What’s the single most important factor that helps a car reach 300k+ miles?

Posted by EvelynClede@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 344 comments

OkTale8@reddit

Driving a lot is probably the biggest factor. My Focus has 120,000 miles, but I’ve only been averaging 4,000 miles per year since COVID. My calculation says it’s gonna take me another 45 years to hit 300,000 miles.

Are smaller turbocharged engines truly more efficient long-term, or do they wear out faster than larger naturally aspirated ones?

Does This sub Underestimate AWD?

Posted by Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 801 comments

OkTale8@reddit

Yeah I mean if you’ve got a BMW M240 and you like to stomp on the loud pedal leaving stop signs, AWD is clutch. However, most folks here asking about AWD probably never go over 25% throttle and certainly are not worried about how fast they can leave a stop sign or exit a corner.

If American cars are unreliable, why do domestic pick up trucks have such high resale value?

The problem with all seasons, is that your on sub optimal tires all year long, not just during the winter. They have less grip always.

Are fat tire eBikes actually worth it for sand or trails?

Do you really feel that much difference between 300-500HP car?

Posted by Overit2137@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 270 comments

OkTale8@reddit

Yeah except most modern 4 cylinders also come with a turbo and make bucket loads of torque down low. My Focus is making 350 ft lbs out of its little 2L. I’ve never driven a naturally aspirated six cylinder that’s as powerful down low and unfortunately turbo sixes aren’t that common.

When did 350-700hp become slow?

Posted by Clutch3sSS@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 1167 comments

OkTale8@reddit

Idk, but my bolt on and tuned Focus ST feels quick enough for me. It’s very rare that I don’t have enough power to out accelerate 99% of the cars around me.

The $111k people's car of today.

I mean, it might be Mustang GT money… but isn’t it also faster than a Mustang GT while also have four doors and four proper seats? You gotta step up to the Dark Horse to beat the Golf R and that’s another 20k.

If money were no object, what car would you be driving right now?

You can’t even get a decent set of wheels for $400. Shit, $400 might not even cover a tuneup on a decent bike depending on what needs replacing.

I feel like a nearly thirty pound hybrid doesn't even get close to "decent", if I was going to go that route I'd just jump on marketplace and pick up an old Trek FX for $200.

This question is always absolutely whack. You can’t even get a decent bicycle without a motor for less than $1,000. I don’t understand why people think adding a motor would make it cheaper.

Why are e-bikes priced similar to motorcycles?

Most of the increasing cycling fatalities in the U.S. are caused by "light trucks" (SUVs, pickups, etc.)

OkTale8@reddit

Dead is dead. Also, the SUV in my experience has better visibility for the driver. That’s why most people tend to prefer driving them.

So… in a time where most Americans are switch from compact cars to compact SUVs, deaths by compact SUVs are up? No shit. I feel like these statistics need to control for the change in vehicle type. I’m not sure that I’d rather be hit by a 3200 lbs hatchback or a 3800 lbs suv. Same result imo.

Am I really meant to believe people save cash for every sports car they buy?

Posted by Many-Software-9663@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 447 comments

OkTale8@reddit

Nope, the statistics would tell you most people finance, most people don’t hold onto their cars very long, and most people can’t afford their car payments. Still, I put together my 2026 budget today and have about $4,000/month after all of my expenses. It probably wouldn’t take me too long to save for a car. I just have a habit of blowing my cash on things not related to cars lol.

Does an ebike being "legal" even matter?

OkTale8@reddit

See you’re just making things up. If you actually had the experience you claim you’d know how obnoxious your claims are. No one’s casually doing 25-30 mph. It’s possible to do those speeds in a group or race scenario. However, for those rides that do exceed 25 mph there is absolutely nothing casual about them.

OkTale8@reddit

Have you read anything you’ve posted? It’s all nonsense. Unless you’re some sort of genetic specimen, you’re simply not casually cruising around at 25-30 mph on a nearly four decade old clunker.

Does an ebike being "legal" even matter?

Posted by chuckwolf@reddit | ebikes | View on Reddit | 292 comments

OkTale8@reddit

Yes — a Cannondale Black Lightning is a clunker. That doesn’t mean it was bad in its day. It means it’s a 30-year-old aluminum race frame. Nothing about it is objectively better than a current generation Cannondale SuperSix EVO. Modern bikes are lighter, more aerodynamic, stiffer where it matters, more compliant where it counts, and paired with dramatically better wheels, tires, and drivetrains. Aluminum race bike from the 90s? Cool. Historic. Fast for its era. Better than modern carbon race bikes? No. And the bigger issue isn’t the bike — it’s the speed claim. Unless you’re in the top 0.01% of riders, you are not casually rolling around at 25–30 mph solo on flat terrain. That’s not “Brenda and Bill Sunday hobby pace.” That’s threshold-level power output. Sustaining 25 mph solo generally means putting out roughly 280–320+ watts depending on rider size and position. That’s trained racer fitness. Yes, group rides can average 22–25 mph — with drafting. That’s completely different. Drafting can reduce required power by 20–40%. Solo speed is another universe. Invoking Tour de France and Shimano doesn’t change the physics. Shimano being “the standard” doesn’t magically turn a vintage aluminum frame into modern superbike performance. And pros ride cutting-edge equipment for a reason — marginal gains matter. No one is saying a Black Lightning was junk. It was a legit bike in its time. But pretending that 25–30 mph solo cruising speeds are normal for recreational cyclists — or that a 90s aluminum race bike is somehow on par with modern aero race machines — just isn’t grounded in reality. You can love old gear without rewriting physics.

I’m going to need evidence of you casually doing 25-30 mph on a clunker. May want to get yourself to the Tour if that’s really true.

You’d be surprised most people actually can’t go anywhere near 15 mph on a traditional bicycle. Average speeds are actually probably closer to 8-12 mph.

They’re motorcycles! 🤬

Posted by BigRobCommunistDog@reddit | ebikes | View on Reddit | 266 comments

OkTale8@reddit

Fair enough. Yeah 15 mph is pretty slow. I think for inner city riding that’s fine, but out in the sticks needs to be higher. Then again, I always come back to why exactly does an electric bike need to go faster? I mean, casual cyclists don’t go faster than 15 mph anywhere and guys who can go faster typically have no interest in an electric bicycle. Then someone inevitably says “but they need to keep up with traffic because they don’t feel safe” and my response is well… if I felt like I needed to keep up with traffic I’d take my ruckus, grom, or street triple that day. All of which have two wheels, are perfectly legal, an keep up with traffic just fine.

I'm gonna say that the bike was going way too fast for the sidewalk.

OkTale8@reddit

I mean, looking ahead wouldn’t have helped the truck driver here as the motorcycle rider came from behind on the walkway at a speed faster than the cars on the road were traveling. It’s the same kind of thing that happens in the highway with lane splitting motorcycles. When the motos are going about ten mph faster than the flow they’re easy to spot, but when they come from behind at Mach 1 there’s zero chance to see them.

Going 30 mph on a regular bicycle takes A LOT of effort and isn’t really sustainable. Not to mention guys who can sustain speeds approaching 30 mph tend to just ride in the road with cars and no one’s arguing that electric bikes can’t ride on the road.

Right… I mean even on my actual motorcycle, I always slow down a tad and prepare for an emergency stop as I cross intersections. This guy just sent it with no regard for traffic. You gotta read the environment when you’re in a motorcycle and this guy didn’t do that at all.

Visibility on modern pickup trucks is pretty good. In this scenario, we could have replaced the truck with a Miata with its top down and the driver still wouldn’t have seen the motorcycle. The motorcycle in this case just comes from way too far back at way too high of a speed in an area they don’t belong for the truck driver to have had any chance of seeing them.

I'm gonna say that the bike was going way too fast for the sidewalk.

Yep… this is basically the electric equivalent to a small displacement dual sport dirt bike. Yet there’s a good chunk of folks on this Reddit who seem to have convinced themselves this is a bicycle. If the rider was instead in a TW200 absolutely no one would be defending his sidewalk usage despite the TW200 being a s slower vehicle.

Most modern turbo engines make more power with premium. Idk about you, but if I’ve paid for a turbo, I’m paying for the proper gas to make all of the power.

I have a 2014 Focus ST that I bought new. I still love this car. At this point, I’m just going to drive it into the ground… but it only has 100,000 miles in it and is still in very good shape. So it could be awhile. I am thinking about maybe picking up a Mustang though, but it would be in addition to the Focus.

Has anyone else lost interest in cars now that they're into adulthood and they're realizing that they'll probably never be able to afford anything cool?
