How can I deal with teenagers causing nuisance?
Posted by Monoferno@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 143 comments
I live in a relatively peaceful town. However, for the last few days, there are 10-15 teenagers age 13-16 gathering right in front of my house and acting out really loud. Playing loud music, swearing, screaming etc. Trouble is, it is too close to my garden \~1m and they can directly see into my house through patio door.
First I tried to warn them. I came out and explained the noise is too much and kindly asked them to lower the volume. They did. However after I walked inside, the music got louder and they started dancing and taunting looking directly inside. Well I went outside again and asked what the deal is, again kindly, as an adult. Group's insigator kid started swearing at me and threatening me. He was also saying we are minors in between lines for some reason. I also find a hip chain in my garden, either thrown or placed. One of the kids walked over and I handed the chain to him, he dapped me and I walked back inside my house after the situation seemingly de-escalated. They started again afterwards and this lasted until 21:30 with addition of glares inside, verbal harrassment. I called the police.
2 police officers first spoke to the kids I assume, then spoke to me and my wife seperately at the same time. In the end, they didn't find our complaint serious and marked it as a noise complaint and basically dismissed us. I asked if it is ok for them to be this loud, and he said it is a public place so yeah. He also warned us not to video them as they are minors?
Second day, we were psychologically in a terrible state, couldn't eat or sleep. Our landlord advised us to stay in and don't show ourselves, hoping them to get bored to leave. We closed the patio door and blinds in this summer heat and stayed inside. This encouraged them and they started walking, and riding bike in my garden, banged on my patio door, threw a rock which damaged the door frame, and throw socks at my garden. We made another official complaint to the police online. Called my landlord and the police again on the 3rd day.
Landlord installed fences to keep them out and contacted police himself as the rock thrown caused damage to his property. A nice police officer came and explained the situation, said they will increase patrol in the area, hang a sign stating increased patrol, and check the cameras nearby for evidence of rock thrown. I also asked about video evidence which he said it is ok as it is a public place and to avoid crime. He left and came back shortly to say that they have identified and asked if we want to press charges. We said no, to not escalate the situation (they know our address) and the officer said he will speak with the kid's father. After that day, we felt more at peace.
Come today, kids are bit more controlled with noise, but they are still acting like animals. We learned that there are multiple complaints and they even vandalised the public area, throwing shopping carts, littering etc. Apparently police weren't a deterrent for these kids.
It almost feels like law is on their side to do whatever they want. I can understand it is a public place but the whole neighbourhood is suffering because of them.
What to do in these type of situations?
ems-x-82517@reddit
The one and only time I had an issue with kids climbing into my garden and being destructive, I let my German Shepherd out without hesitation. One of them sliced their leg open badly trying to get back out and over the fence, and mg dog chased the rest down to the end of the street. I don't know what happened to the one who cut their leg because once I'd gone to retrieve my dog and got back home, the little piece of vermin was gone. Never happened again and that was seven years ago.
External-Praline-451@reddit
OP, is this even true? Pressing charges is not a thing in the UK...looking forward to that being explained.
Ok-Constant-2683@reddit
Who told you this?
Monoferno@reddit (OP)
Well the neighbpurhood police asked us if we want to press charges with the video evidence. If I understood correct in the heat of moment, not sure, but he added we can do it within 6 months. That is also why we initially held back to see how the situation plays out.
gse2026@reddit
Look up 'liver of sulphur' its ridiculously bad smelling, like really bad rotten eggs. A few drops in a hot bucket of hot water stinks bad. Its upto you what you do with it..
Monoferno@reddit (OP)
I saw a few comments like yours and actually the idea is tempting, however it is still a public place with a big local store so there are a lot of people passing by. Actions like what you suggested would put me in a difficult spot instead.
gse2026@reddit
No just leave the bucket behind your fence for a few hours, the smell will force them away
squigs@reddit
Get a decent speaker and play opera music or classical.
Seriously apparently this does work.
Monoferno@reddit (OP)
My neighbour said they tried playing Elvis but that didn't have any effect.
And honestly I think it is very childish and puts you lower than them.
squigs@reddit
I don't think Elvis is uncool enough to work.
I don't think childishness matters here is your goal is to deter them.
Own_Bonus2424@reddit
what u do is u go see the chavy kids dad and you explain to him how you like your peace and quiet and how you really hate it when someone disturbs it
Monoferno@reddit (OP)
I don't know their address but police spoke to one of the kids' dad. They have also put up a facebook post in local page and it seems to attract some attention. They are patrolling daily as well so fingers crossed, things are getting better.
Real-Box-7144@reddit
I don’t mind kids playing outside but if they’re ever being a nuisance, only one occasion springs to mind where they were actively winding up my dog through the window getting her to bark, I went outside and started cleaning my front garden.
I said hello to them and continued doing my jobs, cleaned the windows etc. Never said a word about what they were doing and remained polite. They didn’t like an adult was near them so they moved off and went to the park.
So you know kids love a wind up and if they can get you to come out and argue with them they’ll do it even more.
Monoferno@reddit (OP)
I think I am not that lucky with my teen group because these kids are mental. Yelling, wretching, swearing... They are really mental.
And I didn't argue with them at all. I just asked nicely as you would do to an adult, no adrenaline, no high voice. They were able to wind themselves for some reason. My guess is one of the kids' ego was hurt and stuff happened.
Minimum_Salad9372@reddit
Go hang out with them. They'll be gone in a heartbeat
Monoferno@reddit (OP)
I really thought about doing this, because this would make things less interesting to them.
But then I thought what to do if they come into physical confrontation. 16 yo boys tend tondo that and if I put hands on them, law would be on their side.
KoraLily@reddit
Multiple options.
Cameras at the front of the house. It's public so there's no laws against this as long as it's clear you're not purposefully pointing them into someone's house. As far as I'm aware there's nothing illegal about posting the videos on social media in order to identify them or give them to the police.
Stop pandering to them and press charges.
Outdoor speaker - shopping centres used to use them and play a frequency that only teenagers can hear. This was a massive deterrent and got them to move on.
Get angry. They're literally harrassing you. You have the right to go out and shout at them. Call the police. Do whatever as long as you don't end up in a physical altercation.
Neighbourhood watch if that's a thing. Gather everyone and march them away.
On a less "moral" side.
If your shower is on that side, or a large bucket of water, throw it out of the window. Or get water balloons.
Riding bikes on your property? Some hidden nails in the grass will stop that.
Got a friend with a big dog? Borrow it for a few nights.
There's probably other things you can do too.
Monoferno@reddit (OP)
Cameras are getting installed in a week.
I won't press charges because I am afraid of their parents' retaliation. They all know my address while I don't know any of theirs.
Speakers or other aggressive methods won't do because it is also a busy pathway for a store.
Getting angry might put me in a guilty position. My landlord had a similar experience where kids put the blame on him, saying he threatened them and other stuff.
Marching neighbours requires effort. I am working and don't have that kind of time or energy.
Nails would hurt the cats and birds that comes to my garden.
Dog can put me in a difficult position.
Thanks for your advice anyway.
Dear-Combination-159@reddit
My wife and I went through similar harassment. Rocks, eggs, broken fence, etc. Steaming off the eggs bleached the new brickwork...it still looks patchy now, decades later. A sale board post was jammed through our letterbox, cracking the UPVC door. We ensured the insurance replacement did not have a letterbox. The police chased the vandals off a few times, but no arrests were made. My local council put up C.CT.V. which seemed to calm things down, but it was removed after a month as it was needed elsewhere. A few random incidents followed, but these eventually stopped. The two year long experience ruined our lives and left us wishing we'd never moved here. So you are not alone. 🥺 🍌
Monoferno@reddit (OP)
Oh thanks for sharing your experience and sorry for what happened to you.
I am now seeing local police officers speaking to these kids everyday while they patrol the area and their numbers are slowly decreasing. But as you may already understand, what is done is done. I didn't know that a bunch of kids would affect my psychology this much. I used to walk in my garden and enjoy the fresh air, now every time I look, I get this anxiety. I guess it is still fresh in my mind.
Pure-Dead-Brilliant@reddit
Pressing charges is an American thing. In England and Wales the police gather evidence and present the case to the Crown Prosecution Services (CPS) and it’s them who decide whether or not to charge the suspect. Scotland and Northern Ireland are similar but it’s the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Services (COPFS), and Public Prosecution Services (PPS) respectively who decide whether to charge the suspect. If you declined to be a witness then the police have no evidence to build a case to present to the applicable prosecution service.
I’m also unclear as to why you initially contacted your landlord in the first place. Realistically what do you expect him to do about people on public property?
You can’t simply wring your hands and expect someone else to sort this for you whilst you yourself are not prepared to take action. Start keeping a diary, note exact dates, times, and specific behaviours (e.g. loud music, property damage, trespassing). Gather evidence which is where I disagree with the police officer, get CCTV or a video doorbell to record what’s going on outside. The fact the perpetrators are minors is irrelevant, you’d not be filming them naked. Contact the local authority’s anti-social behaviour and/or environmental health team. Dial 101 when the anti-social behaviour starts up. Talk with your neighbours and encourage them to contact the local authority’s anti-social behaviour and police too.
If that’s all too much for you then serve notice to end the tenancy and move.
Monoferno@reddit (OP)
I called the landlord initially to ask for advise, and because they damaged the property.
I witheld being a witness due to my own concerns, but also hoping police to link this to complaints from the people in the area, hence why they put up signs and patrol in 2 days.
Cctv is on its way. Initial concern was because teenage boys were half naked due to hot weather.
Instead of keeping a diary, I made official complaints on the police website and got incident numbers to quote if it happens again. It is all logged already.
Any other advice is welcome. Thank you for your explanation.
Pure-Dead-Brilliant@reddit
The police and local authority need evidence to act e.g. witnesses. I do understand your concern about being identified, especially if they know where you live, but there is a trade-off there, the less evidence available, the more likely it gets treated as low-level noise rather than antisocial behaviour.
You’re over-thinking the CCTV thing. Shirtless boys and men in hot weather are socially acceptable, people only get excited about female nips being on display. You’re not setting out to specifically film those teens, your intent is to film outside your home for security purposes.
There are deterrents available like a “mosquito” ultrasonic device can deter groups of teenagers, but it’s a bit controversial and can create neighbour issues of its own (it doesn’t just target the specific group, and some adults can hear it too).
taytotaythree@reddit
Oh, come on. No such thing as pressing charges in the UK, certainly not in the sense that a copper would give you that option. This is all in the last few days and your landlord has already installed fences. A scally with a hip chain. Blinds on your patio door that you didn't use while these imaginary kids were peering into your house. Etc Etc Etc. Nice try weirdo, 2/10, have a bit more of a think next time.
squigs@reddit
I think there might be to a degree. That is whether you want the police to arrest them, and ask the CPS to press charges or however it works. I mean it's not actually OP pressing charges but the verbal shorthand might exist.
Low_Restaurant_1509@reddit
It's not even a thing in the US, atleast not for police involment, civil charges sure but that's a whole other ball game.
notthedoodaa@reddit
Shopping carts?
YchYFi@reddit
They are a migrant to the UK.
letsgetthisbread2812@reddit
This sounds like my worst nightmare, I'm really sorry you have to deal with this.
I don't have any advice but know that you are not alone in this situation and unfortunately feral children are becoming increasingly common and feel enabled by the powerless legal system.
I have a neighbour downstairs who blasts loud music all the time and it was causing a severe impact on my mental health and everytime he would start playing music after coming home from a stressful day at work it would really mess up my mind. I would literally feel my heart beat faster everytime yet nothing was done despite knocking on their door and writing them letters and having my landlord text them.
lukusmaca@reddit

Chickenhugga@reddit
Is it up to you to press charges or not? If you’re renting?
AlternativeParfait13@reddit
There’s no such thing as pressing charges in English law. Aggrieved parties don’t make decisions on charging suspects.
Monoferno@reddit (OP)
Because we are living here and the victims, officer asked us. I told him if our landlord could do it instead. He said he could but they would still need our supportive statement. Asked theblandlord, and he also opted to wait for now.
Serious_Badger_4145@reddit
"It almost feels like law is on their side to do whatever they want."
But you chose not to press charges? The law can't do anything if you don't press charges. What is it that you'd like the police to do?
ukbot-nicolabot@reddit
A top level comment (one that is not a reply) should be a good faith and genuine attempt to answer the question
WhaleMeatFantasy@reddit
Hang on. The press long charges but is what’s odd. You can’t do that in the UK. It’s a US thing. So now the whole story sounds fishy.
YchYFi@reddit
They are an immigrant so of course their wording will be different.
WhaleMeatFantasy@reddit
However you phrase it, the police wouldn’t have asked them if they want to press charges. We don’t do that.
Voodoopulse@reddit
So you keep saying but it doesn't mean the rest of the story adds up, in fact you've said it so much I wonder if you're the op
YchYFi@reddit
Have you seen OPs post history they post in the UKvisa sub?
Voodoopulse@reddit
Yes, can't see your history though
YchYFi@reddit
Yes and lots of people do hide it since Reddit brought the feature in. No big deal.
YchYFi@reddit
Yes and that is intentional.
ScaryButt@reddit
There's a lot not adding up with the story imo. Everything has supposedly happened within "a few days" and no way so the police or landlords work that fast!
Monoferno@reddit (OP)
Landlord is a good guy and the reason police took quick action is either because of multiple complaints or the landlord being a well known man in the community with good contacts.
Serious_Badger_4145@reddit
I think op is north American they're probably just using the terminology they're familiar with. It is normal for police to ask if you want to go ahead and record an official statement or would rather let things lie
cold_tap_hot_brew@reddit
I don’t think the concept of pressing charges applies in the U.K. though?
External-Praline-451@reddit

theotherquantumjim@reddit
A quick look through their profile would have established they are probably not a bot, given the account age and karma amongst other things. The quirks of language are likely because they are not a UK native. It would also explain the somewhat naive expectation that the police would do something useful.
No-Television-9862@reddit
There’s a bad neighbour story every few days on here
GraphicDesignerSam@reddit
You absolutely can choose to place or not place charges in theUK.
We went through similar stuff with teenage kids. It only stopped when I installed a video doorbell and a (dummy) cctv camera with sign saying it is in operation 24/7
cold_tap_hot_brew@reddit
Nah, I’ve since verified that the concept is similar because a victim can make or break a case with their testimony but there is no way to press charges in the U.K. the police or cps are the ones who determine if there is enough evidence to take the suspect to court.
ChristyCloud@reddit
The police may ask you if you wish to press charges, this effectively means that they think there is a case; quite often specifically a case that will require your testimony.
Often they simply won't bring charges if you're not interested, as it means they're likely missing key evidence, as well as the aggrieved party not actually caring, so in the majority of cases why waste resources.
They can bring charges without your cooperation, and in some scenarios can compel testimony. Generally when it is perceived to be "in the public interest"
External-Praline-451@reddit
It doesn't, it makes me think the whole story is fake.
fimbleinastar@reddit

yesterdaysomelette22@reddit
Correct. The cps charges you here. Individuals can’t charge anything - apart from your phone. The original post is a fantasy at best.
YchYFi@reddit
They aren't British by birth but by citizenship. Very xenophobic.
Serious_Badger_4145@reddit
Only colloquially its not up to op its up to the cps but the cps do take the victims preferences in to account which in this case means they'd be likely to not press charges themselves
cold_tap_hot_brew@reddit
Interesting. Helpful & clarifying answer. Thank you.
TargetEnvironmental1@reddit
It doesn’t. But most people understand it as supporting a complaint/providing a witness statement.
In any case, OP can’t reasonably expect the Police to be able to do anything meaningful other than moving the youths on unless they provide a statement.
cold_tap_hot_brew@reddit
Ah ok. I getcha. Thanks.
Literal brain sometimes needs a shove in the right direction.
miemcc@reddit
No such thing in the UK.
AndrewHinds67@reddit
In order to press charges, those scumbags need to be arrested. They haven't been arrested so therefore charges cannot be brought.
strawbebbymilkshake@reddit
The law does everything without you pressing charges. Victims don’t press charges in the U.K. You fell for a fake ragebait story from a yank
YchYFi@reddit
In the UK we don't press charges. It will be up to police or CPS to prosecute.
Kelsiersdaggers@reddit
That’s not a real thing. Just like this silly story.
DeepVEintThrombosis@reddit
In the UK you don't get to press charges, the CPS review the evidence and decide whether the case is worth pursuing
IntelligentCitron917@reddit
Hasn't always been this way though. I had to press charges years ago against an ex partner. Police couldn't do anything unless I was prepared to press charges against him.
Years after we split the law changed which gave Police powers to press charges themselves if there is sufficient evidence.
Serious_Badger_4145@reddit
I'm aware but that's the terminology op is using so I'm meeting them where they're at
Your preferences do have a bearing on cps' decision so choosing not to record a statement does have an impact
IndividualCurious322@reddit
The CPS and police can go ahead with criminal prosecution regardless of the victim/witness not wishing to press charges as it's at their sole discretion. OP can say they don't wish to take it further, and that will be noted, but wont influence the decision.
Serious_Badger_4145@reddit
OP has stated they don't want to, as no serious crime has been committed they're respecting OP's wishes. Of course if someone was murdered preference wouldn't come in to it but it feels to me the police aren't really doing anything wrong here
I respect that it's a difficult situation and I'm sorry for OP I'm just not sure what solution they're hoping for here
Monoferno@reddit (OP)
A valid point you made. The area they are hanging out is also affecting the local store as well. Their manager was also complaining to the police. So maybe prevent those kind of gatherings in the vicinity? Or put a patrol to deter antisocial behaviour.
This isn't a common occurence. My neighbour says that it is the first time she saw something like this in 15 years.
IndividualCurious322@reddit
Yes, he can state he doesn't want to, but it's still upto the CPS and police if a prosecution is made or its taken further. They probably don't deem it serious enough, or to not be in the public interest.
The whole "I dont wish to press charges" thing and then the case being dropped from that alone is a thing from fictional soap operas and has no basis in real life.
Busy-Salt6884@reddit
Without supporting victim statements the charges will fail to pass the full code test. Victimless prosecutions are rare and generally reserved for more serious matters
Monoferno@reddit (OP)
To maintain public order? I don't want to put a target on my back. They got nothing to lose, but I got lots.
C0nnectionTerminat3d@reddit
pressing charges might just scare them into stopping or at least moving their hang out spot to a different area.
Motion activated sprinklers could work. If you haven’t already, install a camera and publicly shame them on facebook. Their parents and relatives may just recognise them and sort it out if they don’t know what’s going on already.
geeered@reddit
It's a very reasonable concern they'll come back at night wearing masks with some bigger rocks and chuck them through the windows too.
But yes, one of the reasons these things keep happening is because people are two scared to do anything about it and often the law doesn't help enough to mitigate the risks.
Emperors-Peace@reddit

You're correct. Cameras can be placed in public spaces without violating any laws. OP is probably worried because they're underage but that only applies to certain locations.
I'd add that you can also put this on social media. I'm sure their parents would be mortified.

PKblaze@reddit
The "last few days" yet you've already managed to get the police round, had the property damaged and fixed and a fence put up by a landlord?
Monoferno@reddit (OP)
Not fixed. Damage is there still. Police came of course after such an event that involves vandalism, entering my garden, and damagin my property. Whole neighbourhood is fed up with these kids. I cant fathom the number of complaints they received.
cloudmountainio@reddit
Press charges and hope it calms down rather than escalates.
Or move house.
Those are the only options you have.
OneDropOfOcean@reddit
Isn't pressing charges an American thing? He can report it to the police, who probably won't do anything.
Personally I'd be smashing stink bombs each time until they fuck off somewhere else.
cloudmountainio@reddit
Yeah it’s an American thing. The OP used the term and said the police asked him if he wanted to press charges and he said no. So I used the term in my response as I got what he was saying even if the terminology is wrong. I think only the CPS can decide if it’s going to go anywhere.
Thinking about it though, I don’t actually know the UK terminology to describe the situation with the police? Maybe something like doesn’t wish to formally proceed with the complaint?
If anyone wants to chime in and school me I’d quite like to know.
Lmao, stink bombs are a great idea tbf.
Monoferno@reddit (OP)
Police asked us whether to press charges or not, so I guess UK has it as well. Don't forget it isn't just nuisance, but involves property damage as well.
I am afraid they would report it as a chemical attack and I would be put in a bad situation.
