Have you ever helped someone with no money for fuel?

A few weeks ago I was about to fill up super late at night and the car in front was just about to leave the station. His fuel cap door was open as he drove off so I waved at him to stop simply just to close it for him. He rolled down his window naturally and it had turned out he had had problems filling up completely. Kid was just freshly past his test (definitely must have been 17/18, very young inexperienced lad) and had got frazzled trying to fill up, having never done it before he simply needed help. These fuel pumps LOOK like they accept contactless, but don't - which it does say on it. He was simply trying to do it that way. The guy had just frazzled himself in my opinion, ignorantly thought he'd have no problem filling up but there was a bunch of potential problems (there's no other station open closeby and this station frequently runs out and closes completely overnight to reserve stock for the daytime (I think that's it anyway)). Was a learning experience he was going through basically. But he'd ended up in a situation where he'd no way to pay for fuel and not enough mileage to get back to his parents house (we're deep in the countryside, not the place to run outta fuel late at night). I ended up paying £10 worth of fuel into his tank for him (and let him watch how it was done because nobody had actually shown him before), like you, I was doubtful I was seeing this money back and truthfully, on benefits, shortly after Xmas, that £10 WAS needed. He seemed genuine enough in his intent to pay me back, but I was admittedly worried in the moment when giving him my bank details, that I couldn't really be affording to risk helping people like this. Sure enough, the money appeared in my account a few days later. Just someone needing help. Looking back, I hope I wouldn't regret doing it even if he hadn't given it back and I wonder if that's a better way to think about it OP? Basically, what other choice did you have? In my situation, I didn't want to leave an inexperienced kid outta fuel on a country road with no signal because he's not known what else to do other than just try to get home. It sounds like you were the same...you would've regretted not helping much more than helping. It does 100% suck you got an inauthentic experience and I hope you can try and get some peace from others experiences. I genuinely don't think he should be beating yourself up for trying to help someone OP. There's "other versions" of our stories and in all of them I think like me, you'd always regret not even trying to help compared with trying and it not working out right (in other circumstances your help could've prevented a very desperate person who genuinely needed a lifeline from ending their life). Maybe just a life lesson here about "how much" help to give someone, but in all honesty...how are you expected to make an 100% accurate judgement on someone you barely know...I feel like you're putting waaaay too much pressure on yourself. On a sorta related note - right now when the news is reporting on a lot of famous, self-serving and narcissistic people getting away with taking advantage of others it unfortunately emboldens everyone with those same attitudes to double down on them, as they think there's no consequences. Your post has vibes of "are we all just looking out for ourselves now" and aye, it can feel like that, but I hope my post and others help convince you otherwise. Plus, history has taught us time and time again this supremacy ideologies are unsustainable and eventually collapse upon themselves. We're pack animals after all, not parasites! That pack-animal mentality always wins out in the end! I'm glad you helped that guy, even if he didn't deserve it - doesn't matter. Just nice knowing there's people wanting to help out there 😁.
