What’s a UK town or city you visited with low expectations… but actually ended up really liking?

I think despite a lot of what you hear online there really aren't many places in this country, especially ones of size, that are completely dire and don't have any interest for a visitor. Maybe I just have really low expectations but I've been lucky enough to travel a lot in this country and enjoyed everywhere I've been. I really like a lot of the North East: West of Durham - Esh Winning has the best fish and chips in the world, Ushaw Seminary is gorgeous and set in absolutely stunning countryside. There's a lovely and well-signposted walk along an old railway line from Durham City and buses between all three. Seaham - a coastal village not without its challenges but with some stunning beaches to look for seaglass on, one of the oldest churches in the country, more lovely fish and chips, a few really nice pubs. Sunderland - much bigger but again a really interesting history. Although unfortunately the future looks quite difficult the Glass Centre is still open and well worth a trip, the Empire Theatre is one of the most beautiful in the country, and it's possible to get tickets cheaper and easier for SAFC than almost any other Premier League club (always a great atmosphere on Matchday!)
