How much is still possible via cash? No income tax, no VAT...

Do tax work for lots of lads who subbie under CIS, this is NW England. So theyre working on new builds or groundworking Got brickies and joiners who earnt 60-70k last year.  The lads who half arse it and likely dont turn in Mondays etc. Topping out at 20-30k.  Groundworkers just doing grunt work are generally taking 40-45k. This is top line for everyone - with the nature kf their work meaning they can reclaim tax back on their commute to different sites, leading to rebates of 3k or so.

Over 100k. Every tradesman I know is minted. They have customers balls in a vice due to the lack of tradies. They can charge huge fees

Sounds like someone who hates paying for trades because he has feet for hands after years of working in an office.

That's bs, we might be clearing 100k on paper but by the time tax, ni, private pension, van running costs, insurance, it's well below 50k then there's holidays if we want them which I've not had any in 4yrs due to work constraints, it's very grim being self employed tradesman and I feel like employed people only look at the top number Also don't forget that by the time we are in our 40s to late 50s our bodies are broken and workload has to slow down to accommodate not being as "efficient" therefore dropping down our "100k a year" to say 70-80k but with still the same amount of overheads

Income includes taxes by the way. If you are taking home 50k profit that’s the same as a job earning £68k which is just below the top 10% of all earners.

£60k ish as a spark on 40hr week 5 day week plus one on call weekend per month. Work for a company and PAYE.

Honestly if you are in London or the south you can charge a bit 100k is not really a problem.

I'm a time served spark. Work for a company. Do rotating days and nights. 3x12hr shifts per week. Occasionally get an extra day or two a month overtime. I make £58k.

Doragan@reddit

Is the 58k including overtime or excluding?

Clublandrefugee@reddit

Similar. Industrial spark, 4days on 4 days off, £65k without overtime

I'm 35 and am bored of my desk based IT job. Would it be completely ridiculous to retrain into this career?

Not as much as a very good tradesman.

Heating engineers working self employed - I expect a lot. Just got a quote for a simple replacement of a boiler in the same location.  The boiler costs £1100 on plumbing websites.  Quote is £3800. Expect it to take 1 day. Pretty good daily rate there.

Surely £0 since they never actually turn up?

My brother is a self emplyed joiner/builder, he’ll sub contract for plumbing or electrics, he said recently he earned £90k last year, didn’t mention what he paid out to subs or if that was included, or any other expenses that would take away from that number but i dare say that’s not what he banked at the end of the day

How much realistically for a tradesman who is self employed vs one who isn’t?
View on Reddit #66279027

DerGregorian@reddit

Impossible to answer, it will vary massively between trade, location and what you're doing in said trade. Could be anywhere from 30-50k quite easily.

The economy is a really underrated part I see lots of builders or other trades guys on instagram essentially saying how people in offices are dumb and trades are king. Which sure to an extent. But it relies on people feeling financially well off to pay these people to do their extension, their kitchen etc.

I imagine quite alot, at least more than me. I've had to learn to DIY things now because I can't afford their services.

Way more than you think considering most have a £26k tax fee allowance once the misses is a director but looks after the kids all day, new van, electronics, fuel all gets booked against the business as a tax deductible expense and they are taking home £2400 month on paper but another £1200 in cash and also getting child benefit or top up from the government for being low income. Also tax free additional to pensions and if at the end of the year there’s too much in the tax pot the accountant lets you take a £7k tax free dividend from the business. My best guess is a well established plumber or electrician is making the equivalent of a salaried professional earning £55-65k on the PAYE system. Source: know people who have disclosed this and are in the trades…their accountant is their best friend.

Electrician- 0/60/250 / 350 day depending on the day.
View on Reddit #66303231

EyeUnfair2940@reddit

Varies depending on trade and work. Residential will be priced differently to industrial for example.
View on Reddit #66301254

LennonC123@reddit

Varies. usually start between £25k - £30k but a lot of people want the big money straight away, and end up jacking after a few months. Someone with several years’ experience will usually earn anywhere between £45k-£75k. Self employed usually want between £200-£300 a day but then you have to factor in other things like weather, if they like their holidays etc.
