What’s the one job around the house you hate doing?
Posted by borogowja@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 522 comments
For me (and sadly also my Mrs) it’s putting washing on the airer.
Put laundry in the basket? Sure. Put the contents of said basket into the machine? No problem. Take laundry out of the machine? Sometimes. Put washing on the airer? Not unless there’s significant inducements!
For context we don’t own a tumble dryer, so that’s out and we frequently end up rewashing loads of laundry and having excess built up. We both loathe it!
What domestic task gets your goat?
Purple_Pizza_4287@reddit
Floors- I hate, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping. I don’t like any of the floor cleaning activities.
NightStinks@reddit
Maybe a robot vacuum would be a good investment for you. We have a dog so I got one that vacs and mops the floor daily, and it’s game changing.
Purple_Pizza_4287@reddit
We have a robot vacuum but not one that mops as well. What brand/model do you have?
NightStinks@reddit
I have a Xiaomi X20+.
The mops press down and rotate as it cleans - they self clean and ‘rewet’ with fresh clean water every time it’s used. I just have the fill the water tank up from the tap every week or two.
They also lift up when it gets to carpet to avoid making it damp.
Conor2704@reddit
Ironing. I wear a shirt and tie at work so need to iron 5 shirts and 1 pair of trousers a week. Absolutely hate it. My saint of a wife will often do it for me if I'm busy doing other jobs because she knows how much it annoys me. Any other job I would do 3 or 4 times before ironing once.
cactusdan94@reddit
Cant you just wear the same one all week?
Conor2704@reddit
If I wanted to stink yes. I run hot in general, and would only ever wear a shirt or t-shirt for one day before washing it.
cactusdan94@reddit
Who cares if you stink
Conor2704@reddit
Well, firstly, I do. I'd imagine my wife does. And, considering I'm a teacher, I think I'd be making my own life an absolute misery because teenagers will definitely not be kind about it if I did.
cactusdan94@reddit
Isnt a bad smell subjective though?
Whats bad to one person, may be nice smelling to another?
Conor2704@reddit
Arguably yes, but I don't think there's many people who like the smell of sweat on another person, particularly stale sweat after a couple of days. Regardless of whether there is or not, I'm not willing to wear the same shirt for a week. Personal preference
Rich6-0-6@reddit
I used to have to do this, and my life was changed when I realised that I sat at a desk with members of the public in front of me all day, but not behind me. I slashed the time it took by only ironing the front of my shirts.
malcolmmonkey@reddit
I spent most of my career wearing three piece suits. The only part of the shirt that got ironed was the three inch strip of white each side of the tie.
Rh-27@reddit
What about the arms, should one remove their blazer?
malcolmmonkey@reddit
Never took it off : )
Elongulation420@reddit
“and not wearing trousers”
Rich6-0-6@reddit
I was specifically told in my exit interview that you wouldn't mention that if I left quietly 😡
NaturalSuccessful521@reddit
I actually love ironing a shirt, but never wear them. I used to do my wife's when she wore one for work and when I shared houses when I was in my 20s, I used to iron my housemates shirts in exchange for a packed lunch.
Ever tried hanging and steaming? Might be for you
frankchester@reddit
If you have the means, just take them for a wash and dry at the dry cleaner. It’s less expensive than you think.
Pedanticandiknowit@reddit
My dude get some non-iron shirts!
No-Body-4446@reddit
They’re never actually non iron, they’re less iron admittedly but they still need it imo.
I don’t mind ironing tho. I like a nice crisp shirt and collar.
wayneio@reddit
In 2020 I bought 6 identical white charles tyrwhitt non-iron shirts for every day at the office (makes deciding what to wear much easier). I have yet to iron a single one and they are pefectly crease-free. The only trick is when you get them out the washing machine, put them straight on a hanger and give them a good shake before hanging them to dry.
Pedanticandiknowit@reddit
I've always found that they look like they need an iron, but once you wear it on the commute in, all the creases are gone
Vegetable_Orchid_492@reddit
I may have some synapses missing, but I like ironing. It's warm and dry, there's a nice end result and I can listen to the radio while I'm doing it.
And smooth clothes detract from my crinkled face.
DramaticStability@reddit
I used to hate ironing, but I know see it as an opportunity for some "me time", catch up on a TV show, maybe a tipple on the side with a sip as a reward per item.
Conor2704@reddit
Your last sentence had me creased laughing
RddWdd@reddit
Thankfully, I can't remember the last time I ironed anything. I guess I'm in the right line of work for me.
The other day my mum told me that my grandmother used to iron everything, including everyone's underwear. Mind-blowing.
AmorphousBlob-0001@reddit
Yeah I haven't touched the iron since covid it's been bliss
Although remembering the feel of a fresh ironed shirt now that it's getting colder maybe I'll whip it out this winter
psycoMD@reddit
Get a steamer, it’s so much better than iron.
discombobulatededed@reddit
This is why I’m enjoying winter right now. I don’t even iron my shirt, just put a jumper on over it haha
Dry-Contribution4562@reddit
Every stylist I've met (through work) has sworn by a steamer instead of an iron after using one for work. It always looked so quick and effortless!
GratisLM@reddit
Thankfully my partner doesn't mind ironing at all, and she hates cooking whereas I quite enjoy it, so it all works out.
Nonbinary_Cryptid@reddit
I only found out my spouse could iron after about 18 years of marriage. I knew they couldn't do it, or so they told me, so I did. All the school uniforms, my work clothes and theirs. Then I sprained my wrist one time and got really frustrated because I couldn't get the shirts right with my left hand. They came to take over and I felt robbed of all of those hours I spent ironing. Turns out they just hated it more than I did. The kids are grown now and we just iron our own stuff, when we need it.
Aggressive_Poet_7059@reddit
Cleaning the oven 😌
BCF13@reddit
Putting the duvet cover on, fucking hate it.
Vegetable_Orchid_492@reddit
I want someone to invent a duvet which opens on two sides. Along the bottom and one of the sides. Buttons or - even better a zip. I would pay good money for that.
G-ACO-Doge-MC@reddit
A sleeping bag?
Vegetable_Orchid_492@reddit
I meant the duvet cover. Although a sleeping bag sounds like a good idea.
G-ACO-Doge-MC@reddit
You could sew this in yourself pretty easily. It’s got to be one of the most basic things to implement, a basic stitch of a zipper. Or get a tailor to do it.
upturned-bonce@reddit
Revolutionary tip: buy a duvet cover, and then pay a sewing person to put an extra zip into it. Zips are sold by the metre in the right places.
efitchuk@reddit
Amazon sell duvet covers with a zip on the fourth side!
CouchKakapo@reddit
Found this it's 3-side opening. Either way, I got excited to know it's a real thing!
Vegetable_Orchid_492@reddit
Thank you - nice and plain too.
PaPaJ0tc@reddit
You just have invented one. Now all you need is a person who can unpick stitching from one side, and fit a zip (probably too long to buy cheaply) or sew buttons/button holes.
Then patent it and take the idea to manufacturers.
Calm_Wonder_4830@reddit
Turn the cover inside out, put your arms in, grab the corners, pick up the duvet, and shake! Absolutely saved my life when working in hotels and then care work.
Bret_Riverboat@reddit
I hate it as well, but wifey taught me to turn the duvet inside out, put my hands in the corners, grab the duvet by the corners still holding the duvet, flip and shake. Then it’s just the buttons….
batgirlsmum@reddit
Which is fine, but when it’s bigger than me on two dimensions and almost as thick in the third it takes one hell of an effort and standing on the bed to do it.
happylurker233@reddit
I'm short in stature, and I do this method over the bannister, in case you have stairs.
NuclearMaterial@reddit
Bannister method is my go-to.
Fyonella@reddit
I have long said that putting a cover on a King Size Duvet should be an Olympic Sport, restricted only to people 5ft 1” and under.
HumourNoire@reddit
This is the 1.2x duvet heat, where the duvets are 1.2 times the height of the athlete. The UK's Fyonella will be hoping not to spend an embarrassing amount of time trying to find the corners in the opening seconds here. And they're off!
Fyonella@reddit
Love this! 😂
feetflatontheground@reddit
You can use the roll method.
I can't explain it, so Google it.
MadamKitsune@reddit
Clothes pegs. Turn the cover inside out, put your hands in the corners and then grab the corners of the duvet before shaking the top of the cover into place. Straighten the top and use pegs to fix everything in place so it doesn't slip and twist while doing the next part of wrestling the rest of the cover down and then (important!) take the pegs off before giving the whole lot a shake.
Appropriate-Bad-9379@reddit
I’m 5’6” and have a super king size duvet. Think it would be easier to wrestle alligators…
UnusualSomewhere84@reddit
Your technique sounds awful!
fengshuifountain@reddit
Yes! That's my problem too!!
hippodribble@reddit
I do that and the opposite: grab two corners and walk them up the inside of the cover. Then grab the corners from the outside and shake.
I find it slightly easier.
efitchuk@reddit
My partner does this, and inevitably will end up playing the role of “creepy ghost” as I pass him the duvet 🤦🏼♀️👻🤣
Weird1Intrepid@reddit
I think you meant to say turn the cover inside out
Turning the duvet inside out would release a lot of feathers or fluff into the room lol
Bret_Riverboat@reddit
Er, yep lol
dit_dit_dit@reddit
Followed instructions, fluff everywhere and duvet cover still on floor
Commontreacle1987@reddit
Yep it’s the only way to do it and it’s quick!
Fit_Cicada7954@reddit
That's how I do it. My mum taught me this. Genuinely thought that's the standard way 😅
newfor2023@reddit
Well it's that or lie it on the bed and crawl inside.
anotherangryperson@reddit
Oh the buttons!! I bought an Ikea cover and when I opened it, it had a zip. Wonderful. I use bulldog clips to hold the corners in place while I shake the duvet out but absolutely dread every part of changing the duvet cover apart from the zip one.
Select_Scarcity2132@reddit
Exactly the way to do it, buttons no problem great but plastic popper things! The bain of my life 😫
ascovit@reddit
It is said moving house is the number 1 reason for divorce. I'd demote that to number 2 and bump up duvet cover swaps to 1.
alltheparentssuck@reddit
Putting up a caravan awning in up there with that too.
Hetty-Hedgerow@reddit
Very little is more soul destroying than going to bed late and tired and realising you changed the sheets eary but didn't put the duvet cover on.
Bombadombaway@reddit
You might like a coverless duvet!
I bought one a month ago from the Fine Bedding company. Game. Changer.
Entirely machine washable and tumble dryable, I never have to put on another duvet cover again.
loveswimmingpools@reddit
Wow! I've just ordered one of these. Thanks 😊
Bombadombaway@reddit
Haha, you’re welcome - I should be getting commission from them based on this thread! Hope you enjoy all your newfound time not stuffing duvets into covers 😄
wayneio@reddit
this must really fill up the washing machine. You'd need a big one just to fit the duvet in alone
Bombadombaway@reddit
Yeah you definitely can’t wash both your sheets and your duvet at the same time. If you’re ordering a Double or King Size 10.5 tog then you need a big washing machine. However for any other sizes/lower togs they should fit in a standard 7.5 litre washing machine
Adamrideordie21@reddit
Just checked out the fine bedding company and got a set, you sir/ma’am have just made my life so much easier!
LauraMJJ88@reddit
I have a question - if I had one of these I’d need a king size duvet, how easily do they fit in a washing machine? They look quite thick on the website. Thanks 😊
Bombadombaway@reddit
I have a 10.5 tog king size and it just about fits - the duvet is very very light and compresses easily. You will need to own a larger size washing machine ( I think 9.5 or 10kg one) but it should say more on that in the product specification.
LauraMJJ88@reddit
Thank you so much for replying!
DiligentCockroach700@reddit
My mum used to call this an eiderdown.
Lowlands62@reddit
An eiderdown goes over an under sheet I think? So no faffing with duvet covers but some faffing with extra sheets. Personally I'd take the occasional duvet change over the nightly frustration of a twisted under sheet (I'm a wriggler), but each to their own!
discombobulatededed@reddit
Mind blown. How have I lived this long, loathing this job and not known these were a thing. I’m going to order one immediately!
alex8339@reddit
Sorry I like my goose down too much
Roxy_Boxer@reddit
Never knew they existed. Think you may have changed my life. Doggo sleeps on the bed so this really is a game changer. If I could give you an award I would.
ohnobobbins@reddit
IKEA do one as well. I love mine as it has a cool side - it somehow manages to be both warm and cool at the same time.
RivenUK@reddit
I gave him an award on your behalf! Love it when people help each other!!
Bombadombaway@reddit
You’re very welcome!
ScorpionKing111@reddit
Wow is there such a thing? Going to save this so I don’t forget to check them out. Thanks!
BusterMachineDixNeuf@reddit
They’re fantastic. I got a Silent Night one the last time Amazon did a sale and I’m hoping I can pick up a few more in the Black Friday sales.
Fenpunx@reddit
I don't mind doing it if I'm just left to do it but what pisses me off is when I get in from work, saying hello and goodnight to my kids and the missus tells me she stripped all three beds, they should be dry now, and that I need to make them before the kids go to bed.
Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrgggghhhhh..
negligiblespecies@reddit
I don't use duvets anymore, I have a bedspread instead. I doubt I'll ever go back to a duvet now, to be honest.
Albert_Herring@reddit
If you have the space to do it (basically, can get all round the bed on three sides): lay the duvet cover flat on the bed inside out, lay the duvet on top of it, then roll both up into a sausage starting at the closed end of the cover. When you have finished you just need to tweak the exposed ends of the cover on each side in the right way (which is easier to Google a video of than describe) and the whole thing will unroll with the duvet inside the cover. It looks like magic.
Capital_Reporter_412@reddit
I saw this called the burrito method. I often do it this way just because it's more interesting than the usual method. Also I can remove the duvet cover inside out and just keep it inside out in preparation for putting it back on.
Capital_Reporter_412@reddit
It does look like magic and I still can't quite get my head around it despite doing it for over a year!
Upper-Sail-4253@reddit
So, you people wash your duvet covers rather than put a top sheet between you and your duvet…. We grew up with the following standard bedding— bottom sheet, top sheet, blanket, duvet/comforter/bedspread/quilt on top, pillow w/pillow case. We change the sheets and pillow case once a week, although I’m lazy and only do it once every two weeks now, in my dotage! (65). Sounds like the duvet cover is s MAJOR HASSLE!
Badlydressedgirl@reddit
It’s the fitted sheet for me. I’ve got a king size bed in the corner of the room.
Indomie_At_3AM@reddit
The duvet cover is fine but the mattress liner can go fuck itself. Especially l if your bed is in a corner, that corner is the worst
fergie_89@reddit
I can do a whole change in 2 minutes. My husband? Last time he tried I actually watched him climb inside the duvet cover to put the duvet into the corners 🤣🤣
rustynoodle3891@reddit
Oh yeah I can definitely identify with that. I accidentally bought one with buttons instead of poppers. My hands aren't great and shake a fair bit especially when I'm doing fiddly things. Plus I have carpal tunnel affecting my left hand at the moment. Took me a good 20 minutes to get it on last time!
MesoamericanMorrigan@reddit
The top sheet on the mattress…
Physical-Bear2156@reddit
Oh yes, so much!
I'm allegic to house dust too, so end the whole exercise sweating, with streaming eyes and nose. I always look forward to it with root canal anticipation.
UnusualSomewhere84@reddit
How dusty is your bed?
stevoknevo70@reddit
You wouldn't believe how dusty your bed is, honestly - except it's not really dust, it's dust mites, their droppings, and your skin cells - I've got a mattress vacuum doofer with built-in UV light to kill the wee bastards, it's disgusting what it pulls out of the mattress and I change my bedding regularly/have a mattress protector.
Physical-Bear2156@reddit
It's the rest of the room, especially the floorboards under it, that causes the problem. I leave the house and go and sit in the garden when the other half vacuumes. Then she leaves the doors and windows open for a while.
vectorology@reddit
Start using a top sheet and you won’t have to wash your duvet cover nearly as often. I don’t understand why they aren’t more popular.
TotallyTapping@reddit
Yes! We always have a top sheet and it halves the number of times I need to change the duvet cover.
krux25@reddit
I'm the same. It doesn't help that I'm small and we have a king size duvet. It's always a massive undertaking and my partner refuses to help, even though he's the taller one.

littlebutters1@reddit
My partner insisted on a superking size bed and also has 7 pillows just on his side so changing the bed is like an Olympic sport
Jassida@reddit
Same. Every time I swear it will take me less time but it never does. Plus we are soon in double quilt territory which is next level.
Alarming_League_2035@reddit

BlakeC16@reddit
Yep. I'll happily do the washing up, I don't mind putting away the laundry or most other chores but putting the duvet cover on sends me into an absolute spiral of despair and frustration.
Kupo-Moogle@reddit
I'll wash up. Do the laundry. Do he ironing. Hoover. Repaint a room.
Fuck making a bed. Hate it.
InviteAromatic6124@reddit

Cleaning the ceramic hob, microwave and fridge. There are just so many nooks and crannies and I have to crouch down for the fridge and keep doing several trips back and forth to the sink to rinse the cloth. Getting stubborn poop off the toilet is also a pain as is cleaning the draining board and underneath. Never anywhere to put it without dripping all over the work surface.
Moogle-Mail@reddit
There is something really wrong with your toilet if that is a problem.
Bforbrilliantt@reddit
Nope just didn't do it often enough so it dried. Toilet cleaner does loosen stuff but the odd bit was requiring repeated motion of the brush.

Living-Excuse1370@reddit

AmberWarning89@reddit
I’ve taken to just keeping everything in laundry hampers. It’s so much easier for my AuDHD brain.
Chicklecat13@reddit
I’m getting to the same point. I found this amazing hamper from the range that says “not quite clean, not quite dirty” and that really helps me when it comes to clothes I’ve worn once like jeans or a hoodie that aren’t stanky so don’t need to be washed but aren’t so clean that I’d want them touching my clean clean stuff. That hamper has improved my life and prevents a floordrobe situation.
belfast-woman-31@reddit
I have 3 clean washing hampers just chilling. Worst is I have a lot of clothes but they never get worn as I just pull the same old stuff out of the hampers 😂
bobble173@reddit
I've just sat and put about half the clothes in my wardrobe away because I have been letting it pile up 😂 my toxic trait
Kodys_angel@reddit
I pretty much live off of the semi-folded clothes on my dining room table that I still haven’t put away, that are there because I had to put the other lot of clothes on the airer.
Rinse and repeat. Occasionally take something different out of the wardrobe, if I’m feeling fancy
Mischeese@reddit
Dry clothes tend to end up on our dining room table because I cannot be arsed to take them upstairs for the whole family. They got their clothes done for them, they can come find them.
floss147@reddit
Sorting and folding clothes is a pain, tbh the whole process sucks. I bring the washing down, sort it in to washing piles, wash, sort into what goes in the dryer and what doesn’t, then sort in to which clothes are whose, fold and put away.
Doing it for 2 adults, a teen and 2 littles is so time consuming and dull. I hate it.
panic_puppet11@reddit
A lot of the time the main impetus for me to get it off of the airer and put away is that the following week's laundry has just come out of the machine and needs to go on the rack to dry!
boobiemilo@reddit
This. I can and will do everything else in the house without complaint I even fold the laundry nicely and place it on the side in piles, sorted by room and person. The thought of taking it up stairs and putting it away makes me SEETHE.
MadWifeUK@reddit
Same here! There's only two of us, our clothes live in the same room. We have separate baskets for lights, darks, colours and towels and jeans. I lift a basket when it's full enough for a wash, bring it downstairs and put it through the machine. The machine beeps to let me know it's finished, so I'll either hang the washing out (if it's dry) or transfer it to the tumbly (which happens much more often). When it's dry I put it back in the basket, bring it into the living room and put the telly on while I fold it and put it back into the basket layered in categories (eg my dresses, his t-shirts, jamas, underwear) and put the basket by the stairs to take back up with me the next time I go upstairs. That's usually bed time, so I carry the basket up to the bedroom... and there it sits looking at me accusingly for 7 to 10 business days.
combustioncactus@reddit

tinyarmyoverlord@reddit
Are you me? I’ve got clean laundry both in my kitchen and on my bed. Folded. Just chilling. And when I did the dishes the cutlery definitely got left in the sink to deal with later.
pinknoise_@reddit
I have clothes chilling from a trip in September 😂. Cutlery lives in the drying rack. Glad I'm not alone.
Organic_Reporter@reddit
Putting the clothes away, definitely. No problem with washing it and drying it, but once it's clean I'm done. I don't even have to put the other 4 people's away, just into piles and dumped outside their rooms, but sorting it and folding it? Arrghhh I usually have at least 2 baskets of clean laundry in my bedroom waiting to be put away. Plus an overflow of socks that lost their pairs but they definitely exist so I can't throw them away.
The cutlery issue was solved by a dishwasher, which I'm eternally grateful for. Especially because one of the kids usually unloads it and that is another job I don't like.
Living-Excuse1370@reddit
I also hate hanging out washing! I don't know why. I didn't expect the hate for the task to be so strong!
gerbilshoe@reddit
Fucking cat litter tray. always a chore.
Acceptable-Art-9649@reddit
I got an automatic litter tray to stop this but honestly it's no easier. It does get rid of the requirement to scoop every day and stops cats from standing in their own shite and spreading it around the floor if they go again before you managed to scoop, but it gets so filthy on the inside of the drum that it needs a pretty deep scrub every few weeks anyway which kind of negates things.
And one cat decided he doesn't like it and would rather go on the sofa so now we have a regular tray as well.
Puzzleheaded-Step222@reddit
I came to say the same thing I fucking hate doing it
gerbilshoe@reddit
The big cloud of poisonous ammonia steam when you pour boiling water on it. or just the stench when you scrape it out. I mean i love the cat.. but man.

West_Yorkshire@reddit
You need better litter. Sanicat clumping litter is S tier cat litter and will save you from this, for the most part, as long as you regularly clear the clumps.
bobble173@reddit
My parents tried loads of cheaper alternatives, but in the end, catsan was just better. When I moved out and got two cats, I also tried to find a cheaper alternative, but have resigned myself to buying catsan 😂
West_Yorkshire@reddit
Sanicat from zooplus is £17 for 2 10l bags.
Zooplus is the cheapest place for pet stuff that I have found, and I've looked all over.
martanimate@reddit
I've used Cat's Best - the clumping litter. It's a game changer that you also get from Zooplus. The clumps don't smell, which I'm aware helps a lot and it's definitely not cheap, but it is worth it.
West_Yorkshire@reddit
40L for 27.99 is pretty good!

angrystarfish35@reddit
I previously used catsan, I've recently changed to breeder celect paper litter, absolute game changer. Catsan was way too messy and dusty. The paper stuff is much better. I can hoover it all up and it look so tidy. And less than 20 minutes later, one of the dickheads has decided they needed to flick a ton out and it looks a mess again.
MrDeanings@reddit
You should check out those sifting trays and the wooden pellet litter.
The litter trays are a bit pricey and can be hard to find in the UK. PeeWee brand is the only one I could easily find.
The litter is £11 for 30L (15kg ish) in pets at home and I've seen it in plenty of other places . Lasts ages because you mainly only need to top it up.
frankchester@reddit
If your cats are fairly mobile, get a top-entry!
I used to be a cat sitter so I’ve seen just about every iteration of tray and litter. A top entry Iris Ohyama litter tray and you’ll never have to pick litter off the bottom of your feet again. It all gets caught on the lid because it has grooves and when you scoop the tray you just shake the lid back into the tray.
staminaplusone@reddit
Seconds* they hear me clean the tray and think "ooo I could go!"

ebonycurtains@reddit
We started out using liners and our cats scratched big holes in them almost immediately which made both scooping and cleaning the box way more difficult.
plertskirt@reddit
I've been using a puppy pad underneath the litter instead. Amazon has some large ones, fold it over whack it in, litter on top it absorbs any disgustingness and is piss easy clean up.

Putting washing away. I’ve never agreed with ironing everything after the way my husband rifles through clothes in the drawer, so iron when I need something but its the putting away grinds my gears and we end up just getting clothes out the basket as it becomes a permanent fixture in the corner

Anything to do with washing too.
I let my washing baskets fill up.But at the same time I’ve always got 1 million things to fold.Always need to rewash clothes because I wash them then forget about them… things are left on the airer & radiator for days to dry
I also have OCD and “contamination” of random things is a real issue to me, I can’t mix and match things that don’t go in the same category my brain has made up.
It’s absolute chaos as you can imagine. I have one clean tea towel left and the rest have went to die in the dirty washing pile or in the clean washing pile
Who knows at this point
Izwe@reddit
I do the washing 3 times a week and it just takes SO MUCH TIME! Sorting, washing, waiting, emptying, pairing socks, putting on airers, waiting, checking, more waiting, folding, sorting, putting away ... urgh, I'm getting annoyed just thinking about it.

And there's just so much of it to do. Every surface in every room
gyroda@reddit
Yes! And you can't just clean the surfaces if there's any photos or decorations or anything on there, it all needs to be dusted, moved and then replaced.
And it just comes out of nowhere. The floor is walked on, I get that. The kitchen surfaces get food on them. The shower gets limescaley because of the water you use. But dust? Nope, fuck you, it's here no matter what you do.

Late-Champion8678@reddit
Ironing. I no longer buy clothes that require ironing.
I also dislike putting laundry on the airer. Bought a washer-dryer and I’m still too lazy to remove the washed dried clothes for a couple of days, but I don’t have rewatch them because of the mildew smell at least.
mrspillins@reddit
Cleaning the bathroom. It’s tiny, and gets covered in wet dust really quickly. It just feels gross to do. That and the cat litter.
Capital_Reporter_412@reddit
Wiping the wet bathroom dust round and round each surface is one of my worst jobs. It takes so many cloths to actually remove the stuff. I make an effort with it during my daughter's baths as I'm so bored sitting there, (plus she usually makes me a nice cup of bathwater tea afterwards) but it never looks fully clean.
Nonbinary_Cryptid@reddit
Cleaning the kitchen sink plughole when the kids put plates in with food still on. That and pulling their hair out of the bath plug. They both have waist length hair, and it's like hauling out a wet and slimy rope!
Capital_Reporter_412@reddit
See this is one job I actually find grotesquely fascinating! Especially if the water isn't draining and my efforts are rewarded with a satisfying gurgle as the blockage is cleared.
TarrierMoney@reddit
I’m fine with putting on washing and hanging it to dry, it’s the putting it away afterwards that feels like an absolute chore! I probably have around 3 piles of clean clothes currently scattered around my house.
Capital_Reporter_412@reddit
I solved this by buying more laundry baskets. They regularly get together to make up the foundation tower of "laundry mountain".
Positive_Fix6610@reddit

gyroda@reddit
Dusting is the one for me. It just gets dirty, by itself. Wtf.
I can clean any mess I've made. I can clean the shower, I can wash up, I can do the laundry and I don't have an issue sweeping the floor, but I resent dusting. Gotta move everything, clean every knick-knack one by one, then clean the surface, then put it all back. For every shelf, side and surface, every week, forever.
frankchester@reddit
I love dusting! It’s so satisfying because it leaves all those little rings everywhere where you have stuff. I love clearing down a shelf and dusting.

JimmiCottam@reddit
I don't find washing up to be a problem - podcast on, listen to some tunes, crack on.
It's the cutlery that's the worst. There's always a billion forks, a billion teaspoons, they take just as long to wash as everything else, they don't take as much real-estate on the counter beside the sink but also don't take as much real-estate on the drainer so it doesn't look like actual progress and it makes the water more manky than everything else before it.
Contemplating just getting a load of chip-shop forks and being done with it
mrwithers@reddit
Before getting a tabletop dishwasher, I used an old protein shaker bottle with it's own dishwater to put all of the cutlery. Plates etc would go in bowl, cutlery in shaker.
aprendo23@reddit
Might sound counterintuitive, but considering getting rid of some of your forks/teaspoons.
If you use a fork 20 times a day, you're gonna be washing 20 on a night before bed. If you only have 10 forks, you might be more mindful about using them, and also, giving a fork a quick wash when you need one takes ~30 seconds, and will possibly seem quicker than washing loads in one go? Idk, it works for me.
Also consider a teaspoon rest/holder for making cups of tea. We use 1 teaspoon per day for hot drinks now, rather than 1 spoon per cup/round.
JimmiCottam@reddit
You're talking to a man who uses the same teaspoon to eat his cereal as he does to make his tea with because "it saves time"
No. No it doesn't. Because the spoons fecking multiply, I'm telling you

hipposaregood@reddit
Screw the duvet cover, but nothing is worse than the bed sheets, the little pinging elastic shits. You think you've got a grip of it and you've got the situation under control and then you look back and one of them has pinged off and you grab it and you force it down and now the other three are up to business. So you maul them into submission and they're on and it's OVER and then you get into bed that night and disrupt the equilibrium and they're at it again?

Washing the pots. It’s so Sisyphean and soul destroying. Yep these are the same plates and pans I washed yesterday and tomorrow I’ll have to wash the bastards again. Luckily my other half feels that way about the washing and I don’t mind it, so generally he washes the pots and I wash the clothes.
Appletwirls@reddit
Dusting and washing walls both are the bane of my existence
Moogle-Mail@reddit
I don't know anyone who does that!
kittycatt99@reddit
Emptying the dishwasher. Filling it? Absolutely fine. I just hate emptying it of clean dishes. Especially when a pan handle or mug collects a little bit of warm cloudy dishwasher water that spills onto your hand or your leg or your sock when you’re trying to put the item away.
Moogle-Mail@reddit
I'm the opposite - I hate loading the dishwasher but have no problem emptying it. I also have a tea-towel in hand for the obvious things that haven't fully dried.
Silent-Promotion-208@reddit
Cleaning the oven…arrggghhhhhhh
Moogle-Mail@reddit
I'm 58 years old and I've never cleaned an oven in my life. They really don't need cleaning. I've had my current oven for around 15 years and the bad stuff just burns off while pre-heating. The racks have possibly needed cleaning a couple of times but there are some really good cleaning solutions where you just buy some horrible chemicals and some bags and put the racks in the bags with the chemicals. I'm also now starting to think that is unnecessary.
plertskirt@reddit
I used to hate doing it until I started doing it monthly, it gets so much easier to keep on top of it. Overnight oven soaker solutions about three bottles of the stuff, two for the trays and wire bits, I soak them for about 2 days, a bottle for the inside that stays on overnight. The day I need to clean it I put on some 40 mins tv show and race to get it done before it finishes. Also a scrub daddy is a must!
Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
I pay a service to come do this a few times a year. Literally takes the whole thing apart and cleans all the mechanisms. Sparkly like new!!
Awkward_Presence_792@reddit
Cleaning the oven yuk! I get a mobile oven cleaning person in to do the job, I’ll work an extra shift to cover the cost and to me it’s money well spent.

Moogle-Mail@reddit
That should always be done by the person who causes the buildup. I leave a lot of a household jobs to be done by my husband but I would never leave that one for him because it's just "yucky".
Hopeful-Radio3471@reddit
You can get a cover that stops it going in, then you just have to lift a ball of hair off while you’re showering (then leave them to accumulate on the side of the bath forever 😬)
Booboodelafalaise@reddit
I HATE doing this. Also, picking food debris out of the kitchen sink after washing up. Both are 🤢
Far-Cucumber2929@reddit
Changing the bed sheets, hanging the laundry on the indoor airer (hanging on the washing line I don’t mind) Putting the dry clothes away.
SnooRecipes6532@reddit
Taking the bins out - I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve done it since moving in with my (now) husband, and even then it’s only been when he’s been away for a weekend. Also hate hoovering the stairs
psycoMD@reddit
I hate to hoover, I always have and always will it seems. I’m happy to mop and do anything else. But hoovering just makes me mad and always gives me back pain.
EpicFishFingers@reddit

Washing dishes. Although, I don't mind drying them 🤣 because everywhere is clean and tidy once they are away. Thankfully, my husband doesn't mine it, because he is watching a show or movie while taking his time!
We share everything else equally, but that one really gets on my nerves.
BeingOtherwise7829@reddit
Mopping and hoovering. Basically anything to do with floors. Can't stand it!
caliandris@reddit
I used to hate hanging washing up. Then I got a drying pod. You hang things on coat hangers, hang them in the pod and turn on the fan. It's miles cheaper than a tumble dryer, dries clothes quickly, keeps the room warm too at a fraction of the price of a tumbler.
Also, you don't resent putting things on a coat hanger to dry when you know you'll be able to take it straight out and put in the wardrobe.
I've now got a big heated hanger for bigger things because the pod won't do duvet covers and sheets a d it's great. Don't mind it at all now. Still hate putting duvet covers on though.

HannaaaLucie@reddit
I'm the next step.. putting the laundry away.
I dont mind gathering it, washing it, putting it on airers or in the dryer.. but I can't stand the putting away part.
sugemeumpenem@reddit
Honestly all of them.
I invite people over to force myself to clean because I hate it so much I just physically can’t without some kind of external pressure.
It’s just so utterly draining, relentless and Sisyphean. You spend a full day cleaning the house and it still doesn’t look perfect and within a day of normal living it looks bad again. Spend hours doing laundry or dishes and then two hours later there’s more. It’s one thing spending hours on a tedious task if you can then enjoy the feeling of it being done, but with cleaning and laundry you never get any sense of relief or reward because they’re never really done for more than a few hours at a time, and even then, it could always be cleaner.
I don’t understand how no one else seems to be exhausted trying to stay on top of it all while holding down a full-time job and possibly caring for a family.
The second I can afford it I will get a regular professional cleaning and laundry service - that’s the very first luxury I will gift myself as it will improve my quality of life more than any little treats, tech upgrades or even a bigger flat.

Not as much a chore but i think painting is only done by people with a part of the brain missing when they say they don't mind doing it or worse, enjoy it. I will have a go at any DIY, plumbing, building, putting up shelving tiling ect. Painting is torture to me.
remylelourie@reddit
I enjoy the rollering part of painting a wall and find it quite satisfying. It's every other part of the process that pisses me off. Moving furniture, covering furniture and floors, getting the masking tape on, cutting in and NEVER getting it straight at the top of the wall, moving like a ninja everytime you leave the room so you can shut the door and prevent the cats from inevitably standing in the paint tray. Fucking stressful.
upturned-bonce@reddit

Cleaning the bathroom! Everything else I can do grudgingly, but without complaining too much but cleaning the bathroom… I have a visceral hatred of it.
But, I live alone, so it must be done.
It doesn’t help that the bathroom is over 20’years old and desperately in need of a refresh. So while it’s (nearly) always sparklingly clean, it still looks tired, even after I’ve cleaned it! 😟
LavenderClouds6@reddit

I don’t mind putting clothes on the airer, it’s the washing line I hate. Always checking the clouds incase it looks like rain, can’t go out too far incase it does rain and then it’s been a waste of time and then if you forget about it and it turns dark everything is suddenly damp and cold.
Apart from hoovering the stairs which is a physical struggle for me, most of the other housework is meh. The one thing i like though, emptying the cutlery from the little dishwasher caddy. I don’t like emptying the dishwasher, just specifically putting the knives, forks and spoons into their little drawer compartments.

Sidebottle@reddit
When I was a kid I hated the dishwasher. Now I'm an adult I really don't mind because I'm the one who loads it, I actually put things in logical places so it takes half a second to unload.
No more playing 'try not to get stabbed' picking out forks from the knives and spoons. Group them together, grab in one, job done.

I used to always hate putting laundry away but that's all changed now. I love it.
My son is autistic and hates things being on the bed that aren't meant to be there so he used to come in and push the piles of washing onto the floor. Absolutely agree with this. All other chores I have to do seem to have their place in the world, I can see them as necessary and just get on with them. But hanging washing on an airer is soul crushing. Shake shake drape adjust. Shake drape. Shake shake drape. Pick a sock up, dangle it over, watch it drop off. Wonder if this is what our unique and finite lives were made for. Weep in deep existential woe. Pick sock up.

I think I don't like hoovering but it's been so long I honestly don't know. It was a particularly hot day after a hair cut and I kept having to brush dirt and hair off the bottom of my feet. I was already in a bad mood because my glasses kept slipping off my sweaty nose. Similarly but not the connecting rivets of my Henry had expanded due to the heat and weren't doing their job. In a fit of rage I kicked that smug doe eyed wanker in the face but didn't bend my toes back enough and in the process discovered I had early stage Hallux Limitus (Arthritis of the big toe). The doctor gave me insoles and encouraged me to wear them all the time, even in the house. Though I don't hoover I no longer notice when the floor is dirty and have stopped cutting my hair which has both reduced mess and helped keep my glasses in place.
