Are Aldi and Lidl really cheaper?

Posted by Jen83747@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 501 comments

DrStrangeleaf@reddit

Aldi is definitely noticeably cheaper on a food shop, to the point where Im now regularly shocked at how expensive asda is, which used to be my go to. I find lidl is deceptively expensive & the one by me at least has a pretty random selection of stuff. With Aldi I find in *most* cases the quality is on par with branded stuff. As others have said though, their veg can go off quickly, so check the dates on it.

Doner kebab is the food in Germany that was brought by Turkish immigrants & adopted by the locals as their own. Itd be a bit like a british chain called "british tikka masala" or something.

Construction folks: Is the submittal process a massive headache in the UK too, or is this just an American inefficiency?

Posted by jetsonjetearth@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 24 comments

DrStrangeleaf@reddit

The introduction of the BSR after grenfell has caused a bit of an industry backlog as many projects arent getting through their gateway 2 submissions on the first try. Teething troubles with a new regulatory body, but I understand they have made significant improvements to the BSR gateway 2 process so we're expecting things to improve over 2026 with respect to this

Both, my family is quite small, just my mum & my sister, but they are both v tolerant & themselves have queer friends & colleagues. For friends, all of my friend groups are on the same page with this stuff, there are multiple queer folks in all the groups who have felt safe & supported enough to come out.

Very accepting, we generally wouldnt associate with people who weren't accepting of queer folks & anyone who brought homophobia into the group would be called out.

Im currently reading through my Christmas email backlog because the cover I arranged just didnt cover me. And the licence on a key piece of software I need to do the work has expired. Christmas is well & truly over. Ugh, work is so pointless, I just feel like the entire thing is a waste of my one precious life. I feel profoundly alienated from the capitalist grindset hard work bollocks society weve built. Can I just go and be a shepherd on my own in the alps?

My husband feels guilty because he was never taught how to DIY?

Posted by heyho2023@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 192 comments

DrStrangeleaf@reddit

Absolutely. And admitting you dont know & learning is way better than being confidently wrong & damaging your house. Its def toxic masculinity as you say. We're conditioned to believe we should be great drivers, great at DIY, etc & if were not were less 'manly'. but if youve never been taught that stuff how would you know. Theres no such thing as innate building knowledge. Your husbands masculinity is not something anyone can take away from him. Theres no shame in never having learned, its never too late to start. Get him on the youtube DIY train, there are some brilliant resources on there.

DrStrangeleaf@reddit

I sometimes feel a bit like your husband, I never knew my dad & didn't really have a father figure growing up. The good news is that theres loads of good DIY tutorials on youtube so he can learn anything he needs to do that way. No one "just knows" how to do DIY/building work, its all learned skills. Everyone who does know this stuff has been trained/taught it. It doesnt make him less of a man or anything, its just something he hasnt yet learned. Hope you both feel better about it soon

Not all of them, but enough are useless cowboys that you need to be prepared for that when appointing them. The only real solution is to know enough about the job youve hired them for that you can check their work. On big building sites the site managers & architects will do this for every stage of the project. Its called snagging & is sadly essential.

Is it worth going to the GP for mental health reasons?

Posted by InToot@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 70 comments

DrStrangeleaf@reddit

You should definitely go. I was in a similar position some years ago and the GP was able to prescribe anti anxiety meds which have been a game changer. I wish Id gone years before I did. Look at it this way, if they wont help, youre no worse off than you are now but theres a chance you could get the support you need. Good luck!

No one here expects tips and in some cases aremt allowed to keep them. When I worked in a cafe attached to an M&S all tips had to go jnto the charity jar & it was a sackable offence if you were caught keeping them, or with cash on you at all on the shop floor. I would only tip in a country where its necessary due to weak worker rights allowing employers to just not fairly compensate their staff
