What is the best day of the week for a “non working day”?
Posted by Tough-Decision-7435@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 141 comments
My work allows compressed hours (I.e. 5 days squeezed into 4). I want to take advantage of this, but I hear that Mondays and Fridays are not the best days to take due to bank holidays sometimes falling on them?
Has anyone done the maths on the best day of the week to take?
lewis_t_duck@reddit
I'd do Fridays, it has 1 bank holiday and creates more long weekends with Monday bank holidays. People suggest Wednesday but I would struggle with the stop start nature of a Wednesday.
terryjuicelawson@reddit
I found Mondays just mean you tend to extend the weekend but don't really do anything as you are in a sort of Sunday mode and things are quiet. Fridays are good as you get a headstart on things, and don't feel Sunday is wasted if you have a relaxed one. Wednesday is a fun one as it breaks up the week into two short chunks. You are only ever an extra day away from time off.
LowAnimator8770@reddit
Tuesday as most bank holidays are Monday so you’d get 4 day weekends or Wednesday to break up week
CMR1891@reddit
I have Wednesdays off and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I only ever have two days of consistent work and when I’m starting to feel the slump, I have time to reset before going again
TheLordJalapeno@reddit
This 100% this
GodOfThunder888@reddit
I used to have Wednesday's off and I can confirm it is the best day.
A lot of the bank holidays are Monday, you would be robbing yourself if you'd take that day off. Friday's are generally more chill to work. Break up your work week by taking Wednesday off, and you'll never work more than 2 consecutive days.
Mundo7@reddit
you won’t be robbing yourself if you take Monday - it doesn’t work like that
GodOfThunder888@reddit
That depends on your work contract as far as I'm aware, this isn't a given.
JustAnotherFEDev@reddit
Surely having a Wednesday off means you get that "Sunday" feeling, twice per week?
On a Sunday I always think "Fuck, back to work tomorrow", I'd then think that on Tuesdays and Sundays. If I'm booking a day off, I always choose a Friday or Monday.
I see where you're coming from with the only having 2 days on the bounce, though, but for me, that'd be double dread. Saying that, every work day eve is dread, anyway. Not because I dislike my job, just I'd rather be rich enough to not need a job, because uhhh, work 😭
Scarred_fish@reddit
It's just a matter of flipping your thoughts. Instead of dread, think of Sunday as the ultimate day off.
Saturday is always busy with various, Sunday is the relaxation day, get everything done on Saturday so you have absolutely zero to worry about on Sunday. Then imagine having that feeling twice a week!
Never think about work unless you're getting paid. Any "dread" shouldn't start until your start time on Monday/Thursday.
Never get sucked into the idea you can;t control your thoughts. You control them, nobody else. You can't kick a football unless you decide to, same with thinking about something.
JustAnotherFEDev@reddit
Decent way of framing it, TBF. My problem is, if I don't think about it, I'll forget and just not turn up 😂
GodOfThunder888@reddit
I think that going back to work feeling is a lot less pressing when you know you're only going in for 2 days. I'd live on that feeling haha
CMR1891@reddit
Yeah that’s exactly it. I suffered from the Sunday dread too, but now that I have Wednesday off, it’s just a case of making it through two days on the bounce instead of five, so I feel it a lot less now!
JustAnotherFEDev@reddit
Yeah, I understand the rationale, etc. I'm sure it works for some folk and like you say, a lot less pressing when it's just for 2 days. I'm definitely in the longer weekend camp, though, but different strokes, I guess
_KeepOnRamblin@reddit
This is the exact reason I work Tue - Fri, hate getting that Sunday/Monday feeling twice a week. Plus a long weekend feels a lot better to me than a normal weekend + a not-quite-weekend.
JustAnotherFEDev@reddit
I'd rather have the longer weekend, too. A good chunk of a 2 day weekend is preparing for the week ahead, isn't it? Cleaning, tidying, washing, shopping, getting the school gear ready (for those with kids) that extra day bolted on just seems perfect. I love a bank holiday weekend for that very reason. I could do 4 days if I wanted, but that'd mean 1hr 45 extra on each of the 4 days and honestly, I'm not putting myself through that 😂
Saltypeon@reddit
I used to do Friday but switched to Wednesday. Its the perfect day off, its superb for days out as well, really quiet always get a table for lunch, shops are quiet.
Cinema on a Wednesday morning empty. Seen quite a few films this year with just two of us in there.
Having medical conditions I have quite a few appointments, I change the appointments to a Wednesday always a slot available vs firday which was a nightmare.
Secure-Presence-8341@reddit
I used to do compressed hours a take Wednesdays off to spend with my son before he started school. Some of the best days I ever had. Nice and quiet to go and do things. No more than two days consecutive work. Highly recommend Wednesdays.
Digital-Dinosaur@reddit
Wednesday here too! It feels like a mini weekend every Wednesday. I absolutely love it. Every other person takes Monday or Friday off, so if I used those days to go to Shops they would be busier.
PercySmith@reddit
I do compressed hours and have Mondays off. Bank holidays are accounted for at my workplace so you don't lose out. We get an "extra" day to book so it balances out.
Real-Box-7144@reddit
Tuesday and Friday I don’t work. I enjoy every second of being home alone too.
VinnySideways@reddit
I used to do this. I worked Mondays, had Tuesdays off, and then had Wed-Fri working again.
Tuesdays off are great because IF there is a lo no weekend you get a super long one. It also makes Mondays you do work way more bearable.
underwater-sunlight@reddit
Fridays are better than Mondays because there is only one bank holiday to consider, and it can elongate your weekend, but for better balance, Wednesday is a great day. You never really get the midweek blues
Emskidooo@reddit
Check your work policy around flexible working arrangements. I do compressed hours and have Fridays off. The bank holiday situation isn't an issue because I get a separate annual leave allocation that gives me the total hours of all bank holidays over the year. I have to book those in (with no effect on my own annual leave). This way, it doesn't actually matter if a bank holiday falls on a Friday for me.
cineephile@reddit
Very random but I get Tuesdays off , wasn’t my first choice but I have grown fond of them.
Working on Monday feels great when you know you have a Tuesday off and then working for the rest of the week is manageable as well.
I often get last min theatre tickets it’s not very crowded and trips have also been quite nice on Tuesdays.
mr_napster1@reddit
I also have Tuesdays as the NWD, completely agree I’ve grown to love it. Takes the sting out of Monday
d-diana@reddit
I have Mondays off and my company gives me the bank holidays off in lieu so it’s even better as I can choose when to take them.
Maybe check if you have a similar policy?
It’s great because I get to enjoy chill Fridays at work and still get a long weekend 😎
Realistic-Muffin-165@reddit
I've taken Fridays for the last 10 years. Only good Friday unsurprisingly lands on a Friday.
Sorry-Programmer9826@reddit
I've worked 4 day weeks for a decade (read 4 day weeks, not compressed).
I've done alternating Mondays and Fridays (so I have a 4 day weekend, then a regular weekend), Fridays, Mondays & Wednesdays.
The best one is Friday, closely followed by Monday. If your company is on it the bank holidays will be recalculated but you're right Monday gets far more bank holidays than it should (Friday gets about the right number).
Wednesdays sucked because it always felt like you were just about to go back to work (like a Sunday) making it feel less valuable. The alternating Monday and Friday made me resent the short weekends.
So in short; go with Friday and stop overthinking it. A 3 day weekend is great
mbgameshw@reddit
This is the way. Mondays off are a waste of space. Things shut and everyone pissed off
DootingDooterson@reddit
Depends on the company you work at too though. Mondays at some places are 'we're setting up for the week, there's fuck all to do' while Fridays might be 'last day, so we're slowing down for weekend shift'.
If the middle of the week is more busy, it might feel better having that Wednesday off simply because it won't feel like you're wasting a 'day off'.
adamneigeroc@reddit
I have Monday off for this reason, most people at my office don’t work Friday afternoons and the ones that are working are winding down.
Thumbb93@reddit
I've been doing the alternating Friday/Monday for a few years now and I adore them. Yes the 2 day weekends are meh but I absolutely live for the 4 dayers, they're perfect for getting away without using up any holidays or for getting a longer DIY project done
JustAnotherFEDev@reddit
I envy you. I'd love the alternate 4 dayer. I do have flexible working, so I could probably do 4 day weeks, but that'd just make each of the 4 days longer by 1 hour 45 minutes and fuck that 😂
Separate-Sector5205@reddit
I have Thursdays off, do just one day of a/l gets me 4 days off, 5 if it's a BH
Sugarlips_80@reddit
I used to do a 9 day fortnight and had a Monday off, loved it. Made the weekend longer. Saturday was for admin then still two days off. Fridays were always quiet so I could get work done without interruption. That said I am someone who like things in blocks. So a day off mid week would completely throw me off!!
InitPatch@reddit
I take Mondays off. I get the bank holiday hours to use on other days, and Fridays are generally quieter because its the most popular day to take as a non working day in my org, so it feels like I get the best of all worlds. It does mean however that Tuesday to Thursday is pretty full on.
235iguy@reddit
100% Wednesday.
KentonCoooooool@reddit
I heard of people alternate Fridays and Mondays to give themselves a 4-day weekend on occasions
Fudge_is_1337@reddit
Worth keeping in mind that with the prevalence of mixed in-office and home working, lots of places have noticeably busier traffic Tues-Thurs than they do the rest of the week.
If you're working compressed hours this is potentially less of a concern as you might be outside of core commuting times anyway, but worth considering that a Tues-Thurs commute might be longer than a Friday commute, so your overall day length could be lower if you work the Friday.
littlehamster_@reddit
I loved having Wednesday's off. It makes the rest of the week feel much more manageable as you don't start Monday morning with a long stretch of working days ahead, just two days then off again, two days then off again.
GeneralSituation8937@reddit
I do compressed hours with a Wednesday off. Only ever in work for 2 days at a time and it is glorious!
atsevoN@reddit
I have Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday off every well
BusterMachineDixNeuf@reddit
I have Monday as my day off, because I appreciate the longer weekend and I prefer to do my 3 mandatory ‘work from office’ in consecutive days.
When it comes to bank holidays, I tend to leave earlier in those days, which I quite enjoy, feels like a bit of a win getting home an hour and a bit earlier.
Siloca@reddit
I used to have Wednesdays and now I have Fridays. Fridays is good because it’s a long weekend but the bank holidays mess up your annual leave. Wednesday was good because it breaks up the week but that also meant I used to come back to work on Thursday with more work cos “oh just leave it, he’s back tomorrow”
TwoValuable@reddit
It depends on the nature of your job, and how you plan to spend your time. But I'd always pick Wednesday to have off, anything that shuts after the weekend (pubs, cafes, some independent shops) never shut on a Wednesday. My local pub doesn't open Monday, and only does food Wednesday-Sunday.
Also having just been on maternity leave I've always found Monday and Tuesdays to be old people shopping days. And from a driving point of view Monday, Thursday, and Friday tend to be quieter as I'm assuming these are the days that most people try to have off or are still work from home.
I also like the whole two days working, day off, two days working.
UniquePotato@reddit
Monday, you get that Friday feeling, and you avoid the Sunday night blues
stinkystink128@reddit
I've struggled with having Wednesdays off - often you're just in the swing of things (or others are), it's a key meeting/event day, and you start your Thursday catching up, which feels unfair. I also found there were fewer toddler classes to choose from compared to Fridays and I missed a lot of other mum friends' day off so coffee/lunch opportunities.
I agree with the positives of it - breaks up week, activities with kids aren't too busy, things are open etc. but wanted to share some reservations. I was forced to take it as my NWD by an idiot manager so that perhaps contributes to my frustration!
GetCapeFly@reddit
Mondays.
You get your bank holiday hours back to use elsewhere a you miss the Monday blues and Sunday scaries. People are busiest on Mondays so you miss the rush as well.
Standard_Bus3101@reddit
I have a Thursday off. It works well for me as I work 3 days and when I’m back in it’s a Friday. Christmas and New Year’s Eve works for me too this year as I’m not in for either now!
Prestigious_Size_977@reddit
Mondays as bank holidays get added to your leave - life changing
iamabigtree@reddit
When I used to work at home one day a week - as opposed to every day as I do now. I always chose Wednesday. Simply because then I was never in the office for more than two days in a row. So instead of a long run of working you almost have a two day working week with either 1 or 2 day weekends.
Fun-Traffic6773@reddit
I liked not working Mondays. I never had that Sunday night dread. And everyone is in a better mood on a Friday, and it tends to be a lighter day workwise in my experience.
bramleyapple1@reddit
Depends on the type of work, I like to get in Monday and get ahead of my work so I'm all sorted by Thursday.
I wouldn't want to start tuesday, have all my emails pile up and be rushing on Friday while everyone is relaxing.
samsaBEAR@reddit
On my commute it's very obvious that Friday is a WFH day for a lot of people so the commute time is slashed by a minimum of 30 minutes, I got no issues working Fridays in a ghost town of an office because of that.
Impossible_Fig_@reddit
Yeh a lot of people saying Friday, but I thought Monday would be more popular. Like you said everyone is winding down more on a Friday and tends to be in a good mood.
sampapsi@reddit
Monday I think is hands down the best choice. Gives you that free day of rest having done things and Friday is totally a more relaxed work day anyway, plus most people are going to be working the Friday to go out that night or something. Monday all the way.
SecretLecture3219@reddit
My employer gives allocation for the bank holidays so check . Otherwise you work more than some else
AncientImprovement56@reddit
If your employer sorts out bank holidays properly, then having Mondays off anyway is actually an advantage.
The total number of holiday hours you get per year shouldn't be affected by which days you work, but if you don't normally work on Mondays, you're not forced to use some of that holiday every time there's a bank holiday.
If your employer is small and/or only used to dealing with people working "standard" 5-day weeks, you may need to point them in the direction of information about pro-rating bank holidays, though.
Capt_Capital@reddit
personally think Friday is great since it creates a 3 day weekend. also re. the bank holiday thing, the only Friday thats a bank holiday is Good Friday so you're not losing much compared to the benefit of a 3 day weekend.
some people like taking Wednesdays off to break up the working week which I can understand too.
ThePodd222@reddit
Sometimes Christmas Day and New Year's Day fall on Friday (like this year), but it happens so rarely it's not worth missing out on Friday as your regular day off. Team Friday ✊
AncientImprovement56@reddit
By that logic you can't pick any day as the day off, since they move around (although the bank holidays are most likely to be on Monday, then Tuesday, because they are delayed when Christmas Day / Boxing Day / New Year's Day is at the weekend).
In any case, employers which don't have a "standard" 5-day week should have a proper system for pro-rating bank holidays to those who works different hours.
EvilTaffyapple@reddit
Fridays.
You can just move your non-working day on a week with a bank holiday, you know.
MarkCrystal@reddit
No one does any work on a Friday, this is a waste
EvilTaffyapple@reddit

Alternative_Fan908@reddit

asmiggs@reddit
The best places should give an extra day annual leave for each bank holiday, my wife basically uses it as extra week holiday. As long as you have this flexibility I would note that Fridays often entail a lot of slacking, so I'd choose Mondays.
RevStickleback@reddit
There's no 'should'. It's a legal requirement. Your annual leave total includes bank holidays, so if your your paid leave + bank holiday total is 35 and you work 4 days a week, you are allowed to choose 30 days minus any bank holidays that fall on the days you work.
gyroda@reddit
Not quite.
There is a legal requirement for 5 and 3/5 weeks annual leave, which works out at 28 days if you work 5 day weeks.
Your employer can choose to give you bank holidays off or not. That 28 days could be 8 bank holidays + 20 discretionary, or it could be 28 discretionary but you have to book bank holidays off. It could also be any 28 days the employer decides - the law doesn't care as long as you get the 28 days and your employer doesn't cancel holiday without enough notice.
Kitchen-Safe7567@reddit
Monday. no weekend dreading.
ygbjammy@reddit
Someone once told me that having a Monday off makes it feel like you're catching up for the rest of the week. Whereas Friday actually feels like it shortens your week
JJohGotcha@reddit
Since the replies are full of folks wanting to take off the busiest day … what I’ve found in an office job is you get asked more questions om Tuesdays than any other day. Others are settling in and keeping their head down on Mondays, then start firing off emails to you more on Tuesdays. I always had this feeling, and once did some stats on email volume to prove it. Taking Tuesday off is optimal for avoiding busy days.
However, I’m incentivised if I get through more work, and those Tuesday emails will still be waiting for me on Wednesday, so there’s no advantage to thinking that way.
bunnyswan@reddit
I would check if your local businesses have a particular day off, I know hairdressers offten close Mon/Tus, one of the best thing about a week day off is life admin being easier.
littleworm23@reddit
It depends how your company work your holidays out but Mondays are often mathematically the best day to maximise time off i.e. you get the hours back you would have taken on a bank holiday Monday (when you’ll be off anyway) to take when you like.
JJohGotcha@reddit
This is true of my job and probably most companies big enough to have a slick HR system.
The Bank Holidays end up giving you a bit of extra flexibility because your compensating time off is added to your holiday bank.
Zestyclose_Metal1347@reddit
I have Wednesdays off. Never work more than 2 days in a row. Game changer!
lil_tram@reddit
I think it's personal. I thought I would like Fridays best but actually Mondays were best for me. My friend has Wednesdays because he likes never working more than two days in a row.
Racing_Fox@reddit
Anything other than Sunday.
Christian’s have been ruining Sundays with their bullshit opening hours for years
Haunting-Breadfruit9@reddit
I have a fixed Tuesday off which I love. Any Monday bank holiday means a 4 day weekend and booking a long weekend is only 1 day annual leave. I hate Mondays so it’s lovely knowing I then have Tuesday off, for some reason the Wednesday to Friday stretch doesn’t feel so bad.
Upstairs_Read_1068@reddit
I have a fixed Tuesday as well and I love it.
Ok_Tree5717@reddit
I did Fridays for a while but realised this was the day with the least meetings and therefore the time I really got to catch up on the actual work so I switched to Mondays and it works well for me, no Sunday night dread and I miss a few meetings I’m not too bothered about
manazo2003@reddit
I had a weekly hospital appointment for the last year. It was Thursday, so I had Thursday off every week. I know Monday/Friday off seems the best, but getting that 3 day, Mon, Tues, weds in then Thursday off, and only Friday left to do was so nice.
I would choose Thursdays again if I ever get the chance. Although alternating Monday/Friday off would be my second choice.
Browneskiii@reddit
Friday > Monday > Wednesday > Thursday > Tuesday.
You can interchange Friday and Monday, the rest are factual.
PudWud-92_@reddit
I prefer Friday as there are fewer bank holidays then Mondays and you can take advantage if you want a long weekend away somewhere

Tuesday for me! Im pretty much the only person at my company with Tuesday off - everyone else takes off Friday so I recognise it’s a bit strange 😂 . For me the reasoning being; Bank holidays are 4 day weekends, but equally I can just book Monday off and get a 4 day stretch; I like doing meetings and admin on Monday and doing a deeper work dive Weds- Friday; I like doing home admin/ appointments/ shopping/ cleaning on the Tuesday instead of the weekend & Tuesday is also cheapest for flying in or out the country and a lot of activities around the UK!
Ill_Ad_791@reddit
A lot of people think Friday but Friday is the most relaxed day of the week. I would choose Monday
Percypocket@reddit
I have Mondays off every week and it's the best. Fridays are generally a bit quieter for me anyway, so having it off would feel a bit of a waste. Mondays are normally quite quiet in shops etc if you want to be out and about.
onlyoneatatimeplease@reddit
Wednesday is first option - never more than 2 days away from a break.
Tuesday or Friday would be second - extra long weekend whenever there's a bank holiday.
If it's flexible, switch them round. Wednesday on a standard week and Tuesday or Friday on bank holiday weekends and make the most of getting away for a city break.
SeaIntelligent4504@reddit
I like Mondays off. The bank holidays get added to your holiday allowance, so you get the bank holidays, you just get to use them when you want - way better.
thetechguyv@reddit
Definitely Wednesday.
Familiar9709@reddit
Friday or Monday for sure. You can travel places with those 3 days.
Monday has the argument that it's usually a busier day whereas Friday tends to be more quiet but there's something about taking Friday, seems to work better psychologically.
Emergency_Mistake_44@reddit
Wednesday's. Never work more than two days in a row and when it does come to taking annual leave you only have to take two days off either side to get a five day break.
Plus you constantly have the mindset of either "at least I'm off tomorrow" or "at least I've only got tomorrow left".
Monday's off just feel like a boring Sunday and Friday's off are wasted since Friday's are generally relaxed in a lot of places anyway in my experience.
gottaloveteatime@reddit
I take Monday off - I get a 3-day weekend every week, and Monday's are usually quieter when we go out and visit places.
Rich-Peak-3902@reddit
Wednesday. You're never more than two days away from a day off.
LadyInAllPower@reddit
I would say Wednesday or Thursday to break the week up and mean not too long until the weekend
spellboundsilk92@reddit
I picked Monday because I saw a lot of people who took Fridays get pressured to log on ‘just quickly’ to sign off that report or deal with this or that problem. More deadlines happen on Fridays too which increased the likelihood of that happening.
I felt that was issue was less likely to occur on a Monday.
Western-Mall5505@reddit
My friend has wednesday off and she likes how it breaks up the week.
RevStickleback@reddit
Taking Monday is absolutely the best.
Monday is the most common day for a Bank Holiday, but that doesn't mean you lose out.
If you work four days, your holiday is pro-rata, but this pro-rata also included bank holidays.
e.g. if you get 27 days annual leave + 8 bank holidays, you get a total of 35 days off. Pro-rata, that is 30 days.
The thing is though, because maybe five of those eight bank holidays will be on a Monday, you get to reclaim those days and take them when you choose, rather than having to take those particular Mondays out of your total entitlement.
M4niac81@reddit
I would pick Friday, you'll get the bonus of a 4 day weekend every time there's a bank holiday Monday.
nowiserjustolder@reddit
Company I worked at during an economic downturn put everyone on a four day week with 20% pay cut. I changed my non working day every week to suit my needs, they were not happy but they never stipulated it had to be the same day each week.
Responsible_Club_638@reddit
If you dont woro a bank holiday because its your non working day then you are entitled to take it back on another day. If you're working 0.8 fte then you're entitled to 0.8 of the total number of bank holidays in a year, you just take then on another day of yoir choosing any employer not doing this is breaking the law
speculativeinnature@reddit
I don’t work Fridays now and it’s great. Basically a bank holiday every weekend. If I couldn’t do Fridays, then I’d do Mondays.

TheWeirdDude-247@reddit
Don't let handful of public holidays determine your year.
I currently work Mon-Thur 10 hours a day and if im booking holidays iv got room for manoeuvre.
Thursday midday we all gassed as work ends soon, I try my best to get all chores done by Thursday evening, so me and partner can enjoy our life.
Taking wed off imo is pointless as whole idea is to maximise your off days, which are Fri or Mon, for holidays I take off 4 days iv got 7 free.
You have 4 day week option, choose Monday or Friday imo.
Difficult_Narwhal_72@reddit
I dont know why... But its Wednesdays for me!
ComeHereUk@reddit
No more than two days running in the office
Dazz316@reddit
3 is a day off and does split the week off.
But turning a 2 day weekend into a 3 dayer gives you options to go places, make more of a saturday. You can rest Friday, make saturday awesome being revitalised from teh day before and back at it again sunday. Or you can go somewhere, travel in the morning without having to slog it after work, still have a lot of the day, have all of Saturday, and travel back Sunday. Makes a massive difference.
Ok-Woodpecker4059@reddit
Omg I also have Wednesdays off! I love it. Only ever in work for 2 days, so it always feels like a Thursday or a Friday! Lots of things are cheap Tuesday evening - I sometimes get the Eurostar to Paris on a Tuesday and come back Wednesday for about £75! (I have a good friend in Paris!) Also at my work there are quite a few meetings Wednesdays and I get to miss them as it’s not my working day lololol
summerloco@reddit
That sounds amazing, so I guess tonight is a mini Friday for you? Do you get a mini Sunday dread on Wednesday evenings?!
armitage_shank@reddit
I think it depends a bit; I do project work and it takes a day or two to get going again after the weekend - taking Wednesday off would reset me, whereas now it’s the day i probably get most done.
I had a four day work week and took Fridays off, and it was great - people are happier on Friday, they want to go out and being nicely rested means you can enjoy it more.
Adventurous_Jump8897@reddit
Depends why you need it, and how you wanna play it, plus what your work is like.
At my place I’d go for a Friday because it’s a pretty slack day - so I wouldn’t be coming back to a bunch of work.
I’ve known people who literally just needed a break for health reasons choose Wednesday to break up the work week.

I did compressed hours and took Thursday off. I really liked it as I felt like I had two Fridays. The real Friday was usually quite quiet as well. I'd often swap my Thursday with Friday if I wanted a long weekend.
Strange_Head6219@reddit
I did this a few years back and took Fridays off. Felt great until a bank holiday Friday came and I basically lost a day I was already not working. Mondays have the same problem with bank holidays. Wednesday off sounds boring but mathematically it's the safest , bank holidays almost never fall midweek so you're never losing a compressed day to a holiday you'd have gotten anyway. Plus midweek breaks actually feel more refreshing than a long weekend, you never fully switch off over a 3 day weekend but a Wednesday off genuinely resets you.
GrumpChorlton@reddit
I work Tuesday to Friday, so my weekend is Saturday to Monday. It works for me. I get a proper 3 day weekend, can always get Moday appointments, and because I don’t work Mondays I’m still legally entitled to bank holidays, so I get an added week paid holiday. Not saying it’s the best but been doing it for a while now and can’t imagine doing anything else.

Equal_Membership_923@reddit
I understand the maths will show that a day other than a Monday or Friday off is best but when you factor in that you’ll have long weekends forever or as long as you work there then maybe the loss of some holiday is worth it. Just my thoughts. A single day off does tie you to home whereas three days off really gives you a chance to relax and go away.

I used to work Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. As most bank holidays are Monday and Friday I was given the bank holiday time again to use during my working days. Good times.

I had Wednesday off as it felt like two Fridays in the week.

An old colleague specifically had Wednesday as her NWD so that she'd never work more than two days in a row.
That's what I'd do.

I have Wednesday off, I use it to clean, wash, shop. Plus if I wanted to do something fun it’s less busy than a weekend. And if there’s a bank holiday I only have to book a Tuesday off work to get a really long weekend haha

Wednesdays without a doubt, because it breaks your week up. Otherwise I’d go for Tuesday to make starting the week less daunting (“Ugh Monday. Ah well I have tomorrow off”).

I have given up working on Tuesdays when I can avoid it. The traffic on the A1 and M1 is just ridiculous lately, it's worse than a Monday.

It’s definitely quieter on Wednesday to get stuff done but honestly I’d prefer the 3 consecutive days. But depends how your brain recognises it to be honest. When I sit down mid week knowing I have to go back to work, in 24 hours I don’t fully disconnect. However when Friday EOD hits me, I’m able to forget everything work related

Wednesday. You still get the Monday bank holidays off (paid as normal working hours) and could then get the Tuesday as AL, giving you a 2 day week left.
