What’s a UK town or city you visited with low expectations… but actually ended up really liking?

Took the kids to The Deep in Hull and then went for a walk to the Marina expecting Hull to be a complete dump and was pleasantly surprised to find a really cool cosmopolitan place. Underrated, probably cos it's a pain in the arse getting there

I can’t sleep and I’m going nuts. Help?

I disagree. There's much more indication of intelligence in an individual's problem solving, creativity or reasoning skills I'd say. I'd take those qualities over a memory test any day of the week. None of that was in the documentary, we've no idea how those girls would perform.

I’m drawing a toad sitting in a pub with a pint and a crossword. I got a red stain on the page and I’m thinking of turning it into a poppy badge. Is this offensive, as a toad could be seen as a negative characterisation of the elderly? I like toads so there’s no harm intended

What is the best and the worst experience you have had with the police in your life?

Posted by rowenaaaaa1@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 137 comments

Nearly every interaction with the police I've had has been good, they've always been very professional. Only thing I can remember is one time by motorbike conked out and I had to push it up a massive hill. Three civilian drivers separately slowed down as they were passing to ask me if I wanted assistance which was really nice. But then the police came past and told me they were going to arrest me if I didn't take it off the pavement. Only people not wanting to help were police. Overall though they get a lot of shit when most of them are decent people.

Rudyard Kipling once wrote "And what should they know of England who only England know?" -- Meaning you learn more about your own country by experiencing other countries. What experience abroad taught you something interesting about the UK?

You're criticising that person for asking questions when they don't know how to do things - but those are the good people. It's the ones that don't ask questions when they don't know how to do things that are more of an issue.

What is the most "off" place you've been to?

With the writers of the new Bond film struggling following his death in No Time To Die - what would you do to reboot the franchise?

Posted by rumoff@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 774 comments

Gloryhorndog@reddit

Either a) have a proper reset, remove all the overblown, overproduced cinematography and gadget bollocks, flashy watches etc ridiculous numbers of henchmen getting killed, maybe even set it in the 50s or early 60s or b) my preference, put it to pasture. What it needs is a director that can really immerse you in a story with vision. Paul Thomas Anderson would be my choice.

You can get excellent venison at a good price at the moment, it's better value than Beef steak I feel. Had some tonight with some mixed greens in a garlicky butter sauce absolutely delicious and feels autumnal

What do you think is the main reason behind the number of motorcycle riders declining?

Posted by __that-guy_@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 132 comments

Gloryhorndog@reddit

I rode for about 20 years, stopped when I had kids. Did a lot riding in France where people are much more biker friendly, the traffic isn't as bad and the weather is better. There are some good places in UK but overall it's just not as pleasant as riding in other parts of the world in my experience.
