Men who grew their hair long late or still have long hair?

Posted by jtsa5@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 331 comments

HarryHaywire@reddit

I had hair down past my elbows from high school until I was 30. I shaved it all off, then grew it back out again a couple years later. Then I cut it AGAIN in my 40's. I grew it out again to my shoulders after the pandemic, but the ravages of time have done a number on my hairline and my wife told me if I grew a skullet she was divorcing me, so now it's buzzed again.

Standard fare for playground songs. Everyone had their own local variation, but somehow we ALL had one. It was a tiktok meme decades before memes existed.

The actual song from the 50's goes Great green globs of greasy, grimy gopher guts, Mutilated monkey meat. Dirty little birdie feet. Great green globs of greasy, grimy gopher guts And me without my spoon

Stroke territory, or why a concussion at work caused me to learn I’m a stroke victim.

So Alive by Ryan Adams is the duet between Morrissey and Bono that never happened.

Look, Ryan Adams was a local musician here for years. He's not a good person. Heartbreaker was a fantastic album though and I liked Whiskeytown a lot at the time.

Anyone own or ride one of these bad boys back in the day?

I have a token sitting in a drawer next to me, but it's from a bowling alley nearby that still uses them (or DID still last time I was there, which in retrospect has been well over a decade now. so maybe not STILL, but fairly recently)

The 90's Style Seems to be Making a Comeback

nostalgia seems to move in 15-20 year cycles. As in whatever was cool 15-20 years ago become the dominant nostalgia of the time. I assume because the people who were children during that period are reliving their youth. We're moving into early 00's revival now. JNCO jeans and butt rock/nu-metal (the stuff they were calling "dad rock" 5 years ago) is cool again.

My dad worked for Southern Pacific railroad in the 70s. I remember going with him to the office and playing on the IBM 029 or the 129 punch card machine.

my dad worked for IBM from the 60s through the 90's. He used to bring home piles of punch card and other weird crap for me to play with, including an Oudin coil (handheld Tesla coil like this - https://www.arborsci.com/products/tesla-coil) that I got to bring in for show and tell in 4th grade.

and our generation wished it was 1968. and then there was a brief disco revival. for the last 15 years or so the 80's and 90's were the hot shit. My 24 spends half his money trying to recreate things from just before he was born. He's OBSESSED with dial up internet and windows 98/2000/xp, and the Playstation 2 and cassette tapes. He bought a CRT tv, and has been trying to cobble together a fake landline so he can use AOL.

Decommissioned the home stereo today. Haven't used it in over 2 years. Everything is through the phone and Bluetooth speakers now.

the only home stereo receivers I still have hooked up are one that is connected to the speakers built in to the house and the only thing I use it for is as a bluetooth connection for my phone and the TV. The other is hooked up to a couple decks and a mixer because my wife likes to pretend she's a drum and bass DJ. I still buy a lot of vinyl as a result.

I feel like I woke up one day and half my life was gone.

Michael Jackson died 17 years ago. Not really surprising 10 year olds don't know who he is. The 80's to them is the same amount of time in the past that the 1940's were to us. I don't know about you, but I didn't really know any of my grandparents music at that age.

DAE call cute girls Betty's in high school? What was your slang term back in the day?

Posted by -betterthanzero@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 69 comments

HarryHaywire@reddit

It's old surfer slang from the 60's. Most likely originated from the Archie comic. Also https://preview.redd.it/a1ygpwcou1mg1.jpeg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=16e81202fd5f19d50688a872155a0b3c616e135c

I pierced both ears back in college in the early 90's when we were still feeling the lingering stigma of what had been an (legitimate in many regions) underground gay code. I ended up with 4 in the left and 2 in the right, which I still have to this day.

I was just in the ER yesterday, for issues that have been nagging me for close to 30 years. I am ALL symptom, no root cause. The ER doc yesterday said I am "medically complicated" and gave me zero answers. As usual. I had a doctor 20 years ago I went to for some abdominal pains that I'd had for years and he said "If it hasn't killed you by now, I wouldn't worry about it too much". Still have the same pains 20 years later. I was diagnosed with something in 2006, went to a specialist who told me "no, you don't have that", and last year I was diagnosed with it AGAIN by a different doctor.

If you road the bus to school in the 80’s was there a song that everyone would sing along to?

Posted by Raynet11@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 186 comments

my Junior High bus had a radio and a "cool" bus driver who let us play tapes. It was 1985, so it was almost always License to Ill or Slippery When Wet depending on who was allowed to choose for the day
