How much wattage on an outlet is ok?

Posted by RickatoniYam@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 7 comments

MrByteMe@reddit

This is a much better psu calculator - [https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator](https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator) Your pc will only draw what it needs from the wall, no matter the rating of the psu. Most average systems draw less than 600 watts total unless you have some super high end system. The typical wall outlet is rated for 1500 watts, so you are more than likely well within that limit even with the other things plugged into the outlet.

Why Are Apps Like Armoury Crate Called Bloatware?

Posted by PCbuildinggoat@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 61 comments

MrByteMe@reddit

Most of these apps prioritize visual looks over functionality and code efficiency. So they use a lot more resources than they should and typically have a lot of bugs. I’d guess that most are programmed by interns rather than experienced coders.

Creative used to be the biggest name in pc accessories. Now I’m not sure if they’re even still around. BTW - that’s a dialup modem.

It’s 2020 all over again. RTX 5000 series already out of stock, waiting list, and overpriced. This sucks I dread building pcs.

Is 16gb vram still future proof for gaming? What games might struggle?

Posted by BoBoGaijin@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 511 comments

MrByteMe@reddit

By definition, there is no such thing as 'future proof'. But I'd consider 16GB vram the *minimum* for any upper tier gpu to get the most life out of it.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 appears in first Geekbench OpenCL & Vulkan leaks

Well, it might be more than the 5090, but I suspect not as good as it was last generation. Ain't no way the average gamer is going to be able to buy a 5070 for $549.

Nvidia reveals that more than 80% of RTX GPU owners (20/30/40-series) turn on DLSS in PC games.

I don't believe that I've ever turned DLSS on. Ever. My 1440 screen is only 165Hz and my 4070TS does just fine without it. I do like RT thought. Pretty.

I've got a Seiko SNK809 automatic I got from Amazon for $65 years ago and an LL Bean Quartz field watch with Swiss movement that takes abuse like nothing else - it even went through the washing machine once and keeps perfect time. In today's gadget oriented world, I like to have something 'real' on my wrist. There are enough smart devices tracking my every move as it is.

Vuarnets were the definitive shades for the cool prep kids in my area (VT). Ray Bans were acceptable, but Vuarnets were superior. I couldn't afford Vuarnets, so I went for the Bolle' cateye clones. They were actually pretty nice.

People tend to exaggerate what you need in 1440P but you don't need a 500+ dollar GPU just to experience 1440P.

It seems like it wasn't very long ago when adjusting video settings to balance graphics vs gameplay was a completely normal thing to do, and most systems fell into the 'normal' category. And if you encountered a more demanding game and wanted to play it, it was perfectly acceptable to turn down options or ever decrease resolution to accomplish that. And the vast majority of gamers were willing (and generally happy) to do so in order to enjoy the game. Now it seems that if there's a single graphic option that cannot be run at maximum ultra settings, people are disappointed and will likely avoid the game altogether, Eye candy is nice, but if that is a game's only redeeming factor then I probably wouldn't enjoy it anyway. Of course, I grew up having loads of fun playing *text games* like Zork.

Binary math, likely to calculate bit twiddling needed to control some cpu registers or similar. Funny how the old simple machines required people to understand how they work more than modern gear, which does everything for you.

Sadly, this is pretty close to how things were... Most people didn't think twice about tossing trash everywhere. And there were very few industrial pollution laws on the books - factories just dumped waste into rivers and streams. I remember all the anti-litter campaigns of the early 70's - the Crying Indian, Pitch-In etc. Also about the time that bottle redemption laws starting going into effect.
