Travel isn’t as glam as it used to be

I just went on a tour of Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands and a couple of days in London. I flew business class, five star hotels and a nice tour of the Highlands. Every castle that we went to had a bunch of people, too many people. The tours you walked like a bunch of cows listening to a tour guide that it seemed was talking more about football (soccer, for Americans) instead of imparting any knowledge of the sites. I’m glad I got to see Scotland it was always a dream, I love castles, I took a bunch of pictures and I got to feed Highland cows. But to tell you the truth, I could not wait to get home! I missed my puppy, I missed my daughter, and I missed my bed. I had signed up for a road scholar tour of Western Canada and just canceled it. I’m going to fly to Las Cruces, New Mexico to see my other daughter and that’s my big trip this year. It’s just not as fun as it used to be.

If you were going out in your 20s in the 80s/90s, what was clubbing or bar culture actually like compared to today?

I moved to San Diego in 1981 at 20 years old and lived in Pacific Beach right next to the ocean. We would follow the happy hour specials around town. Monday was Tio Leo’s which had a full on dinner of free tacos and quesadillas during happy hour. Wednesday we would go to Diegoā€˜s for dancing and their $1.00 margaritas. You couldn’t have more than four or your hand didn’t work anymore to grab the drink. Thursday was Moose McGillicuddyā€˜s for Long Island iced teas. Friday was the Roxy in El Cajon where there was great dancing and then we go to Bob’s Big Boy after at 2 o’clock in the morning for a nice big burger. Saturday night more dancing after a day at the beach. Getting in at 3 o’clock in the morning on a week night and then getting up at 7:00 am to go to work hung over as shit. I don’t know how I did it all those years.

Do you still like Madonna, even after all these years?

Fort Bliss is a premier Army installation for Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (CUAS) training and development, frequently conducting first-of-its-kind exercises to enhance drone detection, tracking, and neutralization capabilities. The 1st Armored Division and 5th Armored Brigade lead these initiatives, utilizing advanced, mobile technology to combat evolving, low-slow-small drone threats.

That’s why when I just recently moved from California to Oregon, I got rid of absolutely everything in the garage. It was already costing me almost $10k to move what I had. The man left with a trailer of stuff that was nearly flattening his trailer tires! It felt so good.

Just try to look at the joy of things. don’t go overboard, don’t spend a bunch of money, don’t invite people over that you don’t want in your home. Christmas can bring joy. I just bought a 2-foot tree and put it in my room and look at it and play some Christmas music. I love to drive around and look at the houses with the lights on . I’m just having two people over for Thanksgiving. I’m making a small turkey breast as I love the leftover turkey sandwiches. Fourth of July can be fun if you can watch the fireworks from your house and I agree about New Year’s Eve that’s just for somebody who wants to get drunk for $400. Life’s too short to not have fun, coming from someone who’s looking at the tail end of it.

My Mom said ā€œWe are a bunch of ā€˜fertile Myrtle’sā€. So I put together that if I had sex, I’d get pregnant pretty quickly. I was about 10 when I realized my brother (the first born) was born 7 months after my mom and dad’s wedding anniversary… mmmmm. This was in 1938! Fertile Myrtle indeed.

I flew business class to Italy last year for the first time at 63 and I’m never flying economy internationally again. I’ll save and wait until I have enough. Just returned from a Scotland/London trip and the lounge, no lines, great food, own space, tv, headphones, storage, amenities bag and sleeping in a bed makes me actually enjoy the plane ride now vs dreading the flight to a destination.

I ended up divorcing my husband. I said if I wanted a roommate, I might as well get a roommate. He didn’t want to fool around. He didn’t want to travel. I was going everywhere by myself. I went to college, got a better job and made twice as much amount of money than him and then he said he wanted to stay home. I said no way and got a divorce and I am the happiest I’ve ever been. I just moved from a place I lived for 45 years to a whole new state. I went to Whole Foods one day And met the cashier who had just moved here too and said do you want to get coffee and now I have a great friend. Start over. I’m 63. You’re still young.

It’s ok. Everything will work out. It’s just tough right now. Time changes all things. You are alive. You have the internet, a phone or computer, you can read and write, hopefully you had a nice meal today and have a bed to sleep in. If you believe in a higher power, talk to them and your friends and family. Try to stay a little positive. Look for the gratefulness..

I always give any workers in my home refreshments; coffee, food, water and at the end of the day some beers for the anyone who wants them! Pizza for the kitchen remodelers, lunch for my cleaning lady and her favorite cup of my special coffee upon arrival, beers for the floor installation guys. I enjoy seeing their smiles and chatting with them!
