"There's this cool new Black Eyed Peas song I think you'd love..." Serious reply? Tell him you need the bathroom. Hopefully he'll be gone when you get back. Can't do that every time so maybe sometimes you could set a 2 minute timer on your phone when he walks over to you (tell him it's important and you've gotta deal with it idk). Fake being sick? People hate germs.

Are reduced sections not that cheap anymore?

Posted by KneeSnapz@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 115 comments

ItsFreeRight@reddit

I went to my local tonight for the first time in weeks. This was at 8pm. All the reductions they had left (bakery and chilled) weren't even reduced by 50%. How they think people want expiring food that close to closing time for such a lackluster discount, I've no idea. Before anyone comes at me and says they don't have to reduce anything, their 'warm' food reductions (eg wedges, chicken wings etc) are literal garbage. The food is cold and hard as a rock and Morrisons still have the nerve to charge 60% of the original price. If they want to give the food away to charity or bin it, so be it but don't insult customers with leftover, expired crap at terrible prices. I can't say Morrisons are any more expensive than Tesco for full priced products (although I will say they NEVER have any decent offers on confectionary) but the quality isn't worth the prices anymore. The fact the reductions are so poor is proof that they're scrimping wherever they can and it won't be long before it all goes pear shaped.

God forbid anyone has an actual emergency like your poor husband did. I keep seeing comments saying "there are people who are worse off and literally dying" and to them I say I'm sorry but if your husband's accident wasn't an emergency, then what the heck is? I think of that quote from The Simpsons and how it applies here: "Do I have to be dead before you'll help me?" "Well not dead, dying" It's honestly pathetic that what sounds like a pretty severe injury took 12 hours to be treated. I'm not blaming the workers as they're just following orders but the system is clearly broken.

In a morbid way, it's funny to think that there are more people living longer when life at the moment isn't really worth living. I won't pretend to understand what taxes really go towards apart from healthcare, police and education but given how all 3 seem to be in a sorry state, it makes you wonder how the money is being used.

But old people have always existed so what's changed? I suppose the 'heating or eating' issue wasn't a factor back in the day so probably less elderly people struggling in that sense but is it all down to money? If the country wasn't in the state it is and people could afford to live properly and hospitals had the resources and staff they needed, would everything be back to how it was? People will always get sick but I genuinely don't understand where it all went so wrong.

How did the NHS get as bad as it is? I understand there's a lack of funding but based on the hours-long wait times which seem to have been normalised, it's like everybody is having an emergency all day every day. I swear the nation didn't used to be needing A+E as much as it is now.

£20 is £15 more than I'd spend on a stranger/co-worker. I don't do SS because I'd be worried someone would get me something nice and I'd give something cheap but on the flip side, I'd be annoyed if I got something decent for someone and received something naff. Chocolate and marshmallows are tasty whatever the occasion. I don't love wearing socks but I'm in the minority. The hand care set is a nice stocking filler so I don't think you did too bad at all. It's hard shopping for people you actually know and like, never mind people you've just recently gotten to know. You actually got the best present of everyone though: the knowledge that your co-workers are awful. Keep to yourself and do your job well and you'll be just fine :)

Someone explain to me like I'm 5. Why has the price of everything become so ridiculous? Even to those who say they can comfortably afford everything they want, surely you see prices have gone up? I know about chocolate prices increasing because of the poor cocoa harvests (although I'd heard nothing about this in the news. It was Reddit I learned it from) but what about everything else? People are commenting meat and juice have gone up significantly. Does it have something to do with overpopulation (supply vs demand) or is that way off the mark? We all moan about the price of things going up by 10 or 20p but the supermarkets have been doing that for over a year now and I'd love to know why. Surely there can't be shortages of everything. Even a large Mcdonalds meal with one of their ltd ed burgers now cost £11 where it used to be between £7-£8 a few years ago. Is the goal to have us all living off beans on toast?

What’s the one show/series/movie that you’ve still not watched regardless of the hype around it ?

All of them. Stranger Things, Squid Games, Game Of Thrones, Bridgerton etc. I can't think of anymore off the top of my head because I could not care less about the latest trend. I can't stand when everyone tells me "you should watch this" or "it's this new series on Netflix". Thanks for the advice but IDGAF. The only popular series I ever watched were The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina as I loved the 90s version and 13 Reasons Why because I actually wanted to see what all the hype was about and did get into it. These days though, I'm not interested in what's trending and what everyone is talking about. Nobody wants to talk about the music or shows I like so why should I care about their hobbies?

Same. It's just blankets and soup according to most people. That doesn't stop it getting dark and wet. If it were dark but everything was lit up with a warm glow like the Americans have for Halloween AND it was dry, I'd be happy that it's cooler but we don't get that here; all we get is miserable weather which puts us in a miserable headspace.

Fully agree with the getting up in the morning. I don't often do mornings for work but when I have to in Winter, it takes me back to waking up for school, freezing and wanting to stay under the blanket. It's awful. God knows how the poor homeless cope

I'm with OP. We barely got a Summer as it was although it's been like this since covid. Yes we had heat waves but the damn clouds blocked out all the sun and made it muggy the whole time. While I agree this isn't fun, at least there's a better chance at getting some sun and you've got the longer nights. We're one day into September and by 8pm, it was already dark. It's rained off and on the last few days and it's only going to stay that way. I do like the colours associated with Autumn but people romanticise it too much. Why are you so desparate to stay in your house? I get the rain and cold weather are unavoidable but are you all really sitting around wearing sweaters, eating soup and watching films? Don't you work and have to deal with the nights drawing in as you get home? I also hate Winter. We don't get snow; we just get awfully freezing weather where again, you can't do much and it gets dark by 4pm so you're forced to stay inside. I'm not exactly Mr Sociable or Mr Walks Everywhere but I hate feeling trapped at home because it's dark, wet and cold outside.

I do sometimes bring my own ingredients from home and my colleagues looked at me when I got my cheesegrater out but who cares? What are relatively healthy people eating on a normal day in the UK?

Posted by Neverwillieverrrr@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 513 comments

ItsFreeRight@reddit

I'm not a morning girl so breakfast isn't anything traditional for me, more a snack. I love a good sandwich at dinner time and then I'll have something quick after work as a meal as I can't be bothered to cook (lazy but also tired) which could be anything from a microwave meal to another sandwich (yes lots of carbs, aren't I healthy). If it's a day off, I will at least get something I can cook in the oven, be it pizza or chicken breast. I am bad for snacking though. I love my chocolate.

Are ‘gym bros’ actually dull, or is that just how we come across in the UK?

Posted by RumpleForeskin7717@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 109 comments

Ngl, I do think a lot of gym bros can be vain and come off as boring in the sense they make the gym their whole personality but I do that with music. At the end of the day, do you. If that's what you're interested in, don't let others put you down for it. We all have our likes and interests. If she was banging on about makeup and clothes for hours, you'd be just as bored as she would of you talking about the gym. We're all a little bit vain anyway.

Why does Morrisons not get more love?

Posted by s_dalbiac@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 645 comments

ItsFreeRight@reddit

The prices. Also the fact that the reduced bakery items are cold and hard. Half price for a flaky, deflated, sad steak slice is nowhere near appealing, not to mention burnt-looking sausages. If they want people to buy that crap, they need to do a lot better than 50% off. Lastly, there are dozens of items without a price or things will be incorrectly marked as being on offer and then you have to waste time convincing staff that said items have been marked incorrectly. I appreciate the staff are probably run off their feet with stupid and unrealistic orders from above but even though I do use Morrisons a few times a week for convenience, the above points make me want to not bother. If they can't even reduce the bakery items to a decent price to match how unappetizing they look (I mean truly hard to look at. In fact, they should be binned) and everything else is so expensive, there's really nothing there for me. Of all the supermarkets near me, Morrisons are the worst for offers. I know chocolate has gone up in price but Jesus!

Why do living standards in England seem so low compared to other European countries?

Posted by BulkyVermicelli225@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1903 comments

ItsFreeRight@reddit

I live in the UK and can't imagine why those of us who live here would be offended. The country is crap. We've got dimwits in charge (who are getting a pay rise while millions struggle with the cost of living) and shockingly poor services considering how much we're taxed. Life keeps getting worse yet somehow the prices of everything keep increasing. The NHS is a joke (no disrespect to the nurses and doctors), trains are awful and the justice system isn't fit for purpose. So many serious offenders get off on light sentences while someone whose only crime was calling someone a name, gets jailed for 2 years. I can't imagine wanting to live anywhere else as it is my home but I'm certainly not proud of the UK, least of all for having a 'royal family'.
