Do you remember a time your friend’s parents told you off as a child?

I was a pretty good kid but I remember accidentally hitting my pal on the head with his guitar when we were, I dunno, 7 or so. His mother gave me what for and threw me out of the house. I went back about five minutes later and rang the bell and asked ‘Please can I get my box of toffees please?’ (I’d taken them with me to share.) She made me stand on the doorstep while she got them.

Do people in the UK use ‘🙏🏻’ a lot?

HeriotAbernethy@reddit

I never use it - to me it’s praying and I’m not religious. Thinking about friends, family and those I interact with on socials, I wouldn’t say they use it either. So, very unscientific straw poll: no.

Can I ask for a full check up?

Posted by CrazedMachopTVC@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 27 comments

HeriotAbernethy@reddit

Nope, such blood tests would cost a lot of money and that is not something they’d do without just cause. Blood pressure, height, weight, sure. However, once you hit a certain age (no idea what it is in England) they will give you an annual check up, which may include height, weight, blood pressure, blood sugar levels and cholesterol levels. Blood pressure monitors can be bought for under £30 though. Omron is a good make.

Straw poll for the people in Great Britain: Have you ever been to Northern Ireland?

Posted by chaos_jj_3@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 921 comments

HeriotAbernethy@reddit

Nope. Have zero intention of going as none of the people I’ve met from NI are particularly pleasant (irrational, I know), and growing up with the backdrop of the Troubles and with the Old Firm on my doorstep I have a pretty jaded view of the place. Have tried to go to Dublin a couple of times for various reasons but life had other plans.

Have your hygiene habits changed since Covid or have you reverted back to pre-pandemic habits?

Posted by According_Sundae_917@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 30 comments

HeriotAbernethy@reddit

My hand hygiene got better with Covid but that has dwindled since (though I still wash them after going to the loo, taking bins out, petting animals, before food prep etc.) Showers were daily pre-Covid but are now every two days unless I’m going out.

What was the UK reaction to 9/11?

Posted by Imperial_nugget@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 874 comments

HeriotAbernethy@reddit

Initially, pissed off that the internet was down, then horror when we were told why and went to watch the TV footage. In the next few days there was slight apprehension that it might happen elsewhere, and eventually we were a bit pissed off that the media was still *full* of it x days later. Obviously not taking away from it being an utterly horrific event which was likely to have wide ranging repercussions, but there were other things going on in the world and having grown up during the Troubles we were rather more used to acts of terrorism.

How can I get my daughter to sleep (and stay) in her own bed?

Posted by No_Worth_2271@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 76 comments

HeriotAbernethy@reddit

Some thoughts. Haven’t read the rest of the thread so apols for any repetition / suggestions already tried. Is the room too hot? Is the bedding too hot or heavy? Is the room dark enough or too dark? (Blackout blinds v nightlight.) Is she eating too near bedtime? Is she tired? More fresh air and exercise will help. Screens off two hours before bed. Is there a routine? A warm bath, bed, some time for reading a paper book. If she got to redecorate the room might she be happier to stay in it? Have you spoken to her about any worries?

Having just flitted I was a bit narked at being told I needed ID to get a knife I’d ordered (passport in a box somewhere, driving licence sent off to DVLA), but the courier took one look at me and just asked for my DOB. I suspect however that - if they’re doing their job properly - they will ask you for ID and refuse to give you the parcel if it shows you’re under 18.

HeriotAbernethy@reddit

Depends. I was with Haymarket Dental which is run by a husband and wife team, therefore their family’s main, possibly sole, income was dependent on the place. She wasn’t too bad - although I have doubts about the filling she said was needed - but he pushed for work that definitely wasn’t necessary. Eventually I left.

Have a look at https://www.myworldofwork.co.uk. It’s Scottish but it may give you some ideas and advice. If there’s an equivalent bricks and mortar place locally I’d recommend going and asking them for advice, and asking some of the places who turn you down why they did so. If it’s because of the gap in your CV, ask them to give you a chance, a probationary period. Also check out healthcare opportunities - they are crying out for staff in social care.

Posted by Designer-Show4071@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 9 comments

Are you brushing too hard? Maybe try a brush with soft bristles. And don’t force the interdental brushes between teeth; use a smaller size. Corsodyl gel rubbed on the gum may help meantime - ask for it at the chemist.

With antibiotics it’s important to space the doses evenly, which adhering to your waking, eating and sleeping pattern may not permit. (Depending on the pill you may need to take them eg an hour before eating or 2 hours after so factor that in.) I have done both 0800/1300/1800/2300 and 0730/1230/1730/2230; you should start with the lunchtime dose today and have a pre/post-dinner time and a bedtime dose.
