I was in Egypt, on holiday. I’d developed food poisoning two days before and so I was in the bathroom whilst watching BBC World: I remember seeing the news that it had initially been reported as being a power surge. May the 52 innocent lives lost be remembered and rest in peace.

Done before and would again. There’s a lot of negativity in young men in particular about first tours and it’s one of the “dirty little secrets” of tours is that they’re NOT 100% awful, 100% of the time. All tours are different, but on those I did, it was probably >95% of the time boredom and cracking on like a normal working day, albeit in a different location, and ~2.5% kinetic action and ~2.5% terror.

So with the Euromillions still sitting at over £200million, the question is not what would you do with it but more how much of it would you give away or donate?

In the vanishingly unlikely event that I won it, I’d give at least half of it away to two or three charities that I’m fond of and support today. The rest? Family mortgages would be paid off, and for the remaining probably £95m I’d put into a high interest trading account - assuming a 2.5% yield, that could result in about £6K per day of additional notional income (of which, of course, one would be taxed to the eyeballs).

Population of the UK < 10 million. Central government does not exist: essentially, its fiefdoms, who may trade with each other. Money is meaningless, there’s nothing to buy, so everything is done by barter.

I had mine aged 32. I left my marriage, left the country and lived overseas for best part of nine years. Divorce happened in the meantime, my ex wife got all the assets (which weren’t much, and I was happy to surrender them). Despite losing my mind for a while, on balance, I’m much happier (with the benefit of SNRI pharmaceuticals) and conscious that if I had stayed and not been medicated, many, many worse things would have been done.

Many, many years ago (33 years ago, crikey), I met the late Queen (my dad was a reasonably senior military officer who worked at the Palace, as on the staff of the ADCs, I was visiting him in his office, she happened to come in). I jumped to my feet at maximum speed, pulled my beret on and saluted her. She very sweetly had the nous to look shocked and said “thank you” before my dad introduced me to her. My dad had been there for a couple of years and apparently there was an understanding that when she came into an office, she was obviously treated with maximum respect, but no need to go through the motions. Some weeks later, she came to where I was working and, much to my bosses chagrin, when she was being shown around, my boss introduced me and she said “What, you, again?” with a big smile. After she left, me and my boss had a conversation-without-caffeine.

My dad is 74, and he’s my oldest living relative. He had a stroke in 2011, and there was some question about whether or not he’d survive but he’s a tough old sod. He now lives in the Scots equivalent of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Left with no feeling or control at all over his left hand side and has had Covid multiple times: every time he gets sick, my brother and I wonder “Oh no, is this it?” and every time he bounces back. My dad was brought up in the west end of Glasgow and he reminds me of the story Billy Connolly told of his dad, checking himself out of the hospital after a stroke, shaking his fist at the sky like “Is that the best you can do, is that all you’ve got?”.
