What's your favourite lesser known biscuit?

Honestly so good. Someone please correct me if i'm wrong but I believe they're named "little hedgehog" in Polish, and pronounced like "yuh-ZHECK-ee". For those unfamiliar they are like the lovechild of a Twix and a bar of Fruit and Nut. Crunchy biscuit, super chewy caramel, nuts and raisins coated in chocolate. Also available in coconut, coffee etc. versions. God tier.

FWIW it's called a "PR" exam (stands for *per rectum* from latin) or alternatively "DRE" (Digital Rectal Exam, digital meaning finger not the opposite of analog). I much prefer your phrasing though!

My brother-in-law works in Health and Safety in the NHS. He has no qualifications post-GCSE, works 4 days a week and boasts about doing literally nothing at work. He comes in a hour late and scrolls Tiktok until home time. His whole department is similar. £57k a year I'm a doctor. Of course that means I've done many years of education. I work in acute medicine, seeing patients admitted to the hospital with serious illnesses like heart attacks amd breathing problems. I work 40 hours a week including weekends and nights, as well as being part of the cardiac arrest team. £45k a year.

Of course I don't want a "round applause", no idea why you would think I do. I was asking whether, if you think anyone doing above the bare minimum is a mug, you would apply that to you/your family needing medical care?

Do you queue for photos at tourist spots?

Posted by theowleryonehundred@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 83 comments

BlueStarFern@reddit

Exactly this! I have queued before because that's the only way to actually see the place! On a recent trip I wanted to stand on a balcony and look out over the lake, but nooo i'm not allowed to do that because there's a long queue of people waiting to take their photo there. I don't even want a bloody photo I just want to be allowed to see the view for a minute then move on!

Why are more people wearing scrubs outside work?

Posted by TedsterTheSecond@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 341 comments

BlueStarFern@reddit

As a hospital doc who wears scrubs every day, I wear them everywhere, bus to and from work, and round the shops if I need to stop on the way. My scrubs are no more dirty than the suit my consultant wears at work (cleaner actually as he doesn't wash his whole suit after every use). I use PPE if there is any infection control risk at work, and there is good evidence which demonstrates that scrubs in public confer no risk. I'm sorry but I don't care enough about the public perception to put a different set of clothes on my sweaty body after a hard shift and then have to wash those too when I get home. I'm bloody knackered. (Also as others have pointed out, the hospital don't wash our personal scrubs lol)

What second language should we be promoting most in schools?

Posted by idancegood@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 670 comments

BlueStarFern@reddit

The missing context here though is that most French speakers in the UK can speak English. As an NHS worker, BSL is the language I wish I had more than any other. The most common communication issues I have are with monolingual patients whose only fluent language is Polish, Punjabi or BSL. There is always someone on staff who speaks the other 2 and can assist, but not BSL. Deaf patients get worse healthcare because of this. (The translation services we are supposed to have are bloody useless).

+1 here for Quorn. Other brands of "meat substitute" products are very hit and miss, and some are absolutely revolting. I like everything Quorn make, so it's a safe buy. I probably spend about £15 a week on Quorn!

I'll be honest, i've never read a British character written by an american which wasn't *terrible* It will definitely be a big challenge to capture the correct language depending on her age, ethnicity, social status, what part of London she is from, who she is speaking to etc., all of these will change how she speaks. If you are adamant that she be a Londoner, please please have a Londoner proof read the text!

Hence my comment about deterioration, you're really just ignoring the second half of my comment there lol. No system is perfect, sometimes stuff gets missed. If something really is wrong, it will continue or get worse, which is why I said to go to GP/return to ED.

Lol I find this a very strange comment. Not once have I taken someones "ill sound and face" as evidence that they are actually sick. If anything that kind of performance suggests a malingerer. Sick patients seem sick for so many other reasons.

BlueStarFern@reddit

Exactly this. "Tips to get an ultrasound" is fully missing the point. If he was sent home it was because there was no evidence that anything was dangerously wrong at that time. If the pain carries on, see a GP. If he is noticably deteriorating in a concerning way (eg. stops peeing, uncontrolled vomiting, visibly sweaty/pale, uncontrolled fever, vomiting blood etc.) then return to A&E.

This is a really interesting point. I've always considered myself completely unpatriotic... but as a queer woman I certainly enjoy the benefits of being born in Britain and not, say, Saudi Arabia. You've shifted my viewpoint for sure. How then does one balance patriotism with not becoming problematically nationalistic?
