Do you still like Madonna, even after all these years?

I’m a Gen Z and I love her old work
The reason I want to ask is because a lot of people are judging her because of how she is now
punkmonk13@reddit
Nah, I’ve never found her attractive. Her voice is weak and not that pleasant to listen to. I couldn’t put together a decent playlist of her songs that would work as a soundtrack for anything. I’ll give her this—Vogue is good to vibe to, but that’s about it. She really had one strong concept and rode that. She’s camp and gay, and she was a significant force in raising awareness of AIDS. But after that, once that era passed, she hasn’t done much that stands out to me. I can see why the LGBTQI community love her, but it’s not for me. These days she just feels like a nuisance—constantly popping up in my feed. I report it, block the posts, and it still doesn’t stop.
GiantMags@reddit
So so she was really good by just pop music. Ironically I got my dad a framed pic of her playing cards at a table half naked and it hung in my parents bedroom for like 25 years. It may have been the greatest gift I ever gave anyone
walter_grimsley@reddit
Always enjoyed most of her music. Part of the soundtrack of childhood. Have several of her albums on CD and one or two on vinyl. She was the real deal, came up the old fashioned way back when NYC was not for the the weak.
But…the surgery. If anyone was to blaze a trail for women to be themselves and reject trends, etc, it should have been her. Why didn’t Madonna age gracefully, avoid surgery, embrace the grey, and inspire women to “express themselves”? Instead she wants to look 26 forever.
Dazzling_Garden3268@reddit
👍💯
Electric-Sheepskin@reddit
Well if you think about it, she was a trailblazer in that respect, too. She was one of the first to do drastic things to her face, and now it seems like everyone who can afford it is doing the same. Love it or hate it, it's the trend.
diajean112@reddit
Nah
One-Matter7464@reddit
Nope, after she ripped off the bodice of the 17 year old woman she invited up on stage during a concert in Australia and Madonna didn't suffer and consequence. If a guy had done something equivalent to another guy, he'd be destroyed.
Madonna committed sexual assault. Her previous attack is no excuse for her behavior, if anything she should be MORE aware.
She's a disgusting hypocrite.
autistocratica@reddit
I also don't condone these things she did (like I'm no Drake fan but that was uncomfortable), but there are plenty of men who did things on stage, televised to millions and nothing happened to them.
Justin Timberlake exposed Janet Jackson's nipple and HER career suffered.
One-Matter7464@reddit
Men also do horrible things, agreed. Justin Timberlake exposed a pastie on her nipple...and they were both in on the plan if I recall correctly but yes, Janet did suffer the worst of the fall out.
I think they were trying to recreate the energy from when Mick Jagger and Tina Turner did a duet on a music award program and he ripped off her skirt, and they were clearly both in on it.
Also a case of different audiences. Music award show was on at night and young children weren't expected to be watching so it was okay. Super Bowl, young children were watching
Electric-Sheepskin@reddit
I love her. She was an icon and a beacon in the 80s for women who wanted to do their own thing. She gave us all permission to do that at a time when car salesman were still asking us who was going to cosign for us while they were staring at our tits and calling us little lady.
All this stuff that people are saying about her now, they've been saying the same for 40 years. She doesn't give a shit. Madonna is just going to keep doing what Madonna wants, and that's why I love her. So what if she's a little weird. She's Madonna. And she's 70 years old, so God bless her and Godspeed to keep doing her thing as long as she wants and is able.
a1welding2004@reddit
I liked her back in the 80's, but now, I feel like she is pure trash. Between her phony British accent, violent political rhetoric, smug attitude, and gross antics, she is a straight up clown in my eyes. She tries to do "shocking" things, like dating a woman in her 20's, randomly making out with people and doing other weird shit just to stay relevant. She needs to retire.
Electric-Sheepskin@reddit
She's always been the same. People were saying that same stuff about her in the 80s. She's just doing her Madonna thing.
December_Warlock@reddit
Violent rhetoric?
Intelligent_Salad_70@reddit
Agree
robbadobba@reddit
Her music from debut through “Music” is pretty uniformly great. Then, 25 years of mediocrity and bad surgery/dentistry.

Top-Caregiver-6266@reddit
I liked her in the 80s and I was the perfect age to be a fan. Now, decades older, I still like the songs I have always liked but I’m puzzled by someone still wanting to live in that look-at-me that mindset. You don’t have to get “old” but there’s so much to do and experience besides that. 🤷🏻♀️
RobDGenX@reddit
Missed the 70s by three days. Never liked Madonna, but couldn't go anywhere without hearing her. I was too young to find her hot, so I just found her cringe... before cringe existed.
Honeybee71@reddit
Madonna, Prince, and Michael were all my favorites when I was 12
DawnGW@reddit
same!
Accurate-Fig-3595@reddit
She came onstage 2 hours late during the 2006 Confessions tour. That was highly obnoxious. Then tickets for her latest tour began at $400, for shitty seats. I feel like she is just disrespectful to her fans. Springsteen is on tour and he came on 1/2 hour EARLY! These people have fans who need to get up and go to work the next day. Be on time. Don't be a dick. It's not like Madonna even sings--you're there for the show.
Now, Cher? She puts on an amazing show and loves her fans. Same with Dolly. Madge can get over herself.
DawnGW@reddit
yeah, you have a good point. I saw Madonna a few years before that... it was the best concert I've been to. But agreed, it's all about the show. I think that is horrible that she was 2 hours late to your show, yes that is obnoxious.
I haven't seen Cher, and would love to! I also saw Dolly and she was so natural onstage and so kind to everyone.

Same.
Unfair-Ad2664@reddit
Madonna had some real talent in the 80's. She was cranking out a lot of hits, and was, by design, controversial to an extent, but back then I really admired her business savvy. It was very obvious she was reasonably intelligent.
The past 10 - 15 years or so, she has become a complete embarrassment. Her desire to try and remain relevant, IMO, has ruined her legacy. Maybe she wasn't as smart as I thought she was, or her vanity is just beyond measure.
Carrollz@reddit
I liked (and still do) Borderline, Into the Groove, Like a Virgin, Live to Tell, La Isla Bonita, and Like a Prayer. I never owned any Madonna music and the only person I knew back then that did also owned Bette Midler albums. With the exception of Live to Tell I really haven't heard much of any of Madonna post True Blue. I really hate the title song off that album in particular because one of my all time favorite MTV experiences was the year they started a make your own video contest and it was absolutely amazing but then the next year they decided instead of original music to have it be make your own video to True Blue, so not only did I not get to hear all that original music not at all based on what music producers want us to listen to but I was also subjected to hearing True Blue over and over and over again... even when they weren't playing the videos they were constantly having promos for it on MTV.
FlowerofMountains@reddit
I'm sad that she felt pressure to keep up with BBL trend. She always stood apart from the crowd.

I still love her music and thought she sounded phenomenal at coachella. But I don’t like the person she now is.
Sudden-Damage-5840@reddit
Hell YEAH. Her music was soundtrack to my early teen years through undergrad and to living as an adult. She is the QUEEN. A whole lot of female artists wouldn’t be as strong without Madonna paving the way.
They kept trying to put her in boxes. She would rip it up and reinvent herself. I’m learned to never allow yourself to be put into a box by her. She was before her time. Got lots of grief. She is MADONNA
jediHoo@reddit
I liked her early music when I was a middle schooler. I saw her in concert as an adult and it was a horrible show so I’ve been turned off from her ever since. I respect that she’s still going at 67, but I wish she hadn’t gone so far with the plastic surgery on her face.
miggismallz33@reddit
I love her music. 80’s, 90’s, 00’s like Hung Up. However, she just seems desperate to hang on. Years ago it was with Britney, then a song with Justin T. Then Nikki Minaj and now Sabrina Carpenter. Just lame.
Her body, her choice to have plastic surgery and mess up her face.
I will always listen to her music. I will never go to another concert. (Twice, each time started over 2 hours late).
GarionOrb@reddit
To be fair, the Britney song was on Britney's album and Madonna didn't plan it. They met backstage after an awards show and M agreed to sing on the already-finished track.

Was never into pop music. But I know those artists come and go so quickly. For people to still be talking about her after all these years shows she must be one of the best ever.
Ok-meow@reddit
She will forever be my Queen.
shackspirit@reddit
In my opinion, she had some absolute bangers (Holiday, Burning Up, Crazy For You) and some crap (Material Girl) and some that trod the line between them (Like A Virgin). She made great pop, and was prefect for the time. Pity what’s she’s done to her face. She was very cute once.
mhmbopbeavis@reddit
Her character was hilarious in that "totally true" story of weird al movie lol
Anachronism--@reddit
Always liked a lot of her music and still do. As a person at best she seems like a difficult pain in the ass…
ksewell68@reddit
She always seemed like such an immature asshole. But I liked her 80s stuff.
cgund@reddit
I was never a massive fan but Ray of Light came on in the supermarket last night and that is one hell of a banger.
Fair-Wishbone-1190@reddit
Not as much as I did. But I like her 80s songs still, but not much of her personality anymore.
grimmless@reddit
As a person? Not really. As an artist? Absolutely.
BillsBells65@reddit
Was never a fan.
autistic_insomniac5@reddit
Her songs were the soundtrack of the 80s whether you were into her music or not and I can still appreciate her talent as a singer. However, she seems like she was always an atrocious person to be around.
coleraineyid@reddit
Nope. She’s an industry plant and gatekeeper that all young female artists are supposed to pay homage to. She was born in the same year as Prince and Michael Jackson. She shouldn’t be allowed to valet park their cars. A detestable individual with zero talent who rips off any trends.
ancientastronaut2@reddit
Never was into her very much.
Moist-Pea-8034@reddit
Only liked her when I was a kid and didn’t know there was better music out there
Melodic_War327@reddit
Haven't seen much out of her lately, to be honest. Pretty much fine with her behavior, though I did not think she needed all the cosmetic surgery. 67 doesn't look that bad.
Electronic_Gap3253@reddit
Always loved her, always will. She’s always been messy, it’s just her brand!
kobuta99@reddit
Has she put out recent music? I haven't heard any of she has, so no real opinion any her or any antics today.
Deserves a place in pop history for her music in her hey days, and her iconic image and style. She broke rules and boundaries, but also backed it up with a lot of great songs that are still a fantastic listen today. I didn't love everything she put out, but she has many memorable songs. Not my favorite pop artist but she is still talked about for a reason.
GarionOrb@reddit
The new song just came out, called "I Feel So Free". The new album comes out in July, and is a sequel to her 2005 Confessions on a Dance Floor album.
whats1more7@reddit
She remade Like a Prayer for the latest Deadpool movie and honestly it was really well done.
new2bay@reddit
What’s she done now?
GarionOrb@reddit
A new song was released last week ("I Feel So Free") and her new album is coming in July.
spintool1995@reddit
I wasn't into pop music in general so people like Madonna and Michael Jackson didn't do it for me. I can think of two of her songs I liked when they came out. "Open Your Heart" mainly because of the video and me being a horny teen and "Like a Prayer" which was just a really great song. It's nice that Like a Prayer has had a resurgence due to Deadpool and Wolverine.
GarionOrb@reddit
Madonna has always hated "Material Girl" also, and despised being referred to as that.
CtrlAltComment@reddit
Never cared for her or her music. Especially Papa, dont preach. That damn song came out when I was pregnant with my 1st born.
LevelPerception4@reddit
I hated that song and video. Madonna was pretty long in the tooth to be worrying about an unplanned pregnancy, and as a young feminist, it seemed like a pro-life anthem. I hated True Blue even more because MTV did that promo for fans to shoot a video for it, meaning it was in constant rotation. But I got truly sick of her when she published Sex. The only things I remember about her from this century are her making out with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera and adopting a bunch of kids right after Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt made news for international adoptions.
I still like her earlier songs like Borderline and Lucky Star, but the last song of hers I liked was Live to Tell.
CtrlAltComment@reddit
It also got pinned on anyone young and pregnant. I was married and everyone still sang it around me and laughed.
I agree. She let everything go to her head. The sexualization and bringing religion into her music killed it for me.
Purple_Current1089@reddit
62f and adored 80s Madonna. Now all I can think about is how she forcibly kissed Britney Spears and Drake (well maybe he deserved it)!
ForgottenGenX47@reddit
Thr Britney kiss was planned, she didn't force it on her. She also kissed Christina Aguilera, but only Britney got the attention.
Purple_Current1089@reddit
Good to know, but I still thought it was 🤮!
SamDublin@reddit

largos7289@reddit
I mean if we're talking strictly her 80's work, she was like one of the most influential artists of the time. She was the Britney Spears of our day thou. Cindy was the better artist, Madone just capitalized on her own shenanigans.
ShivRoy13@reddit
I liked her 80-90s music. Didn’t like her much as a person back then. Don’t like her latest music. I really don’t like her as a person today. Still like her 80-90s music.
hyperbole_is_great@reddit
I think Madonna won the battle but Cindy Lauper won the war. Madonna dominated the 80s-90s but we are far more likely to hear a Cindy song on the radio today. I hardly ever hear Madonna on the radio now.

Modern Madonna is a part of what we agreed to when we all subscribed to Madonna back in 1983. It was hidden in the license agreement but you should not be surprised. Did y’all really think she was gonna just stop being Madonna and buy a golf cart and some muu muus and move to Shady Pines? You can just ignore her current iteration and go pull up Holiday on your phone. I’m not stopping you.

I hung out a lot with the punk/alternative crowd. So I kept to myself the fact that I secretly enoyed Madonna & metal hair bands.
Wind_Responsible@reddit
We were Seattle grunge but somehow she snuck in. We might not have had albums but…. Madonna is one of those things you just could t avoid. If you don’t like the song you liked something about the 4 minute movies she made lol. Hot dudes and chicks. Madonna always made something you had to look at or listen to at least once. I’m shocked that I grew up listening to grunge and never owned a Madonna album, never put one of her songs on a mix tape but…. Well know them. lol. Madonna was unavoidable for over 20 yrs she is so successful at her music and movies.
sahlins@reddit
I'm Gen X, and I grew up with her music. I've never loved her stuff, but I still respect her as one of the all time greats.
ep3dmik@reddit
Musically, some of her albums are mixed perfectly. A lot of Michael Jackson's music is just as good. Sure the music is dated, but you'll notice old songs changing genre as well as artists changing their take on it and re-releasing it.
Literally, nothing new under the sun lol
Wind_Responsible@reddit
If you listen to her live she’s updated all these songs to some extent. It’s a trip
bernardfarquart@reddit

2ndChanceAtLife@reddit
Just 80’s music. She always had to push the envelope and seems to be completely oblivious to the fact she is getting old. She should step back and maybe mentor upcoming talent. Not French kiss them on camera.

Artistic_Chapter_355@reddit
I feel sad about how she is now and it impacts my enjoyment of her old music. She was always so sharp and self possessed; I never expected her to act desperate or be out of it on substances. I think I read she had surgery and/or pain and started using painkillers, like so many folks do. I think it’s hard and scary to see her vulnerable.
Capital_Pea@reddit
agreed, i wish we could enjoy her as she “was” and she’d just quietly retire.
Artistic_Chapter_355@reddit
I don’t even want her to retire, just care for health and try to evolve as an artist. Hard to watch her struggle.
MissDisplaced@reddit
Not a huge fan; but she ok.
Really liked some of her old stuff: Lucky Star, Get Into the Groove. It’s cute and was fresh at the time.
Got to hand it to her for hanging in there, but I worry about her constant plastic surgery. She should just accept aging and let it be what it is.
RiverWhole4388@reddit
Before she started that plastic surgery shit, she was aging like a boss. Looked frigging amazing.
MissDisplaced@reddit
I know! She was in amazing shape and looked super fit.
The plastic surgery, I swear. I can see getting a little bit, here and there, but these celebs all seem to get WAY excessive with it and ruin their good looks.

I don't like her I ADORE her. I think she's brilliant. Every focuses on her open sexuality. That's just so surface level. She writes her songs, created her own career and never let anyone tell her no. Her songs are brilliant. Listen to Live to Tell, Gone, Frozen, Like a Prayer and so many more. She's truly original and speaks her mind. I love her. I may not love every album but I sure do appreciate that she tries new things. She is a tough woman who isn't afraid to do what she wants. She taught me that woman can be sexual, smart and strong. I love how in charge she is and I think it's bull that people just focus on her age and and her looks and yada yada. She is a great artist

When it first came out I played the Like A Virgin cassette to death (in rotation w/ Prince & the Revolution’s album Purple Rain & Cindy Lauper’ She’s So Unusual album).

Beneficial-Age-4059@reddit
Gen X…I wish she could have just let herself age gracefully. Getting that muppet face plastic surgery and prancing around half nude onstage now is creepy and degrading. I respect her long successful career but she just comes off now as pitiful.
dannyvegas@reddit
Yeah. With her talent, style and status as such a cultural icon, I assumed she would have taken the ‘old Hollywood’ route of refined glamours elegance in her later years. She seems to be going another direction entirely.
LuckyAd2714@reddit
Yep
FiddleStrum@reddit
Yes, of course. She was a trailblazer that very few artists since can compare.
It’s sad that even seemingly strong women like her feel they need to have plastic surgery but society demands women don’t age, especially in image-based industries like entertainment.
Southernms@reddit
Borderline was then, now, and will always be in my top 10 favorite songs.
GrowThangs@reddit
I loved her. I still love so many of her songs.. Material Girl, Like a Virgin, Vogue (and there is a live performance of Vogue that I periodically watch that still just takes my breath away), Like a Prayer, La Isla Bonita, Who's that Girl, Crazy for you, Holiday, Cherish... I don't know anything recent.
Besides the music, she was just so strong and irreverent. As I child, I thought she was the coolest. And she was so beautiful. I bet she would have been a beautiful older woman as well if she had left out all of the plastic surgery that makes her look weird. I don't like what she's done to her face, but it's also none of my business. She sure didn't ask for my opinion.
I saw photos from Coachella and people were complaining about her outfit choice, but I think she looked great in it. Maybe I should seek out some of her music that I don't know and see if I like it.

I would say she was an influencer of her era. She knew how to promote herself based and was in the right place right time. Her earlier pop music was a lot of fun and she did influence fashion at that time. A better artist of that era is Cindy Lauper.

Didn't realize how much I still liked her until I watched Deadpool and Wolverine.
Hey_Laaady@reddit
No, I never liked her. I thought she was a talented PR person and dancer though.
dirtygreysocks@reddit
Her early stuff had the underground dance club/street flair I appreciated, but was not a huge fan of. But she made huge strides for women in music, and sexuality, and was brazenly talking about AIDS and safe sex and supporting the gay community in an era where our president wouldn't acknowledge AIDS existed. So I will always love her for that. People clowning on her age when old farts like Robert Plant keep getting trotted out is absurd to me.
Fun-Room-6501@reddit

I loved her growing up. Saw her in concert 3 times and loved all of them. I haven’t really listened to any of her music since Confessions, but I don’t listen to the radio anymore, so I didn’t know she is still releasing music. She is an icon.
smile_saurus@reddit
I loved her when I was a kid & teen, when she was at her peak popularity-wise. Now if one of her songs comes on I don't mind but I don't seek them out.
I always remember my mom saying Madonna is as old as me! and my mom is currently 70 and I recently saw an article or something with Madonna's age listed as 62 or something. So that's weird.

I saw her one time in my life...ONE time...and I payed an arm and a leg to get good seats too and she came out hours late. It was super annoying and I am big fan too.

PinkyLeopard2922@reddit
Loved her in the 80's era, Borderline, Lucky Star, black jelly bracelets, messy eyebrows, red lipstick, the teased bob with a handkerchief. Then she was everywhere and with the oversaturation I kind of lost interest. I respect that she is still always re-inventing herself though.
BmanGorilla@reddit

Educational_Tap_4704@reddit
I've always loved Madonna. I don't care if she's 67 or 107. That said, her last tour was a major disappointment! We went expecting the Madonna we knew from the 80's and 90's. Instead we were entertained by her playing her old top hits on acoustical guitar, or by her daughter on a grand piano. Now I'm not saying it was not expertly orchestrated and very well done. I'm saying I'm still SOOO disappointed. We spent $2,000 per ticket to see her do nothing all night but play a guitar while wearing a bad fitting bathing suit.
BT_Artist@reddit
I was just talking to friends about this topic the other day - about how, in the initial stages of her career, she seemed kind of fake and manufactured.
At least till the Mouseketeers came along and steamrolled pop culture with their plastic bullshit. Now Madonna seems like the real deal in comparison with those idiots.
daisy0808@reddit
She developed her style from the dance clubs of NYC, and was always into street fashion. By Like a Virgin, her popularity flipped the script on female sexuality. She owned it, and my mother was horrified. :) Vogue cemented her as a gay icon because she celebrated her own sexuality, instead of of the machine exploiting her for it.
Nervous-Rooster7760@reddit
I like stuff from Ray of Light and before. After that lost interest in her music.
Who she is today I don’t really think about but I find it interesting all the folks in SM saying she is too old. She is 67. You don’t hear same noise about male singers still performing in 70s? I don’t have to agree with her to appreciate the I don’t give a fuck what you think vibe she has.
dirtybo0ts@reddit

I wouldn’t change the station or channel if several of her songs came on, but I also never spent money on her music or concerts. So I guess I still like her 80s/90s music the same as I always have. I’ll still listen to some and still won’t pay money for any of it.
mediweevil@reddit
I stopped listening to anything she produced after The Immaculate Collection was released in 1990. her old stuff is gold, anything after that is just noise.

My first cassette was Like a Virgin and I was a massive fan for years. Loved her movies too, Desperately Seeking Susan is still a fav. I was a fan OF Madonna, not Madonna's music per sé. When I was a tween girl, Madonna was everything a little girl wanted to be. Strong, independent, quick, cool, and gorgeous. It's as if I knew exactly how I wanted to head into my teen years through her influence.
Madonna's music sort of came with the package when she first struck it big, so of course I did like "Like a Virgin", and through the discovery, enjoyed her debut album "Madonna". By default, I did purchase and (sort of) liked "True Blue", but I noticed a marked difference in who she was by that time. She was married by then, cut her hair all off, bottled blonde, and sort of looked like a sexy version of most people's grandma with her haircut choice and the way she did her make up. She wasn't the Desperately Seeking Susan-esque character of herself anymore.
By then we were learning that Madonna's schtick was all about reinventing herself. So when "Like a Prayer" came out, I remember thinking, nope.. she's lost it on me. She became gimmicky. The film Who's That Girl didn't help, with her intensely annoying Nikki Finn cartoon character. I noticed that Madonna herself enjoyed phases, and she was responding to her love of things from the 50s that I just wasn't in to.
After that, her image, message, and music drifted further and further away from what I initially liked her for. Other musicians could retain their sense of self both in image and sound while rolling with the times, but Madonna just seemed to completely implode and recreate something unrecognizable.
Anyway, I mourn the 1980s Madonna. Who she was, and her whole attitude and style and whatever music reflected that. Beyond that, she just seemed to be a try-hard with her attempts to shock with oversexualization. (It was the 90s. No one was shocked by then.) And by then, her dance music was too lack-lustre to be great to a young fan that liked her 80s years.

She clearly gives too many fucks. She is constantly worried about being her age, destroying herself with over the top plastic surgery, and trying to pretend she is as relevant as the new pop stars. She is stuck in the past and instead of embracing change she's trying to pretend it doesn't happen. That is not the behaviour of someone who gives zero fucks.

Drunkenly bought tickets from a scalper ($300 tickets for $75) in Atlantic City one summer. She made the venue turn the A/C off so her dancers didn't get cold. It was like 115 degrees in there. It’s interesting and surprising actually. I still respect and love and listen to 80s pop as much as anyone you could imagine. More than any of my friends. For her I only still like La Isla Bonita, and that’s a very atypical song for her, it’s a genre song. But her other hits they sound surprisingly empty to me. While I still eat up PLENTY of what most ppl consider bubble gum pop from any year in the 80s. (81 wasn’t good. 80s hit their stride a couple years ago. OreoSpeedwaggon@reddit
I started not caring about anything she put out around the time that she did that godawful James Bond "Die Another Day" song, and I haven't had any interest in listening to anything she has done since her peak in the early '90s.
SpaceAdventures3D@reddit
I really like the track, but Die Another Day should have had another vocalist. "Im going to destroy my ego." That's not at all Madonna. I like the lyrics, the production and the especially like the Dirty Vegas mix. Just wish someone else sang it.

PoisonMind@reddit
I think I remember her more as a great dancer and showman than as a musician. She's not bad by any means, it's just not my favorite genre.
SkinTeeth4800@reddit
I really did not like most of Madonna's early pop. I liked "Like a Prayer", though -- It's got a good melody.
Sonic Youth, as Ciccone Youth, recorded The Whitey Album between 1986-1988. I thought they were making fun of Madonna Ciccone (and I approved & thought the music was good on the album).
However, some critics and music historians assert that No Wave uber-hepcats Sonic Youth were not 100% ironic & mocking, that they were at least partially rooting for this girl who scrabbled for artistic success in the late 1970s and early 1980s in the same NYC milieu they came up in. She was in a relationship with Jean-Michel Basquiat during part of that time.
I unequivocally like "Express Yourself". I like that period of Madonna as a culture synthesizer. The cutting edge postmodern professors at my college were super into her in the late 1980s. The academic field of "Madonna Studies" arose during that time.
The next years were mulchy for me.
But I really liked the album she did with William Orbit in 1998, Ray of Light -- it seemed like a Madonna album for people who didn't like other Madonna albums (like me).
I enjoyed the 2005 song that sampled ABBA, and was amused when Gorillaz played on a screen before one of her live performances.

I really liked the single Ray of Light including the remixes. It got me into William Orbit's music.

25 years ago I was asked who I would want to have dinner with and I said Madonna. Not because I love her as a person or adored her music. I liked her music. I think her plastic surgery has gotten entirely out of hand in the last 10-15 years.
But what made me choose her was how she kept reinventing herself. She didn’t stay the same or rest on her laurels. I admired that. Still do. It’s a lesson for us. For me, anyway.
HobieSlabwater@reddit
This is a really good point.❤️

Yes. Yes I do. She's made her (rather large) mistakes but has more than earned her legend status. And her ballads are criminally underrated.

I was never a fan. She’s mid at best.
monkey_monkey_monkey@reddit
I like a couple of her OG songs, they bring me back to a great time in my life but I was never a huge fan. La Isla Bonita will always make me stop and smile
These days, I find her a little cringy. She's gone way overboard on the plastic surgery and seems to be trying way to hard to be cool/relevant.

Never liked Madonna. I think I was the only one in the world that thought she was over played, over hyped, and over sexed. She got monotonous very quickly.
After her sexually assaulting Brittany Spears on stage, then sexually assaulting a 17 year fan (in Australia, I think) she is non grata.
Her phase where she looked like Marilyn Manson prompted me to block her on my playlist.
Unfortunately she still sneaks through on social media.
Genn8130@reddit
Her music? Of course! I don't know enough about 'how she is now' to say anything about that, but I do still love her music, yes.
Different-Bag-8217@reddit
Never really liked her in the first place. I just didn’t see it? Sure she was groundbreaking and all that. Definitely beautiful in the 80-90’s. I just was in a ska alternative music faze back then. I think it was the first chilli pepper album that change me from mainstream music.
Bucks2174@reddit
What made you think I liked her back then?
DominusGenX@reddit
Always loved her...everything past Ray of Light (her last great album) I haven't been much been a fan of, she still creates club/disco tracks which she has a loyal fan base and still relevant for the LGBTQ fans old a new.

NeiClaw@reddit
As a Gen X gay, yes absolutely. I’ve seen her dozens of times in concert and a he has arguably the best singles discography in pop music given how long she’s been around. That said, I think decades of celebrity caught up to her so the last decade or so has been kind of strange. That kind of intense 80s fame killed off most of her contemporaries (Michael, Prince, Whitney, George). So even if she’s a been a bit wacky in recent years I’m glad she’s still around and making music. Looking forward to to her new album.
anillop@reddit
As a fellow Gen X, I can’t believe you actually left “Weird Al” Yankovic off of that list. That man is a treasure and deserves the recognition for his long career that he has earned.
Top-Scarcity5937@reddit
To me it was just pop radio music until Peter Rauhofer, Junior Vasquez, Victor Calderone, etc. put their magic on it.
furniguru@reddit
I wasn’t much of a Madonna fan in the 80s, but I’ve come to respect how huge of an impact she made socially at that time. Almost every girl in my high school dressed like her. Her music was everywhere. And her influence was immense.

Yeah I remember hearing Material Girl at the damn roller skating rink in 1985 and could not get that song out of my head. And here we are 41 years later. Lol

Familiar-Pianist-682@reddit
Madonna, to me, is an icon. Most likely because I love/ed to dance as a teen, and most of her early music is great for that. Now, as an adult, I can see (hear😉) that she’s not a technically gifted singer (please-no one come after me-I knew little about singing as a teen, and not much more at 57). But what a career she has made for herself. Sadly, no one seems to want her to keep being her former persona at her age. I say she should do whatever she wants. Glad to see younger people listening to her early work.👏🏻👏🏻🫶🏻

Beautiful_Diver4180@reddit
I don’t like her. She was all the rage in the 80s during my HS years. I would turn the channel if one of her songs came on now. Perhaps oversaturated? Perhaps the lack of a band with great guitar or drums etc made her music not last the test of time I don’t know
StOnEy333@reddit

ConcertinaTerpsichor@reddit
I thought she was brilliant in the 80s and I WAS REALLY LOOKING FORWARD to her songs evolving and changing as she went through parenthood and aging and the death of her parents, etc. I thought she’d have some really interesting and provocative takes on what it means to be a slightly older woman still living in a man’s world.
Guess I feel disappointed.
Kitchen-Homework-816@reddit
The last time I liked Modonna was 1991 which was the En Vougue album. She just became a completely different artist and got kinda weird.
GarionOrb@reddit
"Vogue" came out in 1990. There was no album called EnVogue (that was a 90s girl group). The album with "Vogue" is called I'm Breathless.
Kitchen-Homework-816@reddit
Whatever. I was at grad night Disney land in 1991 when the Madonna movie came out. That's the last time I felt any love for Madonna. Also En Vougue actually performed that year at Disneyland for Grad night so maybe I connected the two. Since you are so into actual specifics you can look it up.
I think most people understood and since I haven't bothered to care about Madonna in over 30 yrs it makes sense that I didn't get the details correct. This post is about whether or not I like Madonna so I guess it's clear where I fall on the subject lol.
Aggressive_Power_471@reddit
80s Madonna was my favorite. La Isla Bonita has always been my favorite song but I also love her Debut album. True Blue as well. Yeah Like a Prayer was pretty good but the rest of the 90s was not really as good so I say 80s.
dakotarework@reddit
Musically her last significant album in my opinion was Confessions on a Dancefloor in 2005. It’s been downhill since.
Personally, she’s always had an abrasive and grating personality. So while I liked the music and respect her impact on the industry and culture, I e never cared for her as a person. Her antics now just confirm it all.
IcedBlueberryLemon@reddit
Never liked her as a personality and found her voice to be mediocre, but respected the marketing. That said, I was a club DJ and "Express Yourself" was a guaranteed floor filler! I'll always love that song.

I still love her peak era, but now she needs to age more gracefully. All that filler in her face just looks horrible. It’s ok to wear more clothes when you reach a certain age too.
Expert_Habit9520@reddit
I like some of the “lesser” ‘80s and early ‘90s hits like “Angel”, “Rescue Me”, and “Deeper and Deeper”.
Some of the really big ones such as “Like A Virgin”, “Into The Groove”, “Vogue”, “Like A Prayer”, I think they’ve been so overplayed that while I respect them I won’t go out of my way to listen to them.
I do still like “Justify My Love” and “This Used To Be My Playground” when I hear them.

Green_Ad_276@reddit
I have been a fan of hers most of my life. However, after confessions (20 years ago), it seems like she’s out of touch with her fans. It appears she doesn’t care about us anymore.
Granted she got very ill working her ass off to get in shape for her last tour, but it seems like she is more about stroking her own ego than entertaining us. She shows up late to shows, she does weird things on social, she misattributes illnesses to people (Luther Vandross)…it’s like she doesn’t care about anyone but herself, let alone those of us who have loved her for so long.
I appreciate everything she has done for the LGTBIA community. She was and still is a fierce advocate. But I wish she would remember how much we pay to see her and how valuable everyone’s time is.
Time is as much of a non-renewable resource for her as it is for us.

I love earliest Madonna most. Her breakthrough up through Desperately Seeking Susan movie. Her sound, look, and moves are super evocative of the early/mid 80s to me. I do like diff aspects of her later years after that, but nothing sounds like her early stuff to me, and that resonates the most.
