Why are run-on sentences more acceptable in British English?

Posted by Icy_Mixture1482@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 368 comments

DerGregorian@reddit

I mean what they said is perfectly correct though. The example given which you quoted is a run on sentence which is different to your original examples because both of those contain punctuation to correct it. In the thing you posted it's even shown below with the two follow ups which correct the run on sentence.

Is using usd for online purchases legal?

Yeah pretty much, if you use a VPN to hide where you live you can benefit from lower VAT rates, avoid paying it all together or just through purchasing things for cheaper you're avoiding paying certain amounts of it. The odds of anything happening are going to be so astronomically small though, you'd have to be seriously going out of your way to abuse the system enough before you faced any real reprocutions outide of just losing your accounts on whatever site it is.

Isn't just luxury web stores, pretty much every streaming service, subscription based things, most things that sell digital products such as games across multiple countries. They'll all have it written into their terms. I never said it was illegal, you literally just mirrored what I said about them just closing your accounts.

DerGregorian@reddit

It's completely different. Using a VPN to get cheaper prices may not be illegal directly but can violate a lot of terms of services for certain things. Also opens up the issue of tax and fraud issues, extremely unlikely you ever get punished criminally for them but there's a chance you could lose your accounts.

DerGregorian@reddit

I'd say the general perception of most morbidly obese people is very negative regardless of gender. Clothing choices do play a fair part too though, have seen plenty of guys with their guys hanging out and plenty of women wearing skin tight leggings that leave very little to the imagination.

How can we stop the rising antisemitism?

Was EDL I was thinking of. Similar things have gone before under different names. I know the definition or race and religion, I'm not an idiot. I'm just pointing out that it can easily be a case of both applying. Yes I agree with that statement but that statement doesn't apply to anything I said. Merely pointing out that there are some very openly racist people out there that will use any excuse you give them to attack others. They don't care if you're following Judaism, if you're atheist, catholic or whatever else. If you're part of a Jewish community you're all the same in their eyes. That was the point I was making regarding the Isis terrorist stuff. They didn't care what religion you were, if you looked like you might be then you basically were. It's why they attacked gurdwaras, Mandirs and mosques.

Posted by Ro-see@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 224 comments

DerGregorian@reddit

Can it not be both? There are plenty of openly racist people looking for anything to use as an excuse to go after someone. Just look at half of the EDF rallies or whatever they're called these days. Half of them are massively racist bigots, they'll happily lump you in with whatever group they want based on skin colour or the way you look. After the Isis stuff it didn't matter if you were Sikh, Hindi or following islam they were all Muslim in the eyes of some.

Would probably depend a lot on how you ask and how well you know each other. Straight up asking for a date during busy times and they have no idea who you are is going to be very different from you asking someone who you've had the odd bit of small talk with if they want to grab a coffee sometime.

I worked at a college so might be a bit different compared to others experiences but yeah. There would be staff often doing 10-11 hour days, get there at 7, leave between 5-6. Pay wasn't particularly great, management was a nightmare and half the kids didn't want to be there.

How do you manage finances as a couple?

DerGregorian@reddit

Functionaly the same sure but reading the statement it makes out like he has no access to it or atleast very limited access/control. I have access to the joint account, I have access to our savings accounts and my own. The only one I can't see or access is hers and I know how much goes into it as it comes out of the joint account that I can see and manage, what she does with it is entierly up to her. If I had spending issues and used it all up within two weeks then that's on me isn't it? and the ensuring all bills are met thing is the point of the joint account.

We might've done it that way but we set the joint account up first for the bills, just easier for us to keep that and have separate personal ones we pay into instead of changing payment details around for work and whatever else.

Prefer ordering via an app instead of at the bar having both options is ideal though, I imagine it makes things considerably quicker and easier for bar staff too. Don't need to move from whatever group i'm with, can continue to talk, don't need to wait for someone infront of me to figure out what sides they want with their bangers and mash.

Sure but if you're paying someone to do an EICR and they say they'll do it for £50 there is no chance in hell you're getting one done that is worth anything. Saying you can get one done for that cheap is technically true but you're just paying someone for a worthless bit of paper because you can guarantee they've done next to no actual testing if any at all.

Your best option is just head to somewhere like seoul plaza or head to one of the more major chinese stores like wing yip. Nongshim neoguri ramyum, nongshim shin ramyum, crispy chilli oil, enoki, rice cakes, light/dark soy, roasted seaweed, kewpie mayo, gochujang, gochugaru, doenjang, pickled radish. Dumplings, meat etc will all depend on what you like and play on making.

As somebody who came to live in the UK from overseas, why are the taxes so high if the services are so poor? Where is the money going?

Posted by ADP_God@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 44 comments

DerGregorian@reddit

Where are you from? I find the bus routes in the majority of places are pretty good. Trains can suck massively if you're not going between major places and travel at short notice though. Tories have stripped back funding time and time again for years so less subsides means the cost ends up getting shifted more and more to the user. That and more and more of it being privatised means the government has even less reason to try and help out. Road conditions is generally worse in and around london than a lot of other places in terms of pot holes and such. A lot of the midlands is pretty good the RAC do reports on it fairly often. Food costs are defintly going up, a lot of the shit going on in the world the last like 5 years has done little to help. Bulk buying stuff is getting more and more beneficial. NHS issues have also kind of spiralled due to the complete collapse of social care and a complete lack of investment in replacing old ass hospitals. Plus during covid every GP was just refusing to see you over anything and suggested you just head to A&E. Couple that with an aging population and the birth rate steadily dropping for the last however long.

Makes sense to me tbf. Monday to Saturday 7am - 10am No waiting or loading. 4pm - 7pm No waiting or loading. Parking wise Monday to Friday From 10am - 3pm Pay at meter, max stay is four hours, no return within an hour. Sunday 8:30 - 2pm Pay at meter, max stay is four hours, no return within an hour. 3pm to 4pm looks like a free for all Monday to Friday, Saturday parking is free outside of the hours mentioned initially and Sunday you only have to pay between 8:30 and 2 otherwise it's free.

Like I said, it varies a lot and I can only speak from my experience so you can't say I am or aren't underestimating anything. I was getting tuped over to a new company so I was going to look at a new job, had plenty to pick from. Had constant emails and calls regarding roles and I still get some now months down the line. I'm an electrician in the midlands, there's no shortage of work for me. I'm not saying others aren't struggling because I know they are and it's clear the market is pretty dire for a lot of roles. It isn't the same for everyone though which is what I said.

Yeah, plenty of people saying it's terrible and they're struggling, I could walk into another job tomorrow pretty easily. Varies massively depending on what field of work you're in.

Which tradespeople do I need to hire to remove my electric fire?

Posted by throwaway9990008866@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 6 comments

DerGregorian@reddit

Would verify that is it a fake chimney breast first, if so call an electrician to disconnect the fire if you're not able to safely do so yourself. Rip the breast out as it'll just be plasterboard and studs if it's fake. Call a plasterer in to tidy the wall up afterwards. As for the insulation you could get it insulated and boarded out but you'd lose some room space, probably worth seeing if you can get the cavity filled assuming there is one.
