I’ve worked in new car dealerships for 4 decades …a lot of people were financially hurt badly by pretty much ANY brand name you wanna plug in there. The one constant I’ve witnessed across 4 decades with multiple brands is that “Finance dept are snakes”

I’ve been a “Master” Level service tech for both Toyota and Nissan. I wholeheartedly agree (& have SEEN) that there’s a “Toyota Tax” just from the attitudes in the showroom. All of that being said, I made more money working on Nissans.

I’ve had one fail, and shortly after, another one failed, then a third one …all I heard from the customer was “…ever since ya…” and they started losing faith in my ability. I just started quoting “One” AND “All” and leaving the option to the customer, with the explanation that “Hey, if one is bad, the rest will probably follow soon”

1- I’m an auto mechanic, so breakdowns aren’t gonna worry me (and I make them 100% roadworthy on the cheap first), 2- I buy them cheap, 3- they’re cheap to insure (Liability only), 4- No Fucks Given in traffic (go ahead, TRY to cut me off, or TRY to block me at a merge…because I’ll kill us both)

All it takes is to be well set up and THEN have your spouse’s employer embezzle his business partner, blame the managers (of which your spouse is one), have your spouse get arrested and held on a $100,000 bond facing 15 years in a State Penitentiary, have the court case drag out 11 years to the point that you deplete all your savings and lose your house, then come to find out that the allegations are not provable, but the employer and his business partner have long since skipped the country so there is no means of recourse …then end up divorced, and find yourself in your mid-50s with nothing to show for any of your work over the years …that’s the “retirement planning” I now need to overcome …a daunting task to say the least.

Change battery due to age as part of regular maintenance?

Posted by doodlefartss@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 93 comments

Clean-Entry-262@reddit

I’ve quoted them to customers based on age, as well as “getting close on age, and winter is coming” (as I live in Chicago and winters can be suddenly brutal) …it would suck to knock out a ton of Christmas shopping, maxing the credit cards, and then walking to the car with armloads of shopping bags in an icy, blowing snowstorm, only to find that the battery has suddenly gotten too weak to crank/start the car …so now you have a tow bill in addition to the unexpected expense of a battery and full charging/starting/battery tests. Some “Merry Christmas” that would be, huh? Let’s just nip that in the bud and put a new battery in today.

They didn’t not know I was going to do that while we were making the deal …I just wanted to know the actual selling price, not a payment (payments are easy enough to calculate in one’s own head anyways, if you know the actual selling price and how much you plan to finance)

Finance???? …my first car was a rat-trap that I bought with money I earned from working in a grocery store …my kids were all “gifted” whatever extra car I had available in my driveway (I’m an auto mechanic and always picked up broken cars to fix and sell …this had its roots in the fact that 1- I always liked cars, and 2- I needed to fix that rat-trap I bought with grocery store earnings)

My phone rings off the hook with offers because I have friends at many other dealerships and service managers always asked their staff if they know any qualified people looking for work. I happen to also know one young lady who like to say her partner is “An unemployed auto technician” …umm, NO such thing. More like an “Unemployed alcoholic and drug addict”, as that’s more likely the case.

Often, I’ve heard this argument applied to lesser cars like Camaros and Mustangs …I originally heard it applied to a Lexus SC back in ‘92 …but the argument can carry …and it certainly isn’t related to “insurance costs”.

Clean-Entry-262@reddit

It’s not about insurance costs (if you can afford these types of cars, you can easily afford the insurance) …the back seat is for tricking the wife into thinking it could double as a “family car” if it absolutely HAD to …it provides justification to the spouse.

“For insurance purposes” is an incorrect answer …if someone can afford these high line cars, they can easily afford the insurance …the REAL reason is “to justify the car” - Hubby wants a sports car, Wifey says “You don’t need a sports car, we have kids” and Hubby points to the scrawny back seat and says “Well…it has a back seat, so if we HAD to bring the kids along, we could” …and this justifies the sports car to the wife.
