The driver was arrested
LuisChoriz@reddit
Wtf?! That shit had children in it. I hope this idiot got fired and charged with child endangerment.
Zealousideal-Tap-713@reddit
Its says it in the description that they were arrested, and I know the company fired them for this.
They got super lucky that they had room to pull up, or it would've been a tragedy. Whoever is driving not only didn't stop before the track and check for an incoming train, they failed to watch for proper clearance as well.
SycoJack@reddit
They didn't have enough room and should have been pushing cars out of the way. They nearly got those kids in the back killed, they missed by inches. That was insane.
arrynyo@reddit
Facts. And they shouldn't have been on the tracks period. There's a reason they train bus drivers to stop BEFORE the tracks. Both ways for trains arm down or not. Not supposed to move over the tracks until they know for sure they can cross completely. I bet all those parents were ready to beat the brakes off that bus driver.
KatieTSO@reddit
Not just training. Federal law.
coolborder@reddit
Yep, and open the window and door to listen for trains.
I drove bus in the mornings for a couple years for extra money and it boils my blood to see some of the dumb shit bus drivers do.
WackoMcGoose@reddit
Did your school district have the kids do the "make a V sign with your fingers to get people to be quiet" thing that mine did in 2nd grade? I never understood why that particular hand sign...
SoiledFlapjacks@reddit
NW Ohio here, and we did that, too. We called em “bunny ears,” I guess cuz bunnies are quiet or something?
Existing_Inside5200@reddit
Mine definitely did
coolborder@reddit
I have never heard of that.
WackoMcGoose@reddit
For some reason, it seemed to be the universal shushing symbol on school buses in my area (western WA), even when I moved to a school district with no train crossings... 🤔
SamuraiJono@reddit
Heh. My stepson's school did quiet coyote. You touch your middle and ring finger together with your thumb with pinky and pointer finger extended. Also looks like kon from Chainsaw Man for my anime nerds.
Technical-Flow7748@reddit
Where was that school district? Antarctica?
LunaticSongXIV@reddit
'80s and '90s kid, WA, you just unlocked a memory for me
Dead_Namer@reddit
Was the person who told you that English by any chance? That means fuck off over here if it's palm towards you.
WackoMcGoose@reddit
Beats me. I'm Washingtonian, I don't know if there's that many Brits around here...
SiegelOverBay@reddit
I didn't even drive a bus or get a passenger endorsement, but when I went through training for my class B CDL, the trainers made us do the railroad check on every crossing. Even though it's not a required daily step for a standard class B, they really hammered it in and IIRC, you would fail the test if you didn't do it during the test. Some hazmat requires similar safety precautions and I guess that was the reason why. Personally, I don't want to get hit by a dang ol train, so I don't fuck with them at all.
Rampag169@reddit
Shit I look both ways and creep up on the crossings and my license is just a class d (regular one).
KatieTSO@reddit
To be specific, any placardable quantity. I've got the hazmat & tanker endorsement (X) and passenger.
arrynyo@reddit
Same here. When I'm working, I'm taking every precaution at a railroad crossing.
KatieTSO@reddit
Same
SiegelOverBay@reddit
I got tanker and much later got hazmat endorsement, just never had a need for passenger. But they really wanted us to talk them through the steps in case we were pulling something that required them. I appreciated the extra reinforcement, I know the rules are written in blood.
KatieTSO@reddit
Agreed. It was drilled into us too, since I got my CDL at my bus agency. Yay, public transit.
williswillardthe3rd@reddit
Not only that, bus drivers have to open the driver window and front door and listen for trains
nortyflatz@reddit
Unless we can see unobstructed for 500 feet in both directions.
nortyflatz@reddit
We're not even allowed to shift gears while crossing RR tracks.
This was scary.
Handies@reddit
They train anyone with a cdl to stop before the tracks, if you can’t clear it.
EscapeWestern9057@reddit
They're lucky it was cars infront of them that could be pushed out of the way. Could have just as easily been aoaded triaxle that you're not pushing with a school bus.
Tremerefury@reddit
Actually, they didn't miss. You can hear the train hit the bus. They're just lucky the damage was only cosmetic.
Glaviano87@reddit
The train hit it. Watch the video again, but focus on the back. You can see the bus rock from the impact and a little impact cloud of debris from the side of the bus.
Zenlight@reddit
Not just the kids in the back. Everyone on the bus.
LonleyWolf420@reddit
I'm not even sure it was inches.. I think it barely got it
SycoJack@reddit
Yeah, someone said it actually gets knicked, which is fucking wild. The sheer fucking luck that there wasn't more damage is amazing to say the least.
Nearby_Ad6870@reddit
Look closer, the train made contact
Not-A-Pickle1@reddit
And risk damaging the car in front of them? No way man! /s
ColorsLookFunny@reddit
Didn't even really miss. There is a pic of the bus with the scratch marks on it from where you can see the train clipped it.
OxycontinEyedJoe@reddit
If a train is coming and there's no room to pull up, tough shit. I'm in a diesel power schoolbus, I'll take my chances with whatever is in front of me.
Blue_Veritas731@reddit
In my area, school buses are now electric. Not sure what kind of pushing power they have.
Azzacura@reddit
100% going to ram the car in front of me instead of cause hundreds of thousands in damage to a train and tracks
BRICH999@reddit
the money is a non factor when driving a bus full of children. i dont care if it was a ferrari 250gto in front filled with faberge eggs, going to get the kids out of the path of a train first and deal with insurance and lawsuits later.
Azzacura@reddit
I forgot about the kids already.
I really shouldn't drive a school bus....
KatieTSO@reddit
Agreed. Might not be hirable as a driver ever again afterwards, but that should be covered by your insurance/carrier. Maybe something criminal for reckless driving and the railroad grade crossing offense, but that's not a lawsuit.
WackoMcGoose@reddit
That's chump change compared to potentially being sentenced to death (it's entirely possible in some jurisdictions!) if kids had been killed by the train.
Careful-Mammoth3346@reddit
You can always avoid that situation
Correct_Writer_3410@reddit
In the video yes, but not if it's multilane and one or multiple vehicles cut over without signaling just after the tracks while you're already partially across. I'd be laying on the air horn though
Occams_RZR900@reddit
I think the point is more, if you made the mistake in the first place, don’t make another greater one. The solution is ram shit outta yer way.
arrynyo@reddit
Yea you getting fired regardless, might as well not add murdering children to it.
thebigbossyboss@reddit
Oh hell yeah
Fibrosis5O@reddit
I bet they thought they were safe too like “whew that was a close one… heh hopefully that doesn’t get back to the boss”
TheMetalWolf@reddit
The children, too?
KawasakiFever223@reddit
School bus drivers are just part time too at that, goes to show the level of education u need to be school bus driver.
wispyhurr@reddit
This is your average driver. School bus drivers got too complacent.
East_History1325@reddit
Swift is going to scoop them up
rvlifestyle74@reddit
Indeed already sent a job match to their inbox.
wispyhurr@reddit
Yeah, fuck you. School bus drivers are paid an absolute pittance and the screening is pathetic. Like to see you do better. This is literally the average driver.
LuisChoriz@reddit
Nah, fuck you! I’m a professional I’ve had my license 30 years CDL, tanker, hazard, and doubles and triples no accidents. If you’re trying to support this dumb shit and/or trying to justify it with the lack of pay, and average driver, or screening process then you’re just as dumb as this driver if not dumber. Kick rocks clown!
Liontamer67@reddit
They were clipped per the news report out of Orlando. Really pisses me off.
Pitiful_Yogurt_5276@reddit
School bus driver, they absolutely should. That was 100% illegal and you are 1000% told not to do this kind of shit
sparrow_42@reddit
Yeah JFC that was terrifying. Better have been their last time driving a bus or having a Public Passengers license.
DefiantComposer9469@reddit
Yeah situations like that are exactly why those rules exist, it only takes one bad judgment call and things go sideways fast. People get used to crossings and start treating them casually until something like this happens. Definitely one of those reminders you don’t ignore.
City-Wock@reddit
There's a lady I went to CDL school with who was a bus driver for years. She was by and far the most clueless person in the whole school. I'm talking worse than both the 18 and 19 year olds that were there. Got virtually every single question wrong, always would pick the most stupid and dangerous decision, and was always late to class. I have no idea where they find these people. I think as long as you have a clean background check, they will hire you no matter what.
envy841@reddit
Every school district in the country has a shortage of bus drivers and has for decades. It’s a complex issue.
We had a driver who drove for years then got drunk on some holiday, partied, didn’t go to bed till 4 am and had to be in to drive at 5am. Still drunk, he takes some speed or uppers, and come in drunk and high. Fell asleep at the wheel with a loaded bus and drove thru a front yard into a house
Pitiful_Yogurt_5276@reddit
I’m a school bus driver. It isn’t really complex imo. The government treats it like a part time job and not a career.
Parts of the country pay them like $17 an hour for an insanely high risk and stressful job.
In my area you’re lucky to break 30 hours a week and the split shift makes you really have 12 hour days.
I’m trying to get out and got my semi truck license. Every company in the world is telling me driving a school bus for 7 years, with highly precious cargo, doing pre trips every day, adhering to federal standards and laws, operating and testing air brakes and so on aren’t experience and I can’t get a local job.
unsettledinky@reddit
I remember at my rural school, most of the bus drivers were also teachers/janitors/assorted staff. Then there was a small pool of drivers just for away events, since the regular drivers couldn't drop their usual daytime school job to drive.
One time someone called in a bomb threat, back before that was a commonish thing, and they loaded everyone up on busses to evacuate. All the drivers that already had classes just took their class with them to the bus barn, but the rest of the drivers were anyone they could get. By some random chance when I got on the bus, the driver was my DAD (also a teacher). Like what were the odds.
ProudChoferesClaseB@reddit
yea child safety is important and all that according to the govt
except the same authorities only wanna pay $18 an hour...
Pitiful_Yogurt_5276@reddit
And have it be part time only and not a sole career. For such an iconic American job we are sure looked down upon and not respected
ProudChoferesClaseB@reddit
I'm okay with part-time. Obviously the way school bus driving Works makes it difficult to have a second job, but part-time in and of itself is not the problem. Low wages are bigger issue
arrynyo@reddit
It's not complex. They don't pay anything. I did it for one school year the pay was shit. I couldn't afford to keep working there.
Spankpocalypse_Now@reddit
People would riot if we proposed a half cent tax increase to pay for safer school bus drivers.
NekoboyBanks@reddit
I fucking hate American anti-tax culture. We love to reap the public benefits of taxes, but paying them feels like a personal slight by the government, for some reason?
ProudChoferesClaseB@reddit
to be fair, the bus is probably run by a contractor (read: middleman) who takes a giant cut and pays the drivers a pittance.
Blue_Veritas731@reddit
How about instead of piling yet ANOTHER tax on top on people, you insist that the govt do a better of allocating the tax money it ALREADY gets?! I mean, I'm glad that rising prices on everything isn't a concern for you, but for the VAST majority of people in this country, it IS. We don't need more taxes, taking yet More money out of our pockets.
AaronTuplin@reddit
Right? The school district I'm in brags about how much they pay their drivers but according to the bus drivers I've talked to they only get paid 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. Like fantastic I made $100 today
ProudChoferesClaseB@reddit
don't worry, why pay 'em decently to look after the 20 kids on their CMV when you can just threaten 'em w/ prison time if they screw up?
/s
Banana_Stanley@reddit
I get paid for 5 hours a day even though my route doesn't take me that long (closer to 4). And then for extra money you can do field trips and they're always desperate for summer school drivers. Most of my coworkers are retirees but it works well for me since 1) I'm not the main bread winner in my house and 2) I can still make it to all the various appts my kids and I have during the midday.
KatieTSO@reddit
I'd probably drive school buses once I retire from city buses in like... 40 years?
EscapeWestern9057@reddit
This is literally the answer to every single industry that you hear "there's a (insert profession here) shortage"
Every single so called shortage is caused by too low a pay, too poor of working conditions or a combination of both. And the fix for it almost always is "more pay" and "treat employees better". But it's easier for them to cry about a shortage then it is to actually pay people enough to keep them.
My first mechanic job was like that and in this case because ignorance because my boss didn't pay attention to anything that wasn't the shop or sports. So he struggled to find any good mechanics to work there, I at 5 years experience was making $14 an hour. The problem? Walmart was starting employees at 16 an hour. Why would anyone go work at a shop, having to bust your ass in the heat and cold working semi outside, while trying to figure out what engineers got wrong and oh yeah, if you mess up, like on someone brakes you're going to jail... For less pay then what you could earn standing around in air conditioning stocking shelves?
The reason I said the issue was ignorance (because he is a genuinely nice guy) is that when I told him what Walmart's starting wage was, he legitimately had zero idea. He was still operating like it was 2005 where he's paying 3 times what McDonald's was paying, and instead even McDonald's around here was starting people off at $15 an hour.
arrynyo@reddit
A simple solution to a problem, and they don't even think about it until it becomes THEIR problem.
Boss- "Why do you need the weekends off now?"
Employee- "Well I need the extra money to pay for my daughter's medicine, so I got a second job."
Boss- "Why can't you afford it? I pay for my kids medicine no problem!"
Employee- "Sir you make $350k a year. I make a fraction of that."
Boss- "Well that sucks. Hope you figure it out."
-2 months later-
Boss- "Why are you quitting?”
Employee- "I found a job that pays me enough to afford my daughter's medicine and I can put some money back in savings."
Boss- "I don't understand why you would leave me hanging like this!"
Employee- "Yea that's the problem, byeeeee!!!"
EscapeWestern9057@reddit
I used to have to tape and ziptie my shoes together and my boss had the gall to say "don't we pay you enough to buy shoes"... I was making $9 an hour and spending half my wages on fuel to drive to work. Oh and the kicker was I wouldn't get raises because "you're at the pay cap", meanwhile new employees were getting paid $13 an hour. Oh and I was supposed to be making extra because I worked night shift.
I got lucky though, the store manager quit, meaning the logical thing was to have the assistant manager become the manager, the shift lead become the assistant manager and the most senior employee (me) become shift lead... Nope, company brought in an outside manager instead. Then looked shocked when I quit for an actual career.
My current job I'm both paid well and treated well. At the end of the day, I make more money driving my boss's tri axle dump truck, then my boss makes from it. I'm paid percentage, so the more the truck makes, the more I make. I'm also the company mechanic and I'm also the only remaining driver. My boss knows he's got it good with me, and so is highly motivated to keep me happy. I will never work for a company large enough to have assigned employee numbers again, F that.
MountainHarmonies@reddit
This is it in a nutshell. If I have a CDL then I have options and they are gonna have to pay me MORE to haul children. Instead it's the opposite
KatieTSO@reddit
Exactly! They all have CDL schools where I'm at and pay people to get their CDL there, just like my city bus agency paid me to get my CDL. It's because nobody likes these jobs. I'm insane enough I actually like being a bus driver.
supernova-juice@reddit
My aunt's high school yearbook had a 2 page spread dedicated to bus drivers. Fun fact: they were all students.
Maybe it's time we brought that back.
Then again those 17 year olds looked 30 in the picture... but it was the 70s 😂
Pitiful_Yogurt_5276@reddit
I knew a guy with a criminal record who got through. Idk how to this day or why he told me lmao
MustangMark83@reddit
It’s cuz the pay is shit and they have to deal with bratty kids. Most qualified drivers don’t want it
TheLastGenXer@reddit
its not the pay so much as the split shifts and the difficulty in getting benefits.
either you dont get enough hours through the company.
or you make too much money for help through your state.
plus the job would be 1000% better with an aid. id rather have an aid and be paid less.
ive driven school bus for years (on and off)
envy841@reddit
And a lot of laws, factors in the market, it’s a technical job, lots of moving parts. No one wants the work. endemic of a failing society

prettyboricua95@reddit
i would be PISSED if my child was on that bus smh 🤦🏽♀️ but also sadly not suprising cuz i see a lot of bus drivers drive reckless asl
Pitiful_Yogurt_5276@reddit
I’m a school bus driver and I’m pissed.
It’s a fucking crime that USA has done everything in its power to make School bus driver a part time job and not a full fledged career
ProudChoferesClaseB@reddit
I mean, part-time isn't bad per se, there are trucking jobs w/ compressed workweeks where you run 3 days, 12 hours a day, etc.
The nature of school bus schedules means it's gonna be kinda wonky.
They need to figure out who benefits from "mother's hours", do a better job recruiting those kinds of people, and pay them enough to take it seriously!
Pitiful_Yogurt_5276@reddit
No.
It should be a career. That pays people enough to work only that job on.
ProudChoferesClaseB@reddit
OK - then wth are they gonna do during the middle hours downtime between morning and evening run?
lunch monitor, teacher's aide?
Pitiful_Yogurt_5276@reddit
What are you so mad about?
ProudChoferesClaseB@reddit
So I asked how you're going to fill up a part-time job with enough additional hours to make it full time... and your responses something something why you mad bro?...
Look if you can't have an actual discussion about your proposal then why bother putting the idea out there
Pitiful_Yogurt_5276@reddit
I didn’t say full time. I said a career.
You’re the one who melted down about school bus drivers MUST do something between split shifts.
ProudChoferesClaseB@reddit
Yeah they generally will need to have something to do between split shifts to get 8 hours of pay. That's just common sense
Tiny-Proof3602@reddit
“67, female, bus driver seat” driving wreckfully
Occams_RZR900@reddit
Huge shortage of people willing to drive a school bus these days. They’ll take what they can get.
Spankpocalypse_Now@reddit
The problem is that it’s a part time job that takes up your whole day. Outside of retirees, nobody can afford to do that job.
The unpopular solution that will expand the pool of potential drivers is to increase their pay. But we can’t even get Americans to admit teachers deserve higher pay, let alone bus drivers.
BleuTyger@reddit
And by Americans, you mean corporations, organizations, board members, and our bloated, geriatric government?
Zealousideal-Tap-713@reddit
Yeah, the people I'm seeing who stick around are retirees or those who are able to get paid in the midday. I'm tired of being broke and currently looking for work elsewhere.
Mondschatten78@reddit
And this is why in some districts, teacher's aides or other faculty are bus drivers.
Black000betty@reddit
Yeah, and employer CDL factories, sorry schools, can be pretty iffy.
BeastlyLuv1@reddit
Truth! I am a school bus driver and the ones we do have, call out whenever they get the chance.
collegepreppymuscles@reddit
Damn this driver should be fired immediately
srhsrhrshs@reddit

DapperJackal96@reddit
Terminated that same day and arrested and charged with 29 counts of felony child endangerment
ProudChoferesClaseB@reddit
yea I saw that - they're gonna make an example of her to all the other drivers.
but will they double check the existing driver roster to make sure they're up for the job? will they increase pay to find better drivers?
hell no!
Dragex11@reddit
Based on the caption, she was arrested. Another person linked a news article saying she was charged 29 times for this.
No_Butterscotch1150@reddit
Yvonne Hampton slapped with 29 charges.
This bitch was qouted as saying ' Not gonna stop for no train.'
Pitiful_Yogurt_5276@reddit
Whoa. So she just confessed to breaking federal law.
ProudChoferesClaseB@reddit
your concern is she violated the law? what about the kids she endangered?
Jimlee1471@reddit
Dammit.
Of course it happened in Florida. Like we don't have a bad enough reputation for chaos and bad decisions already
wispyhurr@reddit
This is the result when you let the average driver become a school bus driver.
jda404@reddit
Wow what a shitty person. One think to make a huge mistake, but it was no mistake by that comment. She just wanted to beat the train and nearly killed a bunch of kids by not just being patient and waiting for the train to pass. Glad the kids were okay and really glad she won't be driving a bus ever again.
JackxForge@reddit
fucking straight to the chair with her. fuck.
SadnessOutOfContext@reddit
I actually clicked through and read the NYP article because that quote was so wholly and completely unbelievable.
But I believe it, given the prevalence of video and audio recording of drivers. NYP is a trash rag, but I can't find a single reason to doubt the quote.
Fucking lunatic.
Ur_Fav_Step-Redditor@reddit
She needs to be packed out! Put her in a blender with the 29 mothers of those kids 😮💨
hallethehurricanexx@reddit

ProudChoferesClaseB@reddit
"not gonna stop for no train" - 67 y/o bus driver
that's whachu get when u only pay $20 an hour
Independent_Leg7358@reddit
Did you hear that at the end? I couldn't move because my seatbelt. Seatbelts aren't needed in busses and kill kids. Ever seen a bus catch fire? They go up fast.
bud440@reddit
WOW! Buses have seat belts now.
wispyhurr@reddit
Clearly no one cares about children because if they did, school bus drivers would be paid a lot more and they’d be the cream of the crop. Unfortunately, they are paid a pittance and literally anyone can get their class 2 license. Blame society, not this individual woman.
tc6x6@reddit
Oh fuck off with that bullshit. It's her fault, not society's, that she entered a grade crossing she couldn't clear.
Tangojacks0n@reddit
Bro, she pushed the car in front of her and SAVED bus full of kids! U guys serious?!
tc6x6@reddit
Yeah, I'm serious. She shouldn't have started crossing the tracks until she could get all the way across and clear them.
Typical_Gate_1876@reddit
That’s exactly why you never rush crossings.
SufficientState2247@reddit
Holy damn, that had kids in it AND it was a brand new IC CE school bus.
Clean-Entry-262@reddit
Years back, in the far northwest suburbs of Chicago, we had a bus that did this and it actually got HIT by the train and several high school students were killed.
MatthewPlayzer2051@reddit

This is horrible, some may have PTSD now. If train struck bus, even just the very end, it could had terrible after effects including potential serious injuries or more. One may not like waiting on train but lives are important, once gone, there is no coming back.
John9250@reddit
I was just thinking “God I hope there weren’t any kid on there” because that train did clip the bus it looks like. Then it cut to inside the bus. Yeah I’m definitely glad the driver was arrested. Also, when tf did they start putting seatbelts in those buses?
nortyflatz@reddit

DuubyDuu@reddit
How did they not know they were in the fucking tracks? Your side mirrors show the end of your vehicle! I didn't see anything about the driver being charged for this? Also, I'm sorry but I'm pulling into the hwy and taking my chances over leaving the rear end of the bus on tracks. People make mistakes i get it but when you have other people's safety to worry about you better be making extra sure you don't make one...
DigEnvironmental7490@reddit
I ended up stuck in traffic diverted around that collision. They blocked off the roads for about a mile around it. People who hadn't heard what had happened assumed it was a dangerous chemical spill.
Supposedly the kids were so unruly on the bus that the driver couldn't hear anything and was just looking forwards with tunnel vision.
It was obvious there wasn't enough room for the bus to stop where it was so I couldn't understand why they didn't push out into traffic on Route 14 - the speed limit is only 35 mph there so a collision to the side of the front of the bus wouldn't have been anywhere near as bad as being hit by a 50-55 mph train.
65frank@reddit
I was listening to WGN radio that day and the crime reporter (Larry Shriner) was on the scene, he was an old Chicago Cop and all he said on the radio was this is bad. He was shocked.
ranaldo20@reddit
There was also a horrible one in Tennga, GA a couple of years after this. Senseless and tragic.
Spidergawd68@reddit
I lived in Fox River Grove for a time, years after this tragedy. Everyone calls it "Angel's Crossing" to this day, and cops DO NOT fuck around with anyone not strictly obeying the signals.
Upstairs_Taco@reddit
none of this kids ran to the front of the bus??
GoMake_me_a_sandwich@reddit
As a professional driver, the amount of school buses I see on the highways blowing past me as I drive the speed limit is incredible. I would never put my kid on a school bus.
Puzzleheaded_Ad9659@reddit
And since then those kids walked to school everyday and the bus driver was arrested and fired.
the end
FatCrusher9000@reddit

BouncingSphinx@reddit
It looks like there’s a slight bit of shake to the bus as soon as the train passes behind it.
QueenScottish@reddit
Yes there is! The train nicked the bus that's why the kids in the back sprung up and looked back! During my time in the CDL driving program, my group and mentor saw a school bus, a SCHOOL BUS, drive through on a red light. One of us reported them to their school district transport immediately after.
CorrugatedSphincter@reddit
I used to drive by a school bus depot/ yard on my commute. I would REGULARLY see 1-3 busses run red lights leaving it each morning. I called the district almost once a week, but until I left that job it never got better. Probably still a mess.

Holy sour owl shit Batman. What the faulk was that? Someone had the presence of mind to record that. Thank God. Can you imagine the train engineer seeing that school bus full of kids. Absolute shit-stain moment!
JalocTheGreat@reddit
I feel for the driver cause one time in heavy traffic I was stuck before the tracks for over 20min not enough space in front of me to go over the tracks, but people kept cutting me off not giving me room to go over. I had to call local Police non-emergency to stop people just so I could cross the tracks.
BigD93klover@reddit
I was in Boron California. Behind a school bus that drove across the train tracks without even slowing, let alone stopping.
I took a photo and reported the driver to te school bus officials.
I was told stopping for trains is not mandatory.
I reported it to the city and have not heard anything back.
eyelevel@reddit
Some places if the crossing is at a traffic light, or marked exempt, it's okay.
BigD93klover@reddit
I understand that. However, that is not the case here. There was no light, nor was there an exempt sign.
wispyhurr@reddit
Why THE FUCK would anyone be a school bus driver? The liability is insane. The pay for a job with that kind of liability is stupid
ForgottonTNT@reddit (OP)
Yea that’s true , I remember when I went to the dmv to get my passenger endorsement added to my license and the lady ask me was I going to add the school, I said Fuck No!! 😂
eyelevel@reddit
If it weren't for the cost of insurance, I'd definitely contract myself out and do charter trips, but $10,000 /year is infuriating knowing how some people drive.
wispyhurr@reddit
I wish people could understand this and realize the issue is both pay and the vetting process
RelevantTower3010@reddit
Doesn't even seem like they directed the kids to move.
RackingUpTheMiles@reddit
Who hires these drivers? I'm talking like everywhere too. I've also noticed on the highway, they go SIGNIFICANTLY slower than the flow of traffic.
SuperConfused@reddit
School bus companies like First Student are terrible places to work. They record everything, but don’t stick up for drivers. Ever. They will threaten drivers if they are not wearing safety glasses or not wearing vests, but they keep drivers who are unsafe. They don’t keep drivers on a set schedule, and they send them home then require them to come back later.
It is a horrible job that chews through anyone who is worth a fuck and not just there because they want to help kids. A guy I work with’s wife is a manager for one of their districts. They go through hundreds of drivers a year.
Woahgold@reddit
School buses have their own lower speed limits by law.
RackingUpTheMiles@reddit
There's zero reason they should be doing 45 in a 70. I'm governed to 63 and I often pass them like they're not even moving. I've seen them doing 30 in a 65. I don't have kids, but I sure as hell wouldn't want them riding in a vehicle that's obstructing the flow of traffic by doing half the speed limit.
MickJCaboose@reddit
All cdl driving jobs have AI dashcams that will give you points for following too close (4 seconds or less). When people pass right in front of us we have to slow down to avoid getting points, this results in more people cutting us off and us slowing down more.
WackoMcGoose@reddit
So in other words, either you get "ticketed" by a clanker spying on your dashcam, or you get real-ticketed by a cop for not going the speed limit on a freeway...
MickJCaboose@reddit
Haven't been ticketed by police yet
Zealousideal-Tap-713@reddit
Them being hired isn't the problem, as I bet they're not new; it's complacency. They've been driving for years and slowly, stop following rules and protocols put in place for a reason. I've noticed that tends to happen with driver who have been there for years, as I've been driving for 6 months now.
JonTravel@reddit
That's why, in California, School Bus Drivers must renew their permit with the CHP every 5 years. It's the full test, exactly the same as when the first take it.
pjbug@reddit
I don't know about other states, but in California the law states 50mph max with children onboard and 55 max at all other times. Source: I drive a school bus
JonTravel@reddit
55mph
Source: California Vehicle Code section 22406
Longjumping_West_907@reddit
School busses are governed to something like 50 mph. It might be federal law.
thejojones@reddit
Definitely not federal. I drive a school bus in Missouri and most of ours are governed to 67 mph but we have a couple that can go 75. That said, our district policy says we're supposed to drive 5 under all the time (with or without students on board).
phat86@reddit
Not a chance
mike15835@reddit
Yeah buses are limited on speed or underpowered.
RainierCamino@reddit
They need part-time drivers that are willing to put up with an underpowered bus full of screaming little hellions. They're hiring anyone who walks in the door and passes a DOT physical.
A lot of states have laws about how fast buses can travel when in service. Typically 50-60mph. And I can tell you from personal experience they're slow as fuck anyway. If you get a city or school bus up to 70-75mph you are fucking gettin it lol.
I used to do some part-time work driving shuttle buses for college games. Gillig 40 foot low floors. Had something like a 300hp Cummins and 6 speed Allison in them (more power than most school buses iirc). Post-game we'd pack like 80 people onboard to take them back to the parking lots. Which involved about a 4 city block long 5-6% grade uphill. You'd start at 25-30mph and be lucky if you were doing 10mph at the top.
Will say that having dozens of drunk football fans cheer you and your shitty bus up a slight incline is fucking hilarious though.
mrsclausemenopause@reddit
Many are slow AF while floored and trying. My old church bus was a bluebird with a GMC 6.5 diesel and it wouldn't do 65 on flat ground ever.
If you know anyone military that drove a humvee they will tell you how miserably slow they are on road and those had the exact same engine as many school busses.

Look at that video again. Either the driver would be in traffic or on the tracks. They stop before the tracks and what do you think happens next? They're in traffic
ear_cheese@reddit
A. They’re children- their brains are not fully developed, and won’t be for another 10 years.
B. Honestly, they’re fucked no matter where in the bus they are if it gets hit at that speed. But I don’t expect them to make that calculation, because of point A.
amp804@reddit
I've been on roads like that. The train track is too close to the main road. Either you're on the track or in the street. Sometimes it's hard to see left and right. I'm a trucker and have been to every state but a few. You know trees grow by the road but a lot of times they are only trimmed so cars can see. Sitting high in the driver's seat of a big vehicle you have to try to look through the leaves.
MikkiMikailah@reddit
Upon approach silence your radio, any other noise makers, turn off your stop sign, open your windows. Stop 200(?) Ft before the first track, secure your bus, open your door, look and listen for gates, signals, horns. Shift to low gear and do a second look and listen, make sure you have AT LEAST 2 BUS LENGTHS OF CLEARANCE AFTER THE TRACKS. If you don't then do not proceed! Once it is CLEAR do another look and listen, if it safe to do so proceed over the tracks, do not shift! Do not stop until you have cleared the tracks by a full bus length. Then you may proceed to turn your reds back on and your radio, and shift to a higher gear.
It's been a few years so I might have some of that wrong but that crap is burned into my brain. And now that I work in railroading (tangentially) I also know that there are plenty of people who aren't as passionate about removing grade crossings as I am, to put it nicely. Please be safe out there. The train can't stop.

I got my drivers license in North Carolina when I was sixteen. The next day I went and took a bus driving training course and got bus drivers license and drove the rest of my high school years. Looking back on that I can definitively tell you I would never even consider doing anything this dangerous even at the age of 16 which was freaking ridiculous that we could drive back then. What in the hell was this person thinking Jesus Christ on a crutch.

Ok_Internet_5058@reddit
why should they be charged with anything resulting in severe bodily harm when that didn't happen?
why don't you just tar and feather them?
deadpat03@reddit
Because a kid is in developmental stages and a life altering instances like this could and will probably effect them for the rest of their lives. Im my book that is severe bodily harm. Their are instances of children having an irrational fear of clowns and pickles to late adulthood just because of an interaction with them as a child. Now imagine a kid sitting on a bus watching a train barrel directly towards them. Imagine just 1 kid on that bus that will forever have a panic attack everytime he steps on a bus from PTSD. If that's not enough for severe bodily harm than I guess you will wait to the kid is beaten and bloody then. I expect the highest standard of care and safety from school employees. Bus drivers should be the highest scrutinized CDL job in America.

KingJRZJ@reddit
There are a lot of bad school bus drivers on the roads these days. I had a driver wait till I was right up on him and pulled out on front of me from a dead stop at a stop sign with a bus full of kids. I had to slam on my brakes so I wouldn't hit them. He just sped off while I blasted my air horn. I think some of these districts are so desperate they're just hiring anyone they can find.
teachthisdognewtrick@reddit
Combination of factors: first is pay (big surprise), the behavior of kids (many behave in a manner that most here would have received a belt on their butt or a bar of soap in the mouth for). Hours aren’t great, with an annoying gap between shifts. You get sick all the time, kids always bring you the latest bug going around.
Cargo that doesn’t talk back is so much better
KingJRZJ@reddit
I get the kids being a factor, however, in my area the pay start drivers off at 30 something an hour. The hours, to me, don't seem bad. From what I heard it was 4 on, a few hours off and then another 4. That doesn't excuse the bad driving. I don't remember any of my bus drivers putting us in danger when I was in school many years ago.
teachthisdognewtrick@reddit
Pay varies. A lot of school districts are starting to contract out the bus service, so the pay drops, benefits drop, and the private company soaks up the lions share of the revenue. If you can get a gig with a school district where you get the same benefits as the school employees it’s not a bad gig.
I stopped after kids brought me Covid, before anyone knew what it was. 5 weeks of an awful cold I thought originally.
KingJRZJ@reddit
Damn sucks, hope you're ok by now. The outside contracting would make a lot of sense. Haven't seen much of that in my area, but then again, I haven't seen much advertisement for drivers since before the holidays.
furnacemike@reddit

xnetteom@reddit
That bus makes like 1000 ft/lb of torque and weighs 30,000+ pounds. It could have pushed those cars to the next town without even breaking a sweat. A few busted bumpers beats a bus full of dead kids any day.
Hot_Falcon8471@reddit
So the article says “The bus had stopped before the tracks, and then it started to go. A car had changed into the other lane, by the looks of it … I saw the bus pull forward, but not enough,” she said”
A witness said the bus driver did in fact stop at the tracks, then as it crossed over a vehicle in front of her changed lanes and pulled in front of the bus, preventing it from being able to fully cross the tracks. So then why is the bus driver being arrested and charged? The vehicle who blocked the bus should be taking some responsibility in this.
Environmental-Pear40@reddit
Seems like a bad routing. No idea why they'd put a bus in that situation. Driver is an idiot for not waiting on the car to clear the intersection before pulling up. I know that's illegal af with hazmat I assume it's similar with a passenger endorsement. Worse, it's kids which is definitely child endangerment. That was settled in court when that bus driver in Ohio got most the kids in her bus killed doing this. Driver is definitely in jail now at least and Will probably never hold a CDL again.
AdagioEducational124@reddit

Also poorly designed crossing/intersection.
Should be considered negligence to design an intersection that demands the driver stop 40-50 feet before the stop sign and likely out of visual of the road.

ear_cheese@reddit
Profit? Have you seen the wages? They get paid a rather low hourly rate, and they work basically split shifts. It’s a retirement job at best for most districts.
braxton357@reddit
Is this satire? Not only is there less than no profit in bussing children, it is extremely hard to find anyone willing to do the job so yeah you sometimes end up with someone who shouldn't be doing the job.
Megalodon7770@reddit
Are you owner of one these shit companies? Pay the workers decent wages and you will have no issues finding right people for the right job.
xqk13@reddit
The reason no one wants to drive school buses is because you can only work 4-5 hours per day but also can’t realistically work another job. The job can also be a pain in the ass because some kids are very hard to deal with. I guess you are fine with paying more taxes to pay drivers better, but most people aren’t unfortunately
