I do the reductions at Sainsbury's, we're supposed to do it in waves and lower the price every few hours, yet I don't give a crap and I put the deep discounts straight on. Haven't got time to mess around and want this crap gone. You get given a minimum and maximum discount price, it's down to the colleagues themselves what they price it at as long as it it within the given threshold.

It does depend on the time of day, IIRC, there should be bigger discounts towards closing, but also depends if there's actually staff available to do it, so it might get left on a higher price from earlier in the day and never gets re-priced later.

Is this policy to try and stop as I call them, the yellow sticker brigade, from knowing wha time things reduce fully? Aside from trying to get the most money ofc. Not so sure on Morrisons but at my local Tesco there’s the same women ready to pounce on the poor staff member every time at a certain time. I did at first think that they must need the food but then realised they were putting the stuff on olio later, and also heard them talking about their trip to Dubai. As others have said you have no doubt meant that people can eat when they couldn’t usually afford to, so good work.

I went to my local tonight for the first time in weeks. This was at 8pm. All the reductions they had left (bakery and chilled) weren't even reduced by 50%. How they think people want expiring food that close to closing time for such a lackluster discount, I've no idea. Before anyone comes at me and says they don't have to reduce anything, their 'warm' food reductions (eg wedges, chicken wings etc) are literal garbage. The food is cold and hard as a rock and Morrisons still have the nerve to charge 60% of the original price. If they want to give the food away to charity or bin it, so be it but don't insult customers with leftover, expired crap at terrible prices. I can't say Morrisons are any more expensive than Tesco for full priced products (although I will say they NEVER have any decent offers on confectionary) but the quality isn't worth the prices anymore. The fact the reductions are so poor is proof that they're scrimping wherever they can and it won't be long before it all goes pear shaped.

I'm happy to stand corrected but I don't think that's right. What bit of the corp tax return are you actually referring to? Corporation tax is based on profits. Stock is accounted for at cost (and I'm not aware of any option to account for it otherwise). If you donate an item you remove it from inventory at cost value which reduces profit and therefore tax. You can't turn a £1 cost into a £3 tax deduction just because retail price was £3. If that were allowed, companies could generate fake tax losses by donating high-margin goods which HMRC does not allow. That's probably part of it, but the demand is probably the other part. If I'm running the yellow sticker scheme at the head office and know that items sell out in the second discount block that's been referenced when the price goes to 50%, I'm potentially making the first discount down to 60% to try and keep as much value as possible. If it's gone before then, then the limits will be higher, while stuff that goes into the third block is possibly having stock adjustments to limit waste and potentially eliminate anything sticking around until then

I'm a code checker at my local Morrisons, of its near closing then the bay will have likely been emptied of the final reductions and loaded up with the stock for the next day. My store closes at 10pm and we do a round of finals at 5pm and another round at 7pm. Price percentages are definitely not as generous as they were years ago, even other companies are like this as I have worked in other supermarkets too. Its also dependent on how many of the same item you have, the more singles the higher the savings

I feel it's a recent thing...And I don't really care. The discount shelves were always camped and swarmed by the same yellow sticker rats who basically just threw the whole thing in their trolley before anybody else could get a look in. Highly doubt they were the ones who needed it as they were there every time I went (so weekly) and took an amount of food that would be impossible for even a large family to get through in that time. Don't seem to see them anymore since the prices aren't as good and I'm happier getting the occasional small discount than it basically being a thing that doesn't apply to me as I'm not setting up a tent and waiting. So, as with many things, probably the few who ruined it for everybody else.

Co op uses an algorithm to determine the reduced price. It takes into account the quality of the product being reduced, how well that product sells in store etc ... And the system will then set the reduction price for you. For example, if I had one ham and cheese sandwich to reduce it might knock of 10% from the price, because the data shows that will still sell by the end of the day. But if I had ten vegan onion Baji sandwiches to reduce it would be a much better reduction, maybe 75%, because there are more items to sell and it's a product no one wants.

As someone who worked in Sainsbury’s as a manager for many years until very recently: these discounts are not there to give the customer a good deal, they are to reduce waste/loss for the business. If they can reduce something by a smaller amount and have it still sell on the day, that is less wastage for the shop. Now that Sainsbury’s gives all their out of date food to charities, they are less worried about throwing away food. Before that, they would reduce stuff a lot more and take the extra loss as they did not want to be throwing away food. If they have 3 sandwiches going out of date that cost £3.50 each, it’s better to sell one for £2.99 and give the other 2 to charity than to sell all 3 for 49p each.

To add on to this, the reason Sainsbury’s doesn’t reduce bakery items is because the profit margin on them is so ridiculously high. I can’t remember the specific numbers but they only have to sell about 15% of a box of pastries to break even on it, so it doesn’t make financial sense to pay for the printer/labels/labour to reduce them!

I used to do the reductions at Morrisons. We would reduce stuff by 10% at the start of the day and then 25% a few hours before closing. And we would always have to round the price to the nearest 49p or 99p. Only managers had the authority to discount any further than that. But my manager didn’t often work shifts that late in the day, so things never got reduced more than 25%. There also wasn’t a set time of day when we would do it, we would just do it whenever we had the time. If there were lots of customers hounding the reduced section I would often just wait for them to go before reducing to 25% because I didn’t want to be mobbed. The other thing that really annoyed me what the ticket machine didn’t have a button that automatically discounted a %. We had to manually do the calculation in our head, which was really annoying when you had to do it hundreds of times a day. It was stupid, the ticket machine was a computer that could have easily done the calculation, but instead they made us do it which meant it was susceptible to human error.

Most places have changed the way their reduce sections work so now instead of one reduction then one an hour before closing, now it's done multiple times to try and get the company more money (so they might reduce by 5% every few hours rather than one daytime 25% reduction the a further 25% a hour or so before closing.) I worked in multiple shops/supermarkets between 2000-2006 and I can remember reducing fruit pastilles to 1p (as they were going out of date 2 days later) - the rotisserie chickens in Morrisons used to be reduced to 25p around 9pm each night, and I even worked one place where I choose the reduction (I had a label printer machine and I would scan the barcode enter the reduction and print) so they must have trusted me to make the right reduction! Don't think any of those things happen anymore Think it's the same with any 'sales' though, I remember buying clothes/shoes that were massively reduced (once got a pair of leather boots from M&S reduced from £160 down to £15!) nowadays it maybe 10% off max for most things!

The reduced section at my local Morrisons is rubbish. Barely discounted at all. The one in my co-op on the other hand is brilliant and I get my dinner from it several times a week.

Its a mixed bag some are good some are just awful but it's always been like that. They start with an overpriced £5 ready meal and take 50p off so it's now £4.50 so you think to yourself there's better deals at full price but some people see a yellow sticker and assume it's a good deal so guy it anyway. I dont even check them anymore.

Worked at ASDA. The system automatically calculates the discount. There is a discount level for tomorrow's markdowns. Then another level for after 2pm on the day. Then another level for after I think 7 or 7.30 on the day.

I remember people hovering around the reduced section waiting to see if it was a 50% or higher discount not now it's like 50p discount on something that costs £5

Some supermarkets don't need to reduce it much to get rid of it. I noticed there is a scrap between customers when the first reduction happens that I can't imagine much is left that hasn't been destroyed in the process.

Luckily in my Daily store, we do it by hand. So we have a bit of leeway as to how much we reduce stuff. Somethings we would be lucky if we sold any after reducing it down to 10p. Other things, we can take 20% off and it flies off the shelf. So things we know probably aren't going to sell, we can take a bit more off,in the hopes someone buys it.

They seem to do it in two or even three stages - about 20-30% off, half price, then only what's left gets the mad discounts. Presumably the staff who don't sit at tills any more spend lots of time amending yellow stickers.

If you time it right asda will have some crazy deals. Ive plucked a lot of 10p meals in the past, usually people jump on it instantly though so it's a rare find

Depends on the shop. Local asda does 3 reductions on them a day. If you time it right and other people haven’t already got the decent stuff it’s worth a look. Usually it’s all gone before the 3rd reduction happens though. The nearest little tesco gives stuff away after 9pm but the one with the petrol station doesn’t they just do a final reduction at 9pm instead.
