What is the best day of the week for a “non working day”?

Posted by Tough-Decision-7435@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 187 comments

BusterMachineDixNeuf@reddit

I have Monday as my day off, because I appreciate the longer weekend and I prefer to do my 3 mandatory ‘work from office’ in consecutive days. When it comes to bank holidays, I tend to leave earlier in those days, which I quite enjoy, feels like a bit of a win getting home an hour and a bit earlier.

In a team meeting, it was mentioned that I had a service anniversary coming up. One of the younger team members said something like ‘Wow, you’ve been here longer than I’ve been alive!’.

Why do you not talk to your once bestfriend anymore?

He started drinking socially at 18, I never did. It wasn’t excessive drinking or anything like that, it just led to him finding a new social group that I wasn’t a part of. We just drifted apart after that.

What was the day like in London after the 7/7 attacks?

Posted by SunnyShineKitty88@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 78 comments

BusterMachineDixNeuf@reddit

I went to work the next day, trains were much less full than normal and it felt a bit eerie, but otherwise it was pretty normal. Home-working wasn’t really a thing for my employer back then, so we had a ‘normal’ working day with everyone in the office.

Did anyone else's family just sit and watch TV every evening from 6pm - 9pm in the 90s?

Posted by ryrypot@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 346 comments

BusterMachineDixNeuf@reddit

In the 80’s - yes, definitely. In the 90’s not so much - my brother and I were fortunate enough to have a TV and VCR in our bedroom from about 91 and a SNES not long after, so whilst my parents did do the 6-9pm watching downstairs, my brother and I were typically off playing the SNES or watching whatever video we happened to have at the time post-homework in the 90’s.

What are some differences between British culture and American culture?

Posted by Apollo-99@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 46 comments

BusterMachineDixNeuf@reddit

I have a work colleague who lived in the US for a few years and he’s mentioned before that the difference that struck him the most was that Brits are more than happy to criticise and ridicule the UK, whereas folks in the US are typically very proud to be American and couldn’t believe he would say anything negative about the country he called home. This was a few years ago so may not be the case now of course.

Where would you suggest for a UK city break?

Posted by rosscO66@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 315 comments

BusterMachineDixNeuf@reddit

Chester, York or Bath would be my recommendations. I’d probably say Chester is my favourite of the three if pushed, but I have been to a York a lot in the last 15 years so it may have lost a bit of it’s magic for me.

Do you still have a landline?

Posted by londonbluesox@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 530 comments

BusterMachineDixNeuf@reddit

Got rid of it about 3 years ago when I cancelled my Virgin Media contract and moved to a 5G internet connection - never got rid it before because my monthly VM price was actually higher without the landline for some reason. Never missed it. My parents did the same about a year ago, they’ve not missed it either.

Is it reasonable to only do part of a Stag?

Posted by PeterG92@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 31 comments

On my stag, half the party went home at 9 because they got battered the night before and were absolutely hanging. No-one who stayed on past 9 cared, you don’t want folks moaning or sitting around looking bored/miserable.

Did you enjoy Sunday Roasts as a child?

Posted by CheesyGarlicBudapest@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 342 comments

I enjoyed the mashed potato, Yorkshire pudding and gravy. I despised everything else about Sunday dinner, including the fact it was on Sunday which meant that after dinner was only rubbish on the TV like Antiques Roadshow.

Has anyone done couch to 5k?

Posted by arsenaladam92@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 206 comments

BusterMachineDixNeuf@reddit

I started last July, finished it in October. I’ve kept it up since, I now run at least one 10k and 2 5ks a week and I’ve gone from running my first 10k in a touch under 35 minutes to a running my last in a little under 26 minutes. I even completed a few 15ks earlier this year and only stopped because I was struggling to find the time around work. I’m now considerably fitter all round, running has helped me lose a great deal of weight and I generally just feel a lot better day to day. Prior to starting this I hardly did any exercise and struggled to handle a flight of stairs. Tomorrow I’m planning on sprinting up a hill 6 times before breakfast.

What is your go-to Chinese takeaway order?

Posted by Lowtoz@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 68 comments

BusterMachineDixNeuf@reddit

Egg fried rice, salt and pepper/chilli tofu, curry sauce and either mini spring rolls or mini curry triangles depending on what’s offer. The missus changes it up a bit but she usually goes for one of house special egg foo yung, chicken and tomato or beef and mushroom with a spoonful of my egg fried rice and a bbq sauce.

"Your No Licence Needed status will soon be cancelled" - what to do?

Posted by Piilaria@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 8 comments

BusterMachineDixNeuf@reddit

They would have to prove you were watching the iPlayer to make that stand up in court, which they can’t reasonably do unless ISPs are giving the BBC access to people’s internet browsing history simply on the basis that the address has no TV license. It sounds to me like they’re just trying to scare you into paying.

How much would you pay for TV subscriptions?

Crunchyroll is just anime (there might be some live-action Japanese or Korean drama stuff on there, but I couldn’t see any just now), plenty of it is subbed as well as dubbed, but if you don’t really care for anime, it’s not for you. If you want a streaming service for under £8, you can easily get NowTV’s entertainment pack less than thay price, you just need to be prepared to cancel after the introductory offers end to get offered the lower price. It works for all the packs, I have Now sports for £15 less than the advertised price too.

How many people do you buy a Christmas gift for ?

BusterMachineDixNeuf@reddit

I just buy for my child-aged nieces and nephews and my wife so currently 10 total. Agreed with all the adults years ago we wouldn't exchange presents because no-one can afford or or really knows what to get each other. Exchanging socks and deodorant/shower gel packs is pointless.

What’s a hidden gem in your Chinese takeaway order?

Posted by LewClueBlue@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 842 comments

BusterMachineDixNeuf@reddit

Vegetarian Yuk Sung (lettuce wraps). Tried them at an all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant once, instantly hooked - fresh, crisp, sweet lettuce and a savoury mix of finely diced veg, amazing. There’s a meaty version too but everyone I know who’s tried both says the veggie ones are the best. I switched allegiances to a new Chinese takeaway just so I can order them.

My wife swears the best Shepherds Pie she’s ever eaten was in a bar in Manhattan on our honeymoon. We had fish and chips in Las Vegas this year and the chips were completely different (more like french fries) but I honestly preferred them as I’m not a fan of chippy-style chips.

Married couples of the uk who earn different incomes, what do you do with your finances?

He sounds like a nice guy and it would probably make him really happy not to see you stressed out over money and able to enjoy your life together a little more. We aren’t around for that long in the grand scheme of things, and you never know what’s around the corner, so you should try and enjoy your life together as much as you can.

My wife and I have pooled all our money in a joint account since we first started living together, initially I had a low-paid job and she didn’t have one as she moved 150 miles to live with me, but over a period of about 10-15 years we were close in salary with one of the other of us earning slightly more. We’ve always paid our bills and run the house from the joint account and each had an equal small monthly ‘allowance’ that we can be frivolous with. Any big purchases are discussed. In the last 5 years I started earning a lot more than my wife and just after the pandemic we could afford for her to go part time when the opportunity arose. We still keep the same arrangements with our money, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It would be just plain weird to leave my other half struggling financially when I’ve got money just sitting in an account l doing nothing, and I wouldn’t want her to feel like I’m always treating her to stuff either, I can’t be nice living your life feeling like you need charity all the time.

It might have something to do with Peter Kay’s dislike of having his shows repeated. No idea who owns the rights to the show, but if Kay does have a veto it wouldn’t be unreasonable to suggest he’d use it.
