, it comes down to trans kids. Most people will agree adults should be able to do whatever they want but a *lot* of people have reservations about kids going on puberty blockers and stuff
View on Reddit #3521955

KJnotJK@reddit

Pediatrician here. Puberty blockers have been used on both cisgender and transgender kids for decades. They're completely safe. Cisgender children (children who aren't transgender) are often put on puberty blockers if they hit puberty early (precocious puberty) because of the emotional distress hitting puberty very early can cause. The use of puberty blockers in trans kids is similar. It stops puberty until they're old enough to make a decision about whether they want to transition further. Puberty blockers are not permanent. Once a child stops taking blockers (or the blocker is removed in the case of implants), they will start puberty normally. The only known side effect is that children on puberty blockers are often taller than they would've been without blockers since puberty causes the growth plates in your bones to close.
View on Reddit #3543289

CriticallyKarina@reddit

That doesn't make sense though. Puberty blockers are reversible and aren't only given to trans kids. My daughter who isn't trans went on puberty blockers when she was 8 until she was 10 because she started puberty too early. She's 11 now and she's doing fine.

View on Reddit #3535828

I feel like since same sex marriage is legal and widely supported (only 37% of Americans have a negative view of it in 2022 according to pew research), the religious right had to pick a new boogeyman. For decades they said that gay people were going after children for some reason and now that narrative has shifted into transgender people. They still dislike gay people of course, but it isn't really socially acceptable for them to say it openly anymore. There's a lot less trans people than gay people and that makes them an easier target to rally support against. Most conservative Christians have probably either never met a trans person or didn't realize that the trans people they met were trans which makes it harder to emphasize with than people like their family member who came out as gay which happens a lot more often. They see transgender people as an ideology rather than just people which honestly probably makes them an even more effective target than gay people ever were. I really worry about how much worse things will get for them.

Trust me, I’m under no illusions that corporations care about LGBT people nor do I think that alcohol companies are the backbone of American society. Their marketing, including slapping rainbows on things during June, are calculations meant to maximize profit (because that is the entire point of a corporation existing). What I’m concerned about is the insane backlash to a trans influencer being paid by a company to make a 30-second video on Instagram promoting their product. The vast majority of people wouldn’t even know Dylan Mulvaney exists if there wasn’t a conservative media ecosystem that elevates such things to manufacture culture war outrage among its base.

According to Citi, Busch volumes are down by -13.8% vs -12.2% and Stella Artois volumes down -9.9% vs -10.1% > Meanwhile, Coors Light saw its recent market share gains accelerate over the last two weeks.

Word, so somebody at Budweiser HQ decides to do some minor campaign with an influencer they likely didn’t do a lot of due diligence on, they probably do this 100 times per year. Suddenly everybody stops buying Bud Light? A lot of the discourse is about using Bud Light as a way to show other companies they shouldn’t do ANY stuff to support pride. Things seem to have quickly and suddenly turned not just transphobic but homophobic.
View on Reddit #3524156

EpicAura99@reddit

“This ideology”? Am I reading you correctly? For real? Being trans isn’t an ideology. That’s like saying ADHD is an ideology, or getting chemotherapy is an ideology. Nobody would *ever* choose to go through the immense struggle that I’ve seen my trans friends go through. Your transphobia is showing. Hiding behind people who can’t speak for themselves is always an excellent shield to excuse discrimination. Hell, teaching kids how to play football is far more dangerous to their future health than teaching them about trans people ever could be. So it’s not actually about their well-being, it’s about what you think is right.
View on Reddit #3518672

ghostwriter85@reddit

Gender ideology, not sure why that's confusing. The trans community is not one coherent ideological block, although it probably feels that way in your bubble (btw we all live in bubbles, I'm no different in that regard). Dylan represents one view on the trans experience but there are many others. Also not hiding behind anyone, not sure what gave you that impression. I'm firmly in the "this is a very complicated issue that is often oversimplified by both sides acting on incredibly limited information".
View on Reddit #3518794

Hm. I suppose I can see that. It showed Bud Light and Miller Lite, but ho ho ho there was only Miller. Not one single soul knew the difference. Bud Lite seems to still be struggling. Boycotts tend to be effective when there are ample alternatives and the cost of switching is low. Beer has so many options, all available at the same place, that participating requires essentially zero effort. Bud Lite also doesn't taste particularly good. Someone who switched to another beer as part of the boycott might not switch back if they found a beer they enjoy more, which isn't particularly difficult even the quality.

They wanted to protest, tell everybody they protested, and then get right back to Reddit. Same thing with the beer. None of these people really care if InBev gets “punished” or not. Why anyone drank that pisswater in the first place is beyond me. AB stock is down 21% this year, 10% in the last month. Whether this is due solely to the boycott or a combination of factors isn't clear, but sales of But Light are down at least 15% since Mulvaney's endorsement.

*shrug* dunno, and don't care. As my stance was back when the whole thing started up, I don't particularly care who they hire to promote their brand. That's their right and their decision. But it always has been, and likely always will be, a generic, crappy, macro-brewery beer. Like a lot of Americans, I have access to a lot of liquor stores, and a lot of them stock local micro brewery beers. Beers that are actually made with care and attention, genuine love of the craft, while supporting local businesses, and it simply doesn't hurt that they are better tasting. Budweiser can hire whoever they want to promote their brand - that isn't going to change how I already wasn't buying their product anyway.

The sales are still depressed. Its still going. Most boycotts fail but they tend to work better when the targeted product is easily replaceable. This is the case with Bud Light. It tastes like nothing, it is typical flavorless piss water beer that people buy fpr cheap. And I am a gay man and member of the LGBT community but even I think Bud Light messed up. I am not justifying the bigoted reaction I just think Bud Light drinkers were the wrong target for this marketing campaign. They seem to straight white men who like to watch sports with their bros drink and not fall asleep. I have seen old Bud Light ads with country music playing. You have to know who your customers are. And in my experience gays don't tend to drink beer but liquor especially vodka.

Idk of anyone who drinks bud light as their main beer, Busch is more popular here. I drink Yingling lager and when I can find it I like miller fortune. I see most people drinking Busch, naddy light, PBR, Miller light etc, rarely do I see anyone grab bud lite or Budweiser. Nobody even posts about it, it’s always freaking Busch light people get excited about lol. I personally don’t care that much but seeing trans advertising just physically irritates me a lot, but I also get irritated seeing commercials of all black people also because I don’t believe they are their because of there talent but because of skin color which annoys me. 13% of the population but 90% of commercials, having a trans ad is about the same thing in my book. Would I boycott a company for it? Probably not, does it aggravate me seeing it? Yes. I still use my Discover card and they host pride parades. But they don’t shove it in my face with specific ads so it’s easy to not care about.

Garth has been irritating conservatives for awhile. He is always very careful to avoid taking sides as far as politics in interviews but has definitely done a few things that have ruffled feathers. Trump was one of the 2 inaugurations since Jimmy Carter’s where he didn’t preform due to a scheduling conflict (the other inauguration he did not participate in was Reagan’s). He did preform for Biden which conservatives saw as adding insult to injury. He wore a (Deion) Sanders jersey when he played one of the stadiums (I don’t know which stadium but it was one where Sanders had either been a player or coached) on his stadium tour and people *lost their minds* thinking he was endorsing Bernie. He had a half sister who came out as a lesbian (I think sometime in the early 90s?) and was part of his band for awhile, she collaborated on ‘We Shall Be Free’ and died several years ago after battling cancer. There were country stations that refused to play the song at the time due largely to the line ‘when we’re free to love anyone we choose’.

While I'm not seeing 24 packs for $1.74 at Wally World, the price is still lower than it used to be and when every other beer on the shelf is gone, Bud Light remains. My favorite beer comes in 40's and is hard to obtain in this area. I tried a 40 od Bud Light and got pissed off because I was completely sober half an hour and $3.29 later. If I'm drinking the same amount of King Cobra, Natural Ice, Colt 45 or Olde English, I'm looking at a lower cost and higher alcohol content. I've been drinking malt liquor and Ice Beer for years because it stretches my funds and I get more for what I spend. I'll drink it if it's the only thing in the fridge/cooler at a friend's house, but I haven't spent more than $12 on Bud Light in my lifetime.

First, this may not be the best place for answers on this question, as most of the answers when this boycott first got started were wrong. This sub simply doesn't have the target demographic of bud drinkers. No, they haven't regained their users, and so this may be permanent as drinkers may have found other beers to substitute. Bud advertising has long been aspirational: they have pictures of people doing cool things and such, with the idea that you could have that life if you drank bud. Apparently, using a trans-woman as an aspirational ad to young men hasn't worked out so well for them.
