Isn't pressing charges an American thing? He can report it to the police, who probably won't do anything. Personally I'd be smashing stink bombs each time until they fuck off somewhere else.

My only memory of that is him falling into freezing cold water fully dressed, and then keeping the clothes on and being fine. They just air dried I guess.

I thought it was paedophilia? Obviously there isn't, but people of a certain age still think this on occasion, I've heard it first hand from people who should know better. Such that this was the justification for chemical castration, as they thought they were protecting kids. To us it sounds utterly barbaric.

Are there any "UK vs US" differences where you feel America gets it right?

I totally agree btw. The negativity shown towards someone who wants to better themselves has always appeared ridiculous to me. The can do attitude of them has always been something to admire in my view. Even if I do cringe at the woos.

Overall I think you're right, but all that wooing shit they do, and high fives etc - is pretty cringe. I once looked up the woo thing, it comes from native Americans apparently, which is interesting.

I once met a lady from Liverpool, she was probably 60, and this was perhaps a decade ago. She said she got bullied a lot at school before her mother had a job. Her mother was a dinner lady. What in the actual fuck is that. She was insistent that it wasn't because of the job itself, just that she was employed.

What is Britain's greatest invention?

Posted by LochNessMonsterMunch@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 264 comments

OneDropOfOcean@reddit

Well he's not wrong. Someone would have pieced it together around the same time if he hadn't. Aren't there quite a few inventions by multiple people at the same time, but we only know the ones who were successful at getting it patented first. Once the surrounding conditions and technology is in place, and with a need for it, it will happen sooner or later. Pretty sure the phone, tv, radio etc would have been invented regardless of who actually did it in our history.

Agreed upon the higher ups, as well as legal. This needs escalating up immediately. It's also severe arse covering territory if it does go badly, you need to prove you did everything reasonable.

I used to work near Covent Garden and saw Lee Ryan just cycling in circles around convent garden, collecting girls phone numbers. I walked past probably 2 hours apart and he was still doing it. This was years after they were initially successful. It was pretty twatty of him, but at the same time.. can you really blame the guy.

How should I prepare my son for school so he doesn't get bullied?

Posted by Mundane-Proposal-520@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 469 comments

OneDropOfOcean@reddit

I'd 2nd this. My school experience regarding bullying was to basically make yourself not a target. If/when someone tries their luck with it, and they probably will, I think you 2 options... your wit or a fist. For the wit, a retort said with a little humour and/confidence will deter most, as they don't want to be embarrassed. For the fist, give the person a subtle jab to the stomach, not in a public place, ideally with just the two of you present. That way you don't stir up a shit storm and the message gets across.

I'm in UK, and my friend had it. You typed in the song code into the phone, and it would show onscreen as you typed, kinda like teletext. The song would then usually play within about half an hour. So it was definitely real in our case.

How do you get over the fear of talking to women you find attractive?

Posted by DescriptionFuture851@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 158 comments

OneDropOfOcean@reddit

Not sure you ever do. But you got to suck it up, get knocked back a few times and learn from it. Ultimately, you're gonna have to care less and realise that women aren't aliens, a great conversation will fulfil a good chunk of what they want from a potential partner. tl;dr don't overthink it, be accepting of a knock back, and shag a minger to get some practice.

Is it normal in the UK to just… tolerate a career you don't really like?

Posted by Efe_mert_mete@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 270 comments

OneDropOfOcean@reddit

No. The majority of the comments I've scrolled through can be summarised as yes, tough shit. (But not a very thorough study). What you need is a career coach, and beware 90% are bullshit charlatans. But, a good one can draw out what really drives you and help you find something else.. which is extremely likely to be outside of the civil service. Obviously it depends on where you live and what you're doing, but I'd recommend giving it go, but doing a lot of research first. It changed my life for one.

Right hand side rule. Do not walk through the crowd, stick to the far right and walk right around it. It's amazing how many people do not do this and instead all cram together 1/2 way up and just assume it'll get worse... just keep walking around and it's often pretty sparse up there. If the entrance is on the right however, go to the left. Don't ask me why it's usually the right, it just is.

What was The day In The UK actually like after The 2005 London Bombings?

Posted by Flowerofthesouth88@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 159 comments

OneDropOfOcean@reddit

Yep. Same thing happened on 9/11 too. I know this sounds insane to some people. But as I said, I sat at work several hours after it all happened and someone said "I'm glad this happened, I would have done it too". If he is saying that at work, on the day, in london, infront of his colleagues, he's also sure as fuck saying it to his kids.

My parents were teachers and they tried to do a minutes silence. Except several children in both classes refused as their parents told them it was a good thing that it had happened. This was in London. I'd almost had found it far fetched accept someone at my work said it too, the day it happened, after we'd all finally got to work, via trains and were all sat around a big screen watching the news.

OneDropOfOcean@reddit

If that would be your reaction to such a comment, it would probably be the right thing not to have kids. I was on the fence for a very long time and had them later in life than most, but, I get why that person said as there's an element of truth in it. It's basically a new form of love that I'd not been exposed to before. It's fucking exhausting though and completely changes your life, so I would never, ever, judge anyone who said it wasn't for them. It would be very understandable.

Can Thames Water executives be held to account?

I'd guess it's either due to pension funds having invested in it, or that the government is lining up things in the background to nationalise it properly, but isn't quite ready.

Perhaps I'm being naive, but would the contract between the private company and the government who awarded them that contract not state that x needs to be achieved, or y needs to be performed as part of the running of it's organisation before profits can be extracted... If the details of the contract are not abided by and bonuses/dividends are still paid... is that not fraud? If fraud, then fines and prison sentences is what normally happens to people/companies is it not..

Good point, why on earth didn't OFTWAT step up far sooner. It was clear that Thames Water wasn't investing the money where it needed to be, and was also paying dividends and bonuses.
